11 NEWS HAS HER STORY. BREANA: FROM A YOUNG AGE, GRACE HAS HAD A KNACK FOR TECHNOLOGY AND COMPUTER SCIENCE. &gt;&gt; I THINK IT WAS MOSTLY MY DAD BEING AN ENGINEER AND HE WAS ALWAYS TALKING TO US ABOUT CIRCUITS AND I WAS ALWAYS WONDERING HOW THINGS WORK BREANA: GRACE TOOK THE INTEREST TO HIGH SCHOOL, JOINED THE CYBERSECURITY CLUB AT THE ALL-GIRLS NOTRE DAME PREPARATORY SCHOOL HER FRESHMAN AND SOPHOMORE YEAR, BUT SHE WAS DISAPPOINTED IN THE TURNOUT. &gt;&gt; EVEN THOUGH THERE ARE 600 STUDENTS, THAT CAN JOIN THE CLUB, ONLY ABOUT 10 OR 15 STUDENTS ARE ACTUALLY IN THE CLUB BREANA: JUST DOWN THE ROAD AT THE ALL BOYS LOYOLA LAKEFIELD SHE SAYS THE CYBERSECURITY CLUB IS ONE OF THE SCHOOL’S BIGGEST ACTIVITIES. &gt;&gt; IT HAS MORE THAN 100 STUDENTS INVOLVED, WHICH WAS A REALLY BIG CHANGE. BREANA: SO GRACE JOINED LAKEFIELD CLUB, BECAME THE ONLY GIRL ON THE TEAM. SHE MADE IT HER MISSION TO FIND OUT WHY MORE GIRLS WERE NOT INTERESTED IN CAN PETER SCIENCE. &gt;&gt; THERE JUST ARE NOT A LOT OF RESOURCES THAT ARE AIMED TOWARDS WOMEN. LIKE TEXTBOOKS USUALLY ARE MORE STEREOTYPICAL MALE COLORS AND THERE’S NOT A LOT OF FEMALE ROLE MODELS IN THE FIELD WHICH IS UNFORTUNATE. BREANA: SO SHE SET OUT TO CHANGE THAT. SHE WROTE AND PUBLISHED THIS BOOK, AN INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTER SCIENCE FOR YOUNG PEOPLE. SHARING SOME BASICS ABOUT THE FIELD. &gt;&gt; ON THE COVER OF THE BOOK, I CHOSE COLORS THAT ARE BOTH STEREOTYPICALLY MALE AND FEMALE, SO RED I ALSO INCLUDE STORIES OF SOME REALLY IMPORTANT FEMALE LEADERS. IT IS DEFINITELY GOING TO INSPIRE A LOT OF PEOPLE AND HOPEFULLY, GIRLS, TO JOIN THE FIELD AND HOPEFULLY, THEY WILL SEE ME AND THINK THAT THEY CAN DO SOMETHING AND THAT THEY CAN MAKE A CHANGE. BREANA: LETTING GIRLS OF ALL

A Maryland teenager wants to inspire more girls to study computer science.Grace Brehm, 17, has had a knack for technology and computer science from a young age. She even wrote a book that was released in early July to educate more teens about the field."I think it was just mostly my dad being an engineer, and he was always talking to us about, like, circuits and I was always wondering how things work," Brehm said. She took that interest with her to Notre Dame Preparatory School and joined the cybersecurity club in her freshman and sophomore years, but she was disappointed in the turnout."Unfortunately, there wasn't a lot of interest in the club at my school even though there are, like, 600 students that can join the club — only about 10 or 15 students are actually in the club," Brehm said.Just down the road at the all-boys Loyola Blakefield, Brehm said the cybersecurity club is one of the biggest of its kind in the area."It has more than 100 students involved, which was really a big change from NDP's only 10 students," Brehm said. So, in junior year, Brehm joined Loyola's club and became the only girl on the team. She made it her mission to find out why more girls weren't interested in computer science."There just aren't a lot of resources that are aimed towards women. Like, textbooks usually use more stereotypical males, colors are black and red and black and blue, and there are just not a lot of female role models in the field, which is really unfortunate," Brehm said. So, she set out to change that. The teen wrote and published the book "An Introduction to Computer Science for Young People," which shares some basics about the field."On the cover of the book, I chose colors that are both stereotypically male and female -- so, red, blue, purple — and things to try to get everyone involved. I also chose to include the stories of some really important female leaders," Brehm said. "I hope it is definitely going to inspire a lot of people, and hopefully girls, to join the field, and hopefully, they will see me and think that they can do something and that they can make a change." A Ryle High School Junior made school history Thursday after he scored a 60-yard goal within seconds of kickoff. During the varsity soccer match between Ryle and Boone County high schools, Josh Line saw an opportunity when he noticed the goalie off his line and went for the goal shot and ended up making it from 60 yards. Watch video player above to see the goal The junior might have gotten his inspiration from warming up with the team's Lance Paul No. 5 jersey in memory of their teammate who died last September and from his Kings Hammer coach Eric Rothwell telling him, "Josh, with your leg, if you ever have an opportunity and the goalie is off the line, take it." Line recorded the longest goal in Ryle's history for his 60-yard goal, and the Ryle Raiders took the win over the Boone County Rebels, 9-1.

