When Derrick Stott was unexpectedly hospitalized, he didn't not know who would care for his service dog, Keller. Thankfully, his counselor showed up in the right place at the right time and was able to help."I texted him and I didn't get a reply. I thought that was kind of odd because he's very meticulous about things. He's just really good about letting me know what's going on," said Michelle Hargis-Zuerlein, a mental health counselor with CHI Health Mercy Council Bluffs in Nebraska.Hargis-Zuerlein says she was coming to pick up Stott, her client, for a support group session when she realized something was wrong. "I came upstairs to the inside door in the apartments and I can hear his dog, Keller, kind of crying," said Hargis-Zuerlein. When she went inside, she found Stott on the floor. He had been lying there for seven hours. "My medical bracelet had cut into my wrist... I'd been laying there so long," Stott said.Stott was taken to the hospital, where he spent two weeks recovering from a flu-related fever. During that time, Hargis-Zuerlein took in Keller and cared for her with her husband. She and the dog even made trips to the hospital when Stott started to improve."Having her there for that time, snuggling with her, to give her up was really hard," said Hargis-Zuerlein. "But I knew that Derrick loves her and she takes care of him and this is where she needed to be."Keller is back home now with Stott but got to reunite with her temporary caretaker on Thursday. Now, the relationship between the two humans is closer than ever, thanks to one very lovable dog. "You know, she's kind of my girl. And I'm not married, so she's kind of my little honey. I don't know what I'd do without her," Stott said about his dog.

The story of Eva — a Belgian shepherd who protected her owner from a mountain lion attack last month — drew attention from media outlets across the nation and prompted an outpouring of emotional and financial support from readers.Unfortunately, those who donated to help save the dog were in for a heartbreaking update this morning. Over the last several days, Eva's condition deteriorated, and yesterday she slipped into a coma."We said goodbye," owner Erin Wilson wrote on the GoFundMe page this morning announcing her passing. "We love you Eva."Wilson, 24, an avid outdoorsman, had been on a short walk with Eva in mid-May off Highway 299 in Trinity County, some 300 miles north of San Francisco when the mountain lion attacked Wilson. Responding to Wilson's call for help, Eva had turned the predator's attention on herself, and the cat locked its jaws over the 2-year-old dog's head, refusing to let go."The woman attempted to throw rocks, tug, pull, and even attempted to gouge the eyes out of the lion, to no avail," California Department of Fish and Wildlife Capt. Patrick Foy wrote in an email.Desperate to free her dog, Wilson flagged down passing motorist Sharon Houston, and using pepper spray and a piece of a PVC pipe, the two women managed to fight off the mountain lion. Wilson rushed Eva to the hospital, where the dog received care for her grave injuries, including two skull fractures, a punctured sinus cavity and severe damage to her left eye. Readers moved by Eva's story donated more than $30,000 to help with the dog's treatmentOver the last several weeks, Eva appeared to be recovering. According to a GoFundMe post on May 18, she was walking and climbing into her humans' laps, playing outside and eating soft foods. "There was pep in her step," Wilson wrote. But on June 5, the dog began having seizures and experiencing inflammation in her brain, and yesterday while being treated at UC Davis Veterinary Hospital, she slipped into a coma. If the inflammation had come down, the dog could have been operated on, Wilson wrote. But a CT scan revealed that the situation was grim, and ultimately the dog succumbed to her injuries."Goodbye my beautiful sweet girl," Wilson posted on Eva's Instagram page. "You are my world, my light, my best friend. The world is a much darker place."CDFW searched for the mountain lion for a week, but came up empty, Foy wrote in an email. It has not been seen since the attack.

