There is a possibility we’ll see a federal gas tax holiday this summer.

Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., announced Wednesday that House Democrats intend to pass legislation addressing high gas prices in the coming weeks.

“it's a day-to-day or week-to-week, certainly a month-to-month expense. and it's going to require a comprehensive response. That comprehensive response is in the works. And the sooner we can get it done, the better, hopefully over the next few weeks,” Jeffries said.

When asked about a possible gas tax holiday, Jeffries said, “It’s part of the discussion, and the discussion is ongoing.”

However, last month, Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said a gas tax suspension was not plausible, as there is no way to ensure gas companies will pass the savings on to customers.

Democrats will likely try to address gas prices in other forms,

Jeffries suggested Wednesday that it is possible there will be a vote on gas price legislation by the end of May before Congress takes a recess for Memorial Day. But they’ll need cooperation from Senate Republicans for that to happen.

E85 is a type of gasoline that is priced significantly lower. In some states, including Kansas and Missouri, you can get it as cheap as $2.67 a gallon.E85 is 85% ethanol while most other types of gasoline are E10 or 10% ethanol. Before rushing to the nearest E85 station, mechanics said drivers need to make sure their vehicles can take E85 gas.At a gas station near Kansas City, several drivers were filling up with the corn-based gasoline."We didn't use it for the longest time but once things really started skyrocketing, it's a no-brainer," said Derek Elliott as he filled up his Ford F-150 with E85 gas.Elliott said he switched over from regular gas about three months ago and said the savings have made a huge difference."I'm probably going to put in the ballpark of 20 some odd gallons. You can do that math," Elliott said. "That's $25, $30 every time."Sister station KMBC talked with mechanics who said the savings might not be that noticeable because E85 won't deliver the same fuel mileage as regular gas."Anything you'd save at the pump, you're going to lose driving your car," said John Schupp, of Sci-Tech Automotive. They also have a warning for drivers who believe they might save a few bucks by using E85 in a car that's not rated for it."You'll probably have a tow truck taking it to the shop because, after about two tanks of E85, a car that's not equipped for it probably won't run," Schupp said.A yellow gas cap is a way to tell if your vehicle can take E85 to prevent a mechanic's bill. The ethanol Renewable Fuel Association said it is seeing interest explode not only in people filling up with the type of fuel but from stations that will offer it."Let's be honest, everybody is looking for another option at the pump and if they have the right vehicle, this fuel provides all the incentive that they need," said Robert White, VP of industry relations for the association. He said while ethanol does get lower fuel economy, the price difference is so large right now in many parts of the country it will still save most drivers money in the long run."If you translate down and calculate down to the dollars per mile E85 will be way ahead of gasoline today," White said.He also said there's a rising interest nationwide in the fuel and in some parts of the country ethanol will double or triple in growth this year alone."We're seeing drastic increases not only in the consumption of E85 at these E85 stations, but also in the interest of retailers wanting to offer the product," White said.Back at the gas pump near Kansas City, Elliott said he hasn't noticed a big change in his fuel economy but he does see a big change in his bank account with using E85."A lot of people have asked me about it because we use it: What does it do to gas mileage?" he said "I just know what it does for me. When I finish fueling up, there's a massive difference."

FRANKLIN, Tenn — Gas prices continue to rise and it's having an impact on those who use their car to help those in need.

The Mid-Cumberland Meals-on-Wheels in Tennessee is experiencing this firsthand. Staff say they already had a volunteer quit because of the rising costs.

Around 10 a.m., volunteers start trickling in to grab the food orders for their routes in Franklin.

Many volunteers like Gail Stark help serve over 300,000 meals annually from 17 meal sites in the region.

"I retired probably 12 years ago, and I thought 'you know I really need to do something to help other people, I feel so blessed with what I have been, how can I give back?' and so I signed up."

Starck has been helping for two years now and calls it one of the most rewarding things that she has ever done in her life.

She helps serve more than 11 million meals to seniors in Middle Tennessee.

Staff say not only is it important these seniors get a nutritious meal but meet people as well.

"It’s very important to our clients here in the area to get a meal because sometimes it is the only interaction that they have with a volunteer or with someone throughout the day," said site manager, Lindsey Burbank.

But with the gas prices climbing, it's driving away the help this organization says it desperately needs.

"I’ve recently just lost a volunteer that can’t deliver right now. She said she’s going to come back as soon as the gas prices go down," Burbank said. "All of our counties especially the ones that go out and the rural areas really do have a hard time when you’re delivering meals miles apart from each other. It’s the first thing that goes, it’s not in their budget."

Mid-Cumberland Meals-on-Wheels is hoping the prices at pump don't continue to turn good help away.

"Gas prices haven't really affected me, I come from Thompson station. So it probably is only a gallon of gas that I use. I know out in some of the rural areas, you know, the folks have to drive a little bit further and use a little bit more but even if gas went up to $20 a gallon, I would still do this because that's how rewarding it is to me," said Starck.

