UVALDE, Texas (AP) — Uvalde’s embattled district police chief is set to face becoming the first officer to lose his job over the slow and bungled law enforcement response to one of the deadliest classroom shootings in U.S. history.

The Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District board will decide Wednesday in a rescheduled meeting from July on Pete Arredondo’s future, three months to the day after a gunman killed 19 children and two teachers while hundreds of police officers waited in the hallway of Robb Elementary and outside the campus.

CNN reported the meeting is slated to start at 5:30 p.m. CT, first allowing comments from the public to be heard before going into a closed session to decide Arredondo's possible termination.

Arredondo, who has been on administrative leave since June, has faced heavy criticism for his handling of the May 24 tragedy.

A nearly 80-page report released in July criticized Arredondo for not taking charge of the scene and wasting "precious time" by looking for a key to a likely unlocked door.

The Department of Justice has been reviewing the law enforcement agency's response to the massacre. According to the report, it took nearly an hour after the shooting began for the gunman to be confronted.

Meanwhile, questions remain as Uvalde students are set to begin a new school year on Sept. 6.

School officials say the Robb Elementary campus will no longer be used, stating that classes for the elementary students will take place in temporary classrooms at various campuses in the town.

Thursday is a big day for students as a new school year starts for some in several local school districts.

It's exciting, but uncertain as COVID-19 protocols continue to be adjusted.

Some schools are still deciding mask and COVID-19 protocols and on Wednesday night, the Forest Hills School District made a decision that came with cheers and jeers from parents.

The meeting was full and at one point, a board member cast the incorrect vote twice.

Parents appeared to have had enough before it ever really started.

"I just felt like (Gov. Mike) DeWine lifted that and said we could take them off and I don't want to put it back on and I don't want my children to put it back on either," parent Shawna Myers said.

Parents, students, and community members all stood outside Nagel Middle School greeting school leaders with signs against masks.

Their signs were on display during a meeting of the Forest Hills School Board, where masks were the task at hand.

"I believe that students should wear masks for their protection and for the protection of others," board member Dee Dee Choice said.

"I don't understand why we would do things differently when our goal shouldn't be to experiment. Our goal should be to make sure every child has the ability to learn in person," board member Dr. Leslie Rasmussen said.

"They struggle to learn when they can't fundamentally interact with each other. So to mask them out of fear of what might happen is outrageous," board Member Elizabeth Maier said.

At the end of the night, the board decided for elementary school students, masks will be required in instructional settings, but not in hallways, restrooms or at recess.

For secondary students, masks are optional.

The big concerns appeared to surrounded quarantines and contact tracing.

Members said last year, about 400 children were out with COVID-19 cases leading to about 4,000 in quarantine who did not get sick.

Parents in masks also took part in the meeting, supporting the mask effort.

Unfortunately, we were unable to catch up with them after the meeting.

They appeared to support any mask policy, with one woman saying she did not want her children near unmasked kids.

But those who were protesting said no mask policy is the right policy.

"I don't believe it'll have any effect at controlling the spread. I think the cases will continue to rise in the cold and flu season. We'll have another failed mitigation strategy," parent Scott Nelson said.

As part of the motion the board passed, the school district will revisit mask protocols for schools on Sept. 13 basing any changes on data and the situation at the time.

The Forest Hills School District includes Anderson and Turpin high schools and Ayer, Maddux, Mercer, Sherwood, Summit and Wilson elementary schools.

It serves more than 7,300 students in Anderson Township and the Village of Newtown.

CINCINNATI — Cincinnati Public Schools will require all people entering a school or a building owned or controlled by the district wear masks for the 2021-2022 school year.

The resolution passed unanimously at Wednesday night's board meeting, according to a Tweet from board member Mike Moroski.

This decision follows the recommendations of Cincinnati Children's Hospital, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the American Academy of Pediatrics and other state and local health agencies.

MASON, Ohio —

Masks are now a big debate happening in school districts across Greater Cincinnati as the new school year quickly approaches.

Some parents in Mason, and even doctors, are pushing the district to require them.

A mother we talked with said mask-wearing is a collective effort.

She said that means everyone should be wearing masks in Mason City Schools this year.

"Everyone, K-12 in the building, should be wearing masks," parent, Joy Bennett, said.

That's the standard Bennett wants to see in Mason City Schools.

Two of her children will return to the classroom soon, but she fears COVID-19 could make it rough, especially for young students who can't get a shot.

"How do we reduce excessive and prolonged quarantines? How do we keep our kids healthy and able to attend? That's why I think that masking needs to be one of our layers," Bennett said.

The mask debate prompted 108 physicians who live in the Mason School District to pen a letter urging leaders to require masks for children and staff.

"There's a lot of things that we agree upon and that is the importance of safety for our kids. We agree that the masks help us with that and that's why we're strongly recommending that to all of our families," Mason City Schools Superintendent Jonathan Cooper said.

Cooper said they are following data and science and not requiring masks now.

"We are looking at how many cases do we have? Just like we did last year. We are looking at the transmission rates around here. How quick is it passing through our community?" Cooper said.

He also said distancing, barriers, handwashing and cleaning will continue.

On the flip side, some parents have started petitions to keep masks optional.

We found one for Forest Hills Schools.

Districts including Lakota Local Schools and Hamilton City Schools are not requiring masks, leaving it up to families.

Bennett said the schools have the power.

She wants to see them take action.

"It's really uncomfortable to have to wear something on your face, but I would just ask people to consider that we are a community," Bennett said.

Mason City School officials said more than 95 percent of its staff have been vaccinated.

The superintendent also said any changes are possible with compelling data.

School is set to start in the district next Thursday.

At a special public meeting on Wednesday at 5 p.m., Cincinnati Public School board members are also expected to discuss its policy on mask-wearing in the district.