<p>
For the first time in nearly 70 years, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is proposing a change in how dogs are imported into the United States.Revisiting guidelines last revised in 1956, the proposed updates introduce a new set of requirements for people looking to bring in pets from countries with a high risk for rabies. The CDC says that dog rabies was eliminated in the United States in 2007, but the virus is still endemic in over 100 countries."The proposed updates aim to protect the public's health by preventing the reintroduction of dog rabies into the United States," CDC spokesperson David Daigle said. "These updates would establish an importation system designed to reduce fraud and improve the U.S. government's ability to verify that imported dogs have met U.S. entry requirements."In the video player above: In 2021, the CDC issued a temporary suspension of dog imports from over 100 countriesAlthough rabies among humans is rare in the United States, the virus kills about 59,000 people around the world each year, most of them children bitten by dogs, according to the CDC. Exposure to infected dogs causes 99% of human rabies deaths worldwide. After entering the body – usually via the bite of an infected animal – the virus travels through the nerves to the brain, where it multiplies and causes inflammation. By the time it reaches the brain and symptoms appear, the disease is usually fatal. The CDC's proposed regulation creates additional safeguards to prevent rabies from arriving from overseas. For instance, dogs from rabies-free or "low-risk" countries would be allowed to enter with written documentation that the dog has lived in the low-risk setting for the past six months. For dogs who were vaccinated in the U.S. and are returning from countries with high rabies incidence, their owners would be required to bring them to an airport with a CDC quarantine station. They would also need to have a rabies vaccination form completed and signed by a veterinarian approved by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The proposed updates place the most restrictions on people seeking to import dogs from high-risk countries who have also been vaccinated abroad. In those situations, owners would need to have a valid rabies vaccination form completed by a licensed veterinarian and signed by an official government veterinarian of the exporting country. Once in the U.S., the dogs would have to be examined and revaccinated at a CDC-registered animal care facility. The CDC has opened the guidelines to public comment online until Sept. 8.Although the policy that the CDC hopes to update includes rules for dog and cat importation, cats are not required to have proof of rabies vaccination, and the CDC's changes don't affect cat imports.Rabies can be a particularly expensive virus to treat. According to the guidelines, the importation of an infected dog in 2019 cost state governments over $400,000 to investigate and administer post-exposure prophylaxis treatment. The updates come on the heels of the CDC's decision to extend its temporary suspension of dog imports from over 100 countries with a high rabies risk until July 31, 2024. The suspension began in 2021 after cases of imported dog rabies and a 52% uptick in falsified rabies vaccination certificates.Stretched thin due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the agency opted to suspend the arrival of dogs who had traveled to one of 113 countries considered at high risk for dog rabies, including Brazil, China and India. In addition to the more stringent vaccination verification and screening efforts, the proposed updates require that all dogs entering the U.S. be microchipped, at least 6 months old and healthy upon arrival. However, the proposed restrictions face challenges. In a statement Monday, the animal rights advocacy group Animal Wellness Action decried the agency's proposal as "draconian," saying the guidelines "will put Americans overseas at risk of losing their animals" and could "terribly complicate" US charities working with dogs abroad. In 2021, a letter signed by 57 U.S. representatives also called on the CDC to lift its suspension of canine imports from high-risk countries, describing the policy as a "one-size-fits-all approach" that "prevents thousands of dogs from … being rescued and adopted."But the CDC insists that its proposal is critical to preventing the re-emergence of rabies."We understand the important role pets play in our lives and that there are many health benefits to owning a pet," Daigle said. "However, the close relationships between dogs and people means there is a direct public health risk to people who interact with inadequately vaccinated dogs imported from countries with high risk for dog rabies."

