<p>PAGE, Ariz. — A group spending Memorial Day boating on Lake Powell in Arizona witnessed something few ever see or are able to catch on video.</p>
<p>Mila Carter was heading towards Antelope Point Marina with family and friends Monday when she noticed a few rocks falling along a nearby cliff next to the lake.</p>
<p>"It kind of didn't stop and we could tell that more was coming, so we stopped and I kind of just pulled out my phone just in time," said Carter.</p>
<p>What happened next left them stunned, amazed and every other adjective in the dictionary.</p>
<figure class="Figure" itemscope="" itemtype="https://schema.org/ImageObject">
<div class="Figure-container">
<p>Steve Carter</p>
</div><figcaption class="Figure-caption" itemprop="caption">Boaters capture Lake Powell rock slide on camera</figcaption></figure>
<p>"Pretty incredible," explained Carter. "Saw something like I had never seen before."</p>
<p>Within seconds after Carter pulled out her phone, an entire section of the cliff broke free and crashed into the water. The massive rock slide caused a large splash followed by a wave heading in the direction of the boat.</p>
<p>"I feel like the video didn't do that big tidal wave justice," said Carter. "It was huge."</p>
<p class="cms-textAlign-center"><b><i>Raw video below shows rock slide crash into Lake Powell</i></b></p>

<p>Raw video of Lake Powell rock slide</p>
<p></span></p>
<p>Seeing the wave crash near them, Carter's husband sped up when realizing they needed to quickly get out of the way.</p>
<p>"There was still the aftermath of the big rockfall that we need to make sure and be clear from," Carter said.</p>
<p>When spending a holiday on Lake Powell, boaters usually expect a day full of sun and fun. But never in their wildest dreams did Carter and her family expect to see a rock slide literally rock their world.</p>
<p>"We try to be safe and stay clear of things like that, but it definitely isn't something that I was really concerned about. Not every time I'm by a big cliff or rock do I worry that it's going to fall on me."</p>

<p>The entire experience took just seconds, but was something Carter said she her group will remember for a lifetime. </p>
<p>"It was definitely surprising and shocking and kind of a little bit of a wake up call to watch out for everything!"</p>

OUR WLWT MOBILE AND YOU KNOW, WHAT ALL WEEK. HAS BEEN WATCHING THE RADAR CLOSELY FOR US BECAUSE HE KNOWS A LOT OF YOU HAVE WEAKENED PLANS LOOKS LIKE THINGS COULD BE DECENT ON SUNDAY INTO MONDAY. YEAH, YOU KNOW, WE’VE BEEN SAYING ALL WEEK THAT WE’VE GOT THIS LOOMING THREAT FOR SCATTERED DOWNPOURS HIDDEN MISS DOWNPOURS. THEY’RE STILL THERE, BUT AS WE’RE GETTING CLOSER NOW THE PICTURES A LITTLE BIT MORE CLEAR AND WE’RE ABLE TO IDENTIFY A PERIOD OF TIME THAT APPEARS TO BE A LITTLE BIT DRIER THAN OTHER TIMES FOR EXAMPLE CASE IN POINT STARTING TOMORROW AFTERNOON THROUGH THOROUGHLY ON INDEPENDENCE DAY THERE IS A WINDOW THERE IN WHICH I THINK IT’S MOSTLY DRY. SO YOUR FIREWORKS ARE GOOD TOMORROW NIGHT. YOUR FIREWORKS ARE GOOD SUNDAY NIGHT MONDAY NIGHT THOUGH. THAT’S WHERE WE START TO GET QUESTION MARKS AGAIN AND I’LL BREAK THAT DOWN HERE AND JUST A MOMENT, BUT YOU KNOW WHAT TODAY’S FORECAST PERFECTLY FITS THE DEFINITION OF SCATTERED OR HIT AND MISS WITH THE RAIN BECAUSE IT JUST ALL DEPENDS ON YOUR LOCATION AROUND THE AREA NOW THINGS ARE RELATIVELY QUIET AND AROUND 75 LOOP, NOT MUCH RAIN THIS EVENING THERE HAVE BEEN SOME DOWNPOURS TO THE SOUTH AND EAST OF CINCINNATI. YOU CAN STILL SEE SOME OF THEM POPPING UP HERE THROUGH PARTS OF BROWN AND TO ADAMS COUNTY’S FROM PEEBLES OVER TOWARDS JUST THE EAST OF GEORGETOWN AND I THINK THIS CONTINUES THROUGH THE NIGHT TONIGHT. SO WHILE IT MAY BE QUIET AT THE MOMENT DON’T BE SURPRISED IF ALL OF A SUDDEN YOU HEAR THE PITTER PATTER OF RAIN ON YOUR WINDOW SEAL OUT OF NOWHERE BECAUSE THAT’S JUST THE NATURE OF THE WAY THESE DOWNPOURS ARE FLARING UP IN FACT RIGHT AROUND SUNSET. WE HAD A PRETTY HEALTHY LINE OF STORMS. IF YOU’RE UP IN MIDDLETOWN YOU WERE DRENCHED IF YOU WERE DOWN IN HAMILTON OR FAIRFIELD YOU’RE LIKE WHAT RAIN YOU SAW THE DARK SKIES, BUT YOU NEVER DID GET THE RAIN AND THAT’S KIND OF THE WAY IT PLAYS OUT WITH HIT AND MISS DOWNPOURS. SO BACK TO THE SPECIFICS HERE. WE HAVE A DECENT CHANCE FOR HIT AND MISS DOWNPOURS THROUGH THE FIRST HALF OF YOUR SATURDAY BY SATURDAY AFTERNOON AND THEN GOING THROUGH SUNDAY AND INTO EARLY ON THE FOURTH. I THINK IT’S RELATIVELY DRY FOR MOST OF US THAT SAID, HERE IN SOUTH OF THE RIVER THERE WILL STILL BE THE CHANCE FOR A COUPLE OF DOWNPOURS. SO HERE’S KIND OF YOUR HOLIDAY WEEKEND FORECAST MORNING RAIN ON SATURDAY AND THEN HOT SUNSHINE BY AFTERNOON AND BECAUSE THIS FRONT MAY PUSH JUST FAR ENOUGH SOUTH OF US, WE MAY EVEN GET IN ON SUNDAY IF WE’RE LUCKY A LITTLE DIP IN THE HUMIDITY. IT MAY NOT BE REFRESHING LIKE IT WAS EARLIER IN THE WEEK, BUT NOT AS BAD AS IT IS CURRENTLY. WARM SUNSHINE ON SUNDAY AND THEN ON THE FOURTH OF JULY WE’LL NEED TO KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR THUNDERSTORM COMPLEXES LATE MONDAY AFTERNOON AND EVENING. I THINK MONDAY COULD BRING US SOME NASTIER WEATHER ESPECIALLY LATE. SO WE’VE BEEN TALKING ABOUT THIS FRONT STALLING OUT OVER THE REGION AND IT JUST DEPENDS ON EXACTLY THE PROXIMITY TO US AND IT APPEARS AT LEAST SATURDAY AFTERNOON THROUGH EARLY ON THE 4TH. THIS FRONT PUSHES FAR ENOUGH SOUTH INTO KENTUCKY THAT IT GIVES US AT LEAST A LITTLE WINDOW OR LARGER WINDOW. A DRYER WEATHER CONDITIONS NOW IT IS SOUPY OUTSIDE TONIGHT DEW POINTS IN THE UPPER 60S TO RIGHT AROUND 70 DEGREES SO STEAMY TONIGHT STILL HUMID ON YOUR SATURDAY, BUT SATURDAY NIGHT INTO SUNDAY AGAIN, WE MAY GET A LITTLE NUDGE OF DRIER AIR IN HERE TO MAKE IT FEEL A LITTLE MORE COMFORTABLE BEFORE IT TURNS HOT AND STEAMY AGAIN ON INDEPENDENCE DAY. HERE’S FUTURECAST NOTICE AS WE GO THROUGH THE NIGHT. YOU SEE HOW THOSE DOWNPOURS KIND OF BLOW UP OUT OF NOWHERE AND THEN THEY AWAY, THAT KEEPS HAPPENING THROUGH LUNCHTIME ON SATURDAY AFTER LUNCHTIME NOTICE HOW I GET PRETTY QUIET ACROSS THE AREA BUT IN OUR SOUTH KEEP A LOOK OUT, THERE STILL CAN BE A FEW PASSING DOWNPOURS AND AS FAR NORTH AS THE OHIO RIVER, EVEN THERE’S THE CHANCE FOR A LITTLE BIT OF SPRINKLE OR SPOTTY RAIN ACTION, BUT I THINK OVERALL IT’S PRETTY DRY SATURDAY EVENING AFTERNOON THROUGH AT LEAST EARLY ON MONDAY. IT’S NOT TO SAY IT WILL BE DRY FOR EVERYONE. SO 79 OUTSIDE AT THE MOMENT TEMPERATURES GENERALLY IN THE UPPER 70S TO RIDE AROUND 80. IT’S GOING TO BE A WARM NIGHT WITH THE HIGH LEVELS OF HUMIDITY ONLY DOWN TO 71 BY MORNING AGAIN. DON’T BE SURPRISED. YOU HEAR SOME RAIN OR YOU HEAR A RUMBLE OF THUNDER OVERNIGHT BEST CHANCE FOR RAIN ON YOUR SATURDAY IS THE FIRST HALF OF THE DAY AND THEN IT’S DRY AND HOT FOR THE AFTERNOON. YOU’RE SEVEN DAY FORECAST. MIKE AND SHRI SHAKING OUT LIKE THIS AGAIN THUNDERSTORM CHANCES INCREASE AGAIN LATE ON THE FOURTH OF JULY AND THEN WE’RE KIND OF IN THAT HIT AND MISS STORM PATTERN. FOR MOST OF NEXT WEEK RIGH

