<p>
Drug overdose deaths have doubled over the past six years, soaring in recent months amid the COVID-19 pandemic and continued rise of fentanyl. The country first surpassed 100,000 annual deaths in April, and overdose deaths have persisted at staggeringly high levels since. The latest data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, published Wednesday, shows that drug overdose deaths have reached another record high.An estimated 104,288 people died of drug overdoses in the 12-month period ending September 2021. In September 2015, the annual death toll was about 52,000.The pandemic accelerated trends that were already heading in the wrong direction, and experts say that reversing course will require concentrated efforts — and it will take time, both strategically and ideologically."If and when COVID restrictions ease, you won't see a reversal in the same way you saw the acceleration because these drug distribution networks and addiction become embedded in the community. And it's not like they turn off overnight," said Katherine Keyes, an associate professor at the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health whose research focuses on psychiatric and substance use epidemiology.Early in the pandemic, Keyes was part of a research team that modeled the potential impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on drug overdoses. They found that even if the pandemic did end overnight, the effects on drug overdoses would persist for at least a year. There are ways to prevent drug overdose deaths right now, experts say.Programs like syringe exchanges and heavy distribution of naloxone, an overdose reversal drug, can make an "immediate" difference, said Dr. Nora Volkow, director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse."Harm reduction can be life saving for individuals, for example, that are not ready to receive medications or treatment but are at a very high risk of dying," she said, and there is clear data that it works. But these harm reduction strategies have faced controversy. Utilizing them to their full potential will require an ideological shift, a challenge not unlike what the U.S. has faced when it comes to COVID-19 vaccines, experts say."We have a lot to learn from social scientists. Human behavior is complicated, and addressing ideology and opposition to things is really complicated. It's not as simple as just saying, 'This is what the science shows,'" said Dr. Sarah Wakeman, medical director for the substance use disorder initiative at Mass General Hospital and an associate professor at Harvard Medical School."We're seeing that right now with harm reduction, where there's this counter narrative that is becoming very polarized."The latest federal data through September 2021 marks the sixth month in a row that provisional data has held at more than 100,000 deaths annually.Nationwide, 14,000 more people died of drug overdoses than in the previous year, a 16% increase. Overdose deaths were up in all but three states compared to a year earlier, the provisional CDC data shows. New Hampshire, Hawaii and Delaware each saw year-over-year declines. In the 12-year period ending September 2021, about two-thirds of overdose deaths nationwide involved synthetic opioids, like fentanyl, which are stronger and faster-acting.The new federal data shows that overdose deaths from methamphetamine and other psychostimulants also increased significantly, up nearly 36% from the year before. They accounted for about 30% of all overdose deaths in the latest 12-month period, up from about 25% a year earlier. The link between COVID-19 and the drug epidemic is clear — the $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief package enacted last year included millions of dollars intended to reduce the harms of drug abuse. But the pandemic may also present broader lessons to carry into the fight against drug overdoses."If we invested the sort of attention, resources and political will into addressing the overdose crisis that we have with COVID, I think we would see thousands of lives saved every year. The thing that's different with addressing the overdose crisis that is in many ways easier than thinking about COVID or HIV is that we don't need to wait for scientific breakthroughs," Wakeman said."With COVID, it's been incredibly inspiring to see how quickly we can create absolutely seismic changes when there's the acceptance that we're in a state of emergency and that people's lives matter and we have to do things quickly."Wakeman and others were encouraged to see federal support for harm reduction as one of the four key pillars outlined in the Biden Administration's plan to combat drug overdoses, which was released by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services in October. Also included were measures aimed at addressing opioid prescription practices and removing barriers to treatments, as well as recovery support.Volkow says she believes the Biden administration is committed to efforts outlined in the plan, but others are worried that there may be some backtracking amid recent controversy."When we're seeing human suffering at this level, now is not the time to moralize about drug use. Now is the time to save lives," Keyes said. "And, you know, we're in a crisis situation. We need to double down and do everything that we can to save every human life because that's how we're going to get out of this epidemic."There are signs that the conversation is starting to shift in federal policies and public discourse."We've seen a shift throughout the opioid epidemic in the way people talk about drug use and drug users as a public health issue and not a criminal justice issue," Keyes said."A lot of times it's really about seeing people close to you who have experienced these conditions, or seeing people that you identify with who've experienced these conditions, that really change people's mindsets."