<p>The proposed updates place the most restrictions on people seeking to import dogs from high-risk countries who have also been vaccinated abroad.</p>
<p>In those situations, owners would need to have a valid rabies vaccination form completed by a licensed veterinarian and signed by an official government veterinarian of the exporting country. Once in the U.S., the dogs would have to be examined and revaccinated at a CDC-registered animal care facility.</p>
<p>The CDC has opened the guidelines to public comment <a href="https://www.regulations.gov/" rel="nofollow">online</a> until Sept. 8.</p>
<p>Although the policy that the CDC hopes to update includes rules for dog and cat importation, cats are not required to have proof of rabies vaccination, and the CDC's changes don't affect cat imports.</p>
<p>Rabies can be a particularly expensive virus to treat. According to the <a href="https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2023/07/10/2023-14343/control-of-communicable-diseases-foreign-quarantine-importation-of-dogs-and-cats#h-9" rel="nofollow">guidelines</a>, the importation of an infected dog in 2019 cost state governments over $400,000 to investigate and administer post-exposure prophylaxis treatment.</p>
<p>The updates come on the heels of the CDC's decision to extend its temporary suspension of dog imports from over 100 countries with a high rabies risk until July 31, 2024. The <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2021/06/14/health/dogs-cdc-rabies-import/index.html#:~:text=The%20US%20Centers%20for%20Disease,in%20pets%2C%20the%20CDC%20said." rel="nofollow">suspension</a> began in 2021 after cases of imported dog rabies and a <a href="https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2023/01/27/2023-01688/notice-of-extension-of-temporary-suspension-of-dogs-entering-the-united-states-from-countries-with-a#h-8" rel="nofollow">52%</a> uptick in falsified rabies vaccination certificates.</p>
<p>Stretched thin due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the agency opted to suspend the arrival of dogs who had traveled to one of <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/importation/bringing-an-animal-into-the-united-states/high-risk.html" rel="nofollow">113</a> countries considered at high risk for dog rabies, including Brazil, China and India.</p>
<p>In addition to the more stringent vaccination verification and screening efforts, the proposed updates require that all dogs entering the U.S. be microchipped, at least 6 months old and healthy upon arrival.</p>
<p>However, the proposed restrictions face challenges.</p>
<p>In a statement Monday, the animal rights advocacy group Animal Wellness Action decried the agency's proposal as "draconian," saying the guidelines "will put Americans overseas at risk of losing their animals" and could "terribly complicate" US charities working with dogs abroad.</p>
<p>In 2021, a letter signed by 57 U.S. representatives also called on the CDC to lift its suspension of canine imports from high-risk countries, describing the policy as a "one-size-fits-all approach" that "prevents thousands of dogs from … being rescued and adopted."</p>
<p>But the CDC insists that its proposal is critical to preventing the re-emergence of rabies.</p>
<p>"We understand the important role pets play in our lives and that there are many health benefits to owning a pet," Daigle said. "However, the close relationships between dogs and people means there is a direct public health risk to people who interact with inadequately vaccinated dogs imported from countries with high risk for dog rabies." </p>

<p>“They're trained on human scent,” said Alex Molnar of the Gloucester County Sheriff's Office. “We give them a specific scent article and they're trained to track that specific human scent."</p>
<p>The boys got lost while riding their bikes in the woods outside Philadelphia.</p>
<p>After walking for about a mile, Shiloh the bloodhound picked up their scent.</p>
<p>“Come around the corner, through the creek and there's these three kids standing in the creek like Lord of the Flies, just hanging out,” Molnar said.</p>
<p>The boys’ grandmother said they won’t be allowed to ride their bikes in the woods anymore.</p>
<p>“In the car, I was like, ‘Just so you, know you are confined to the backyard and the house for the rest of the summer,’" Cherese Evans said.</p>

maybe you are. And here we go. Alistair. Why didn't you tell me I wasn't doing your name right now. Why didn't you stop? Stop. Absolutely. And then hello, We have the poodle at # five, which is the first time since 1997. That includes all varieties of the poodle standard toy and miniature. We have the german shepherd dog at number four are loyal breed, which we absolutely adore. The golden retrievers at number three. At number two is the french bulldog, which is also the most popular dog in new york city. And at number one for 31 years strong is a labrador retriever where we've lived with our dogs more in the past two years and we probably have ever and what people were finding was what worked for them in their lifestyle and the ability to get the kind of dog that they wanted because they've been such a popular breed and then felt kind of out of favor maybe because of the image or the trim and it's good to see those intelligent dogs back in the top five. Again, we had a great secret for a long time. Um, they're wonderful dogs as with any breed when it explodes like this, it can be detrimental. But I understand why people loved them. Don't expect him to go hiking with you or swimming. But if you want a dog that you can chill with and have a good time with, they're great. They are the perfect size house dog for kids, active families, seniors, stuff like that. Very food motivated, easy to train and they're just lovable