THERE VIA APPLE PAY. WILD ISN’T THAT WILD WE WERE TALKING ABOUT THIS EARLIER. YEAH, AND I MEAN, OF COURSE I WOULD GIVE UP MY SEAT. OH, I WOULD LOSE. PICK ME. YEAH. YOU KNOW WHAT YOU GOTTA NEGOTIATE WITH THEM. YES, BECAUSE LEGALLY IN THEIR CONTRACT IT SAYS IF THEY OVERBOOK ONE OF THEIR FLIGHTS THEY HAVE TO PAY YOU AT LEAST FOUR TIMES A ONE-WAY FARE. YEAH, BUT SO MANY PEOPLE WERE SAYING NO, I’M NOT GOING TO TAKE THAT FOUR TIMES IN MAL, WHICH IS SO INTERESTING. THEY JUST HAVE TO KEEP RAISING THE BAR. YEAH. I KNOW WHICH WHICH MAKES YOU REALIZE I THINK PEOPLE REALLY VALUE THEIR VACATION. YEAH FREE TIME. YEAH, THAT’S A GREAT POINT. YES, AND YOU KNOW WHAT? LET’S SAY YOU’RE VACATIONING HERE IN CINCINNATI. WELL, WELCOME WELCOME. YOU YEAH, A LITTLE HUMID. WE’VE GOT NICER WEATHER MOVING IN THOUGH FOR THE SECOND HALF OF THE DAY AT LEAST IN THE WAY HUMIDITY. YEAH, WHICH IS GOOD. WE MAY SEE A COUPLE OF STRAY POP UP SHOWERS AND STORMS BUT A GOOD CHUNK OF THIS DAY WILL BE DRY, WHICH IS GREAT NEWS IF FOURTH OF JULY PLANS TODAY. I KNOW WE ALL LIKE THE WEATHER TO COOPERATE AND I THINK THAT’LL BE THE CASE FOR MOST SOUTH DEARBORN YOU WERE SEEING THOSE STORMS THIS MORNING. THAT IS NOT THE CASE RIGHT NOW ARE STILL UNDER THE SUNSHINE SOME CLOUDS OUT THAT WAY AND IT LOOKS LIKE A PAVEMENTS DRIED OUT TOO. SO THINGS LOOKING A LITTLE BIT BETTER AT YOUR WAY. AT OUR LIVE RADAR SHOWING DRY SKIES FOR EVERYBODY. WE STILL HAVE SOME CLOUDS A LITTLE FURTHER SOUTH OF THE OHIO RIVER SO STATIONARY FRONT SETTLED OUT THAT WAY WHICH I’LL SHOW YOU HERE IN A SECOND THAT WILL KEEP THE CLOUDS AN OPPORTUNITIES FOR A FEW SHOWERS AROUND HERE AS WE HEAD THROUGH THE NEXT FEW HOURS. MOST OF WHAT’S BEEN COMING ALONG THIS FRONT TO THE WEST THAT’S FALLEN APART CAN’T ROLL OUT A COUPLE OF SPRINKLES, BUT AS WE HEAD TOWARDS THE AFTERNOON THE HEAT OF THE DAY THIS FRONT HERE IS ESSENTIALLY GOING TO WORK AS A RAILROAD TRACK FOR THE SHOWERS. THEY’RE JUST GONNA FOLLOW THAT FRONT. SO I WOULD SAY THE BEST CHANCE OF SEEING SOME SPOTTY SHOWERS A FEW STORMS. TODAY WOULD BE A LONG AND SOUTH OF THAT FRONT AND WHAT’S WE’RE GOING TO SEE HERE ALONG IN SOUTH OF THE FRONT TOO IS MORE HUMID AIR. IT’S PRETTY STICKY IN CINCINNATI AND POINTS SOUTH OF THAT BUT NOTICE SOME DRIER AIR FILTERING IN FROM THE NORTH HERE. SO LESS HUMAN CONDITIONS. I DON’T THINK EVERYBODY SEES THIS TODAY, BUT IF YOU LIVE NORTH OF CINCINNATI NORTHWEST YOU WILL NOTICE A DROP IN THE HUMIDITY HERE IS WE HEAD THROUGH TODAY, WHICH IS GOING TO BE FANTASTIC IF YOU’RE OUTSIDE AT ALL THIS EVENING I THINK IN COMFORTABLE DAY WE DO GET PRETTY WARM THIS AFTERNOON TEMPERATURES RIGHT AROUND 87 DEGREES SO A BIT HOT IN SOME AREAS AND CERTAINLY FEELING HOW WE’RE SEEING MORE HUMIDITY AND THEN FOR TONIGHT ABOUT 70 NOT QUITE AS STICKY AS THE LAST COUPLE OF NIGHTS AND OVERALL, MOSTLY CLOUDY AND DRY. SKIES WILL BE AN ABUNDANCE HERE. SO AS WE PROGRESS THROUGH YOUR SATURDAY NOTICE A COUPLE OF OPPORTUNITIES FOR HIT AND MISS SHOWER TOO. I WOULD SAY MORE SPRINKLES AT THIS POINT, BUT IT’S AFTER THREE O’CLOCK THAT WE’RE REALLY LOOKING AT MORE OPPORTUNITIES FOR A COUPLE OF HIT AND MISS SHOWERS, MAYBE. FULL OF THUNDER BUT NOTICE HOW THEY JUST SET UP RIGHT ALONG IN SOUTH OF THAT FRONT. THEY’RE GOING TO BE FEW AND FAR BETWEEN SO A LOT OF US ARE GOING TO BE NICE AND DRY ACTUALLY THINK WE SEE SOME SUNSHINE THIS AFTERNOON, SO THAT’LL HELP US HEAT UP. AND THEN HERE WE ARE AT ABOUT 9 9 30 MOST FIREWORKS DISPLAYS GET STARTED NICE AND QUIET. SO THAT’S SOME GOOD NEWS THERE. I THINK A LITTLE BIT OF CLOUD COVER. WE’RE GONNA BE LOOKING AT THOSE CLOUDS TO STAY WITH US FOR GOOD CHUNK OF TONIGHT. I THINK SEEING SOME SUNSHINE FOR THE FIRST HALF OF TOMORROW TEMPERATURES RIGHT AROUND 89 SO SLIGHTLY WARMER THAN TODAY AND NOT QUITE AS HUMID. I THINK THE HUMIDITY REALLY HOLDING OFF UNTIL THE EARLY WEEK SO IT GETS A LITTLE BIT STICKIER FOR THE FOURTH OF JULY. I THINK WE WILL SEE SOME SCATTERED STORMS. THAT DAY TEMPS WILL WILL BE IN THE 90S WEATHER IMPACTING. TUESDAY WITH SOME VERY LIKELY STORMS AND THEN JUST A FEW OPPORTUNITIES THROUGH THE MIDWEEK AND IT LOOKS LIKE WE PICK UP THOSE CHANCES AGAIN FOR THURSDAY AND FRIDAY HEATS THE STORY THIS WEEK UNSETTLED WEATHERS THE STORY THIS WEEK, BUT YOU KNOW WHAT MEGAN IT’S NOT GONNA BE A WASHOUT WEEK. THAT’S WHAT I’M

