					Unionized Hollywood actors on the verge of a strike have agreed to allow a last-minute intervention from federal mediators but say they doubt a deal will be reached by a negotiation deadline late Wednesday."We are committed to the negotiating process and will explore and exhaust every possible opportunity to make a deal, however we are not confident that the employers have any intention of bargaining toward an agreement," the Screen Actors Guild -American Federation of Radio and Television Artists said in a statement Tuesday night.Video above: A Writers Guild of America member weighs in on the possibility of an actor's strikeThe actors could join the already striking Writers Guild of America and grind the already slowed production process to a halt if no agreement is reached with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers. The sides agreed to an extension before the original contract expiration date on June 30, resetting it to Wednesday at 11:59 p.m.Growing pessimism surrounding the talks seemed to turn to open hostility when SAG-AFTRA released a statement Tuesday night.It came in response to a report in Variety that a group of Hollywood CEOs had been the force behind the request for mediation, which the union said was leaked before its negotiators were informed of the request.The AMPTP declined comment through a representative. It's not clear whether federal mediators have agreed to take part, but such an intervention would presumably require more time than the hours left on the contract."The AMPTP has abused our trust and damaged the respect we have for them in this process," the SAG-AFTRA statement said. "We will not be manipulated by this cynical ploy to engineer an extension when the companies have had more than enough time to make a fair deal."Issues on the table in the talks include residual pay and the threat of unregulated use of artificial intelligence.

<p>
					Last year was a dress rehearsal for the future of movie theaters. This year will show if movies theaters are back for real.After a terrible 2020 that ravaged the movie theater industry, cineplexes turned on their projectors in 2021 for big hits like "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings," "Venom: Let There Be Carnage" and "Spider-Man: No Way Home" — one of the biggest blockbusters of all time.Other films like "Black Widow" and Warner Bros' entire slate of movies went with a hybrid approach, releasing films in theaters and at home via streaming simultaneously.Overall, the North American box office snagged $4.5 billion in 2021, a 101% increase over 2020, but a nearly 60% drop from 2019, according to Comscore.But the fact that theaters were able to show any films at all should be considered a victory given that in 2020 some were predicting the end of movie-going as we know it."Recovery has no straight-line""Recovery has no straight-line progression in this instance, especially with Covid variants and vaccine hesitation prolonging the health crisis," Shawn Robbins, chief analyst at Boxoffice.com, told CNN Business.He added that 2022 could be a better year given "a stronger movie release slate, pandemic fatigue in general, and fewer films expected to be siphoned off to streaming immediately upon release."Ultimately, though, the fate of this year's box office will depend on what theaters can offer moviegoers. And luckily for them, there are plenty of big films on the 2022 docket.Marvel Studios — the biggest blockbuster brand in Hollywood — has "Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness," "Thor: Love and Thunder" and "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever." Horror — one of Hollywood's most reliable genres — returns with big names like Jordan Peele's "Nope" and "Halloween Ends," the next installment in the Michael Myers franchise.Action films will get a double dose of Tom Cruise with "Top Gun: Maverick" and "Mission: Impossible 7." Audiences will again return to Jurassic Park with "Jurassic World: Dominion" and the Justice League will try to save the world multiple times with "The Batman," "Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom" and "The Flash."There also will be potential animated hits this year with Pixar's "Lightyear," "Minions: The Rise of Gru" and "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse — Part One."Oh yes, James Cameron's "Avatar 2" — the sequel to the biggest blockbuster of all time — is also set for theaters this year."On the release schedule for 2022 is an incredible array of potential hits, but there's still a lot of uncertainty," Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Comscore, told CNN Business. "And studios are once again faced with making the big decisions on not only when, but also how to release their film."To stream or not to streamAll of these films are currently set to be released in theaters, but it may not stay that way. Streaming has given studios the opportunity to decide whether to boost ticket sales by releasing films theatrically or try to boost subscribers by sending films to streaming services.Disney — Hollywood's most significant studio — has already made its choice for one of its 2022 films by pushing the next Pixar movie, "Turning Red," directly to Disney+.But after roughly two years of premiering big films at home, do consumers want to stream blockbusters from home? Will we see more of it in 2022?"The ebb and flow of the popularity of streaming is mainly determined by the ups and downs of the pandemic," Dergarabedian said. "That has created not only a conundrum for studios, but also for consumers who are torn between their desire to see blockbuster films on the big screen at their local multiplex or from the comfort of the couch at home."Robbins maintains that while an increasing number of star-driven films with high production value are being released by streamers, "very few of them have tapped into the cultural zeitgeist in the way major theatrical releases with strong word of mouth still do.""Although certain viewing habits are changing and evolving, I believe at the end of the day the right content at the right time clearly separates the experiential quality of watching something on TV or on a mobile device from that of a state-of-the-art theatrical setting with a live audience," he added.Robbins continued, "A myriad of factors determine what audiences want and where they want it from. Theatrical and streaming can coexist."The $40 billion questionIn 2019, the global box office topped $40 billion thanks to hits like "Avengers: Endgame," "Joker" and "Spider-Man: Far From Home."That number was wiped out in 2020, and 2021 will likely reach only half of that. Which begs the question: Given the lingering pandemic, will theaters ever get back to those box office heights?"Absolutely possible," says Robbins. But the question for him is when."I don't think anyone can confidently answer that yet until the pandemic has a less dominant presence in global news headlines and a diminished impact on everyday lives," he said. "Until then, the overall consumer base will continue to be abnormally divided between those going back, those wanting to go back, and those who won't go back nearly as often as they used to."The 2022 box office has its first test this weekend with "Scream," the fifth installment in the horror franchise. The film, which brings back original stars like Neve Campbell and Courtney Cox, is projected for roughly a $25 million domestic opening.