<p>A lot of people added pets to their families during the pandemic, but quite a few "pandemic puppies" lack proper socialization. If you fit in that category, you can get some relief by taking your dog to a training facility.</p>
<p>Heather Gillihan is a certified professional dog trainer with <a class="Link" href="https://zoomroom.com/">Zoom Room</a>. It's an indoor dog training gym with locations nationwide.</p>
<p>"I could train your dog really well," Gillihan said. "That's not going to do you a bit of good if you don't know how to follow up, right? So we believe that it's more important to empower the owner to train their dog."</p>
<p>Gillihan says the first step to building a bond with your pup is having some empathy for their feelings.</p>
<p>"Think about it from his point of view," Gillihan said. "So he's on the leash. He knows he can't run. Dogs, when they get nervous or afraid, they have two reactions: fight or flight. The fact that the leash is attached means his only option is to fight. So he's not an aggressive dog, but he doesn't know what's coming at him. So his point of view is 'I am stuck. I can't run. So I better sound scary because what if he's a bad dog?'"</p>
<p>If you show frustration with your dog, Gillihan says that makes the situation worse.</p>
<p>"He's already nervous and afraid, and now the person he loves most in the world is fussing at him," Gillihan said. "So it just makes that dog even more scary."</p>
<p>Gillihan says the good news is that you can retrain a dog's brain to like other animals.</p>
<p>"Let him know you have some really good food, like some barbecue, something that he has never had before, but smells amazing. Let him know you have it. But he doesn't get it until we see a dog. So as soon as he sees a dog and before he can react, you say, 'Yes!' and give him that barbecue. Think about what happens in his little brain now. 'Hey, mom, there's a dog. Can I have my barbecue? Because there's one right there.'"</p>
<p>The other common trait with pandemic puppies has been separation anxiety as people return to the office. Gillihan suggests you get a camera in your house. If your dog is panting, sniffing and soiling the house, that's separation anxiety. Otherwise, they may simply lack coping skills, and you can help with that.</p>
<p>"No big hellos or goodbyes," Gillihan said. "Make it non-eventful. You're just walking out. There are things you can do to help them, though, if you're going to be gone for a while. Such as toys, stuff about you, toys, puzzles."</p>
<p>If it is separation anxiety, Gillihan suggests you visit a dog behavior specialist with a veterinary background who can use medications to help your fur baby.</p>
<p>"What those dogs need more than anything is to be able to settle the brain so that they can be retrained," Gillihan said.</p>
<p>Gillihan says it's possible to have a well-rounded dog at any stage in their life. She notes it just may take a lot of practice and dedication through a training regimen.<br /><iframe style="width:100%; height:700px; overflow:hidden;" src="https://form.jotform.com/92934306662158" width="100” height=“700” scrolling=" no=""></iframe> </p>

Each fall, many humans descend upon their favorite bakeries and coffee shops for all things pumpkin-flavored. Some quick-thinking police officers who recently rescued a dog in Glendale, Arizona, proved that people aren't the only mammals who fancy pumpkin-infused goodies.A video posted to the Glendale Police Department Facebook page shows officers attempting to rescue a German shepherd after a passerby reported that it was stuck in a canal and was swimming back and forth. One of the officers removed his ballistic vest and gun belt and tried to swim to the dog and rescue it using a leash. The dog, however, "was skittish and did not immediately come" to the officer, according to the police department's Facebook post. That's when another officer remembered his wife packed a pumpkin muffin for his lunch and used it to successfully lure the dog back to safety. The dog was not hurt. See the rescue in the video player aboveOnce it was back on dry land, the German shepherd, whose name hasn't been released, enjoyed eating the pumpkin muffin."Gratefully, the dog was reunited with his owner who lived just down the street. This dog may only have one ear, but he definitely has an eye for painting.Van Gogh the dog is named after the artist who cut off his own ear. The dog was rescued from a dogfighting ring in North Carolina with his ear in such bad shape that it had to be amputated. But that hasn't gotten in the way of his career as an artist. To help the dog paint a version of the other Van Gogh pieces, Jaclyn Gartner, the founder of Happily Furever After Rescue in Connecticut, uses gobs of paint on a canvas, then slides it into a plastic bag coated with peanut butter. "So his painting is him licking peanut butter off and while he's licking peanut butter all the paint is smeared around and makes the design," Gartner told CNN.But when Van Gogh had a gallery show to raise money and find him a permanent home, only two people showed up. Nevertheless, sympathy and publicity made Van Gogh a doggie art star. He's sold 30 pieces averaging $40 each, but the 7-year-old, 75-pound boxer-pitbull mix still needs a home. "He would love someone who would cuddle him because he's a cuddler," Gartner said. "He's a very go-with-the-flow type of dog." For more information on Van Gogh, click here.