The staff is hopeful they can find more volunteers like Starck.

This story was first reported by Kelsey Gibbs at WTVF in Nashville, Tenn.

RV experts say a growing industry trend is having an RV delivered to an RV site for a vacationing family to use.Gray, the RV Share CEO, said 20% of his rentals involve the RV's owner driving the vehicle to a campground or destination and leaving it there for the renters. That way travelers can drive their own fuel-efficient vehicle to the RV's location. Then they can enjoy the benefits of vacationing in an RV — which can feel like having a hotel room whose door opens to some of the country's most beautiful places, like national parks — without ever having to fuel up the vehicle to drive it long distances. RV Share started offering the service early in the pandemic.

CINCINNATI — When it comes to gas prices, this unusual week turned even more unusual on Thursday, when many Cincinnati-area gas stations raised prices for the second time in just a few days.

Many stations that spiked to $3.59 a gallon on Tuesday jumped again to $3.69 or $3.79.

AAA has just announced that the average Ohio price is now $3.62, though that is lower than the national average of $3.78.

You can see the cheapest current prices on the WCPO Gas Price Map (zoom in on your area).

It is all due to the soaring price of crude oil, which hit $110 a barrel this week, based on Russia fears and the war in Ukraine.

So with oil prices now double where they were a year ago, the US Energy Department has announced that it is releasing another 30 millions of barrels of oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserves.

But will it really have any impact?

What could happen next

There's a growing worry that $3.79 a gallon may not be the end, and that gas prices could rise well past $4 on average in the coming weeks.

The idea behind a release from the reserves is to slow any upcoming price hikes.

But a PBS analysis says the impact will be small, and brief, based on history.

Back in November, the government released 50 million barrels from the reserves, when prices were just at $3.19.

PBS says it stopped the rise temporarily, but had only a "fleeting impact" for a couple of weeks.

This time, it's a smaller amount, and represents just one day's worth of US gasoline use.

So while the release may lessen the spike in gas prices the coming days, no one expects it to be a long term solution.

As always, don't waste your money.
______________________

Prices at the pump continue to skyrocket and break records in some cities across the country. Experts say several factors are to blame, including the rising tensions in Russia and Ukraine.

“I think these prices are ridiculous,” said Joel Gordillo while getting gas Tuesday, paying more than $5 a gallon for premium gas. “I mean, look at this, this is too much.”

According to the American Automobile Association (AAA), the national average for a gallon of gas was $3.53 on Tuesday.

At a gas station in San Diego, a gallon of regular was $4.99 Tuesday; all other options were more than $5.

“I’m just waiting for them to drop down, hopefully soon; the struggle is real, you know, a lot of people can’t pay these gas prices right now,” said Ernesto Tapia, who was gassing up his car.

Unfortunately, some experts don’t think the prices will be going down any time soon.

“February of last year, oil was at about $61 a barrel,” said Marie Montgomery, a spokesperson for AAA of Southern California. She said that number was $96 a barrel on Tuesday. She said since Friday, wholesale gas prices in Southern California have spiked.

Montgomery said three major factors have contributed to the increase in gas prices, one of the most significant- rising tensions between Ukraine and Russia.

“For California specifically, we don’t get any oil or gasoline from Russia, but of course, the tensions are rising oil prices worldwide, and we have to pay those oil prices, so that’s the main issue we’re seeing,” said Montgomery.

Russia is one of the world’s leading oil producers, and if leaders choose to withhold that oil, we’ll likely continue to feel it at the pump.

Montgomery says other reasons we’re seeing high prices are inflation on a national and state level and the state’s early switch to a summer blend of gasoline, which is more expensive to produce than the winter blend.

For now, there appears to be no end in sight, but Montgomery said there are things to consider when trying to save money at the pump.

“It’s more important now than ever to aggressively shop around for the cheapest prices. You can still find many stations out there that are competitive, not great prices, but well below the average,” said Montgomery.

Montgomery said the AAA mobile app will show users the lowest gas prices nearby. “Virtually shop around; make sure you’re not paying that average price,” she said.

On Wednesday California gas prices hit a record high of at least $4.72 a gallon, on average according to AAA's gas prices map.

As CNN Business reported, multiple factors, including a switch to renewable fuel sources, could see gas prices rising nationally. According to AAA, the U.S. national average for regular-grade gasoline was at $3.51. The previous highest recorded average price for regular unleaded was $4.11.

While the Ukraine crisis presents the U.S. with a foreign policy threat, it's also pushing gasoline prices higher at home. And that's a growing political problem for President Joe Biden and fellow Democrats.

With this year's congressional elections in sight, inflation has become an albatross for the party, as the Associated Press reports. Biden wants to put the focus on how much the Russian threat on the Ukraine border is contributing to the gas price rise. That message may be lost on Americans who just see how much fuel is costing at the pump. Republicans are happy to put the blame on the Democrats.