<p>The process of getting into college is changing. More schools are now offering admission to students who never applied.</p>
<p>"We're hearing students say like, 'Is this real?' You know, they get so much marketing and brochures from so many sources. And when I say, actually, 'No on the EAB match platform, the messages you get are real admission offers, they're bona fide admission offers.' And yeah, it's often disbelief followed by elation," said Joe Morrison, who serves as the managing director of Concourse at EAB.</p>
<p>The platform offers reverse admissions. Students get into the system through their school counselor.</p>
<p>The students stay anonymous to the university, which makes an offer based on criteria including grades and interests.</p>
<p>It's up to the students to accept the offer.</p>
<p>A growing number of other organizations are also doing what's known as direct admissions where students also get offers from schools. However, they have to go through an application process still.</p>
<p>The people behind these alternative admission models say it's about making the process more student-centric.</p>
<p>"For a lot of students, they get offers from colleges that they hadn't considered, or sometimes even heard of," Morrison said. "They realized, in many cases, that they're eligible for more in scholarships than they thought. So really, it's enabling a path to college that a lot of students didn't think they were able to access, and probably wouldn't have even applied for."</p>
<p>EAB's platform is free for counselors and students. Universities pay a fee when they get a match with a student.</p>

One of the faces suiting up for the Cincinnati Bengals on Super Bowl is a Greater Cincinnati product.Jackson Carman is serving as proof to future Fairfield football players that hopes of playing in the NFL really can come true."It's surreal to sit in your living room or wherever you're at and just to watch a kid you got to work with and coach and be so close with on that stage, on that field, in that environment," said Fairfield High School head football coach Jason Krause.Krause started coaching Carman when he was in the seventh grade. The two have formed an unbreakable bond."Couple weeks ago, Monday after one of the games he came over to the house and we grilled out. Had a great time just got to spend a little time decompressing from football," Krause said.Krause now coachES Carman in life and is helping him get ready for the biggest game of his career."He was like, 'Coach, you have no idea how crazy this is right now.' And I don't. There's no way I could put myself in his shoes. I said, 'Enjoy this experience. You got into this game as a little kid because you loved it,'" Krause said.Krause is proud of all Carman has accomplished, including some key moments to help clinch the AFC Championship."To see him have a couple of big blocks on big plays, just to hear his name, hear Tony Romo mention Jackson Carman," he said. The rookie has the full backing of his community.A group of cafeteria workers proudly wear Carman's jersey on Fridays. They're part of the Fairfield faithful who are supporting one of their own."He's got a chance to go play in the Super Bowl. It's just awesome to have a kid that you worked with like that. To see all that hard work pay off and in our profession that's the ultimate," Krause said.

A Davis Senior High School student in Davis, California, received a perfect score on his SAT exam. Apurva Mishra's father called sister station KCRA when the results arrived, ecstatic that his son scored a 1600 score, placing him in the 99th percentile in the nation among test-takers. He got every single question correct. The College Board, which administers the exam, told KCRA only "a fraction of a percent" of test takers earn a perfect score. "It was a really surprising thing for me because I didn't know I would be able to perform like that," 17-year-old Mishra said. "I wanted to get there and I did get there, and that was the most amazing thing to me."The senior studied for the exam in his free time, but he doesn't seem to have any. Mishra is student body president, vice-captain of the robotics team, and is currently interning as a software engineer. "Honestly I couldn't believe it," Rajiv Mishra, his father, said with a big smile on his face. "I wasn't very happy with the way he was preparing for the exam. According to me, he was not giving it proper time."He and his wife said they are incredibly proud of their son. They encourage other parents with teenagers taking the SAT to "keep track of their progress" but also to remember your teens "deserve your love and trust." Apurva's not the only genius in the family, though. His older brother, Aakash, is in his junior year at Harvard. "I was just like, 'Oh, he got 20 more points than I did!'" Aakash said while laughing. "Now he can hold that over me."Apurva said he applied to around a dozen colleges and expects to start hearing back in March. "I just hope he gets to choose whatever school he wants to go to," his chemistry teacher saidi. "I'm sure he'll have a lot of choices."