<p>The last 12 months were some I would rather not repeat, filled with layers of loss and heartache. I can say with certainty 2022 wasn't exactly a banner year for me and maybe it wasn't for you either. </p>
<p>In May, we said goodbye to my dad after he lost a two-year battle with ALS. For anyone who has lost a parent, you can understand the complex range of emotions that come with losing someone like that. My dad was a great guy.</p>
<p>Losses continued.</p>
<p>In August, my partner and I said goodbye to our horse, Mia.</p>
<p>I thought that was it.</p>
<p>But 2022 offered one final sad blow a few weeks back, when we had to say goodbye to our beloved dog, Cooper, a 12-year-old yellow lab with a heart of gold.</p>
<p>I write all this not in search of sympathy.</p>
<p>When we think about loss and grief, death is usually the first thing that comes to our minds. But as so many of us learned during the pandemic, there are plenty of other experiences and things in life we grieve the loss of outside of death.</p>
<p>"Grief is our natural response to loss there are so many things we lose that are not just through death of someone," said Litsa Willians, a licensed clinical social worker and co-founder of a website called <a class="Link" href="https://whatsyourgrief.com/">What’s Your Grief?</a>.</p>
<p>The website was launched in 2014, long before the pandemic, when online mental health services weren't widely available. Williams and co-founder Eleanor Haley realized most of us only really dealt with grief in traditional settings like cemeteries or funeral homes.</p>
<p>"We really didn’t do a good job as a culture of creating a space for people to know how to be present with losses," Haley said. </p>
<p>So, what are other types of losses we grieve? The loss of friendships is one—it's a loss Williams and Haley have seen more of lately.</p>
<p>"In recent years, we’ve seen friends and families divided over politics and other issues where there have been real estrangements. People are grieving that loss, but also that belief we are able to understand other people in the world," Williams said.</p>
<p>Changes in careers, job loss or retirement also can become a source of grief. </p>
<p>"People look forward to retirement, and then suddenly, they realize there is this huge loss that’s been left where their job once was. There’s a tremendous grief that comes with that," she added.</p>
<p>It’s also possible to grieve the loss of something we don’t have—a future we imagined for ourselves.</p>
<p>"If I always believed I would have children and I’m battling with infertility, I never had that life and it’s a huge loss to say goodbye to that future," Williams explained.</p>
<p>These two women are trying to give all of that grief a platform. On their website are non-traditional avenues for Americans nationwide to express their grief, like expressing grief in six words or expressing grief in a recipe. </p>
<p>The hope is to give people a space to explore mental health options outside of a traditional therapy session. </p>
<p>"People want to do things. They’re less interested in talking about their emotions; they want something to do."</p>

After a runaway dog named Moose fell through the ice of a frozen creek, his community came to his rescue.Kellie and Louis Nicolao recently dropped Moose off with their dog sitter Nicolina Converso in Maryland before taking a trip to California. "Moose seemed pretty comfortable in my house," Converso told WJLA.But soon, Moose was on the loose. "I opened the door to pick up a tree on my patio and he just went on out. And we couldn't catch him. We just couldn't," Converso said. She eventually texted Moose's owners about his escape. From across the country, they reached out to a local Facebook group for help. Moose sightings were eventually reported to a group called "Operation Fur Fugitive." "I was getting phone calls and text messages and emails and Facebook messages. It was just non-stop," Converso said. Someone eventually saw Moose on a frozen creek in the area and community members gathered to help. On top of that, his owners returned just in time and were the perfect people to get him to safety.Turns out, Luis Nicolao is a U.S. Naval Academy water polo coach and was able to jump in and get Moose out of the frigid water. "I went from this point of complete despair to, here I got a chance to save his life," Luis Nicolao said. "It was overwhelming, it was awesome and to all the people, the community, you know we teach this all the time in sports and the academy, it's community over individual. It's team over individual. And everybody came together for this one little dog and I'll be forever grateful."