					Peter Bogdanovich, the ascot-wearing cinephile and director of 1970s black-and-white classics like “The Last Picture Show” and “Paper Moon,” has died. He was 82.Bogdanovich died early Thursday morning at this home in Los Angeles, said his daughter, Antonia Bogdanovich. She said he died of natural causes Considered part of a generation of young “New Hollywood” directors, Bogdanovich was heralded as an auteur from the start, with the chilling lone shooter film “Targets” and soon after “The Last Picture Show,” from 1971, his evocative portrait of a small, dying town that earned eight Oscar nominations, won two (for Ben Johnson and Cloris Leachman) and catapulted him to stardom at the age of 32. He followed “The Last Picture Show” with the screwball comedy “What’s Up, Doc?,” starring Barbra Streisand and Ryan O'Neal, and then the Depression-era road trip film “Paper Moon,” which won 10-year-old Tatum O’Neal an Oscar as well.His turbulent personal life was also often in the spotlight, from his well-known affair with Cybill Shepherd that began during the making of “The Last Picture Show” while he was married to his close collaborator, Polly Platt, to the murder of his Playmate girlfriend Dorothy Stratten and his subsequent marriage to her younger sister, Louise, who was 29 years younger than him.Reactions came in swiftly at the news of his death.“Oh dear, a shock. I am devastated. He was a wonderful and great artist,” said Francis Ford Coppola in an email. "I’ll never forget attending a premiere for ‘The Last Picture Show.’ I remember at its end, the audience leaped up all around me bursting into applause lasting easily 15 minutes. I’ll never forget although I felt I had never myself experienced a reaction like that, that Peter and his film deserved it. May he sleep in bliss for eternity, enjoying the thrill of our applause forever.”Tatum O’Neal posted a photo of herself with him on Instagram, writing “Peter was my heaven &amp; earth. A father figure. A friend. From ‘Paper Moon’ to ‘Nickelodeon’ he always made me feel safe. I love you, Peter.”Guillermo del Toro tweeted: “He was a dear friend and a champion of Cinema. He birthed masterpieces as a director and was a most genial human. He single-handedly interviewed and enshrined the lives and work of more classic filmmakers than almost anyone else in his generation.”Born in Kingston, New York, in 1939, Bogdanovich started out as a film journalist and critic, working as a film programmer at the Museum of Modern Art, where through a series of retrospectives he endeared himself to a host of old guard filmmakers including Orson Welles, Howard Hawks and John Ford.“I’ve gotten some very important one-sentence clues like when Howard Hawks turned to me and said ‘Always cut on the movement and no one will notice the cut,’” he said in an interview with The Associated Press. “It was a very simple sentence but it profoundly affected everything I’ve done.”But his Hollywood education started earlier than that: His father took him at age 5 to see Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton movies at the Museum of Modern Art. He'd later make his own Keaton documentary, “The Great Buster,” which was released in 2018.Bogdanovich and Platt moved to Los Angeles in the mid-1960s, where they attended Hollywood parties and struck up friendships with Corman and Frank Marshall, then just an aspiring producer, who helped get the film “Targets” off the ground. And the professional ascent only continued for the next few films and years. But after “Paper Moon,” which Platt collaborated on after they had separated, he would never again capture the accolades of those first five years in Hollywood.Bogdanovich’s relationship with Shepherd led to the end of his marriage