A judge imposed a combined $1 million bond Saturday for the parents of the Michigan teen charged with killing four students at Oxford High School, hours after police said they were caught hiding in a Detroit commercial building.James and Jennifer Crumbley entered not guilty pleas to each of the four involuntary manslaughter counts against them during a hearing held on Zoom. Jennifer Crumbley sobbed and struggled to respond to the judge's questions at times and James Crumbley shook his head when a prosecutor said their son had full access to the gun used in the killings.Judge Julie Nicholson assigned bond of $500,000 apiece to each of the parents and required GPS monitoring if they pay to be released, agreeing with prosecutors that they posed a flight risk.Defense attorneys for the Crumbleys still argued Saturday that they never intended to flee and had made plans to meet their lawyers early that morning. Attorney Shannon Smith accused prosecutors of "cherry picking" facts to release publicly, including that accusation that their teenage son had unrestricted access to the handgun prosecutors say his father purchased for him days before the shooting."Our clients are just as devastated as everyone else," Smith said, adding that the gun "was locked." She didn't provide more detail during Saturday's hearing.Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald’s office filed involuntary manslaughter charges against the Crumbleys on Friday, accusing them of failing to intervene on the day of the tragedy despite being confronted with a drawing and chilling message — "blood everywhere" — that was found at the boy’s desk. They could each face up to 15 years in prison, according to a spokeswoman for McDonald's office. The Crumbleys committed "egregious" acts, from buying a gun on Black Friday and making it available to Ethan Crumbley to resisting his removal from school when they were summoned a few hours before the shooting, McDonald said Friday.Authorities had been looking for the couple since Friday afternoon. Late Friday, U.S. Marshals announced a reward of up to $10,000 each for information leading to their arrests.Smith, the Crumbleys’ attorney, had said Friday that the pair left town earlier in the week "for their own safety" and would be returning to Oxford to face charges.During Saturday's hearing, Smith said they were in touch by phone and text on Friday evening and blamed prosecutors for failing to communicate with her and fellow defense attorney Mariell Lehman."Our clients were absolutely going to turn themselves in; it was just a matter of logistics," she said. But McDonald said on Saturday that the couple took $4,000 out of an ATM on Friday morning in Rochester Hills, not far from the courthouse where they should have appeared that afternoon."These are not people that we can be assured will return to court on their own," she said.A Detroit business owner spotted a car tied to the Crumbleys in his parking lot late Friday, Oakland County Undersheriff Michael McCabe said in a statement. A woman seen near the vehicle ran away when the business owner called 911, McCabe said. The couple was later located and arrested by Detroit police.Detroit Police Chief James E. White said the couple "were aided in getting into the building," and that a person who helped them may also face charges. On Friday, McDonald offered the most precise account so far of the events that led to the shooting at Oxford High School, roughly 30 miles north of Detroit.Ethan Crumbley, 15, emerged from a bathroom with a gun, shooting students in the hallway, investigators said. He’s charged as an adult with murder, terrorism and other crimes.Under Michigan law, the involuntary manslaughter charge filed against the parents can be pursued if authorities believe someone contributed to a situation where there was a high chance of harm or death.Parents in the U.S. are rarely charged in school shootings involving their children, even as most minors get guns from a parent or relative’s house, according to experts.School officials became concerned about the younger Crumbley on Monday, a day before the shooting, when a teacher saw him searching for ammunition on his phone, McDonald said.Jennifer Crumbley was contacted and subsequently told her son in a text message: "Lol. I’m not mad at you. You have to learn not to get caught," according to the prosecutor. On Tuesday, a teacher found a note on Ethan’s desk and took a photo. It was a drawing of a gun pointing at the words, "The thoughts won’t stop. Help me," McDonald said. There also was a drawing of a bullet, she said, with words above it: "Blood everywhere."Between the gun and the bullet was a person who appeared to have been shot twice and is bleeding. He also wrote, "My life is useless" and "The world is dead," according to the prosecutor. The school quickly had a meeting with Ethan and his parents, who were told to get him into counseling within 48 hours, McDonald said. The Crumbleys failed to ask their son about the gun or check his backpack and "resisted the idea of their son leaving the school at that time," McDonald said.Instead, the teen returned to class and the shooting subsequently occurred. In a written statement released Saturday, Oxford Community Schools Superintendent Tim Throne for the first time detailed the school's response to Crumbley's behavior. At the first meeting with a counselor and a staff member, Crumbley said shooting sports were a hobby for his family, Throne said.During the second meeting with guidance counselors, Crumbley claimed the drawings were part of a video game design and said he wanted to pursue a career in that field, the letter said. According to guidance counselors, Crumbley was calm and worked on homework while staff tried to reach his parents and they traveled to the school. The parents did not notify counselors that they had purchased a gun for their son recently during that meeting, Thorne said."Given the fact that the child had no prior disciplinary infractions, the decision was made he would be returned to the classroom rather than sent home to an empty house," he said.Throne had not spoken publicly aside from a video message to the community Thursday. The prosecutor, McDonald, also previously argued that Crumbleys’ parents should have told counselors their son had access to a gun when they were called in for a meeting about his behavior.Jennifer Crumbley texted her son after the shooting, saying, "Ethan, don’t do it," she said on Friday.James Crumbley called 911 to say that a gun was missing from their home and that Ethan might be the shooter. The gun had been kept in an unlocked drawer in the parents’ bedroom, McDonald said.Ethan accompanied his father for the gun purchase on Nov. 26 and posted photos of the firearm on social media, saying, "Just got my new beauty today," McDonald said.Over the long Thanksgiving weekend, Jennifer Crumbley wrote on social media that it is a "mom and son day testing out his new Christmas present," the prosecutor said.Asked at a news conference if the father could be charged for purchasing the gun for the son, McDonald said that would be the decision of federal authorities.McDonald was asked about the decision to keep Crumbley in school."Of course, he shouldn’t have gone back to that classroom. ... I believe that is a universal position. I’m not going to chastise or attack, but yeah," she said.Asked if school officials may potentially be charged, McDonald said: "The investigation’s ongoing."___Foody reported from Chicago Associated Press journalists Ed White and Mike Householder in Detroit; David Eggert in Lansing, Mich., and John O'Connor in Springfield, Ill., also contributed to this report.