Firefighters who put out the blaze at a home in Virginia recently got to reunite with a four-legged family member they were able to save from the fire.Dana Glenn and Marty Dickens told WDBJ that the firefighters are heroes for saving their dog Gracie, who means so much to them. "She's been a part of our lives for over five years. She's helped me get over the death of just about all my family," Glenn said. When Dickens and an electrician first noticed smoke coming from upstairs on May 30, everyone was able to run outside except for Gracie, even after the couple tried repeatedly to save her. As Roanoke fire crews arrived, the word got out to search and save Gracie.Lt. Chris White was the one who located Gracie and handed the 90-lb dog to another firefighter.Crews treated Gracie and transported her in an ambulance to a vet to save her life. Now that Gracie is on the mend, her family took her to meet her rescuers.Watch the video above to see their reunion."It means a lot for us to, you know, just do our jobs and have them come back and show their appreciation," White said. Glenn and Dickens also made a $1,000 donation to the Roanoke Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in honor of the firefighters.

A pitbull survived being thrown from a moving car during a high-speed wrong-way chase in Minnesota and now, as he recovers, he's being called a walking miracle.Sgt. Dan Young of the Ramsey County Sheriff's Department told WCCO the chase involved multiple car-jackings and weapons. Eventually, deputies were pursuing a stolen truck that was speeding the wrong way down an interstate. That's when they noticed "a small, white dog had been thrown from the vehicle being pursued," Young said. Deputies went back and searched for the puppy after the chase ended with a few arrests. However, the dog was nowhere to be found as evening temperatures dipped well below zero. Using drones, the deputies tried the next day again and found the pitbull wagging his tail in a snow bank."He was happy-go-lucky. We even got him up in the van and he was licking us. Very, very happy. We gave him a piece of pizza," Young said. Deputies named the dog Tahoe after the Chevrolet Tahoes they drive. Tahoe had a broken leg and some lacerations from the incident, but he's now recovering at the home of a county employee and a fundraiser created for his vet bills has collected more than $20,000.Because Tahoe was found without a collar, tags or a chip, officers are trying to find his owner or a new home. Tahoe is believed to be about one year old. "We'll do our best to get him to a nice, loving family where he can live out the rest of his days in luxury. Because he's earned it. It's a feel-good happy ending in a world where we don't get those a lot," Young said.

<p>Eventually, deputies were pursuing a stolen truck that was speeding the wrong way down an interstate.</p>
<p>That's when they noticed "a small, white dog had been thrown from the vehicle being pursued," Young said. </p>
<p>Deputies went back and searched for the puppy after the chase ended with a few arrests. However, the dog was nowhere to be found as evening temperatures dipped well below zero. </p>
<p>Using drones, the deputies tried the next day again and found the pitbull wagging his tail in a snow bank.</p>
<p>"He was happy-go-lucky. We even got him up in the van and he was licking us. Very, very happy. We gave him a piece of pizza," Young said. </p>

Nearly six months after a California family and their dog died of extreme heat exhaustion and dehydration while hiking, phone data was released on Thursday that shows a text message and several phone calls did not go through due to poor cellphone reception.John Gerrish, his wife, Ellen Chung, their 1-year-old daughter, Miju, and their dog were walking in extreme heat in a remote area close to the Merced River in the Sierra National Forest last August before they died.Jonathan Gerrish's phone showed the family took multiple photos throughout their hike from 7:44 to 10:29 a.m., according to the release. At 12:25 p.m, they took a screenshot of their location on the trail map.A single text message at 11:56 a.m. saying, "Can you help us. On savage lundy trail heading back to Hites cove trail. No water or ver (over) heating with baby" did not go through due to not having cell service in the area, the release said. Five calls were also found to have been attempted but were not successful due to the same reason. The first was at 12:09 p.m. and the last four were attempted within one minute of each other at 12:36 p.m. They were found dead on Aug. 17 just 1.6 miles from their vehicle after a family friend reported them missing. In October, the cause of death for all three family members was determined to be hyperthermia and dehydration. Temperatures ranged from 107 to 109 degrees Fahrenheit and their water container was empty, authorities said. The details found on the phone support the findings of a heat-related incident, authorities said. "The cellphone data results were the last thing both the family and detectives were waiting on. The extracted information confirms our initial findings. I am very proud of my team and our partner agencies for all the work they put in. Their dedication has allowed us to close this case and answer lingering questions the family had, bringing them a little peace," Mariposa County Sheriff Jeremy Briese said.