to Platt, with whom he shared daughters Antonia and Sashy, and a fruitful creative partnership. The 1984 film “Irreconcilable Differences” was loosely based on the scandal. He later disputed the idea that Platt, who died in 2011, was an integral part of the success of his early films.He would go on to make two other films with Shepherd, an adaptation of Henry James’s “Daisy Miller” and the musical “At Long Last Love,” neither of which were particularly well-received by critics or audiences.And he also passed on major opportunities at the height of his successes. He told Vulture he turned down “The Godfather,” “Chinatown” and “The Exorcist.”“Paramount called and said, “We just bought a new Mario Puzo book called The Godfather. We’d like you to consider directing it.” I said, “I’m not interested in the Mafia,” he said in the interview.Headlines would continue to follow Bogdanovich for things other than his movies. He began an affair with Playboy Playmate Dorothy Stratten while directing her in “They All Laughed," a romantic comedy with Audrey Hepburn and Ben Gazzara, in the spring and summer of 1980. Her husband, Paul Snider, murdered her that August. Bogdanovich, in a 1984 book titled ″The Killing of the Unicorn: Dorothy Stratten, 1960-1980,″ criticized Hugh Hefner’s Playboy empire for its alleged role in events he said ended in Stratten’s death. Then, nine years later, at 49, he married her younger sister Louise Stratten, who was just 20 at the time. They divorced in 2001, but continued living together, with her mother in Los AngelesIn an interview with the AP in 2020, Bogdanovich acknowledged that his relationships had an impact on his career.“The whole thing about my personal life got in the way of people’s understanding of the movies,” Bogdanovich said. “That’s something that has plagued me since the first couple of pictures.”Despite some flops along the way, Bogdanovich's output remained prolific in the 1980s and 1990s, including a sequel to “The Last Picture Show" called “Texasville,” the country music romantic drama “The Thing Called Love,” which was one of River Phoenix's last films, and, in 2001, “The Cat's Meow,” about a party on William Randolph Hearst's yacht starring Kirsten Dunst as Marion Davies. His last narrative film, “She's Funny that Way,” a screwball comedy starring Owen Wilson and Jennifer Aniston that he co-wrote with Louise Stratten, debuted to mixed reviews in 2014.Over the years he authored several books about movies, including “Peter Bogdanovich’s Movie of the Week,” “Who the Devil Made It: Conversations with Legendary Film Directors” and “Who the Hell’s in It: Conversations with Hollywood’s Legendary Actors.”He acted semi-frequently, too, sometimes playing himself (in “Moonlighting” and “How I Met Your Mother”) and sometimes other people, like Dr. Elliot Kupferberg on “The Sopranos," and also inspired a new generation of filmmakers, from Wes Anderson to Noah Baumbach.“They call me ‘Pop,’ and I allow it,” he told Vulture.At the time of the AP interview in 2020, coinciding with a podcast about his career with Turner Classic Movies host Ben Mankiewicz, he was hard at work on a television show inspired by Dorothy Stratten, and wasn’t optimistic about the future of cinema.“I just keep going, you know. Television is not dead yet,” he said with a laugh. “But movies may have a problem.”Yet even with his Hollywood-sized ego, Bogdanovich remained deferential to those who came before.“I don’t judge myself on the basis of my contemporaries," he told The New York Times in 1971. "I judge myself against the directors I admire — Hawks, Lubitsch, Buster Keaton, Welles, Ford, Renoir, Hitchcock. I certainly don’t think I’m anywhere near as good as they are, but I think I’m pretty good.”