A 15-year-old boy was charged with murder and terrorism for a shooting that killed four fellow students and injured others at a Michigan high school, authorities said Wednesday, revealing that his parents were summoned just a few hours before the bloodshed. No motive was offered by Oakland County authorities, a day after violence at Oxford High School, roughly 30 miles north of Detroit. But prosecutor Karen McDonald said the shooting was premeditated, based on a "mountain of digital evidence" collected by police."This was not just an impulsive act," McDonald said.Indeed, sheriff's Lt. Tim Willis told a judge that Ethan Crumbley recorded a video the night before the violence in which he discussed killing students.Crumbley was charged as an adult with murder, attempted murder, terrorism causing death and gun crimes. During his arraignment, he replied, "Yes, I do," when asked if he understood the charges. Defense attorney Scott Kozak entered a plea of not guilty."He deliberately brought the handgun that day with the intent to murder as many students as he could," assistant prosecutor Marc Keast said in successfully arguing for no bail and a transfer to jail from a juvenile facility.Earlier, Sheriff Mike Bouchard told reporters that Crumbley’s parents were called to the school Tuesday "for behavior in the classroom that was concerning." The teen remained in school, and the shooting occurred a few hours later.Keast said in court that Crumbley entered a bathroom with a backpack and came out holding a semi-automatic handgun, firing at students while moving down the hallway. The four students who were killed were identified as 16-year-old Tate Myre, 14-year-old Hana St. Juliana, 17-year-old Madisyn Baldwin and 17-year-old Justin Shilling. Bouchard didn’t offer details about what had troubled school officials. He said investigators believe the gun was already in school."There is nothing that he could have faced that would warrant senseless, absolutely brutal violence on other kids," the sheriff said.Deputies rushed to the school around lunchtime Tuesday and arrested Crumbley in a hallway within minutes of the shooting. His father bought the 9 mm Sig Sauer gun last week, according to the sheriff.McDonald said charges were being considered against the parents."Owning a gun means securing it properly and locking it and keeping the ammunition separate," she said. The shooting should be a wake-up call for new gun laws in a country that has become "desensitized to school shootings," McDonald told reporters."We have to do better," the prosecutor said without offering specific changes. "How many times does this have to happen? How many times?"She said the terrorism charge also fits."What about all the children who ran, screaming, hiding under desks? ... Those are victims, too, and so are their families and so is the community," McDonald said.Video posted on social media showed students rushing to get out of first-floor classroom windows rather than open a door to someone who claimed to be a police officer. The sheriff said he likely was a detective. After the attack, authorities learned of social media posts about threats of a shooting at the roughly 1,700-student school. The sheriff stressed how crucial it is for such tips to be sent to authorities, while also cautioning against spreading social media rumors before a full investigation.Isabel Flores, a 15-year-old ninth grader, told Detroit television station WJBK that she and other students heard gunshots and saw another student bleeding from the face. They then ran from the area through the rear of the school, she said.A concerned parent, Robin Redding, said her son, 12th-grader Treshan Bryant, stayed home Tuesday after hearing threats of a possible shooting."This couldn’t be just random," she said.Bryant said he had heard vague threats "for a long time now" about plans for a shooting.___Associated Press journalists Ryan Kryska, Mike Householder and David Aguilar in Oxford Township, Michigan; Kathleen Foody in Chicago; and Josh Boak in Rosemount, Minnesota, contributed to this report. <p>CINCINNATI — Friday marks the quarterfinal round of high school football action in both Ohio and Kentucky.</p>
<p>Several local teams are playing for a ticket to the semifinals on both sides of the river.</p>
<p><b><u>MOELLER VS. LAKOTA WEST:</u></b><br />The Game of the Week was a matchup between Moeller and Lakota West. West advanced to its second straight regional final by defeating St. X last week, but came up short to Crusaders. Moeller won 21-17 in front of 4,300 people — including 2008 grad and Milwaukee Brewers reliever Brent Suter.</p>

