ESPN analyst Dick Vitale says he has been diagnosed with vocal cord cancer.

“I’m sorry to share that I received tough news today from Dr. ( Steven) Zeitels about my throat,” Vitale wrote on Twitter. “The tests on the tissues they removed showed that I have vocal cord cancer and will need six weeks of radiation to treat it. Dr. Z tells me that it has an extremely high cure rate, and that radiation, not surgery is the best path.

“I plan to fight like hell to be ready to call games when the college hoops season tips off in the Fall. Dr. Z feels that scenario is entirely possible. I want to say that I have been so touched by the tweets, texts, notes, and prayers, and will ask all of you to continue to send positive vibes.”

Vitale, one of the most recognizable voices in U.S. sports announcing known for his bombastic style and love of the game, has previously had lengthy battles with lymphoma and melanoma.

He announced in 2021 that he had lymphoma having already had several surgeries to get rid of melanoma, before saying last year that he was finally cancer free.

However, the 84-year-old revealed that after undergoing tests in hospital, a pathology report deduced that he had vocal cord cancer, saying that he plans “on winning this battle like I did vs Melanoma & Lymphoma!”

“This time last year, I was on the ESPYS stage, asking everyone to help in the cancer fight. This terrible disease strikes so many of our loved ones, and it’s now knocked on my door three different times. More research will continue to help in this fight.”

Last year, Vitale was honored at the ESPYs as the winner of the Jimmy V Award for Perseverance – the award is named after Vitale’s longtime friend, Jim Valvano, another coach turned analyst who died of cancer.

Vitale added: “I’m grateful to my immediate family as well as my ESPN family for their incredible support, and so appreciative of the outstanding team of medical experts whose dedication has such a positive impact on so many lives.”

According to Johns Hopkins, an estimated 10,000 cases of vocal cord cancer are diagnosed in the U.S. each year.

CINCINNATI — Purcell Marian freshman wing Dee Alexander set a girls basketball program single-game record for the most points and rebounds by a freshman in a 62-56 win at Milford Friday night.

Alexander scored 27 points and had 14 rebounds during the opening night of the Ohio high school girls basketball season.

Alexander, who is ranked one of the nation's top girls basketball players in the 2025 class, received several significant scholarship offers before starting the high school season.

The previous Purcell Marian girls basketball program record for most points by a freshman was held by Stormi Terrell who had 26 points in 2014 against Cincinnati College Preparatory Academy, according to Purcell Marian girls basketball coach Jamar Mosley.

The previous program record for most rebounds by a freshman was held by Kya Dukes who had 13 rebounds in 2016 against Cincinnati Country Day.

Purcell Marian (1-0), a Division III state semifinalist this past March, scored 60 of its 62 points from freshmen Friday night. The team started five freshmen.

Freshman guard Trinity Small scored 15 points and had 10 rebounds. She played all 32 minutes Friday night.

Freshman point guard Ky'Aira Miller scored 14 points to go along with six rebounds, four steals and two assists.

"I was highly satisfied with the effort we gave, with the execution," Mosley said. "I think last year we averaged 40 points. We had 62 points in our first game against a really good team."

Purcell Marian next plays Columbus Africentric Early College Nov. 27 and Newark Nov. 28 in the Ohio Girls Basketball Report's Journey to the Tourney at Sycamore High School.

College GameDay kicked off in Clifton live from The Commons at 9 a.m. ESPN opened The Pit area for fans at 6:30 a.m. This is the first time the show's ever been in Cincinnati and UC fans brought a lot of energy Saturday morning.

Fans with the best signs will win two tickets to the game. Following GameDay, UC's homecoming parade will immediately follow.

The Bearcats' catwalk starts in Campus Green around 1 p.m. and the undefeated team will face Tulsa at 3:30 p.m. at Nippert Stadium.

READING, Ohio — Mount Notre Dame High School senior guard KK Bransford - the 2021 Ohio Ms. Basketball recipient - has chosen Notre Dame as the next stop on her journey for college.

Bransford's had also considered UCLA, according to a school news release.

Bransford, a four-star recruit, helped to lead the undefeated Cougars (28-0) to the Division I girls basketball state title in March 2021.

MND, which was ranked No. 1 nationally by Blue Star Media and No. 2 nationally by MaxPreps this past spring, has won 72 consecutive games entering the start of this season in November.

The win streak is third in Ohio High School Athletic Association girls basketball history. MND is two wins away from tying Pickerington (1991-94) for second place all-time.

Bransford, who was also part of the 2019 state championship team, averaged 21.4 points, 6.4 rebounds, 5.1 assists and 3.0 steals for the Cougars this past season.

"KK is special," MND coach Dr. Scott Rogers said this past spring. "A great player and a great person. She is more concerned about her team getting better than anything else. She is constantly working on the little things. That separates her."

Bransford had 21 points, 10 assists and eight rebounds in MND's 57-55 double overtime win over Newark in the Division I state final March 13.

"KK Bransford is an electric player,” Centerville coach Adam Priefer said in a media release this past spring. “She’s a long, active defender, a great rebounder, dynamic scorer, good passer. She can do it all.”

Bransford is ranked No. 29 nationally on the ESPN girls basketball player rankings for the 2022 class, including the nation's seventh-best guard in her class.

Bransford, who has 1,600 career points, was named the Gatorade Ohio player of the year, MaxPreps Ohio player of the year and a MaxPreps All-America first team selection as a junior.