					Peter Parker’s good fortune continued over the holiday weekend as Hollywood prepares to close the books on a turbulent 2021. Even with some mighty competition from new Matrix and Sing movies, and rising concerns over the omicron variant, “Spider-Man: No Way Home” stayed in the No. 1 spot and netted a few more milestones too including crossing the $1 billion mark globally.According to studio estimates Sunday, “Spider-Man” added $81.5 million over the three-day weekend, down 69% from its first weekend. The Sony and Marvel film has now grossed $467 million from North American theaters, more than doubling the domestic grosses of 2021′s previous No. 1 film, “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.”With $587.1 million from 61 overseas markets, in just 12 days of release, “Spider-Man" has grossed $1.05 billion globally. It's the first film of the pandemic to cross $1 billion and is tied with “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” for being the third-fastest film ever to do so — and this without the benefit of its release in China.Universal’s “Sing 2” came in second place with an estimated $23.8 million, while Warner Bros.' “The Matrix Resurrections” grossed $12 million to take third place.The animated musical “Sing 2” features high-profile celebrity talent including Matthew McConaughey, Scarlett Johansson, Reese Witherspoon and Bono, as well as a jukebox soundtrack full of well-known hits. Since its release Wednesday, it’s made $41 million ($1.6 million of that came from Thanksgiving weekend showings) from North America and $65 million worldwide.“We’re extraordinarily pleased,” said Jim Orr, Universal's president of domestic distribution.Orr said the stellar CinemaScore (A+) and audience scores suggest that the film will continue to perform well in the next few weeks, when many kids are still out of school for the holidays.The fourth Matrix also opened on Wednesday and has earned an estimated $22.5 million in its first five days in North America. The film, directed by Lana Wachowski and starring Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss, is currently streaming on HBO Max as well. Globally, it’s grossed $69.8 million to date.While the studio was hoping for a stronger box office, Jeff Goldstein, Warner Bros.' head of domestic distribution, said the movie achieved what they were looking for as an overall strategy including HBO Max.“The Matrix Resurrections" is the last of the 18 Warner Bros. films released in 2021 to debut both in theaters and on HBO Max simultaneously. Starting in 2022, the studio will have a 45-day exclusive theatrical window on their films.In fourth place was Disney and 20th Century’s “The King’s Man,” a prequel to the action-comedy Kingsman series starring Ralph Fiennes. It came in slightly under expectations with $6.4 million from the weekend and $10 million from its first five days. The audience skewed heavily male (65%).The Kurt Warner biopic “American Underdog” opened on Christmas Day and has made an estimated $6.2 million in its two days in release to round out the top five. Zachary Levi stars as Warner, the quarterback who went from undrafted free agent to Hall of Famer.Paul Thomas Anderson’s “Licorice Pizza” expanded nationwide on Christmas, after playing in limited release for a month, and added $2.3 million bringing its total to $3.7 million. And right behind it was the Denzel Washington-directed drama “A Journal For Jordan,” which to $2.2 million.With just a few days left in 2021, the North American box office is currently sitting at $4.3 billion and is likely to net out around $4.4 billion. Pre-pandemic, it was normal for a year's box office to surpass $11 billion.“To say was a roller-coaster year is an understatement,” said Paul Dergarabedian, the senior media analyst for Comscore, Inc. “The marketplace is still facing challenges from the pandemic, but what an amazing capper to one of the most incredible years ever at the box office."He added: “The future of the movie theater a year ago was a big question mark, and a year later it’s here to stay.”Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Comscore. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.1. “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” $81.5 million.2. “Sing 2,” $23.8 million.3. “The Matrix Resurrections,” $12 million.4. “The King’s Man,” $6.4 million.5. “American Underdog,” $6.2 million.6. “West Side Story,” $2.8 million.7. “Licorice Pizza,” $2.3 million.8. “A Journal For Jordan,” $2.2 million.9. “Encanto,” $2 million.10. “83,” $1.8 million.

<p>Peter Parker’s good fortune continued over the holiday weekend as Hollywood prepares to close the books on a turbulent 2021. Even with some mighty competition from new Matrix and Sing movies, and rising concerns over the omicron variant, “Spider-Man: No Way Home” stayed in the No. 1 spot and netted a few more milestones too including crossing the $1 billion mark globally.</p>
<p>According to studio estimates Sunday, “Spider-Man” added $81.5 million over the three-day weekend, down 69% from its first weekend. The Sony and Marvel film has now grossed $467 million from North American theaters, more than doubling the domestic grosses of 2021′s previous No. 1 film, “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.”</p>

					Discussions of workplace safety are now front and center after the fatal 'Rust' movie set shooting at Bonanza Creek Ranch.On Oct. 21, Santa Fe County deputies said Alec Baldwin, the actor and co-producer of the film, discharged a prop gun that misfired. The weapon fatally wounded cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and injured director Joel Souza. Questions also remain, like how live rounds showed up on the set. The lawyer for the film's armorer, 24-year-old Hannah Gutierrez, released a statement Friday. Jason Bowles said Gutierrez had no idea where the live rounds came from and added that the guns were locked up every night.The incident has been a big concern for many people, including Baldwin. On Saturday, Baldwin briefly spoke with reporters in Vermont, where he and his family have been laying low since the shooting."An ongoing effort to limit the use of firearms on film sets is something I’m extremely interested in," Baldwin said. The actor added safety measures are needed when it comes to guns on movie sets."We have to realize that when it does go wrong, and it’s this horrible, catastrophic thing, some new measures have to take place," Baldwin said. "Whatever other people decide is the best way to go in terms of protecting people’s safety on film sets."New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham said the state may take action to address those concerns. Her office provided the following statement to sister station KOAT: "Workplace safety in any and every industry in New Mexico is absolutely paramount. A workplace death is never acceptable and must compel an analysis of what can and should be done better. My full expectation is that the film and television industry will, at the conclusion of the investigation into this tragic incident and once all the facts are in hand, bring forward comprehensive new safety protocols to ensure this kind of incident never, ever happens again. If that sort of comprehensive new approach does not materialize, the state of New Mexico will take immediate action, throughout whatever means are available to us, to ensure the safety of all personnel on all film and television sets here in our state. This industry is important to us economically and to so many workers throughout New Mexico, and I look forward to a full accounting of how this could have possibly happened, and we will determine our next steps from there."The investigation is still ongoing and no charges have been filed. Production on the movie 'Rust' has since halted.

