In the wake of recalling dressers after furniture tipped over and killed several children, Ikea has implemented new changes at its U.S. stores as part of its commitment to keep homes safe.

Ikea now requires shoppers to acknowledge before they purchase a chest of drawers or other select clothing storage furniture that they could tip over onto children.

According to a press release, customers must acknowledge that they would attach the furniture to the wall and provide their name and email address.

“The safe use of IKEA products is our top priority, and this new sales requirement reinforces the need for wall attachment to help protect our customers and their homes from tip-over incidents,” said Patricia Lobell, Market Area Manager at IKEA Retail U.S., in the press release. “Consistent with guidance from the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), IKEA believes that the risk of tip-over incidents is reduced when chests of drawers and other select clothing storage units are properly attached to the wall. The new sales requirement is an important next step in our journey to help our customers enjoy a safer life at home.”

The announcement comes as the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) released a new report about tip-over injuries and fatalities.

Ikea has released an audio version of their 2021 catalog in the form of a four-hour podcast.

Last year, the Swedish retailer announced it was discontinuing its iconic catalog after 70 years because its consumers were turning to shop online.

This year, the new audio version catalog is being touted as a "handy and hands-free" audiobook."Not only does this catalog save on paper, but it’s also contactless, convenient, and filled with style inspiration and vivid product descriptions for your listening pleasure," the company said.

According to Ikea, online sales have surged 45% during the pandemic, which convinced the company to shift towards online shopping and shopping with its first mobile app, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.

Recall issued for mugs, plates, bowls sold at IKEA

IKEA has issued a recall for bowls, plates and mugs that could pose a burn hazard. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the Heroisk and Talrika bowls, plates and mugs can become brittle and break, causing hot food or liquids to leak out. "IKEA is aware of 123 reports of breakage worldwide, including four reports of injuries, two of which required medical attention," the recall notice says."Most of the injuries were burns due to hot contents leaking out. This includes one incident, without injury, in the United States." The bowls, plates and mugs were made from polylactic acid or polylactide material from renewable sources. About 148,000 products are affected by the recall and were sold in IKEA stores nationwide and online from August 2019 until earlier this month. The items came in a variety of colors, including yellow, pink and blue and sold for between $4 and $12.Anyone who purchased the items included in the recall should immediately stop using them and return them to the IKEA store for a full refund.