<p>
Throughout August, the risk of dying from COVID-19 was 11 times higher for unvaccinated adults than for fully vaccinated adults in the United States, according to new data published by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.Unvaccinated adults faced a six times higher risk of testing positive for COVID-19 throughout the month, and in the last week of August, the risk of being hospitalized was nearly 19 times higher for unvaccinated adults than fully vaccinated adults.Related video above: FDA panel endorses booster for Johnson &amp; Johnson vaccineSome states and local jurisdictions have recently started publishing COVID-19 case, death and hospitalization rates by vaccination status on their own dashboards, and the CDC has been working with health departments to link case surveillance data with immunization information systems for their own analysis. While the CDC analysis is not fully comprehensive, the data published late Thursday is the first federal look at COVID-19 risks by vaccination status made publicly available with plans for regular updates.Case data by vaccination status is available from 14 states in all regions of the United States, as well as New York City and Seattle's King County, representing about 30% of the total U.S. population. Death data is available from all but one of those jurisdictions, and hospitalization data is from a different set of 13 states. The CDC data shows that the risk of death from COVID-19 for unvaccinated adults has dipped in recent weeks as the pace of new cases drops across the country. By the last week of August, COVID-19 death rates among unvaccinated adults were about 30% lower than they were in the first week of the month, dropping from an incidence rate of 13 deaths per 100,000 people to about 9 deaths per 100,000 people. But since April, the risk for fully vaccinated adults has never been higher than 1.2 deaths per 100,000 people.Last week, CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky noted that there are still pockets of unvaccinated people in the U.S. who are not protected against the virus."The virus isn't stupid," she said. "It's going to go there."While the risk of cases and deaths have dropped, the CDC data also shows that the rate of hospitalizations among unvaccinated adults has continued to climb, up more than 80% from the first week in August to the last.Risk ratios vary by age group. For example, the rate of COVID-19 hospitalizations among adults under the age of 50 is about 15 times higher for unvaccinated people than for fully vaccinated people. For those aged 50 to 64, the hospitalization rate is 31 times higher for unvaccinated people, and for those aged 65 and older, the hospitalization rate is 16 times higher for unvaccinated people."Getting vaccinated for COVID-19 reduces the risk of getting COVID-19 and helps protect you from severe illness even if you do get COVID-19," according to the CDC. The agency is leading studies to continue to monitor vaccine effectiveness and breakthrough cases over time.A Kaiser Family Foundation (KFF) analysis from Wednesday estimates that there were more than 90,000 preventable COVID-19 deaths among unvaccinated adults over the past three months, with more than half of them occurring in September alone. After falling to the seventh leading cause of death in July, COVID-19 surged back to the second leading cause of death in September, according to KFF. Only heart disease killed more people than COVID-19 in the U.S. in September, and COVID-19 was the top cause of death for adults age 35 to 54 in both August and September."With the rapid uptake in vaccinations in the months when vaccines first became widely available, COVID-19 deaths fell sharply," according to KFF. "However, with the more infectious COVID-19 Delta variant, insufficient vaccination rates, and local and state governments easing up social distancing restrictions, COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations, and deaths increased again."

<p>Data released from the Labor Department showed the U.S. economy lost 140,000 jobs in the month of December, and it appears women <u><a class="Link" href="https://www.bls.gov/news.release/empsit.nr0.htm">accounted</a></u> for all of the job losses.</p>
<p>For the month of December,<u><a class="Link" href="https://www.bls.gov/news.release/empsit.nr0.htm"> the data</a></u> show men overall gained 16,000 jobs, while women lost 156,000, for a total loss to the economy for that month of 140,000.</p>
<p>Not just women, minority women. The data shows Black and Hispanic women lost jobs in December, while white women gained. In December, Hispanic women have the highest unemployment rate at 9.1%, followed by Black women at 8.4%, with white women at 5.7%. The data does not break out other racial or ethnic identities in unemployment rates.</p>
<p>Overall, the unemployment rate in this country in December was 6.7%.</p>
<p>For months, analysts and economists have been pointing to the number of women leaving the workforce, for two main reasons. Women, and especially women of color, disproportionately work in some of the hardest-hit areas of the economy like retail, restaurants, education and hospitality.</p>
<p>Second, women have been more likely than men to leave a job to stay home with kids who are remote learning or whose daycare has closed.</p>
<p>"Those sectors are less likely to have flexibility, so when employers are inflexible or women can't come to work because of caregiving responsibilities — they have to exit the workforce," C. Nicole Mason, president and CEO of the Institute for Women's Policy Research, <u><a class="Link" href="https://www.cnn.com/2021/01/08/economy/women-job-losses-pandemic/index.html">told CNN</a></u>.</p>
<p>December’s Labor <u><a class="Link" href="https://www.bls.gov/news.release/empsit.nr0.htm">statistics</a></u> were a blow to the economy, after analysts had expected small gains the report showed a huge drop. This was the first time since April that U.S. employers overall cut jobs.</p>
<p>In April, 22 million jobs were cut, and according to the December jobs report, the economy still has 9.9 million fewer jobs than it did before the pandemic.</p>
<p>Of those 9.9 million jobs that have not returned since February, the Labor Department says roughly 5.4 million were held by women and 4.4 million were held by men.</p>

<p>The pandemic slammed businesses, including health care systems. On top of the stress of COVID-19, they also saw more cybersecurity attacks.</p>
