INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Indiana will get $2.9 million from a nationwide settlement with a software company that misled users who filed their taxes through TurboTax.

Intuit Inc., the California-based company behind the TurboTax tax-filing program, advertised TurboTax as completely free, but this only held true for taxpayers filing basic returns, the Indiana attorney general’s office said.

Those filing a more detailed return were notified that they must upgrade to a paid service after providing additional information. Intuit also did not notify low-income users they qualified for a genuinely free product through the Internal Revenue Service provided through TurboTax, regardless of their filing status, the attorney general's office said Thursday in a news release.

Indiana's share is part of a $141 million settlement across 50 states and the District of Columbia. Before last year, Intuit offered two free versions of TurboTax — the IRS’s Free File Program for those making under $34,000 and members of the military and the “TurboTax Free Edition” for taxpayers with “simple returns. A ProPublica investigation exposed how Intuit executives were aware they deceived customers in advertising the service.

Approximately 4 million people across the United States were impacted, including more than 98,000 Indiana residents. Those who used TurboTax for tax years 2016 through 2018 are eligible for approximately $30 payments for each year that they paid to file.

Several female inmates in Indiana have filed a federal lawsuit alleging they were attacked by male prisoners after a Clark County jail guard sold a key to their jail cells.

The Washington Post reports that at least 28 women are suing Clark County Sheriff Jamey Noel and then-corrections officer David Lowe for allegedly allowing male inmates to attack them on Oct. 24.

According to the lawsuit, the male prisoners allegedly raped, exposed their genitals, yelled obscenities, and groped the women.

The lawsuit alleges that two male inmates paid Lowe $1,000 in exchange for access the women's cells, Newsweek reported.

The Post and WDRB reported that Lowe was fired and charged days after the alleged attacks.

According to the news outlets, Lowe was charged with felony official misconduct, helping an inmate escape, and trafficking with an inmate.

His trial is slated to begin sometime in September, WDRB reported.

GARY, Ind. — Authorities in Indiana are investigating the shooting deaths of four people shot within a 24-hour period in Gary.

During a press conference, Gary Police Chief Brian Evans told news outlets that shootings were not random and the victims were targeted, CBS and ABC News reported.

Evans said the first shooting occurred sometime Sunday when a woman who'd be shot was dropped off by someone she knew at Methodist Hospital, according to the media outlets.

Evans said she later succumbed to her injuries, the news outlets reported.

Around 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Evans said police responded to a shooting at a residence, where they found one woman dead and another person was injured, CBS and ABC reported.

Sometime Monday evening, police said they found two teenage boys dead from gunshot wounds at a residence, the news outlets reported.

According to police, they believe the two victims were killed at the same time, the media outlets reported.

The Lake County Coroner's office later identified the teens killed as 16-year-old Dayvion Jones and 14-year-old Bobby Wright, CBS News and the Chicago Tribune reported.

Police said the shootings are not drug- or gang-related, the news outlets reported.

Evans told the news outlets that no arrests had been made.

She said a case of fraud cost them more than $100,000.“I’m hurt that somebody would do this to us and make us struggle,” Korner said.The restaurant was having trouble making payroll for the 25 employees and was a matter of hours from closing when things took an unusual turn. The community came together to raise about $10,000. It’s not enough to bail the restaurant out, but it has kept its doors open.“It's amazing,” said Kountry Kitchen general manager Amanda Merritt. “We've had phone calls, messages, there was a GoFundMe. They've helped with their donating.”The money came from individuals around town who don’t want the restaurant to close.“We come two to three times a week,” said James Wagner, who drives about 10 miles to get to the restaurant.Wagner said it’s not just the food, but the small-town flavor of the business that keeps him coming back. Before his wife died, he would bring her to the restaurant. He said one day he was cutting up a salad to make the pieces smaller for his wife.“So, Diane came over and said, ‘What are you doing?’” Wagner said he explained the situation. “From then on, she told the girls, anytime my wife ordered a salad, you make sure you got to cut it up real fine. EVANSVILLE, Il. — On the second floor of this courthouse, what at first glance looks like an ATM is actually a legal lifeline. It is a legal aid kiosk, which helps users facing eviction to get the legal help they need.

“It's going to either be in the courthouse or in their local library, and that's where low-income people seek help,” said Scott Wylie, an attorney with Pro Bono Indiana. “It's touch screen; it's intuitive. They can look up all of the resources that are available and provide legal assistance in their eviction action and other related housing stability issues. They can directly connect to a legal navigator who is trained to be able to provide them guidance.”

When evictions began rising in the state last year, pro bono legal services found many tenants in need of legal help.

“We found that over 50% of eviction clients, who were arriving to be removed from their apartment, had never heard of civil legal aid assistance or rental assistance. Over 50%,” Wylie said.

According to data collected by The Eviction Lab, as of early November, the number of evictions in cities across the country is on the rise. When compared to their average numbers from previous years, in Las Vegas, it rose 60%; in Cleveland, it was up 61%; in Milwaukee, it climbed to 68% and in Tampa, it skyrocketed 121%.

“We have a large problem across the United States, and solutions like these help chip away at those inequities that poor people are confronted with,” Wylie said.

Several states are now making use of legal kiosks, including Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana and North Dakota.

In Indiana, $1 million in federal COVID relief funds paid for 120 kiosks to get deployed across the state, which connects users to Indiana Legal Help. One will be placed in each of Indiana’s 92 counties. Advocates say it is something that is needed, especially in rural areas.

“The reality is, in many counties in Indiana and many counties across the United States, they're now 'legal deserts,'” Wylie said.

Abbie Bush heads up civil legal assistance programs at the Indiana Bar Foundation and worked to get the kiosks into the state.

“It was almost a no-brainer that this is what our state needed,” Bush said. “It's accessible to anybody, but we are targeting those people who are lower income and can receive free legal services.”

Those who do pro bono legal work believe those services could help prevent evictions.

“If we can intervene early, find the case before it has reached the point of not being repairable, we can help people cure for a relatively small amount of money,” Wylie said. “That's much different than what it costs society for someone to fall into homelessness.”