WLWT DOT COM. GOT TO LOVE TO SEE THE KIDS OUT THERE HELPING OTHER KIDS IN NEED AND USING THE LEMONADE STAND TO GOOD USE THAT STUFF. ALL RIGHT. WE’RE LOOKING AT OUR FORECAST NOW. PARADES, COOKOUTS, GRILLS, FIREWORKS, ALL THAT STUFF’S HAPPENING RIGHT NOW THROUGH THE EVENING. AND HOPEFULLY EVERYBODY AVOIDS THAT STRAY SHOWER CHANCE. I KNOW THE ONE COMMUNITY THAT GETS RAIN OFF TONIGHT, THEY’LL BE SO UPSET. I KNOW IT’S NOW MY FAULT, RIGHT? REMEMBER, RIGHT. THE MESSENGER. I THINK IT’LL IT’LL COOL YOU DOWN A LITTLE BIT. SO WE’LL LOOK ON THE BRIGHT SIDE BECAUSE THERE WILL BE SOME SHOWERS HERE, I THINK, ESPECIALLY BETWEEN NOW AND ABOUT 6:00 TONIGHT. RIGHT NOW, WE’RE QUIET OVER DOWNTOWN CINCINNATI AS WE LOOK OUT OVER THE OHIO RIVER HERE, THE BIG MAC BRIDGE, SEVERAL FOLKS OUT AND ABOUT DRIVING AS WE GO THROUGH THIS TUESDAY. BUT WEATHER AGAIN RIGHT NOW, NOT ANY ONE’S PLANS. RADAR HERE STARTING TO SHOW A COUPLE OF POP OF SHOWERS. IT’S ACTUALLY JUST BUBBLED UP HERE IN THE LAST 10 MINUTES OR SO. IT’S JUST HOW FAST THESE CAN GO UP, JUST IN A MATTER OF MINUTES. JUST BECAUSE IT’S SO HOT, SO HUMID. SO WE’VE GOT A COUPLE OF DOWNPOURS HERE AROUND GALLATIN COUNTY. AND THEN QUINTON SEEING SOME SHOWERS IN SOUTHERN OCEAN COUNTY, NORTH HERE THROUGH CINCINNATI AND PLACES NORTH. THAT OR NOT FINDING A WHOLE LOT OF WET WEATHER RIGHT NOW. AGAIN, PROBABLY GOING TO SEE SOME ADDITIONAL SHOWERS HERE AS WE HEAD THROUGH THE NEXT 6 HOURS OR SO, MAYBE EVEN A LITTLE BIT CLOSER TO SUNSET. BUT THEY WILL BE FEW AND FAR BETWEEN. RIGHT NOW, TEMPERATURES ARE SITTING IN THE LOW EIGHTIES FOR MOST AREAS. WE’RE AT 83 IN CINCINNATI. WHEN YOU FACTOR IN THE HUMIDITY, IT FEELS LIKE 86, ALMOST 94. THE FEELS LIKE TEMPERATURE OUT IN DEL HIGH DEALS. ROE V AND THEN DOWN OR YOU’RE SITTING RIGHT AROUND 84 FOR THE FEELS LIKE TEMPERATURE SO CONTINUING TO GET HOT HERE WE HAVE LOW EIGHTIES THROUGH THIS MIDDAY HOUR AND THEN THROUGH ABOUT THREE 6:00 TONIGHT POP UP OPPORTUNITIES CONTINUE. I THINK WE’RE GOING TO BE AT OUR HOTTEST POINT OF THE DAY WITH SOME UPPER EIGHTIES. FEELS LIKE TEMPERATURES IN THE LOW NINETIES AND THEN FOR FIREWORKS TIME RIGHT AROUND NINE 10:00 FOR A LOT OF COMMUNITY YOU SHOULD BE AT AROUND 80 MAINLY DRY MAINLY BEING THE KEY WORD HERE AGAIN STRAY POSSIBLE BUT WE’RE NOT LOOKING AT COMPLETE WASHOUT OF AN EVENING MOST OF US ARE REALLY NOT AT TOO MANY BIG PROBLEMS. YOU KNOW THE THING ABOUT THESE POP UP SHOWERS THEY ONLY LAST ABOUT 20 MINUTES AND THEY’RE GONE. THEY DON’T HAVE A WHOLE LOT TO SUSTAIN THEMSELVES. SO REAL QUICK, BRIEF WINDOW FOR THAT TONIGHT, 68 DEGREES, PARTLY CLOUDY SKIES, CONTINUED HUMIDITY, FUTURE CASTLES. SO SOME OF THE POP UP SHOWERS HERE BETWEEN NOW AND THREE. AND THEN NOTICE SOME ADDITIONAL POP UPS AS YOU HEAD TOWARD 6:00 TONIGHT. REALLY HIT AND MISS FEW AND FAR BETWEEN AS WE HEAD TOWARDS NINE 10:00. THIS MODEL CLEARS THIS OUT AGAIN, DON’T WANT TO PROMISE YOU A COMPLETELY DRY EVENING. I THINK OPPORTUNITIES FOR AT LEAST A STRAY SHOWER AT THIS POINT. BUT A LOT OF US HERE SHOULD BE UNDER PARTLY CLOUDY SKIES. YOU HAD PAST MIDNIGHT TONIGHT AND INTO YOUR WEDNESDAY. THE SUN IS GOING TO COME OUT AND IT IS GOING TO GET REALLY HOT, INCREASED HUMIDITY AS WE HEAD THROUGH THESE NEXT SEVERAL DAYS. REALLY FEELING LIKE JULY, I THINK ABOUT 90 FOR THE ACTUAL AIR TEMPERATURE. BUT IT’S TO FEEL MORE LIKE 94 WHEN YOU FACTOR IN THAT HUMIDITY FULL ON SUMMER MODE AROUND HERE AS WE HEAD INTO THIS WEEK, THURSDAY, IT’S GOING TO BE OUR NEXT CHANCE FOR STORMS. I DO THINK WE COULD HAVE POTENTIAL TO SEE AT LEAST A COUPLE OF STRONGER STORMS AS WE HEAD THROUGH THE DAY AND THEN THAT EARLY TIME. AND LOOKING LIKE SOMETIME BETWEEN ABOUT THREE AND 8:00 IN THE EVENING. SO LATE DAY STORMS AS WE HEAD INTO FRIDAY, SPOTTY SHOWERS POSSIBLE IN THE EVENING, ABOUT 85 DEGREES. AND THEN WE’LL HAVE ADDITIONAL STORMS AS YOU HEAD INTO. SO THE NEXT WEATHER IMPACT DAY, EVENING RAIN AND STORMS HAVE ABOUT 87 SCATTERED RAIN FOR SUNDAY, 84 AND THEN MONDAY, MOSTLY DRY. BUT THAT HEAT AND HUMIDITY DESK

The high prices, the canceled flights, the booked-up lodging and rental cars. The summer of travel chaos still seems hot and fresh somehow. But it's time to look forward, for there's another crunch time looming less than two months away: the 2022 winter holiday travel season. So put away your T-shirts, break out your sweaters and get ready for the winter holidays. Here's what to know:When should I buy tickets for winter holiday flights?Decision-making on when to buy airline tickets seems more complicated that ever. Prices change daily, even hourly. The staffing and capacity ramifications of the pandemic are still being felt. But October is probably the best window of opportunity. In other words, NOW."Typically ... travelers tend to start planning their holiday travel too late, and they miss out on some of the best prices available," said Hayley Berg, lead economist at Hopper, the planning and booking travel app. And she told CNN Travel she is seeing people waiting later than ever to seal the deal during the pandemic rebound."For the holidays in particular, that's a real problem because now is actually the best time to be booking your Thanksgiving and Christmas travel," Berg said.Hopper suggested in an email to wait no later than mid-October.It's not just a pricing issue, Berg said. She also noted another risk by waiting: "Flights may be sold out completely on the dates you want to fly."The worst time to book? 'The last minute'Scott Keyes, the founder of flight deals and travel advice site Scott's Cheap Flights, told CNN Travel the very best deals were actually this past summer (remember that for 2023). But don't be discouraged this year, he said."The second best time to be booking your flights is now -- because the worst time to book them is to wait until the last minute," Keyes said. "If you haven't booked those flights already and you're really hoping to travel over the winter holidays, try to get it booked in the next week or two."Keyes thinks air fares are likely to get more expensive, not less, as we get closer to Thanksgiving and Christmas.Phil Dengler, a co-owner of the travel resource The Vacationer, uses a popular fall holiday as his guide."I view Halloween as the cutoff date for getting a reasonable price on a Thanksgiving flight, but aim to get booked before then," Dengler said in an email interview. "After Halloween, prices will increase considerably as Thanksgiving gets closer. For Christmas flights, you should really book before Thanksgiving, but the best deals are between now and Halloween."The auto and travel club AAA had different pricing data for Thanksgiving air fares.Based on booking data from 2019, 2021 and 2022 so far, AAA found the lowest average fares just seven to 14 days before Thanksgiving, with the highest prices 28 to 60 days before the holiday. However, the data also showed prices rising in the last seven days before the holiday. So should you wait? A lot depends on personal circumstances such as your budget and how flexible you are with your flying plans, AAA told CNN Travel. If you don't have a lot of wiggle room, it might not be worth the risk to wait for a chance at a lower fare."Airlines have fewer flights than they did in 2019, which means fewer options for consumers," said AAA's Paula Twidale, senior vice president of travel. "With staff shortages and capacity being at its peak, you run the risk of being delayed or even missing flights, particularly if weather plays into the equation."What are the best days to fly for Thanksgiving?Expedia shared some insights on when to travel for Thanksgiving (Thursday, Nov. 24):To save money, the travel company suggested waiting until Monday (Nov. 21) to depart instead of Saturday (Nov. 19) and Sunday (Nov. 20), "as the weekend is the most expensive time to start your Thanksgiving week trip."Average ticket prices for Monday are more than 30% lower than Saturday and nearly 15% cheaper than Wednesday (Nov. 23), it said.As for returns, Expedia said Friday (Nov. 25) is the cheapest date. Coming back Monday (Nov. 28) instead of Sunday (Nov. 27) could save from 5% to 10%.Hopper also suggests flying Thanksgiving Day if you can, offering savings of around $100 off peak prices. Plus planes should be less crowded.Keyes said the Thanksgiving weekend comes with a bonus. "Thanksgiving is the hidden best week for international travel," Keyes said. Why is that?Christmas and New Year's are celebrated worldwide and thus come with global demand, but Thanksgiving is just a U.S. holiday, he said. Domestic flights are pricey, but not international ones."You find some incredible deals all throughout Europe over Thanksgiving week." He said that on one price check this week, he found cheaper fare from New York City to Lisbon, Portugal ($429 round-trip, than to Cedar Rapids, Iowa ($567 round-trip).What are the best days to fly for Christmas?Hopper had advice on when to travel for Christmas (Sunday, Dec. 25):For departure, it said travelers can save $120 off peak prices by departing the Monday (Dec. 19) or Tuesday (Dec. 20) before Christmas. Leaving on Christmas Eve could save people about $100 this year, Hopper estimated. The site said avoid flying out Thursday (Dec. 22) or Friday (Dec. 23), as those will be the most expensive travel days. For returns, the Tuesday (Dec. 27) or Wednesday (Dec. 28) after Christmas Day could save you $40 per ticket. It said avoid coming back on Monday (Dec. 26), New Year's Day or Jan. 2, the most expensive return dates. Some other tips from the expertsHave your ducks in a row: "Preparation is the best way to reduce stress when flying over Thanksgiving and Christmas," Dengler said. "If possible, book a nonstop flight early in the morning" on a lower-volume travel day. He also advised not checking a bag if possible.Treat yourself: If you fly several times a year or more and value a low stress level, Keyes suggested getting a credit card that includes "compelling perks." That includes access to special airport lounges that get you away from the crowds and offer free food, drinks and even massages.Avoid the rush: If you're driving, Twidale said leave early in the morning before rush hour or after 8 p.m. If you need a rental car, reserve it early to lock into the rate and pay in advance to save money. If you're flying but driving to the airport, book parking spaces. She also suggested enrolling in TSA Pre-check to bypass long security lines.Hotels: Berg said if you're headed to a big city (think New York, Chicago, etc.), you are likely to get a better deal if you wait until just a few days before your arrival date to book the room. The caveats: This is for people who aren't dead set on a certain hotel or specific neighborhood. And for smaller cities, she said people should still book earlier as choices are limited.