MND is scheduled to open its season against Sheridan High School Nov. 20 at the Reynoldsburg Showcase at Reynoldsburg High School, according to MND assistant athletic director Keith Schenkel.

MND has won eighth state girls basketball championships overall - the most in OHSAA history.

Melanie Newman and Jessica Mendoza are reportedly set to become ESPN's first-ever all-women duo to call a Major League Baseball game for the sports channel.

SB Nation reported that Newman and Mendoza would reportedly call Wednesday's Los Angeles Dodgers vs. San Diego Padres game.

Newman and Mendoza are no strangers to baseball or breaking down barriers.

Newman is the Baltimore Orioles' radio play-by-play announcer, and Mendoza has been a baseball analyst for ESPN since 2007, Sports Illustrated reported.

According to Yahoo! Sports, Newman was a part of MLB's first-ever all-female broadcast back in July. Mendoza was the first female analyst to call a playoff game in 2015 and ESPN's first woman MLB analyst.

"It is important to have more people represent the game of baseball," Mendoza said in an interview with CNN.

Green Bay Packers star running back Aaron Jones has recovered a necklace that contained the ashes of his late father after it was lost during Monday night's game against the Detroit Lions.

Jones told 97.3 The Game Tuesday morning that the pendant had been recovered.

USA Today reported that the team trainer found it.

According to ESPN, Jones thinks it came off during the second quarter, on one of his four touchdowns.

Jones's father, Alvin, died earlier this year of complications from COVID-19 at the age of 56.

The loss of the personal memento came on an otherwise jubilant night for Jones - who caught three touchdowns from Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers and ran in one more en route to a 35-17 victory over the Detroit Lions.

Green Bay won its ninth straight home opener with the victory.

The Packers got thumped 38-3 by New Orleans in Week 1.

Against Detroit, the Packers looked more like the team that went 13-3 in each of coach Matt LaFleur’s first two seasons.

Rodgers went 22 of 27 for 255 yards and surpassed John Elway for 10th all-time in passing yards.

The Lions blew a 17-14 halftime lead and fell to 0-2.

For the first time since 2004, the National Hockey League will return to ESPN beginning next season.

In a press release, ESPN announced Wednesday that they and the NHL agreed on a seven-year contract that will include four Stanley Cup finals that'll air on ABC.

"This partnership of the world's top hockey league and the platforms of The Walt Disney Company is a big win for our fans and our game," NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said in the news release. "Not only will this groundbreaking, but seven-year deal also enable the NHL to benefit from the incomparable power, reach, and influence of The Walt Disney Company and ABC/ESPN, it sets a new standard in delivering our game to the most passionate and tech-savvy fans in sports in the ways they now demand and on the platforms they use."

According to the news release, the deal includes:

• ESPN and ABC broadcasting 25 regular-season games.
• Early-round playoff games.
• One conference final each year.

ESPN+ will stream more than 1,000 games per season.

Also, 75 ESPN-produced exclusive telecasts per season will be shown on ESPN+ and Hulu.

The deal also includes opening-night games, the NHL All-Star Game and Skills Challenge, and other special events.

The NHL's out-of-market streaming package (NHL.TV) is again moving to ESPN+ as part of its subscription offerings.

According to Sportsnet, ESPN would broadcast the Stanley Cup Finals series between 2022 and 2028.

According to USA Today, NBC's deal, which was signed in 2011, is set to expire at the end of the current season.

BELLEVUE, Neb. (KMTV) — BELLEVUE, Neb. (KMTV)-- A 12-year-old went viral earlier this year after video of her running at 17 miles an hour on a treadmill was shared on social media. But there's more to her story.

“I really enjoy doing it and it’s something I think I can go far in. And one of my main goals that I always say is I want to go to the 2024 Olympics,” said 12-year-old sprinter Jaiya Patillo.

Jaiya is well on her way to accomplishing that goal. The 200 and 400-meter track star is already a 9-time Junior Olympian.

Her father, Kevin Patillo, said he saw potential in her as an athlete early on.

“I was laying down sideways on my sofa at home and I would hear Jaiya running and I happened to look at her legs and her legs were not just walking, but they were striding. At that point, I knew she would be a runner,” said Kevin.

Since the age of seven, she’s succeeded in every competitive championship meet she’s ran in, advancing yearly to nationals in both USA Track and Field and the Amateur Athletic Union.

“We’re just proud. We’re just here to support her and be there to make sure she gets as far in life as she wants to go,” said Lt. Col. Sheree Patillo, Jaiya’s mother.

Jaiya has lived in the area for nearly four years, moving here from Ohio after her mother was assigned to Offutt Air Force Base.

“I was so excited to come here when my wife got orders to come here because I remember the Tom Osborne days and the University of Nebraska football. I said, 'Oh man, we are going to a sports state,'” Kevin said.

Jaiya has only improved since coming to Nebraska. She trains multiple times a week.

A video of one training session has gone viral online showing Jaiya running on a treadmill at 17 miles an hour.

“We had started sort of slow, we started at like 12 or 13, and we had planned on stopping at 15, but my coach said it looked like I was jogging so we went up to 17. And I could have went up to 18 but he wanted to stay on the safe side,” said Jaiya.

The video has been seen over 100 million times across multiple platforms, but despite her widespread success...

“The main thing that I focus on is staying humble, staying true to who I am and staying focused,” said Jaiya.

When Jaiya was 11, she hit her personal record times with 26.34 seconds in the 200-meter and 58.78 seconds in the 400-meter.

Her mother said she doesn’t just excel on the track — she succeeds in academics, too.