<p>STREATOR, Ill. — A Golden Retriever is back home safe after getting trapped in a sinkhole.</p>
<p>The dog named Macy was discovered after another dog led its owner to the hole at a park in Illinois.</p>
<p>"This dog had fell into a five-foot hole, who has been missing for about 24 hours, from what I understand.” said Fred McClellan, Chief of the Streator Fire Department.</p>
<p>Firefighters were called in.</p>
<p>They tried getting Macy out with a ladder, but the older dog could not climb it.</p>
<p>That’s when the fire chief went into the hole himself and wrapped webbing around Macy so the rescue team could pull her out.</p>
<p>The team had to maneuver around, due to the unsteady ground.</p>
<p>"If you can see me falling. It was because the ground started to break on my one foot underneath, so I stepped across the hole to grab and then it collapsed again,” said McClellan.</p>
<p>Once Macy was free, she was a bit shaken.</p>
<p>But she is in much better spirits after reuniting with her owner.</p>

<p>WASHINGTON, D.C. — The president and first lady’s puppy Commander will appear in a Puppy Bowl ad this week.</p>
<p>The Puppy Bowl airs on Super Bowl Sunday at 2 p.m. EST on Animal Planet.</p>
<p>The German Shepard will appear with first lady Jill Biden in a video about the joy having a pet.</p>
<p>The first lady’s office released the video ahead of the big game.</p>
<p>In it, Dr. Biden and Commander play fetch with a tennis ball.</p>
<p>“What’s so wonderful about having pets is that they bring us unconditional love, joy and comfort every day,” said Dr. Biden in the video. The first lady also appeared in a Puppy Bowl commercial last year, with the first family’s German shepherds Champ and Major.</p>
<p>In the video, she encouraged people to wear a mask.</p>
<p>Champ died in 2021.</p>
<p>Major now lives in Delaware after behaving aggressively at the White House.</p>
<p>Commander is only five months old.</p>
<p>He joined the first family in December 2021.</p>

<p>User "@143Tiffany" posted a pinned comment under TikTok post writing, "DD has officially been reunited with her family because of this video!!!"</p>
<p>As ViralHog reported, the dog was said to be physically alright when she was rescued, but clearly emotionally worried after the ordeal. </p>
<p>The video gained over 986,000 likes on TikTok and generated over 8,576 comments with people worried for "Deedee" and her safety. After ViralHog posted the video to YouTube it gained at least 209,334 views there which all helped to reunite the sweet dog with her owner. </p>

A pup has the blues this week after he was stood up by the family he believed would take him to his forever home.On Tuesday, the Kentucky Humane Society posted a photo of 4-year-old Hendrix looking rather doleful after the family that was supposed to come pick him up never showed. They said Hendrix got all excited and dressed up to meet his new family."All of us at the Kentucky Humane Society love Hendrix so much and we just want him to have a great life with someone who will care about him as much as we do," the team said on Facebook.According to the Kentucky Humane Society, Hendrix is house-trained, loves to give kisses, enjoys naps and likes to go on walks. He is also a professional toy destroyer. In describing Hendrix, the team called him a "big snorting goofball!"With Hendrix still looking for the perfect home, the team said he would do best in an environment with no cats (because they're too tempting to him) and where he is the only dog.And if the photo isn't enough to make you fall in love with Hendrix, the team said his attitude will: "He has the biggest heart out there and so much love to give."The team is hoping someone out there will turn Hendrix's frown upside down."We can't stand seeing our sweet boy sad. Please spread the word and help us find Hendrix his forever home!"Click here to learn more about Hendrix.