<p>"You find some incredible deals all throughout Europe over Thanksgiving week." He said that on one price check this week, he found cheaper fare from New York City to Lisbon, Portugal ($429 round-trip, than to Cedar Rapids, Iowa ($567 round-trip).</p>
<h2 class="body-h2">What are the best days to fly for Christmas?</h2>
<p>Hopper had advice on when to travel for Christmas (Sunday, Dec. 25):</p>
<p>For departure, it said travelers can save $120 off peak prices by departing the Monday (Dec. 19) or Tuesday (Dec. 20) before Christmas. Leaving on Christmas Eve could save people about $100 this year, Hopper estimated. The site said avoid flying out Thursday (Dec. 22) or Friday (Dec. 23), as those will be the most expensive travel days.</p>
<p>For returns, the Tuesday (Dec. 27) or Wednesday (Dec. 28) after Christmas Day could save you $40 per ticket. It said avoid coming back on Monday (Dec. 26), New Year's Day or Jan. 2, the most expensive return dates.</p>
<h2 class="body-h2">Some other tips from the experts</h2>
<p><strong>Have your ducks in a row: </strong>"Preparation is the best way to reduce stress when flying over Thanksgiving and Christmas," Dengler said. "If possible, book a nonstop flight early in the morning" on a lower-volume travel day. He also advised not checking a bag if possible.</p>
<p><strong>Treat yourself:</strong> If you fly several times a year or more and value a low stress level, Keyes suggested getting a credit card that includes "compelling perks." That includes access to special airport lounges that get you away from the crowds and offer free food, drinks and even massages.</p>
<p><strong>Avoid the rush:</strong> If you're driving, Twidale said leave early in the morning before rush hour or after 8 p.m. If you need a rental car, reserve it early to lock into the rate and pay in advance to save money. If you're flying but driving to the airport, book parking spaces. She also suggested enrolling in TSA Pre-check to bypass long security lines.</p>
<p><strong>Hotels:</strong> Berg said if you're headed to a big city (think New York, Chicago, etc.), you are likely to get a better deal if you wait until just a few days before your arrival date to book the room. The caveats: This is for people who aren't dead set on a certain hotel or specific neighborhood. And for smaller cities, she said people should still book earlier as choices are limited.</p>

<p>Humans aren't the only ones coming down sick ahead of the holiday season.  </p>
<p>"Just like people get the flu, birds get the flu. Some strains are a lot worse than others. In this case, it's really bad. It kills the birds," said David Anderson, an economist at <a class="Link" href="https://agrilifeextension.tamu.edu" target="_blank" rel="noopener">AgriLife. </a></p>
<p>Across the country, <a class="Link" href="https://www.newsy.com/stories/zoos-hiding-birds-as-avian-flu-spreads-in-north-america/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">avian flu outbreaks</a> are taking a toll on the turkey and chicken industry, leaving <a class="Link" href="https://www.newsy.com/categories/environment/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">farmers</a> scrambling as they try to protect their birds. </p>
<p>"We started off the year as normal at our normal time with 600 birds. They had not even left the rooting barn yet; the bird flu came into the area," said Cathy Cabalo, the owner of <a class="Link" href="https://www.cabalosorchard.com/vegetables" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Cabalo's Orchard and Gardens</a>. "When we're looking at 600 turkeys, that are bread and butter to the season, we didn't dare let them outside."</p>
<p>As of November 1, 43 states had at least one confirmed infected flock according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture — with Iowa being one of the hardest hit states in recent weeks. Officials estimate that nearly 48 million birds in the U.S. have been affected so far. </p>
<p>Out of the 585 flocks confirmed to have cases of Avian flu, 333 are backyard flocks – with the CDC advising folks raising their own birds to do so with caution. That means wearing protective equipment like goggles and masks especially when handling sick or dead birds. </p>
<p><b>SEE MORE: <a class="Link" href="https://www.newsy.com/stories/bird-flu-spreading-across-the-u-s/">Bird Flu Spreading Across The Country, Detected In At Least 29 States</a></b></p>
<p>The avian flu is not just an American problem, in the U.K, poultry farmers have been ordered to keep birds indoors as the country has recorded its largest spread on record more than 200 cases. In Japan, 40,000 chickens were ordered slaughtered following positive tests. </p>
<p>As case numbers rise, businesses are struggling to keep up with holiday demand. </p>
<p>"Between Avian influenza and high feed costs, right there you have the recipe for higher prices. We see right now at the store, whether wholesale or retail prices," said Anderson. </p>
<p>Greg Schmidt is the manager of Tower Chicken Farm. </p>
<p>"My supplier lost over 100,000 birds just in the month of August," said Schmidt. </p>
<p>Add in inflation and shoppers are feeling the pinch in their wallet. According to Auburn University, turkey prices are 25% higher than they were this time last year — with turkey production estimated to decline 6.4% in 2022. The price of a 15 pound turkey is now nearly $21 compared to $15 last year. </p>
<p>"Right now we're seeing a little bit of a shortage in the bigger sizes," said Scott Podd, co-owner of Ray's Butcher Shop. </p>
<p>And if you are looking for a big bird for your Thanksgiving table, industry experts warn that the sooner you purchase or order your holiday bird, the better off you'll be adding that last minute shoppers might find themselves out of "cluck." </p>

<p>KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Birdie Hansen stumbled nose-first into her small business during a time when most businesses were standing still.</p>
<p>"It was just a little hobby that I was doing around when everyone was doing their sourdough starters," she said</p>
<p>Her pandemic project turned into <a class="Link" href="https://effingcandleco.com/">Effing Candle Co.</a> in Kansas City, where she and her husband make cozy candles with a big sense of humor.</p>
<p>It’s a business that’s been growing, despite the odds, but as many small businesses can relate, success hasn’t come easily.</p>
<p>"The cost of our materials have definitely gone up this year, our wax our fragrances. Shipping is more expensive. Labels have gone up. Like everything that we touch has gone up in price," she said. </p>
<p>What consumers are feeling in terms of inflation, small businesses feel too. Inflation right now is at 7.7% and, according to Deloitte, that’s reflected in the holiday spending outlook.</p>
<p>Holiday spending is expected to stay stagnant at $1,455 per household, but consumers plan to buy less gifts—nine compared to 16—and will pull back on non-gift spending by 12%.</p>
<p>While low-income earners plan on spending 25% more than last year, high-income earners will most likely spend 7% less.</p>
<p>"Every day was a teachable moment for the last two and a half years," said Larry Wigger, an associate professor of supply chain management at the University of Missouri Kansas City.</p>
<p>Wigger had a lot to talk about in his classroom lately. He says inflation has been made worse by the lack of labor and supply chain disruptions of both the pandemic and the war in Ukraine.</p>
<p>"Just when we thought we were gonna recover it, set everybody back again," he said.</p>
<p>Wigger says that it will most likely take big shifts in society until we get back to how things were before the pandemic, including growing interest in blue-collar jobs and figuring out long-term supply solutions. In the meantime, there are opportunities for businesses to get creative to weather the current climate.</p>
<p>"Rethinking how you source your stuff, being creative about your hiring, and really thinking through your job descriptions," he said. </p>
<p>Getting creative is exactly what Birdie has been doing at her candle company. </p>
<p>What has worked in her favor is making sure her products come in a variety of price points, offering big discounts on imperfect products, and online gifts with purchases and free shipping minimums to entice buyers. She also hopes consumers keep small businesses like hers in mind when deciding where to spend this holiday season as every dollar continues to mean so much.</p>
<p>"We are just the ones out here making a product that we love, for consumers that we love," she said. </p>

<p>
President Joe Biden on Monday expressed alarm about growing antisemitism in the United States and around the globe and vowed to fight back against the scourge.Speaking to guests gathered for a Hanukkah reception at the White House, Biden said “silence is complicity,” and added that it’s imperative that hate, violence and antisemitism are condemned by the nation.“This year’s Hanukkah arrives in the midst of rising and emboldened antisemitism at home — and quite frankly, around the world,” Biden said. “I recognize your fear, your hurt, your worry that this vile and venom is becoming too normal.”The president added: “I will not be silent. America will not be silent.”The holiday celebration comes during a spate of antisemitic episodes. Former President Donald Trump hosted a Holocaust-denying white supremacist at his Mar-a-Lago club in Palm Beach, Florida. The rapper Ye expressed love for Adolf Hitler in an interview. Basketball star Kyrie Irving appeared to promote an antisemitic film on social media. Neo-Nazi trolls are clamoring to return to Twitter as new CEO Elon Musk grants “amnesty” to suspended accounts.“Today, we must all say clearly and forcefully: Antisemitism and all forms of hate and violence in this country have no safe harbor in America,” Biden said. The Anti-Defamation League, a Jewish civil rights group, tracked 2,717 antisemitic instances of assault, harassment and vandalism last year, a 34% increase over the previous year and the highest number since the New York City-based group began tracking them in 1979.Doug Emhoff, the husband of Vice President Kamala Harris, recently hosted a White House discussion on antisemitism and combating hate with Jewish leaders representing the Reform, Conservative and Orthodox denominations of the faith. At the event, Emhoff, who is Jewish, said he was “in pain right now” over rising antisemitism.Among those invited to Monday’s White House event were Holocaust survivor Bronia Brandman; Michele Taylor, who is U.S. ambassador to the U.N. Human Rights Council and the daughter of Holocaust survivors; and Avigael Heschel-Aronson, the granddaughter of Jewish theologian Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel. Also present was a rabbi, Charlie Cytron-Walker, who managed to usher his congregants to safety during a synagogue hostage crisis earlier this year. He credited security training that his suburban Fort Worth, Texas, congregation had received over the years for getting him and the other three hostages through the traumatic, 11-hour ordeal. At the White House celebration, he noted that antisemitism was a growing problem in America but expressed thanks that many Americans — including Biden — are speaking out.“Antisemitism may be on the rise, but thank God that people are standing by our side,” said Cytron-Walker, who is now a rabbi at Temple Emanuel in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.A menorah has been added to the White House holiday collection this year, lit nightly during the eight-day Jewish festival of Hanukkah. White House carpenters built the menorah out of sterling silver candle cups and wood that was saved from a Truman-era renovation. While the White House has borrowed menorahs of special significance in the past, Biden said the addition was needed.“This year we thought it was important to celebrate Hanukkah with another message of significance, permanence,” Biden said. “The very promise of America is that we all are created equal and deserve to be treated equally throughout our entire lives.”

