Robots with the ability to use lethal force will not be rolled out in San Francisco— at least for now.

Amid outcry from residents, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors voted Tuesday to pause the rollout, which they had previously approved.

“We stopped the use of killer robots in San Francisco today,” Supervisor Hillary Ronen said, according to CNN. “The public outcry helped six Supervisors fully appreciate the gravity of last week’s vote and the numerous unanswered questions about both the ethics and practical implications of allowing police to use machines to kill human beings.”

The issue was sent back to a committee for further consideration. It could be voted on in the future, according to The Associated Press.

Police wanted the robots to be equipped with explosive devices in extreme situations.

"Do we want to risk lives and the public by getting ourselves exposed to the suspect or can we send a robot in to deal with it," David Lazar, assistant chief of the San Francisco Police Department.

Supervisor Dean Preston said Tuesday the city shouldn't be providing more tools to use lethal force. He believes leaders should be looking for more ways to de-escalate situations.

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — A jury found three fired Minneapolis police officers guilty of violating George Floyd’s civil rights on Thursday.

The jury’s verdict came two days of deliberations in the federal case against Tou Thao, J. Alexander Kueng and Thomas Lane.

The former officers were charged with depriving Floyd of his right to medical care when fellow Officer Derek Chauvin pressed his knee into the 46-year-old Black man’s neck for 9 1/2 minutes. Chauvin was previously found guilty on state murder charges. He pleaded guilty in the federal civil rights case.

Kueng and Thao were also charged with failing to intervene to stop Chauvin during the May 25, 2020, videotaped killing that triggered protests worldwide and a reexamination of racism and policing.

Thao held back bystanders. Kueng and Lane helped restrain Floyd.

The all-white jury was made up of eight women and four men, according to ABC News.

The ex-officers face up to life in prison; however, CNN reports that sentencing guidelines suggest they will serve a lesser sentence.

CHICAGO (AP) — The former Chicago police officer who was convicted in the shooting death of Black teenager Laquan McDonald has been released from prison after serving less than half of his sentence.

Camile Lindsey, chief of staff for the state Department of Corrections, said in an email that Jason Van Dyke was released at 12:15 a.m. Thursday from the Taylorville Correctional Center, in central Illinois.

Van Dyke, who is white, was convicted of second-degree murder and aggravated battery in October 2018. He was sentenced to six years and nine months in prison. According to CNN, he was released early due to good behavior.

The conviction came about three years after a judge ordered the city to release video footage that showed Van Dyke firing 16 bullets into the teenager’s body.

Some people, including top elected lawmakers, have reportedly called for Van Dyke to be prosecuted at the federal level.

However, according to CNN, some members of McDonald's family are ready to move forward.

"We never asked for revenge, we asked for justice. And in the case of Jason Van Dyke we feel we got justice, because he got prosecuted for the crime that he did. He did not do the amount of time that we felt like he should have done, but he did get prosecuted," McDonald's great-uncle, Rev. Marvin Hunter, told CNN.

Rep. Cori Bush is thankful no one was hurt after learning her car was hit by gunfire.

"Any act of gun violence shakes your soul," the congresswoman from Missouri said on Twitter.

According to CNN, Bush's vehicle was hit Saturday morning in the St. Louis area.

A spokesperson for Bush said there was no evidence that the congresswoman was targeted.

This is not the first time Bush's vehicle was hit by gunfire. In 2020, her car's door handle was struck and a tire was hit by bullets. She posted pictures on social media that showed the damage.

Bush, a progressive Democrat, says she is working to "eradicate the root causes of gun violence, and keep everyone safe."

A New York police officer was killed and another was fighting for his life Friday night after responding to a domestic situation between a mother and son, authorities said.

New York Police Department Commissioner Keechant Sewell said the officer who died was 22-years-old.

"We're mourning, and we're angry," she said.

Police officials originally told The New York Times that both responding officers died, but clarified late Friday night that the surviving officer was in critical condition and undergoing surgery.

Mayor Eric Adams was visibly upset during a press conference Friday night, saying the killing was an attack on the city.

“It is our city against the killers," he said.

Police said the suspect, a 47-year-old man swung a door open and fired shots, hitting both officers. Another officer shot the suspect, whose condition was not released.

Police said they recovered a stolen gun at the scene. They also said the suspect has a lengthy criminal history.