Six days after a landslide caused the first floor of this home in Seattle's Magnolia neighborhood to collapse, firefighters are working and family and friends are waiting. We got a little cry this morning after the sound of a whimper this morning, neighbors called the Seattle Fire Department because of the landslide that happened last week. It is not safe to enter the home. And so right now we're exercising extreme caution for our own crews. They cut through walls and tossed out debris and hours in Got her, they discovered Sammy safe. Family friend Remy Olivier carried the black lab down a ladder to her owner and finally, in that moment of reunion, hopeful embrace. After all this loss, I did not expect this to go so well. Color is color is cool.

<p>It’s not easy watching loved ones get old.</p>
<p>“We don’t know if she’ll be here another day, another year,” said Mary Beth Thompson. </p>
<p> Thompson's 12-year-old dog Wren is in her final days.</p>
<p>“Very sweet, and she’s funny, the way she used to chase me,” said Thompson. </p>
<p>Wren is a cancer survivor and she’s losing some mobility in her hind legs. </p>
<p>“I just feel like, oh, when did she get old? We'll love her until she doesn’t want to be here anymore,” said Thompson. </p>
<p>The family invited Lauren Smith Kennedy to help them create a special memory of Wren.</p>
<p>“End-of-life pet photography is just what it sounds like. So it’s either photographing senior animals that are at the end stages of their lives or companion animals that have a terminal illness,” said Kennedy. </p>
<p>Earlier in 2021, Lauren offered to take some end-of-life photos of an acquaintance's pet and posted the finished product online.</p>
<p>“I put it out there on my social media, on my personal pages and it just blew up and I found out that there was such a high demand for it,” said Kennedy. </p>
<p>Kennedy says people were offering to fly her all over the country for these sessions with their pets. She simply could not keep up. So she created something new.</p>
<p>“How can I just make a resource for pet owners, so it’s one central list where they can just go and look. So that’s when the Tilly project started, it’s an organization dedicated to being a network not only for end-of-life photographers but clients seeking those services to get together and find each other,”</p>
<p>Kennedy says the website currently has over 500 photographers across the country. She named the project after one of her cats that passed away.</p>
<p>“I am still on a journey with my own grief and the loss that I had and I think that this allows me to honor these connections and friendships and love. It’s definitely why I named it the Tilly project, it feels like it’s a great way of honoring her,” she said. </p>
<p>Michelle Crossley, who works for the Association for Pet Loss and Bereavement, an advocacy and resource group for those dealing with the loss of a pet, says people need to grieve properly. </p>
<p>“One of the biggest things is for individuals to be able to talk about it, that’s a healing property,” said Crossley. “Participating in chat rooms, paying some sort of tribute to their companion animal that they’ve lost, but starting from the get-go just being able to talk about it.”</p>
<p>It won’t be easy for the Thompsons to say goodbye to Wren. But when the time comes, Thompson will know.</p>
<p>“We had a talk and I looked her right in the eyes and I said you tell me when it’s time,” said Thompson.</p>
<p>Kennedy hopes that she and other photographers can be there before it’s time, to capture the love between pet and person.</p>

The Kentucky Humane Society is asking for donations to pay for an expensive surgery for a 5-month-old puppy with broken front paws. The nonprofit group based in Louisville took in the puppy named MacGregor last week from an overcrowded Kentucky shelter. According to KHS, the puppy suffered blunt force trauma to his front paws, which resulted in broken metacarpal bones in both his right and left paws."These are very unusual injuries and we do not know what may have caused them, but we are determined to help MacGregor recover from his trauma," KHS said on Facebook. In an update Monday, the nonprofit group said the puppy went to a specialist Friday, which allowed the team to determine the next steps for MacGregor. The puppy will need specialized surgery to help mend his broken bones, surgery that KHS said "requires a lot of resources."(Click here to donate)According to the nonprofit group, the surgery MacGregor will need "is more than KHS' monthly budget for offsite veterinary care.""But we believe MacGregor is worth saving. This boy handsome boy has quickly stolen all of our hearts at KHS!" the team said on Facebook. The staff at KHS said despite the pain the puppy is suffering, they said it hasn't brought down his spirits. MacGregor has the best personality and enjoys giving kisses to those he comes into contact with, the team said.KSH shared several photos of MacGregor. Those wishing to donate can do so online through Facebook or on the KHS website.