<p>“This year we thought it was important to celebrate Hanukkah with another message of significance, permanence,” Biden said. “The very promise of America is that we all are created equal and deserve to be treated equally throughout our entire lives.”</p>

SHEREE: I THINK KINGS ISLAND IS TRYING TO BE PROACTIVE. THAT IS JUST THE WEATHER WE WILL BE FACING AT THE END OF THIS WEEK. KEVIN: I THINK IT IS APPROPRIATE TO CANCEL WINTERFEST IN THIS CASE. WE ARE TALKING WHEN CHILLS THAT ARE 20 AND 30° BELOW ZERO. IT HAS BEEN A LONG TIME SINCE IT HAS BEEN THAT COLD. WHEN CHILLS WILL STAY BELOW ZERO THROUGH CHRISTMAS AFTERNOON. LIFE-THREATENING COLD WILL BE OF ALONG DURATION. LET’S BREAK DOWN THE STORM. WE HAVE THE POTENTIAL FOR POWER OUTAGES TOO, WITH GUSTS THAT CAN GET UP TO 50 AT TIMES. WHEN YOU HAVE TEMPERATURES A FEW DEGREES ABOVE ZERO, IT IS EASY TO GET WIND CHILLS THAT ARE GREATER THAN 20° BELOW ZERO WHEN YOU ARE TALKING WIND SPEEDS OF THIS MAGNITUDE. THE OTHER WORRY CONTINUES TO BE THAT THIS -- DISRUPTION TO TRAVEL AS WELL. THE BIGGER PROBLEM IS, DO NOT EXPECT BIG IMPROVEMENTS DURING THE DAY ON FRIDAY, BECAUSE OUR TEMPERATURES WILL BE BETWEEN ZERO AND FIVE ABOVE. ROAD TREATMENT IS LESS EFFECTIVE WHEN YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT TEMPERATURES THAT COLD. THE IMPACTS WILL BE HIGH ON FRIDAY EVEN THOUGH THE WORST OF THE WEATHER IS LIKELY TO MOVE IN WHILE WE GO TO BED THURSDAY NIGHT AND THE SNOW WILL BE OVER BY THE TIME YOU WAKE UP ON FRIDAY, BUT THE EFFECTS WILL LINGER THROUGH THE DAY. ON THURSDAY, A LITTLE RAIN AND WIND. THE WEATHER IS ESSENTIALLY QUIET UP UNTIL THURSDAY. WE WILL HAVE A BEAUTIFUL DAY TOMORROW. SHOWERS THURSDAY MORNING. THURSDAY EVENING, IT IS STILL RAINING. WE WILL LIKELY BE IN THE MID 40’S. A STRONG COLD FRONT COMES THROUGH BY 10:00 P.M. A QUICK TRANSITION OVER TO SNOW AND HERE IS THE PROBLEM. BY MIDNIGHT, TEMPERATURES ARE CRASHING TO THE TEENS AND SINGLE DIGITS. I THINK OVERNIGHT THURSDAY INTO FRIDAY, IT WILL BE IMPRESSIVE WITH THE SNOW AND WIND. IT WILL GET NASTY PRETTY QUICKLY. THE SNOW WAS GONE BY THE TIME YOU WAKE UP FRIDAY MORNING. RIGHT NOW, SNOWFALL AMOUNTS IN THE 1-3 INCH RANGE, WITH SOME AREAS POSSIBLY SEEING AS MUCH AS FOUR. LOOK AT THESE WIND CHILLS AT 7:00 FRIDAY MORNING. TEMPERATURES 25-30 DEGREES BELOW ZERO. THAT IS DANGEROUS COLD. IT MAKES 33 FEEL WARM. TEMPERATURES IN THE 20’S IN THE SUBURBS IN MOST LOCATIONS. A NICE WARM UP TOMORROW AS WE GET CLOSE TO 50 BY AFTERNOON. 48 FOR A HIGH. HERE IS A LOOK AT YOUR DAY PLANNER, PRETTY NICE FROM START TO FINISH AROUND THE AREA. HOPEFULLY YOU ARE TRAVELING TOMORROW VERSUS THURSDAY NIGHT INTO FRIDAY. 40° ON THURSDAY. -- 48 DEGREES ON THURSDAY. THIS LOOKS TO BE A VERY IMPACTFUL WINTER STORM.

THE LIVES OF KIDS. LET’S GET A LOOK OF THAT FORECAST. TODAY IS LOOKING DECENT. THERE IS THIS FOG. KATIE: IT’S NOT TERRIBLY WIDESPREAD. IT’S A BIT OF A HEADACHE THIS MORNING. WE’VE GOT QUARTER-MILE OR LESS VISIBILITY. THAT IN PLACE FOR OUR GREAT HIGHLIGHTED COUNTIES. YOU CAN SEE WITH THE VISIBILITY ISSUES ARE. THERE IS NO VISIBILITY IN GEORGETOWN AND BROOKSVILLE. CINCINNATI COMES UP TO TWO MILES FOR VISIBILITY. WE WILL BE IN AN OUT OF THIS FAIRLY DENSE FOG FOR A GOOD CHUNK OF THE MORNING. TODAY, WE GET 56 FOR THE HEIGHT. THEN WE ARE GOING TO BE LOOKING AT MAINLY CLOUDY SKIES. WE CAN’T RULE OUT A SINGLE OR TWO. -- SPRINKLE OR TWO. THE NIGHT, LOOK FOR MILD TEMPERATURES FOR THIS TIME OF YEAR. WE SHOULD BE AROUND 48-50 DEGREES. IT IS GOING TO BE THE BILLS GAME. HOME TOMORROW NIGHT. PLAN ON SHOWERS FOR THAT. UP UNTIL THEN, IT IS CLOUDY AND MORE SPRINGLIKE. YOUR TAILGATE LOOKS MOSTLY DRY. SOME MODELS HAVE BEEN BRINGING IN AN ISOLATED SHOWER. FOR KICKOFF, SCATTERED RAIN WILL BE MOVING IN. YOU WILL NEED TO BRING THE RAIN GEAR WITH YOU TOMORROW NIGHT. AS THE GAME PROGRESSES, WE ARE LOOKING AT THE OPPORTUNITY FOR SOME STEADIER RAINFALL. FUTURECAST AS YOU HAD THROUGH TODAY WILL SHOW CLOUD COVER. WE WILL STAY MOSTLY CLOUDY THROUGH THAT :00 TOMORROW MORNING. WE HAVE A POSSIBLE ISOLATED SHOWERS. IT’S MORE LIKELY THROUGH 5:00 WHEN WE START TO SEE OUR FIRST HIT AND MISS SHOWERS. AS YOU HEAD TOWARD 9:00 WHEN THE GAME IS GETTING STARTED, LOOK FOR SCATTERED LIGHT RAINFALL. AS YOU HEAD TOWARD MIDNIGHT, THAT IS WHEN THIS LEADING EDGE OF HEAVY RAIN WILL BE COMING INTO THE AREA. IF THE GAME GOES LATE INTO THE EVENING, WE WILL BE LOOKING AT THE OPPORTUNITY FOR WET WEATHER. ESPECIALLY WALKING BACK TO YOUR CAR. FROM LOOKING AHEAD TO HAVE YOUR SHOUTERS, THERE WILL BE THUNDER OVERNIGHT MONDAY INTO TUESDAY. THE HEAVIEST RAINFALL IS BETWEEN MIDNIGHT AND 6:00 IN THE MORNING. WE ARE LOOKING AT WATER IT TO LIGHT RAINFALL AS YOU HEAD THROUGH AND :00. WE SHOULD START TO DRY THINGS OUT. YOUR FORECAST RAINFALL IS PRETTY SIGNIFICANT. ANYWHERE FROM AN INCH AND A HALF FOR MOST COMMUNITIES. IT WILL BE WIDESPREAD. IT’S GOING TO BE YOUR BEST BET FOR SEEING HIGHER TOTALS. WHETHER IMPACT DAYS FOR MONDAY AND TUESDAY, NOTICE THIS WARMING TREND. TUESDAY’S HIGH IS 66. THE RECORD TO BE TO 67. WE WILL COME CLOSE TO A RECORD HIGH. WE HAVE BIG CHANGES WEDNESDAY. WE WILL DROP TEMPERATURES. THEY WILL BE FALLING THROUGH MIDNIGHT. WE WILL BE CRASHING INTO THE 30’S AND 40’S FOR THURSDAY. WE HAVE A CHILL IN THE AIR FOR FRIDAY AND SATURDAY.

