CINCINNATI —

An 82-year-old man from Green Township is recovering after police said he was beaten and his car was stolen from his driveway.

Investigators said at least one of the suspects has been charged after a SWAT standoff on Sunday night.

According to police, the elderly man was beaten with a brick and liquor bottles and was seriously hurt.

Police were able to track a suspect and the stolen car right to a motel.

"Morgan. Let's go. Open the door," SWAT officers said on Sunday night.

Morgan Bishop, 36, was taken into custody at the Rest Inn in Clifton on Sunday night.

Hours earlier, Green Township police said he'd attacked an 82-year-old man at his home on Sidney Road and stolen his car.

The victim's neighbor, Ron Heinlein, came running at the sound of squealing tires.

"Honestly, I wish I was a minute sooner coming over," Heinlein said.

Investigators said Bishop and a woman came to the 82-year-old man's front door saying their car was stolen and they needed to use the phone and could use a ride.

That quickly changed as police said Bishop hit the elderly man in the head and stole his car keys.

They said Bishop hit the man in the face using a brick and liquor bottles.

"Bloody and injured and he had a seat on his rocking chair on his front porch and we attended him," Heinlein said.

Heinlein called 911.

Police were then on the hunt for Bishop and the woman.

Bishop showed up at the Rest Inn on Sunday night, where Cincinnati police said a woman came out of his room, but he barricaded himself inside prompting a SWAT standoff.

Neighbor Lisa Schmidt is shocked.

"What did he do to deserve that? Why would they pick his home? Maybe because it's down, as I always say, in the hole?" Schmidt said.

SWAT eventually pushed into the motel room, taking Bishop into custody.

They also towed away the 82-year-old man's SUV.

Now, neighbors pray for his recovery and justice.

"For you to force yourself into somebody's home or just to mess him up just because you want a car? I always say, get a job," Schmidt said.

Investigators said the 82-year-old victim was taken to UC Medical Center for his injuries, which are described as serious.

WLWT has attempted to get an update on his condition from the hospital, but we have not heard back.

Green Township police said the woman has not been charged at this time.

Meanwhile, Bishop faces several charges including aggravated burglary and felonious assault.

He is set to be in court next week.

GREEN TOWNSHIP, Ohio — Known for its famous fried chicken, Ron’s Roost on Race Road has a 92-year-old secret weapon in the kitchen helping to keep business thriving throughout the pandemic. Her name is Olga Larkin.

Larkin was born in 1928 and came to Cincinnati in 1952.

“I came as an immigrant,” Larkin said. “I was a server at the Hitching Post on Glenway. I met my husband there. He came in for lunch about three times a week.”

Her husband was the restaurant's eponymous Ron, who married her in 1957 and opened Ron's Roost with her in 1960. Larkin said she's been working ever since. Her eight-hour days now, she added, are mild compared to the 12-hour shifts she used to work.

“I do a lot of bookwork, I do all the ordering, I make all the schedules and check all the invoices,” Larkin said. “Then I come up here (in the kitchen) and mess around and boss people around.”

She says working is her secret to living a long life.

“For me, getting up is just absolutely necessary for my system," she said. "Besides, I have been doing this forever. If I stop, I think I would probably keel over.”

Her son, Ron Larkin Jr., says he’s amazed by how his mother can keep pushing every day.

“Most people think she’s in her late 60s, early 70s," he said. "She doesn’t look or act her age. I think it’s incredible. She lives alone. She drives. She works every day. She is one of the most independent people I have ever come across.”

These days, when Olga Larkin is not running the family empire, she’s in the kitchen learning how to use her new iPhone with employee Matthew Jacobs.

“I love working with Olga,” Jacobs said. “She makes you want to come to work and work hard every day.”

In March, when the threat of the coronavirus was newly looming, Olga and her son learned that they needed to rely on carryout orders to continue thriving.

Ron Larkin Jr. said even though he’s been concerned about his mother's age and the threat of the virus, he believes his mother Olga is “a workhorse."

"Corona is scared of her, I think," he said.

The Metropolitan Sewer District of Greater Cincinnati has been awarded a grant to demolish 35 flood-prone properties near Muddy Creek in Green Township and Cincinnati.

The $4 million grant from FEMA and the Ohio Emergency Management Agency announced Friday, plus $570,000 from MSD in local cost share, will be used to purchase those properties along Muddy Creek Road between Glenway Avenue and Westbourne Drive.

In a release Friday, MSD said property owners have volunteered to participate in the program.

The project seeks to address years of flooding along Muddy Creek, where homeowners have experienced flooding and sewer backups.

MSD said those homes were constructed in the 1950s in the former creek bed, which was enclosed in a sewer.

The grant funding, expected in early spring, MSD will begin working to acquire those properties and relocate residents to "safe and comparable housing."

After the homes are demolished, MSD will work to "restore the area as a natural floodplain or stormwater management area," a process estimated to take about two years.

MSD is also working with OEMA on a second grant request for up to five more properties on Muddy Creek Road.

GREEN TOWNSHIP, Ohio — Pregnant women on the West Side of Cincinnati have to go somewhere else for midwife services now after Seven Hills Women's Health Centers said they no longer offer those services out of their West Fork Road location.

"While this was a difficult decision, we are confident that this restructuring is the right choice for our practice," the center wrote in a statement. "Our main priority has always been and continues to be providing compassionate and high-quality care to the women in our community."

The decision by the center has been hard for some doulas.

"It was devastating,” Molly Thoms, a trained doula and childbirth educator, said. "From, I think last Friday through Sunday, there was a lot of, ‘What’s going on? Are the midwives actually leaving?'”

Thoms said some women are due in days and don't want to use an OB/GYN. The health center said, "We are actively assisting in transferring them to one of our other care centers including Anderson Township, Downtown, Mason, Batavia, or Milford."

“Mostly what I read and saw was women kind of scrambling and wondering what they’re going to do," Thoms said. "I really, really hope they land somewhere here on the West Side so that we have this option once again."

A demonstration is planned for Friday at 9 a.m. outside of the Seven Hills Women's Health Centers on West Fork Road. Thoms said she knows the demonstration won't bring midwives back; however, she hopes it shows how much the community misses them.

"Our goal," Thoms said, "is to spread awareness of the frustrations with, and really the celebration of the midwives, and how much we want them, how much we care about having that choice and that option provided to us and how devastated we are.”

GREEN TOWNSHIP, Ohio —

An 85-year-old man is dead after being struck by a car Monday in Green Township.

Officials say Dale Hines, 85, was struck by a car around 4 p.m. Monday in the 3400 block of West Fork Road, just outside of his home.

Green Township police say Hines was not in a crosswalk when he was struck.

Hines was taken to University of Cincinnati Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead Wednesday morning.

The crash remains under investigation.

Drugs, alcohol and speed are not believed to be factors, police say. Any witnesses are asked to call police.