<p>“Health care has always been a target, but it tremendously just blew up when the pandemic started,” said Angela Kobel, Chief Financial Officer of Lincoln Health in Hugo, Colorado.</p>
<p>She’s talking about cybersecurity. As the pandemic stressed health care systems, the industry also saw more attempted cyberattacks.</p>
<p>“A lot of our employees were working remotely as we closed the hospital down, which made us vulnerable,” Kobel said. “Everybody was so busy fighting COVID and trying to figure out what was happening with COVID that we didn't have the resources to put towards IT security.”</p>
<p>Hospitals are at a higher risk for attacks. Many of us have personal, private information shared with our doctors, often stored digitally. So for the past few years, Lincoln Health has used a third-party company to manage its IT system. That’s where Lance Goudzwaard with ReliableIT comes in.</p>
<p>“Health care organizations, they need to be very careful with that information. And I'll tell you the value of each of these records is very high. It's scary to think how much a hacker can sell one record for,” said Lance Goudzwaard, Virtual CIO at ReliableIT.</p>
<p>And hacking is getting easier.</p>
<p>“My 15-year-old daughter could go to the internet and download instructions on how to hack a lot of health care systems,” Goudzwaard said.</p>
<p>“It's incredibly easy to find and use hacking tools, and there are services you can outsource all of this too, if you want to,” cybersecurity expert Nathan Evans said.</p>
<p>It’s not just hospitals that are seeing these data breaches and ransomware attacks. Earlier this year, a cyberattack on the Colonial Pipeline caused a disruption in fuel transportation, leading to gas shortages in the southeastern U.S.</p>
<p>And JBA USA, a large meat supplier, recently announced it too was targeted by a cybersecurity attack. There are more that go unreported, as there aren’t regulations in place in most industries to report these incidents.</p>
<p>“The health care sector and financial sector have government requirements to report when they actually get breached,” said Nathan Evans, an assistant teaching professor at the University of Denver.</p>
<p>So what does all of this mean for your data, and your accounts? Evans said part of it is trust in the organization you give your information to.</p>
<p>“There's not really anything we can do on an individual basis to protect our medical information. There are HIPAA guidelines that require you to, if you're handling patient data, to encrypt it and make sure it's protected when it’s in transit or in storage,” Evans said.</p>
<p>Another safety net you can control is enabling two-factor authentication for your accounts.</p>
<p>“Two-factor authentication is combining something you know, which would be like a password, with something physical, so either your cell phone or a hardware key device,” he said. “The idea is that if an attacker gets just your password, they won't be able to log into your account because they won't have this second factor.”</p>
<p>It all boils down to education.</p>
<p>“The more we are aware of these common exploits, the better job we’re going to do at preventing them,” Goudzwaard said. </p>
<p>He said they are able to educate employees about common attacks and tools they can use to monitor themselves, especially with e-mails where many hackers can pose as co-workers, clients, or vendors.</p>
<p>“We’ve definitely become more aware,” Kobel said.</p>

<p>The Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation has published projections on just how the onslaught of COVID-19 cases are expected to impact the nation and all 50 states in the coming weeks. </p>
<p>The data, which the White House has used to help advise President Donald Trump and members of the coronavirus task force, is dubbed the "Chris Murphy Model." The Chris Murphy Model is made available through the University of Washington website. It is updated every morning based on testing from around the country.</p>
<p>Dr. Debroah Birx, a member of the White House coronavirus task force, said that the data is consistent with projetions used from 12 other sources the White House has relied on to model its COVID-19 projections. </p>
<p>"We’ve reviewed 12 different models, and then we went back to the drawing board over the last week or two, and worked from the ground up utilizing actual reporting of cases," Birx said in a White House briefing on Sunday. "It’s the way we built the HIV model, the TB model, and the malaria model. When we finished, the other group that was working in parallel which we didn’t know about, H-I-M-E and Chris Murray, ended up at the same numbers. So if you go on his website, you can see the concern that we had with the growing number of potential fatalities.” </p>
<p>As of Tuesday, the Chris Murphy Model projects that the United States would see a peak demand of ICU visits around April 11 and hospitalizations on April 15. The data also projects that the national peak of deaths per day would come around April 15. </p>
<p>Unfortunately, the data suggests that the demand in most states will far exceed the supply for ICU beds. In New York, the number of patients requiring an ICU bed will exceed the supply of such beds by 12 times, based on the projection. In Louisiana, the demand for ICU beds is expected to be three times the supply. </p>
<p>The Chris Murphy Model does offer some optimism that the United States will successfully "flatten the curve." Only a handful of states are expected to have a shortage of overall hospital beds. It also shows that numbers in most states will begin to tail off by early May, although some states, such as Virginia, could still be dealing with a number of cases well into June. </p>
<p>The model also assumes that every state will maintain social distancing guidelines through the duration of the epidemic, which offers a key variable on how the numbers could change. </p>
<p>The Chris Murphy Model does have a slightly more optimistic outlook on the number of fatalities compared to official White House figures. The Chris Murphy Model projects a death toll of nearly 84,000 COVID-19-related deaths into the summer, giving an overall projected range of nearly 36,000 to 154,000. The White House said on Tuesday that it is projecting a national death toll of 100,000 to 240,000. </p>
<p>The projection shows that as many Americans will die from COVID-19 in April compared to an entire high-end flu season, even with social distancing guidelines in place. </p>