<p>Moeller advances to state semifinals, first time since 2014</p>
<p></span></p>

<p><b><u>WINTON WOODS VS. PIQUA:</u></b><br />Winton Woods got some <a class="Link" href="https://twitter.com/i/status/1461842517633155078">words of wisdom from Tennessee Titans linebacker David Long</a> Friday. The alumnus encouraged the 7 seed to "play for something bigger than yourself" ahead of their game against top-seeded Piqua. It appears Long's words worked as coach Chad Murphy continues to truck in his first season with the team. The Warriors won 38-17.</p>

<p>Winton Woods knocks off top-seeded Piqua</p>
<p></span></p>
<p><b><u>WESTERN BROWN VS. GRANVILLE:</u></b><br />Top-seeded Granville won a shootout with Western Brown, defeating the Broncos 57-49.</p>

<p>Granville wins a shootout with Western Brown</p>
<p></span></p>
<p><b><u>BADIN VS. BELLBROOK:</u></b><br />Badin High School, the top seed in their region, went down 9-0 to start their game against Bellbrook, but immediately worked their way back on top. The Rams scored 21 unanswered points to win 21-9. They play Granville next week with a ticket to Canton on the line. </p>
<p><span class="VideoEnhancement" data-video-disable-history=""></p>
<p>Badin scores 21 unanswered to beat Bellbrook</p>
<p></span></p>
<p><b><u>CLINTON MASSIE VS. MCNICHOLAS:</u></b><br />Clinton-Massie won a close game over McNicholas Friday, 28-27. The Falcons, who do not love to throw the ball, continued to stay grounded in the win. This is the first time Clinton-Massie has moved on to the semifinals since 2007.</p>
<p><span class="VideoEnhancement" data-video-disable-history=""></p>
<p>Clinton-Massie wins close game against McNicholas</p>
<p></span></p>
<p><b><u>SCOTT VS. BOYLE COUNTY:</u></b><br />The only 3 seed left in Kentucky's quarterfinals, Scott, was a big underdog against Boyle County. Despite an impressive playoff run, nothing went the Eagles' way. Scott was eliminated in a 51-14 loss.</p>
<p><span class="VideoEnhancement" data-video-disable-history=""></p>
<p>Scott's playoff run ends with loss at Boyle Co.</p>
<p></span></p>
<p><b><u>BEECHWOOD VS. WALTON-VERONA:</u></b><br />Walton-Verona made the short drive up I-75 to Fort Mitchell Friday, playing Kentucky's gold standard of small school football, Beechwood. The Bearcats tried to be aggressive in the beginning on 4th and 2, but fumbled and the rest was history. Beechwood (13-0) won 50-6. All but one game has been decided by three touchdowns or more.</p>
<p><span class="VideoEnhancement" data-video-disable-history=""></p>
<p>Beechwood rolls to state semifinals, stays unbeaten</p>
<p></span></p>
<p><b><u>TRINITY VS. RYLE:</u></b><br />Trinity took the trip up I-71 to NKY, rolling past Ryle 38-18. Ryle is the first team to score on Trinity in the postseason.</p>
<p><span class="VideoEnhancement" data-video-disable-history=""></p>
<p>Ryle falls to Trinity, 38-18</p>
<p></span></p>
<p><b><u>OTHER SCORES:</u></b><br />- Bishop Brossart saw its undefeated season end on Friday with a 48-7 loss at Raceland.<br />- Newport Central Catholic made the long road trip to Russellville in Western Kentucky, but fell 21-0.<br />- Covington Catholic lost 28-14 at Woodford County.</p>

