SPRINGDALE, Ohio — Tara McRae, the mother of a man charged with felonious assault after a shooting outside Dave & Buster's, said she believes her son was a victim in the confrontation and was responding to the aggression of other people at the barcade.

"I want my son not to be portrayed as a monster," McRae said Friday. "It's unfortunate that this happened, but he was not the instigator or the perpetrator. He was a victim."

Police have accused John Perez, 24, of becoming involved in a fight at Dave & Buster's on June 28. Court documents indicate he left the scuffle, retrieved a gun from his car and shot another participant in the back.

McRae said another group of people at Dave & Buster's started the fight by punching Perez's girlfriend. She claimed another person punched her daughter — Perez's sister — in the face, and the girl had to be treated for a concussion at Cincinnati Children's Hospital.

"I'm not letting this go about these kids. I'm not letting it go — they were children," McRae said. "Grown people fighting is something different, but these are babies. They went too far."

Perez fled the scene after the shooting, but police said an eyewitness identified him. Officers found the gun used to injure the other man in Perez’s vehicle.

“This case is ongoing and more charges on this suspect and others are forthcoming,” wrote Springdale police Chief Thomas S. Wells in a news release.

The gunshot victim was briefly hospitalized but had been released by the end of the following day.

A spokesperson with Dave & Busters said their thoughts are with those affected by Monday night's shooting.

SPRINGDALE, Ohio — In the parking lot of Dave & Busters Monday night, a fight that started inside ended with gunfire.

The man shot was released from the hospital today, according to police, but officials haven't announced any information about a suspect or who could be responsible.

Before the shots were fired, the incident started with a large fight that happened inside the business.

"I am at Dave & Busters in Springdale, there are several fights happening right now and we need the police up here in like 30 seconds," said a 911-caller to dispatch.

A 911-caller also said multiple people had been tased after a large fight broke out. Once the fight moved outside, to the parking lot, those calling 911 became more frantic, telling dispatchers someone had a gun.

"They out here shooting," said a 911-caller. "I'm gone."

A 37-year-old man was found by police nearby, suffering from a gunshot wound. He was taken to a local hospital but his injuries were considered to be non-life-threatening, according to police.

People caught up in the incident Monday night compared the shooting to recent violent incidents that have erupted this summer in other areas intended for family fun, like Kings Island.

"This young group, I've got news for you," said Maudine Walker, who was shopping in the area after the shooting had already happened. "Keep on walking, because guess what, your time is next. Life is not promised to you."

WCPO reached out to the mayor of Springdale and the Springdale Police Department, but both were unavailable to comment.

A spokesperson with Dave & Busters said their thoughts are with those affected by Monday night's shooting. They would not comment on any safety concerns during the investigation.

SPRINGDALE, Ohio —

A man was found shot in Springdale Monday night.

Police say that man was found outside of the Dave & Buster's restaurant and arcade, shortly after what police are calling a large fight at the business.

It happened around 8 p.m. at the popular arcade, restaurant and sports bar in the 11700 block of Common Drive.

According to officials with the Springdale Police Department, police were called for reports of a "large fight" at Dave & Buster's.

Police say while en route, they were "updated concerning individuals being armed with a stun gun and a firearm."

Authorities arriving on the scene say they found a 37-year-old man suffering from a gunshot wound nearby.

That man, who has not been named, was taken to Bethesda North Hospital. He is expected to survive, police said.

Authorities have not said if anyone was arrested.