But, gas prices could take a while before they go down, experts warn.

Last year, the White House urged OPEC oil producers to try and find a way to combat rising gasoline prices, Bloomberg reported. There was a push back on increasing supply. Biden announced the release of 50 million barrels of crude oil from stockpiles controlled by the government in Texas and Louisiana salt caverns.

The council is responsible for monitoring the government's approach to increasing competition in the private sector and reducing the trend of corporate consolidation. Biden believes that will drive down prices for Americans.

The administration is trying to combat inflation. The consumer price index rose 7% in 2021, the largest 12-month gain since June 1982, according to Labor Department.

The council is made up of high-level officials from the Biden administration including Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra.

Summer 2021 will undoubtedly look much different than the summer of lockdown in 2020. With mask mandates slowly lifting and vaccination rates on the rise, AAA expects roads in Ohio to be much busier this weekend.

A survey released by AAA Monday morning says over 1.4 million Ohioans plan to travel for Memorial Day weekend, which is about 86% of the people who traveled pre-pandemic.

The poll shows Ohioans have pent-up restlessness after the pandemic forced everyone to sit out for a year. AAA calls it "revenge travel.”

The poll shows 61% of Ohioans who responded plan on taking a trip, and 33% are thinking of taking just a quick get-away. But 18% of respondents are planning on a longer, more extravagant trip.

While people have all this energy for travel, gas prices could be the one roadblock.

According to Gas Buddy, gas prices this Memorial Day weekend will be the highest they've been since 2014, about $2.98 per gallon. That’s up about a dollar from last year's rate.

Most of that increase is due to the Colonial Pipeline Shutdown. The good news is that it should ease up soon, but Gas Buddy predicts demand may drive prices back up this summer.

SAVING TIPS. REPORTER: WITH MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND FAST APPROACHING MORE PEOPLE ARE PLANNING THEIR START TO THE SUMMER ROAD TRI ACCORDING TO SURVEYS BY AAA . >> ABOUT 93% OF PEOPLE ARE PLANNING ON TAKING A ROAD TRIP THIS YEAR. REPORTER: WITH GAS PRICES HOVERING AROUND $3 A GALLON THE BANG FOR YOUR BUCK. FIRST, STICK TO THE SPEED LIMITS. IT’S NOT JUST THE LAW, THOUGH THAT’S OBVIOUSLY THE MOST IMPORTANT THING. CONSUMER REPORTS FOUND MOST CARS SAVED NEARLY 7 MILES PER GALLON DRIVING 65 AND AAA SAYS SHOP AROUND USING >> A LOT OF TIMES WHERE WE SAY THE AVERAGE PRICE IS $2.94 GALLON, THAT’S A RANG SO SOMETIMES YOU CAN SAVE $.10 A GALLON, OR FIVE CENTS A GALLON, DEPENDING ON WHERE YOU GO. REPORTER: ALSO, THINK AERODYNAMICS. WHILE IT’S EASIER TO LEAVE TH ROOF RACKS ALL YEAR LONG, EXPERTS SAY AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS MORE THAN 50% OF ENGINE POWER GOES TO OVERCOMING DRAG. SO, THE SKI RACK ON YOUR ROOF, PROBABLY NOT A SUMMER NECESSITY. FINALLY, TIRE PRESSURE MATTERS. MOST TIRES LOSE ABOUT ONE PSI A MONTH. LOWER PRESSURE CAN >> UNDERINFLATED TIRES CAN REDUCE FUEL ECONOMY BY 3% SO CHECK YOUR DOOR CAR, THE STICKER ON YOUR DOOR THAT TELLS YOU WHAT YOUR TIRE PRESSURE SHOULD BE. REPORTER: ANOTHER GAS SAVING TIP, TURN OFF THAT THAT AIR CONDITIONING AND GO OPEN WINDOWS INSTEAD. THE HA

The average U.S. price of regular-grade gasoline jumped 8 cents over the past two weeks, to $3.10 per gallon. Industry analyst Trilby Lundberg of the Lundberg Survey said Sunday that the increase is attributed to supply disruption from the 10-day shutdown of the Colonial Pipeline following a cyberattack, and a rise in prices for corn, a key ingredient in corn-based ethanol that must be blended by refiners into gasoline. The price at the pump is $1.05 higher than it was a year ago. The highest average price in the nation right now is $4.23 a gallon in the San Francisco Bay Area. The lowest average is $2.53 in Houston. The average price of diesel is up 6 cents over the same period, to $3.22. Colonial, which supplies about 45% of the fuel consumed on the East Coast, said that after it learned of the May 7 ransomware attack, it took its pipeline system offline in order to restart operations quickly and safely. The shutdown led to panic buying of gasoline in many communities.