JOINING US JOINING ME HERE KATIE DONOVAN AND KATIE. WE’RE NOT SEEING A WHITE CHRISTMAS. WE ARE SEEING A WET AND SOGGY AND WARM CHRISTMAS. YEP, AND WE LOVE IT. YEAH, WE LEOV IT. I DON’T MIND IT. I KNOW A LOT OF YOU ARE HOPING FOR A WHITE CHRISTMAS. WE DID HAVE SOME SNOW LAST YEAR TEMPERATURE OF 18. SOE' WR’ JUST DOING I’M HOPING TO BREAK SOME RECORDS. YEAH. I’M HOPING SO TOO. WE WERE SAYING THAT IF GOING TO BE WARM IN DECEMBER. I WANTED TO BE LIKE RECD ORWARM. YEAH, WE’RE GONNA BE BREAKING RECORDS IF IT’S GOING TO BE WARM IN DECBEEMR SO IT CAN BE ALL OR NOTHING WE CAN HAVE WINTER WE CAN HAVE JUST CRAZY OUT OF CONTROL MILD AIR. SO LIVE LOOK AT LEBANON RIGHT NOW IF YOU’RE WINAKG UP OUT THAT WAY MERRY CHRISTMAS. THANKS SO MUCH FOR TUNING IN NOW. YOU’VE GOT A L OOTF CCKLO COVER IN YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD ALONG WITH SOME RAIN SHOWERS. SO RAIN COMING DOWN IN THE LEBANON AREA. IT’S PRETTY LIGHT RIGHT NOW, BUT WE HAVE BEEN SEEGIN SOME WAVES OF HEAVIER RAINFALL ACROSS THE THIS MORNING LIVE RADAR SHOWING THE LKBU OF THAT NORTH OF CINCINNATI. YOU’VE GOT SOME SPOTTY SHOWERS TO THE ETAS THOUGH THROUGH ADAMS COUNTY PLACES UP INTO HIGHLAND COUNTY BROWN COUNTY SEEING SOME LIGHT RAINFALL AS WELL. YOU MIGHT HAVE SOME POCKETS OF LOCALLY MODERATE RAINFALL NTHOR AND EAST OF HILLSBORO PLACES AROUND CLINTON COUNTY SEEGIN SOME HEAVIER SHOWERS AROUND SABINA AND THEN BACK TOWARDS KINGMAN LITTLE LOCALLY HVYEA WNDOPOUR THAT’S GONNA CROSS 71 THERE NORTH OF WILMINGTON AND ENTH FURTHER EAST OR WEST I SHOULD SAY WE’VE GOT ONGOING SHOWERS. SPRINGBORO INTO THE OREGONIA AREA SO LOCALLY MODERN RAINFALL AND THAT TREND CONTINUES TO FURTHER WEST YOU GO HERE SOUTH OF MIDDLETOWN SGIN A PRETTY GOOD LITTLE SHOWER HERE THAT JUST PASSED THROUGH TRENTON PLACES AROUND COLLINSVILLE STARTING TO SEE LESS RAIN AS THE HEAVIER ACTITYVI MESOV EAST OF YOU AREAS AROUND FAYETTE AND UNION COUNTY IN INDIANA SEEING SEOM STEADIER RAIN SHOWERS. WE'R’T A A HIGH OF 66 AND IF WE REACH THAT, WHICH I THINK WE WILL WE’RE GOING TO ATTIRE RECORD HIGH FOR TODAY. SO SOME UNSEASONABLE WARMTH FOR THIS TIME OF THE YEAR BREEZY CONDITIONS WITH SOME GUSTS AROUND 2250- MILES PER HOUR. MAYBE SOME LOCALLY HIGH GUESTS TO 30 THEN THROUGH TONIGHT. I THINK WE SRTTA TO DRY THINGS OUT SO LOOKING AT MOSTLY CLOUDY TO CLOUDY SKIES TEMPERATURES RIGHT AROUND 41 DEGREES YOUR FUTURE CAST THROUGH THE REST OF THIS AFTERNOON SHOWS THOSE HIT AND MISS LIGHT SHOWERS IF WE CAN GET INTO INTO ENOUGH OF A BREAK IN THAT. ALL I THINK WE DO HAVE THE POTENTIAL TO WMAR TO THE MID-60S TODAY. SO LOOKING AT THE OPPORTUNITY FOR SOME VERY MILD AIR HERE. THEN WE’RE GOING TO BE SEEING SOME CHANCES FOR ANOTHER ROUND OF SEOM LOCALLY MODERATES YOU HEAVY SHOWERS EVEN SOME RUMBLES OF THUNDER BETWEEN ABOUT THREE AND SIX SO THAT’S ROLLING THROUGH THIS AFTERNOON ANYTIME AFTER 6. WE’RE GONNA START TO DRY. OUT SO BACK UNDER THE MOSTLY CLOUDY SKIES. I THINK ALL YOU’D BE SEEING AT ISTH POINT WOULD BE A LINGERING SPRINKLE. SO THE BULK OF THAT WOULD BE BEHIND US. AND FOR TOROMROW LOOKING AHEAD TO OHIO 55 MOSTLY CLOUDY TO PARTLY SUNNY AND THEN ANY KIND OF RAIN THAT WE’RE SEEING IS GOING TO BE MOVING IN AFTER NINE O’CLOCK IN THE EVENING. SO GOOD NEWS FOR THE BENGALS FORECAST. TOMORROW TAILGATE TIME LOOKS GOOD. SO CONTINUING WITH THIS UNSEASONABLE WARMTH TREND THEN INTO TUESDAY. INSTEAD WE’VE GOT SOME WEATHER IMPACTS IN PLACE DUE TO SOME STUDY OR RAIN SHOWERS COOLING OFF AND CLEARING

FORECAST, A LOT OF US ARE ADJUSTING OURSELVES TO OUR MIDWEST CHRTMISASN I THE 60’S. KEVIN: IT IS KIND OF LIKE BEING IN SOUTH FLORIDA I GUESS SOMETIMES BECAUSE WE ARE NOT USED TO SEEING TEMPERATURES THIS WARM ON AVERAGE. IN FACT, JUST FOR COMPARISON, LAST CHRISTMAS, THE AFTERNOON HIGH WAS 19 DEGREES. HWEAD A FEW FLUIERRS AROUND. THIS CHRISTMAS, A COMPLEET 180 BECAUSE YOU WILL NOT NEED A HEAVY JACKET. ASHL:EY I AM NOT COMPLAINING, JUST SHOCKED. KEVIN: I THINK A LOT OF FOLKS ARE PERMITTED I HAVE GOTTEN A LOT OF QUESTIONS ON SOCIAL MEDIA. IS THIS ETH NEW NORM, WHAT WE SHOULD EXPECT MOVING FORWARD? I WOULD NOT ACCEPT EVERY CHRISTMAS TO BE LIKE THIS. ASHLEY: YOU ARE TELLING US THIS WASN’T EL NIÑO WINTER. KEVIN: LA NIÑA, THE OPPOSITE OF EL NIÑO. AS A RESULT, THE COLD AIR TENDS TO BE CKLOED UP IN CANADA AND IN THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST. IN FT,AC IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR SNOW AND STORMY, WINTRY WEATHER, YOU HAVE TO HEAD OUT TO THE ROCKIES, THE CASCADE, THE PACIFIC NORTHSTWE, SEATTLE, PORTLAND. THAT IS WHERE THE WINTRY WEATHER WILL BE OVER THE CHRISTMAS HOLIDAY WEEKEND. CERTAINLY NOT ACROSS THE EAST. IN FACT, HEREON TIGHT, RADAISR QUIET. WE HAVE CLOUDS THAT ROLLED IN, NOT YIELDING ANY RAIN YET, BUT THEY WILL IN DUE TIME. HERE IS THE WEATHER MAP TONIGHT. MILD AIR ALREADY IN PLACE ACROSS THE OHIO VALLEY BUT THERE IS EVEN MILDER AIR LURKING TO OUR SOUTH. IN FACT, ST. LOUIS, FOR EXAMPLE, 72 DEGREES ON CHRISTMAS E.VE THAT IS SOME OF THE MILD AIR THAT IS GOING TO SURGE IN HERE TOMORROW AND BRING US THE POTENTIAL FOR NEW RECORD-BREAKINGR O RECORD-BREAKING WARMTH ON CHRISTMAS DAY. AMI ALSO TRACKING THE STORM CENTER OUT YOUR KANSAS CITY. IT IS GOING TO HEAD UP TOWARDS CHICAGO AT OVER TO AROUND CLEVELAND. BECAUSE WE WILL BE ON THE SOUTH SIDE OF THAT, WE ENJOY THE WARM CHRISTMAS DAY BUT ALSO RUN THE RISK OF RAIN. IN FACT, RAIN IS A PRETTY GOOD LIKELIODHO AND MOST LIKELY TO BE THE MOST IMPACTFUL ON CHRISTMAS DAY TOMORROW. WE WILL HAVE SOME SHOWERS AROUND HERE ARE STARTING TO DEVELOP LATER ON TONIGHT, PROBABLY AFTER 9:00 OR 10:00, AND THEN ANOTHER CHANCE FOR RAIN AS WE CLOSE OUT THE WEEKEND ON SUNDAY NIGHT. BUT THAT SHOULD HOLD OFF UNTIL AFTER BENGALS ACTION. YOUR CHRISTMAS OUTOKLO HERE TONIGHT, TEMPERATURES CLIMBING TOWARDS 60. IT WILL STAY BREEZY OUT. OF COURSE COME ON CHRISTMAS DAY, RAIN IS LIKELY WITH NEAR RECORD-SETTING WARMTH. RIGHT NOW WITH THE CLOUDSND A RAIN AROUND, WE MAY COME UP A DEGREE OR TWO SHY OF 66. THAT IS THE RECORD FOR TOMORROW. WE WILL SEE HOW THINGS PLAY OUT. IT IS 57 OUTSIDE RIGHT NOW. THERE IS THE BRISK SOUTHWESTERLY WIND. AGAIN, IT WILL STAY BREEZY THROUGHOUT THE CHRISTMAS HOLIDAY EKWEEND. JUST KIND OF KEEP THAT IN MIND. TEMPERATURES RIGHT NOW, 60 IN MAYSVILLE. 56 IN BATAVIA. SOMAN IS A 54. LOW 50’S IN SOUTHEAST INDIANA. LET ME SHOW YOU THE FUTURECAST. SHOWER CHANCES WILL INCREASE AFTER 9:00 OR 10:00. MIDNIGHT, THEY MAY BE A LITTLE MORE WIDESPREAD. ALL OF THISS I VERY LIGHT. THE MORE IMPACTFUL RAIN MOVES IN BY CHRISTMAS MORNING. WHILE I DO NOT THINK IT IS A WASHOUT CHRISTMAS MORNING, BECAUSE I THINK FOR SEVERAL HOURS WE WILL SEE A DECREASE IN THE RAIN, THERE WILL BE THE THREAT FOR WHAT WEATHER AROUND AND POTENTIALLY EVEN A RUMBLE OF THUNDER THROUGH THE AFTERNOON. I THINK BY 6:00, THE RAIN IS OUT OF HERE AND TH WE ENSTART TO COOL OFF AS WE HEAD INTO CHRISTMAS DAY NIGHT. THERE IS A LOOK AT WHICH ABE A. NICE DAY FORFOOTBALL ON SUNDAY BEFORE WE CLOUD UP AND RAIN AGAIN SUNDAY NIGHT SOME SPOTTY -- THERE IS A LOOK AT WHAT SHOULD BE A NICE DAY FOR FOOTBALL ON SUNDAY BEFORE WE CLOUD UP AND RAIN AGAIN SUNDAY NIGHT. THE FIRST HALF OF YOUR DAY IMPACTED THEM -- THE MOST TOMORR.OW HERE IS YOUR SEVEN DAY FORECAST. THERE IS A LOOK AT 55 ON SUNDAY SO IT STAYS MILD THROUGH THE HOLIDAY WEEKEND. HOW ABOUT ON MONDAY? I AM GOING CONSERVATIVE HERE. THERE ARE SOME SUGGESTIONS WE COULD GET OVER 70 ON MONDAY. WE WILL SEE. I WILL KEEP IT IN THE 60’S FOR NOW. OBVIOUSLY,T I IS PRETTY WARM ALMOST THROUGH THE END OF 2021. JUST AS WE TGE TO THURSDAY AND FRIDAY, SOME COOLER AIR GETS IN HERE. THAT IS STILL NOT BAD FOR THE END

Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex shared the first photo of their daughter, Lilibet "Lili" Diana, as part of their 2021 holiday card, released six months after she was born.Meghan is seen happily holding Lilibet in the air, while Harry balances their son Archie on his lap in the image, taken by photographer Alexi Lubomirski."This year, 2021, we welcomed our daughter, Lilibet, to the world," the couple wrote on the front of the card. "Archie made us a 'Mama' and a 'Papa,' and Lili made us a family."Meghan gave birth to Lilibet — named after her great grandmother, Queen Elizabeth, who goes by that nickname — in a Santa Barbara hospital in June this year. The royal pair then explained that they were donating money this year to several organizations "that honor and protect families," including those that focus on Afghan resettlement, and organizations supporting paid parental leave in the U.S.Christmas is looking a little different for the British royal family this year due to the surge in omicron cases in the UK.Harry's grandmother Queen Elizabeth II will be joined by Prince Charles and his wife Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall on Christmas at Windsor Castle, changing her plans due to the increase in cases. In a typical year, the Queen travels to her country estate of Sandringham for the family's annual Christmas retreat. But in recent weeks, the palace has been taking added precautions due to coronavirus, including canceling a pre-Christmas lunch that the monarch typically hosts for extended family.

ALL RIGHT, KATIE DONOVAN IS HERE TO TALK ABOUT YOUR FORECAST. TSLO OF SUNSHINE OUTSIDE, AND IT IS COMPLETELY DRY AND COLD. KATI IT IS COLD BUT WE CAN’T REALLY COMPLAIN WITH HOW NICE TH DISECEMBER HAS BEEN. COUPLE OF DAYS IN THE 30’S TSHI MONTH, THIS IS ONE OF THEM AND WE WILL CONTINUE TO SEE TO CHILL THROUGH THE EVENING. BUNDLE UP, THE SUNSHINE WILL HELP. BRISK AT TIMES WITH A CONTINDUE BREEZE. HIGH PRESSURE OVERHEAD KEEPING US NICE DAN DRY, STARTING TO MOVE EAST AGAIN. YOU SEE THE WARM FRONT TO THE WEST SHOD MARK IT’S HEADED OUR DIRECTION OVER THE NEXT COUPLE DAYS. TAKE ALL THAT MILD AIR IN THROUGH THE IO VALLEY. TEMPERATURE WISE WE WILL BE BACK INTO THE UNSEASONABLEAR W THROUGH THE WEEKEND. FUTURECAST THROUGHHE T REST OF TODAY SHOWS A SKIES WITH MAINLY SUNNY CONDITIONS THROUGH SUNSET TONIGHT. CLEAR AS YOU HEAD TOWARDS THE CLOSING HOUR OF THOSE STORES. BRING THAT HEAVY COAT FORE SUR OVERNIGHT, MOSTLY CLEAR SKIES EXPECTED WITH TEMPERATURES DROPPING INTO TOMORROW MORNING, WAKING UP TO A MIXTURE OF CLDSOU AND SUNSHINE TOMORROW. HIGH CLOUDS ROLLING THROUGH THE MID-LEVEL CLOU,DS THICKENING UP EVEN MORE THROUGH THURSDAY AFTERNOON. INCREASING CLOUDS WILL BE THE TREND THROUGH YOUR THURSDAY WITH CLOUDS NOT BRINGINUSG RNAI FOR THURSDAY AFTERNOON OR EVENING BUT THAT DOES CHANGE AS YOU HEAD INTO FRIDAY, CHRISTMAS EVE. CLOUDS FOR TOMORROW ARE A SIGN OF CHANGE. 37 DEGESRE TODAY, MUCH COOLER COMPARED TWHO ERE WE HAVE BEEN. WIND OUT OF THE NTHWESTOR AT FIVE TO 15 MILES PER HOUR. TODAY, BEZREY AT TIMES. <p>A little town nestled in rural Indiana is named after the man in the big red suit, and that’s not by accident. Santa Claus, Indiana, is home to the only Santa Claus post office in America. He gets thousands of letters every year from kids all over the world. </p>
<p>“Santa needs a lot of help because Santa is busy making toys, busy getting ready for the big trip, getting the sleigh ready. The elves are working very hard, so we have to ask for help for Santa to answer all these letters," Mrs. Koch said. “I grew up with Santa Claus in my home.”</p>
<p>Her father found his calling early, as one of Santa's helpers</p>
<p>“And by the way, the beginning of my father being Santa Claus happened when he was 19 years old on the USS New York on Brooklyn navy yard as a young sailor," Mrs. Koch said. “And he said, and these are his words, 'Dear God, if I live through this war, this is what I will do. I will make children happy by being Santa Claus,' and he was.”</p>
<p>For 54 years, he carried out that work in Santa Claus, Indiana.</p>
<p>“I found those letters that my father had answered in the 30s and of course children were asking for underwear, socks and mittens. Now Xbox and computers and sometimes I don’t even know what they are talking about," Mrs. Koch said.</p>
<p>Mrs. Koch is an expert when it comes to the letters written in English, but when she gets letters in other languages, that’s when more of Santa’s helpers step in. Anja is from Switzerland. She read a letter from a girl in Germany who is worried about the pandemic.</p>
<p>"She says, 'I hope all the people will learn to live with COVID next year,'" Anja said.</p>
<p>It’s some of the same things kids in America are writing about.</p>
<p>“One child said, please wear gloves when you get my letter out of the envelope," Mrs. Koch said.</p>
<p>This is an opportunity for these foreign-exchange helpers to see just how similar kids are all over the world.</p>
<p>“It’s so cool to see that it’s all over the world and that we have something in common," Anja said.</p>
<p>“Santa is real. Santa is just so special and so magical and so much beyond what our world is," Mrs. Koch said. “Santa Claus is what’s wonderful. A caring, loving, giving, selfless human being that makes people happy, that sacrifices on that sleigh by going all over the world to make everybody happy, not picking and choosing everybody.”</p>
<p>The letters are far beyond a piece of paper. They are magic, spirit, and a reminder that every child, no matter where they are, is being heard and is loved by Santa.</p>
<p>“Ya know, I always say we should keep the spirit all year. What a wonderful world it would be," Mrs. Koch said.</p>
<p>If you'd like to donate to help keep the letters alive every year, click <a class="Link" href="https://santaclausmuseum.org/membership/">here</a>.</p>

As people enter into a second holiday season in the COVID-19 pandemic, so many are dealing with the loss of a loved one. Dr. Ruth Benca, a psychiatrist with Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist in North Carolina, said she's seen significantly higher rates of depression, anxiety, stress-related illnesses and trouble sleeping over the course of the pandemic. Now, she and other mental health professionals are anticipating the holidays will only add to those issues."There are probably many layers of guilt, particularly with these losses," Benca said. "They think, 'I shouldn't be having a happy time right now because I'm here.' That's survivor's guilt. So I think it's really important to face that, but not do that to yourself. Not beat yourself up. It's important to be accepting of yourself and also be accepting about what you do feel able to do or not over the holidays."Benca said self-checks and self-care are critically important over these next few weeks. She recommends prioritizing sleep and taking time for yourself to work out or just get outside to absorb some sunshine. The doctor also said, when checking in with friends and family, to attempt some kind of face-to-face contact. She said phone calls are helpful, but the most effective way to connect would be over FaceTime or in-person. The holidays also bring up a lot of traditions with loved ones. For many, COVID-19 meant the sudden loss of that person you had a tradition with or the inability to visit them. Benca said you have two options: either continue doing those traditions in honor and memory of them OR find a new tradition that will bring you joy. She reminds patients they can always come back to those previous traditions in a few years when they feel more manageable. Benca said if the feelings are overwhelming to a point of a crisis, to see professional help. You can also always call the National Helpline at 1-800-273-8255.

Christmas is right around the corner, and if you're bringing a tree into your home, there are some fire safety tips that you should know. Along with holiday celebrations come holiday decorations, but those decorations can be dangerous in the home."There's not a single firehouse where we don't hear the stories of the Christmas fire, the holiday season fires," said Mark McConnell, a fire marshal in New Mexico. Christmas trees are the main danger during the winter months. McConnell said the tree we choose for our home is vital. "We're bringing these trees into the homes. They're beautiful and they're great, but they dry out, and we have a lot of electrical around them," McConnell said. That's the difference: a dry tree and a watered tree. "If that dry tree catches, there's a chance that it'll go out of control to a point where there'll be horrible damage by the time we get there," McConnell said. So how can we be sure to pick the right tree? McConnell said when you buy the tree, you want to make sure that the pines don't just fall apart as you touch it. He also said that when you leave the house for holiday travel, unplug the electrical hazards next to it. Make sure that your tree is 3 feet away from any type of heating source. What if you're not bringing in a tree for the holidays? McConnell said we still have to be careful making those sweet holiday desserts. "A lot of our fires are gonna be when the oven is really dirty inside, hasn't been cleaned for years," McConnell said. "And some of that particulate that's been left in there is gonna catch fire."Watch the full story in the video above.