<p>FORT MYERS, Fla. (<a class="Link" href="https://www.fox4now.com/rebound/state-of-education/school-garden-helping-students-de-stress-and-grow-healthier-food-options-in-fort-myers">WFTX</a>) — Learning is done a little differently for some students at Gateway Charter High School, in Fort Myers, Florida. </p>
<p>For the school’s garden club, it’s about digging in and learning to grow something of their own. </p>
<p>“It’s not often that I’m just able to go outside and get dirty and be able to see and build something that I know is going to blossom into something later,” said senior, Ashley Cieza. </p>
<p>The project this year is building lifted garden beds from wood pallets delivered to the school. </p>
<p>Teachers, like Catherine Dejongkelbosis, say all of the vegetables that are grown will be served as healthy food options at their school.</p>
<p>Dejongkelbosis said it's an experience students don't get inside the classroom. </p>
<p>“I give them a goal, 'Okay, you are going to plant these seeds. Here is the instructions, learn, figure it out. If you make mistakes, it’s okay.' It’s almost an experiment on its own,” she said. </p>
<p>An experiment that’s teaching students to not only be self-sufficient but also more creative when it comes to addressing their mental health.</p>
<p>“One of the teachers who are very special in our school passed away and I was really upset about it and I needed something to de-stress because I was having a really bad day and I was crying a lot so Mrs. Dejongkelbosis offered for me to come outside and help her,” said Cieza. </p>
<p>Since 2017, the Garden Club has been helping their vegetables and their students continue to grow.</p>
<p>The club just got started on this year's garden, but already hopes are high.</p>
<p>“There is going to be so many veggies that were are going to be able to produce that we are going to be able to give away to students be ale to give await to staff,” said Dejongkelbosis</p>
<p>Students say they can already feel the impact it’s having on campus.</p>
<p>“Since me and my family do this at home, and I thought it was really nice you know, a way to liven up the backyard of my school,” said Cieza. </p>

<p>CINCINNATI — It's Friday in late August so that means high school football is back in Ohio.</p>
<p>Some games are continuing as scheduled, like Lakota West at Colerain, but some teams had to cancel their games due to the pandemic. </p>
<p>Fenwick and Kings high schools both will not be playing in their games since they both had positive COVID-19 cases. However, the teams they were supposed to play, Edgewood and Winton Woods, will play against each other instead.</p>
<p>Ohio's Governor Mike DeWine gave the green light to high school football teams to play earlier in August, but he did give some restrictions in order to slow the spread of COVID-19.</p>
<p>One of the changes will be that game spectators will be limited to players' parents, family members or those closest to the student-athlete. Teams are also only allowed to dress 60 players. High school marching bands will also only be allowed to perform at their home games.</p>
<p>While football starts in Ohio, Kentucky's Board of Education is supposed to meet virtually Friday with the Kentucky High School Athletic Association's Board of Control to discuss fall sports moving forward. The current plan is for Kentucky teams to start their seasons on Sept. 11.</p>

The longest regular-season win streak in Ohio lives on as the Wyoming Cowboys knocked off the Mariemont Warriors in their 55th consecutive regular-season win. The Cowboys are the first team to put up 30+ points on the Warriors this season. Mariemont came out swinging with their first drive, but ultimately settled for 3 with a 25-yard field goal from Connor Souders.C.J. Hester took that personally and scored the next two rushing touchdowns for the Cowboys. The reigning OPSWA Division IV Southwest District Player of the Year and First Team All-Ohio selection reminded us all that he’s more than capable of repeating his success. The junior powerhouse tallied 143 yards rushing in the first half in addition to his two touchdowns. Clock management proved pivotal as Wyoming marched from their own 32 in the final seconds of the half. Sophomore quarterback Quaid Hauer connected with junior wide receiver Matty Mitchell in the end zone to end the half with a touchdown. Wyoming quite literally hit the ground running coming out of the locker room as Quaid Hauer connected with DJ Gray, who took it 50 yards for the first Cowboy touchdown of the second half.Mariemont refused to go out quietly and answered with their first touchdown of the night on a 9-yard touchdown pass from sophomore QB Charlie Tully to senior wide receiver Connor Souders to round out third quarter action. Wyoming quickly quieted any Mariemont momentum, scoring just seconds into the fourth quarter with another touchdown throw to Matty Mitchell. CJ Hester added the final nail to the coffin with his third touchdown of the night. The 4-yard carry would be the final touchdown of the evening to secure a 40-9 win for the Cowboys over the Warriors. The win gives Wyoming their sixth consecutive season with an 8-0 start. A student opened fire inside a Dallas-area high school during a fight, injuring four people before he fled, authorities said Wednesday. The shooting happened at Timberview High School in Arlington, which is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. Two people were shot and two others had unspecified injuries, Arlington Assistant Police Chief Kevin Kolbye said at a news conference.Three of the four were taken to hospitals and the other person refused treatment, he said.Police were searching for the suspected shooter, whom they identified as 18-year-old Timothy George Simpkins. They said he might be driving a 2018 silver Dodge Charger with the license plate number PFY-6260.Kolbye said the shooting happened after a fight broke out.“This is not a random act of violence," he said. “This is not somebody attacking our school."Timberview serves about 1,900 students in ninth through 12th grades. The sprawling complex opened in 2004.The shooting happened just days after a shooting at a Houston charter school that injured an administrator. Texas’ deadliest school shooting occurred in May of 2018 when a then-17-year-old armed with a shotgun and a pistol opened fire at Santa Fe High School near Houston, killing 10 people, most of whom were students.___