<p>A member of production on “The Batman” has tested positive for COVID-19 and the U.K shoot has been temporarily suspended. Multiple <a class="Link" href="https://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2020/09/09/robert-pattinson-the-batman-coronavirus">media outlets </a>are reporting the film's star, Robert Pattinson, is the person who tested positive.</p>
<p>A spokesperson for Warner Bros. said Thursday that the individual is isolating in accordance with established protocols and filming is temporarily paused. They would not release any other information about the situation or affected crew member.</p>
<p><a class="Link" href="https://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2020/09/09/robert-pattinson-the-batman-coronavirus">Vanity Fair </a>and <a class="Link" href="https://deadline.com/2020/09/batman-uk-production-halts-covid-19-1234569959/">Deadline</a> are both reporting Pattinson tested positive for coronavirus, however no other information about his situation was available.</p>
<p>Pattinson is starring in the new film from director Matt Reeves which had resumed filming just a few days ago after an almost six-month hiatus because of the coronavirus pandemic.</p>
<p>The film was originally supposed to hit theaters in June 2021 but was pushed back to October 2021 because of the production delays.</p>
<p>Before filming was stopped earlier this year because of the coronavirus pandemic, enough was shot to put together a trailer for "The Batman."<br /><iframe title="The Batman - DC FanDome Teaser" width="1220" height="686" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/NLOp_6uPccQ?feature=oembed" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe></p>

					James Bond star Daniel Craig was made an honorary officer of the United Kingdom's Royal Navy on Thursday — matching his onscreen 007 persona, who holds the rank of commander."I am delighted to welcome honorary Commander Daniel Craig to the Royal Navy," First Sea Lord Admiral Sir Tony Radakin, the head of the Royal Navy, said in a news statement. Video above: Everything you need to remember before "No Time to Die""Daniel Craig is well known for being Commander Bond for the last 15 years -- a naval officer who keeps Britain safe through missions across the globe. That's what the real Royal Navy does every day, using technology and skill the same way as Bond himself."Craig wants to use his new military status — commander is the seventh-highest rank in the Royal Navy — as a way to help U.K. military families, according to the statement.Craig is about to star as the British super-spy for the fifth time in "No Time to Die," which the U.K. military is also using to highlight some of its newest hardware.HMS Dragon, a new Type 45 air defense destroyer, appears in the movie, the Defense Ministry said. The Royal Navy's website calls the 8,000-ton, 500-foot warship one of the most advanced in the world.In a June exercise off Scotland, HMS Dragon used its weapon systems to "smash an incoming missile into a million pieces," a Royal Navy release said."I cannot believe how lucky I am to be part of this; the flames were massive!" one of the ship's officers, Sub Lieutenant Ben Craddock, said in the statement.That's the kind of action you'd expect from a James Bond movie.Other U.K. hardware, including C-17 Globemaster cargo jets like those that participated in the recent international airlift out of Kabul, Afghanistan, is also featured.But the Royal Navy said the real attention, of course, is on Craig."Our honorary officers act as ambassadors and advocates for the service, sharing their time and expertise to spread the message about what our global, modern, and ready Royal Navy is doing around the world," Radakin said.Being part of one of history's most successful box-office franchises won't hurt spreading that message either.