With Thanksgiving now behind us, the holiday shopping season is officially in full swing. Black Friday, Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday deals are helping families cash in on discounted gifts. While the rush of business is greatly needed by smaller businesses that were impacted by last year's COVID-19 shutdowns, many say supply may not be able to keep up.Greenhaven Ace Hardware in California has been locally owned since 1976. Nicholas Dellos, the store's manager, said business so far this holiday shopping weekend has doubled its usual amount. The shop ordered its holiday items back in January 2020. Almost a year later, they're still waiting for some product to arrive."Normally we have a lot more variety here," Dellos said while walking past the holiday lights section. "Lots of different types of lights that we just weren't able to get this year." Supply chain issues and back-ups at California ports are raising prices, too. "Everything's gone up 30 percent or more," Dellos explained. "It's unreal."Whether you need lights, tree stands, Santa hats or extension cords, you can find them at most hardware stores. Dellos' advice to those hoping to deck the halls of their home? Don't wait. Demand is high and there's "not enough supply to keep up." Gregg Jones agrees. He owns "Chad's Christmas Trees" at the Greenhaven Plaza Shopping Center in California and has been in business for eight years. "This year has been a challenge for sure," he said. With demand up, supply down and shipping prices on the rise due to supply chain delays, Christmas trees have a higher price tag this year. He said silvertip trees, which many refer to as "Charlie Brown trees," are up about 15%. "We try to do what we can to make it fair for everybody, but the costs go up," he said. "There's not much we can do."He said customers should consider buying their tree earlier this season due to low inventory. Larger trees are more in demand, as well. The last holiday season was far from the most wonderful time of the year for the U.S. Postal Service: Sick and quarantined workers, a flood of packages from shoppers loathe to set foot in stores and a last-minute dump of packages from overwhelmed private shippers.Postal workers who recall packages and letters piled up in distribution hubs are better prepared this time as they gear up for another pandemic crunch. But low product inventories and port and supply chain disruptions are creating new uncertainty about getting gifts delivered.Already, workers are seeing a surge in holiday packages that began several weeks ago.“A lot of the workers are saying, ‘Oh no. Here we go again,’” said Scott Adams, local president of the American Postal Workers Union in Portland. The U.S. Postal Service and private shippers UPS and FedEx are bolstering their hiring — bringing in about 230,000 temporary workers — and taking other steps to ensure they don’t become overwhelmed by packages.Nearly 3.4 billion parcels are expected to crisscross the country this holiday season, representing an estimated increase of about 400 million compared to last year, said Satish Jindel, from Pennsylvania-based ShipMatrix, which analyzes shipping package data. When cards and letters are included, the U.S. Postal Service said it'll be delivering more than 12 billion items.“The pandemic is still here. The supply chain is a challenge that’s going to impact how people shop and how products move,” said Mark Dimondstein, president of the American Postal Workers Union, which represents more than 200,000 postal workers.Despite the precarious situation, the Postal Service, UPS and FedEx are in better shape to handle the peak volume, and several trends could work in their favor, Jindel said.More people are shopping in stores compared to last year, and people have been placing online orders earlier because they’re keenly aware of supply chain problems, Jindel said. Also, with workers returning to offices, there are fewer office supply shipments being made to homes, he said. Most importantly, the shippers are adapting after their rough-and-tumble experience last year, he said.U.S. Postmaster General Louis DeJoy, who faced withering criticism last year but reported on-time improvements and reduced operating losses this month, says the service is ready for the crunch.“We are ready, so send us your packages and your mail,” he said.A year ago, more than a third of Postal Service first-class mail was late by the time Christmas arrived.Tractor-trailers stuffed with mail were left idling outside some postal-sorting facilities. Packages and letters piled up in distribution hubs. Delays grew by days, and then weeks, in many instances. Two things were painfully obvious. More workers and more space were needed — and both are being addressed. To get a handle of the volume, the Postal Service is transitioning more than 30,000 non-career employees to the ranks of career employees by peak season, hiring 40,000 seasonal employees, and leasing extra space at more than 100 locations to ensure there’s room for parcels. The Postal Service installed more than 100 new package sorting machines as of early November, part of $40 billion of planned investment over 10 years. Also, more than 50 package systems capable of sorting large packages are expected to be deployed before December. Combined, these expand capacity by an additional 4.5 million packages per day, officials said.UPS, for its part, is hiring more than 100,000 seasonal employees across the country and continues to add aircraft and automation. It expects nearly 90% of its packages to flow through automated facilities by year’s end.FedEx, meanwhile, is in the process of boosting its nationwide workforce by 90,000 across its operating companies. Most of those new workers are expected to remain after the holidays, the company said.Despite all those extra workers, the shippers agree that this is not the year for shoppers to procrastinate.“Complete your holiday shopping as soon as possible,” said Jim Mayer, spokesperson for UPS.

<p>A year ago, more than a third of Postal Service first-class mail was late by the time Christmas arrived.</p>
<p>Tractor-trailers stuffed with mail were left idling outside some postal-sorting facilities. Packages and letters piled up in distribution hubs. Delays grew by days, and then weeks, in many instances.</p>
<p>Two things were painfully obvious. More workers and more space were needed — and both are being addressed.</p>
<p>To get a handle of the volume, the Postal Service is transitioning more than 30,000 non-career employees to the ranks of career employees by peak season, hiring 40,000 seasonal employees, and leasing extra space at more than 100 locations to ensure there’s room for parcels.</p>
<p>The Postal Service installed more than 100 new package sorting machines as of early November, part of $40 billion of planned investment over 10 years. Also, more than 50 package systems capable of sorting large packages are expected to be deployed before December. Combined, these expand capacity by an additional 4.5 million packages per day, officials said.</p>
<p>UPS, for its part, is hiring more than 100,000 seasonal employees across the country and continues to add aircraft and automation. It expects nearly 90% of its packages to flow through automated facilities by year’s end.</p>
<p>FedEx, meanwhile, is in the process of boosting its nationwide workforce by 90,000 across its operating companies. Most of those new workers are expected to remain after the holidays, the company said.</p>
<p>Despite all those extra workers, the shippers agree that this is not the year for shoppers to procrastinate.</p>
<p>“Complete your holiday shopping as soon as possible,” said Jim Mayer, spokesperson for UPS.</p>

<p>DENVER, Colo. — Airlines are struggling to keep up with demand.</p>
<p>American Airlines has canceled more than 1,800 flights across the country since Friday. It's the second major airline to experience major problems in the last three weeks. Southwest Airlines canceled more than 2,000 flights in mid-October.</p>
<p>“You can go back all the way to start of the summer travel season, we saw this roll across the airlines from United to American, and recently we saw Southwest,” said Skyler McKinley, a representative with AAA. “Every airline is struggling with the same factors. There’s also a lot of uncertainty. Right now, airlines are going above and beyond— allowing passengers to cancel their flights in the pandemic.”</p>
<p>Not only does American Airlines blame staffing shortages for the issues, but severe winds in its largest hub of Dallas Fort Worth</p>
<p>American Airlines expects to have 1,800 flight attendants to return this week, and more to be on the job by Dec. 1.</p>
<p>With the holiday season around the corner, experts are aware of the worries travelers have. But there is some good news, McKinley says.</p>
<p>“Right now is where you want to see the hiccups,” McKinley said. “Because seeing them now generally is a sign that the airlines are balancing for everything else. When they know they’ll have a surge in demand, they’re going be able to rise to meet it.”</p>
<p>According to Business and Economic Journalist Marc Stewart, airline apps and early ticket purchases will be a traveler's best friend.</p>
<p>“Take the first flight of the day, yes it may mean getting up early, but the airlines try to keep an online schedule first thing in the morning,” Stewart said. “If your flight is canceled or delayed, oftentimes you’ll be put on another flight or another connecting flight and use the app instead of waiting in line or on hold, if you go to the app on your phone the airlines have already provided you another option.”</p>
<p>Mckinley said problems with air travel won't be fixed overnight. He expects them to persist for the next couple of years.</p>

<div>
<p>DENVER, Co. — Sean Holland has driven the same route for work every day for more than 20 years. He says it hasn't gotten boring yet.</p>
<p>"It's not your 9 to 5 job," Holland said. "If that's what you're looking for, this isn't it."</p>
<p>Holland is a UPS driver in suburban Denver. He took the job in the early '90s, and since 1995, he's been driving the same truck: Bertha.</p>
<p>"I've had her, next month, it will be 26 years," Holland said. "The old girl, she comes out full to the gills every day. I get rid of all that, and then we do another pickup run in the afternoon and fill it back up. There's a sense of accomplishment that goes along with that."</p>
<p>Holland and delivery drivers across the country were deemed essential workers at the height of the pandemic. Stay-at-home orders forced people to use delivery services at a higher rate. U.S. parcel volume went up 37% from 2019 to 2020.</p>
<p>UPS is hiring 100,000 seasonal workers this year to keep up with the demand as the holidays approach. But they are competing with other major companies in nearly every industry.</p>
<p>"We have a very robust recruiting approach," said Jeff Bloedorn, director of human resources at UPS. "We are heavily into the social media and making people aware of what UPS offers."</p>
<p>The company is starting some new hires at $23 an hour, with a $2,000 signing bonus. Bloedorn says there are other incentives, many of which can't be measured with dollars and cents.</p>
<p>"It’s a great teamwork atmosphere," Bloedorn said. "[People] like the hustle and bustle of moving all the packages... It’s a career that allows a person to take care of themselves and their family."</p>
<p>The pandemic has shifted a younger generation's opinion of work. A UPS survey found 9 in 10 millennials are "more open" to the types of jobs they'd accept.</p>
<p>But experts warn the life of a truck driver is still a difficult sell.</p>
<p>"I always ask my students this," said Dr. Robert Novack, a professor at Penn State University. "'How many of you would like to grow up and be a truck driver?' None of 'em."</p>
<p>Dr. Novack says the under-35 crowd is looking for fulfillment and purpose from a potential career. That can be tough to find from the driver's seat of a delivery truck.</p>
<p>"You see the rigs on the road, and as a car driver, they're an annoyance because they're big, they get in the way," Dr. Novack said. "We're working with some companies on trying to make the job of being a driver a little bit more suited to their needs. You know, treating them almost like an asset."</p>
<p>Holland agrees that the job can be tough. </p>
<p>"It's long hours, but like I said, it's rewarding," he said.</p>
<p>"I actually met my wife on my route out here," Holland said. "She was one of my customers for a couple years before we started dating, and ultimately got married, and now we’re married 21 years.