<p>CELEBRATION, Fla. — Almost half of the people who receive CPR, 45%, received it from a bystander. That’s why kids at one Florida high school are learning it.</p>
<p>Students at Celebration High School are getting a crash course in saving lives.</p>
<p>“As soon as the video is over, I’m going to explain to them what we are doing with the dummies and how they are doing CPR and how we’re checking them,” said Rokaia Collison, a teacher leading the training. </p>
<p>A new law in Florida now requires 9th and 11th graders to learn the lifesaving technique.</p>
<p>According to the American Heart Association, Florida is the 39th state where CPR training is mandatory.</p>
<p>“Learning hands-only CPR teaches them skills outside of a high school setting and as they grow older, should they experience somebody experiencing out-of-hospital cardiac arrest, they might be able to assist them,” said Michelle Turnage with the American Heart Association. </p>
<p>Natasha Alejandro is a junior at Celebration High School. We followed her through the process of learning CPR.</p>
<p>She and her classmates got in line and when it was their turn, they stepped up to the dummies.</p>
<p>"It doesn’t seem hard, but I feel like if I was doing it to a real person, I’m not doing anything because I can’t feel the clicking,” she said. </p>
<p>It’s not a real-life experience, but now Alejandro and hundreds of other students have a little more know-how should they need it.</p>
<p>“Conditioning always conditions you for the main event, so I guess learning this beforehand does condition you to any certain event,” said Alejandro. </p>
<p>It’s a real-world skill that students like Brandon Gonzales are happy to have. He’s a funny kid, but he knows this is serious.</p>
<p>“That’s a life, got to save everyone, because everyone is equal,” he said.</p>
<p>You never know when you might be able to save a life</p>
<p>“He died on the gym floor and while we can’t say what the outcome would have been, he had absolutely no chance at survival in his situation when there’s no CPR and no AED used, then you have no chance," said Kristin Cobb Simpson.</p>
<p>She lost her nephew, Burke, in 2012 after he collapsed during a pickup basketball game. Burke had an enlarged heart and went into cardiac arrest.</p>
<p>Despite his condition, the family believes if CPR had been initiated, there’s a good chance Burke could have survived. In 2014, they lobbied the Louisiana legislature to pass the Burke Cobb Act, requiring all Louisiana high school students to learn CPR.</p>
<p>“Even that situation that Burke was in, those 20 to 25 friends could be potential lifesavers,” said Cobb Simpson. </p>
<p>The kids we spoke with in Celebration are happy about the new law in Florida.</p>
<p>“Enforcing this does give us a positive outlook when it comes to certain situations like this. Hey, I do know how to do this, hey I can be useful. Even if we called 911, it takes a while to get here,” said Alejandro. </p>
<p>While they’re waiting for professionals to arrive, kids in Celebration, and across the country will have the skills to help save a life.</p>

It’s news every parent dreads. Doctors diagnosed 15-year-old Devin Meier with cancer this summer. As childhood cancer awareness month begins, Meier's parents encourage everyone to take preventative measures, like getting an annual check-up. “It was a shock to find out that it was cancerous, obviously,” said Megan Meier, Devin’s mom.Meier was getting ready to kick off his freshman year at Elkhorn South High School, located about 20 minutes outside of Omaha, when his pediatrician found a lump in his throat. It was thyroid cancer.“He had no symptoms at all with this and just was literally going in just so he could play football for the school,” said Megan Meier, who explained that the cancer may have gone undetected if not for a physical Devin had to get before football season. “We wouldn’t have known anything otherwise.”Playing football is what Devin lives for. Two weeks after surgery, he has been cleared to get back on the field.“He does the right thing, he’s the first one in, first one out of the weight room, picking up after kids, and he leads by example,” said freshman coach Jeff Hunter.Devin’s parents are optimistic their football fanatic will tackle cancer as easily as he does the opposing team.“He’s generally a positive, tough kid and he seems like he’s staying positive and tough and I’m sure he’ll beat this as well,” said Devin’s dad, Ken Meier. The Meiers’ message: get regular checkups to catch cancer before it enters the red zone. Doctors will determine if Devin’s cancer has spread in about a month.Watch the video above for more on this story

<p>The Meiers’ message: get regular checkups to catch cancer before it enters the red zone. </p>
<p>Doctors will determine if Devin’s cancer has spread in about a month.</p>

A student died on Wednesday after being shot at a North Carolina high school, according to authorities. Authorities said the shooter is believed to be a fellow student and has been taken into custody.Winston-Salem police Chief Catrina Thompson, fighting back tears, told a news conference that Mount Tabor High School went into immediate lockdown as emergency responders, sheriff’s deputies and police officers arrived just after noon to search for the suspect, who she said was believed to be a student at the school. The student killed at Mount Tabor High School has been identified as William Chavis Raynard Miller Jr. He was taken to a hospital, where he died, Thompson said. "I haven’t cried in a while, but I've been crying since I left the hospital," said Forsyth County Sheriff Bobby Kimbrough Jr.The campus was placed on a lockdown after the shooting happened at about 12:05 p.m., and deputies with the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office confirmed all other students were safe. Agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives also responded to the incident, according to the agency’s Charlotte office.Police blocked roads to the school, which has an enrollment of more than 1,500 students, and numerous emergency vehicles were on the scene. Parents frantic for information parked their cars on the sidewalks several blocks from the school as police directed traffic away from campus. Students and parents could be seen walking toward a nearby shopping center.Christopher Johnson said his son told him that he heard the gunshots while in the school gym and students were told to hide because there was an active shooter on campus."It’s scary to know that it actually reached out and touched you this time. My son’s not a victim, but he’s part of this and he’ll probably remember this forever," said Johnson, whose son was still at the school awaiting transportation to a pickup point.

<p>MASON, Ohio — Mason City School District officials are trying to help students who have been coping with the consequences of the pandemic from their homes.</p>
<p>It's been more than a year since some students have set foot in a school, but the district started laying the groundwork for supporting the mental health of its students four years ago. At the time, several students went to administrators and asked for more resources to be devoted to their mental health.</p>
<p>Since then, the district started a program that pushed back school start times, grading practices were changed to reduce unhealthy competition and therapy dogs were brought in to comfort students. </p>
<p>That program is expanding this year. Now, a suicide prevention program will be accessible to fifth- and sixth-grade students. There is also a new Hope Squad, a peer-to-peer suicide-prevention program, available to middle schoolers in the district for the first time.</p>
<p>"Every single one of our students coming through our doors has undergone some level of trauma, and so have our staff," Mason City Schools spokeswoman Tracey Carson said. "So many of us are wanting desperately to be back to normal, and yet normal has changed. This is going to be the new normal that we're all learning to live with."</p>

An 18-year-old is dead following an apparent medical episode at Princeton High School. It happened around 8:15 p.m. Thursday at the high school's sporting facilities, Sharonville police confirm. That teen was taken to Children's Hospital's Liberty Campus, where he was later pronounced dead. The Butler County Coroner's Office confirms that the teenager — who has not been named — died at the hospital and an autopsy is scheduled for later Friday.A cause of death is unknown, but 911 callers and police described the teen's death as some sort of medical incident.According to a 911 caller, the teen suffered some sort of medical episode — which the caller likened to a seizure — during a soccer scrimmage at the turf field across from the stadium, the caller said. The school district released a short statement, which reads: "We join our Princeton Family, friends, classmates, and our community as we grieve the loss of a life taken too soon. Our school district has implemented our crisis response team with the district and local mental health professionals and counselors and they will continue to be available for an extended period of time to assist individuals touched by this tragedy. Once again, our sympathies and prayers are with the family and all those affected by recent events. Many of our families have faced significant personal challenges this year, and only by supporting each other are we empowered to rise up and carry on."WLWT is working to learn more and will update this story as details become available.
