Authorities in Texas say a 2-year-old was attacked by a coyote on Tuesday while it was on the front porch of its Dallas home.

Police told the Associated Press that The child was hospitalized in critical condition after the attack, which happened at 8:30 a.m.

According to the news outlet, once an officer arrived at the scene, they opened fire on the animal before it retreated into the woods.

It wasn't immediately clear if the coyote was struck, but a game warden began actively searching for it.

"All those who live or visit the area should be on alert and call 911 if they locate the coyote," the department said on Twitter.

News of the attack in Dallas comes almost a week after a 2-year-old girl was attacked on a beach in Southern California.

Huntington Beach police said that the coyote was shot and killed by officers.

Boeing says it plans to move its corporate headquarters from Chicago to the Washington, D.C., area.

The company made it official on Thursday.

Boeing is a major defense contractor, so the move would put its executives in Arlington, Virginia, close to customers in the Pentagon.

It would also put them near the Federal Aviation Administration, which regulates Boeing's business of building passenger airplanes.

The relocation will also put the company close to its rivals, including Lockheed Martin and General Dynamics, which already in the D.C. area.

Boeing’s roots are in the Seattle area, and it has assembly plants in Washington state and South Carolina.

The company moved its headquarters to Chicago in 2001 after an unusually public search that also considered Dallas and Denver.

Boeing isn’t the only company to recently decide to pack its bags for the D.C. area.

In April, local officials approved Amazon’s plan to build a 350-foot-tall building in Arlington.

The building will serve as Amazon’s second headquarters.

A 24-year-old man was arrested in connection to the thefts of two emperor tamarin monkeys from the Dallas Zoo, authorities said Friday.

According to the Dallas Police Department, Davion Irvin was arrested on Thursday after being spotted near the animal exhibits at The Dallas World Aquarium.

Earlier this week, police released a picture of a man they were seeking to speak with regarding the monkey thefts. The man was seen in a blue hoodie, eating Doritos. Police confirmed the man in the picture is Irvin.

He was booked into the Dallas County jail and has been charged with six counts of animal cruelty.

The monkeys were reported missing on Monday morning. Authorities said their enclosure was cut, allowing someone to gain access to the animals. They were found a day later at an abandoned home near the zoo, police said.

The missing monkeys were the latest in a string of odd events at the zoo. The zoo reports that other enclosures have been cut recently.

A leopard escaped from its cage in January. It was found hours later on zoo grounds.

The zoo is also investigating the death of an endangered vulture. Officials called the death suspicious.

Irvin has only been charged in connection to the case of the missing monkeys. However, the Dallas Police Department said he could face more charges in the future if investigations determine he had a role in the other incidents.

ALLEN, Texas —

Multiple people were shot, some fatally, at a mall near Dallas by a gunman who authorities believe was acting alone — and who is now dead — and at least nine victims were transported to trauma facilities, officials said Saturday.

A Dallas-area medical group says it is treating victims as young as 5 years old.

Authorities in Allen, Texas, responded to the shooting at an outlet mall in the afternoon, with ATF personnel on the scene at Allen Premium Outlets.

There was a search for a second gunman, according to a source, but police now say they believe the shooter acted alone.

Allen Fire Chief Jonathan Boyd said nine victims were transported to area medical facilities, but he didn't specify the number of injured or dead because authorities don't have an accurate count. The Associated Press reported the victims were between the ages of 5 and 61.

The city of Allen tweeted: "Our hearts are with the individuals and families impacted by this tragic event."

U.S. Rep. Keith Self also told CNN's Paula Reid that there are multiple casualties but he declined to specify a number, saying he would leave that information to law enforcement.

"The shooter is dead and I am told by law enforcement that there was only one shooter, they have now confirmed that," the Republican representative said. "There are now multiple victims but I am going to leave that to law enforcement to announce. The scene is now secure but it's fluid."

Witnesses told CNN that they saw the gunman, who was dressed all in black, and was wearing tactical gear.

Police believe they have identified the vehicle of the deceased suspect, which is being examined by the bomb squad as a precaution, the source says.

Gov. Greg Abbott called it an "unspeakable tragedy," saying in a statement that "our hearts are with the people of Allen, Texas."

Jaynal Pervez told CNN affiliate KTVT that he arrived at the mall after his daughter, who was inside, called to inform him about a shooting.

"We saw the police outside the door, and they told us we had to go, and that they are still looking for the person," Pervez said. "There's no more safe places. I don't know what to do."

Police in Allen asked residents to avoid the area.

Tony Wright, a resident whose home backs up to the Allen Premium Outlets, said his family thought they heard construction before they realized it was gunshots.

Wright said he was driving away from his house at the time and didn't hear the gunshots himself, but his family called him moments later, "freaking out," and saying they heard gunfire.

Initially, however, it wasn't clear.

"Everyone thought it was hammering," he said of the noise of gunfire that sounded like construction.

But he said once they saw people fleeing the outlet mall, the family locked the doors and hunkered down.

Jerry Mills is a die-hard Bengals fan.

Ed Fernandes cheers for the Raiders.

Before Saturday, the two were strangers. Now, they share a special bond.

"I believe God put me there for a reason so that man could have another day of living," Mills said.

Mills had just wrapped up an afternoon of tailgating.

He was on his way in to Paul Brown Stadium when he saw a Raiders fan on the ground. People in the crowd thought he was having a seizure.

"I look at him and, "I'm like, 'that doesn't look like a seizure activity.' I look for a pulse, he didn't have a pulse, and I was like, 'I'm going to start CPR right now,'" Mills said.

Mills, who is from Cincinnati and a former Covington firefighter, currently works as an emergency room nurse in Dallas.

"Being a nurse for the past three years, I've always told everybody I work with, 'Look, we're not losing nobody on my shift,'" Mills said.

That's how he felt outside PBS Saturday.

"I'm sitting there telling him, 'I'm not losing you today.' And so, the other nurse was helping and two minutes later, he got a pulse," Mills said.

But then Mills said he lost it again. Mills said the other nurse who jumped in to help also acted selflessly.

"She took the guy's shirt, put it across his face and started to breathe into his mouth," Mills said.

The two nurses continued to do what they had to to keep the Raiders fan alive until Cincinnati firefighters arrived.

On Tuesday, Mills learned the name of the man he saved, Ed Fernandes of Dayton, who had planned on attending the game with his grandson, Noah.

Noah told WLWT that his grandfather is still at UC Medical Center with blockages in his heart. He is scheduled to have surgery Thursday. Fernandes' family said they can't put into words how grateful they are for Mills.

Authorities have identified a 44-year-old British national as the man who took four people hostage at a Texas synagogue for 10 hours before an FBI SWAT team stormed the building, ending a tense standoff that President Joe Biden called “an act of terror.”

The four people were taken hostage for about 10 hours at the Congregation Beth Israel synagogue in Colleyville. Services at the synagogue were being livestreamed on Facebook at the time.

The suspect had demanded the release of a Pakistani neuroscientist who was convicted of trying to kill U.S. Army officers in Afghanistan.

The first of the hostages were released at about 5 p.m. local time. That person was expected to be reunited with his family soon and did not require medical attention.

The three other hostages were released at around 9:30 p.m. local time when a SWAT team entered the building. Authorities later said that the suspect was killed.

That suspect was identified Sunday as Malik Faisal Akram

The FBI says there’s no immediate indication the man had connections to any broader plan but that the agency’s investigation “will have global reach.”

COLLEYVILLE, Texas —

Authorities say a man apparently took hostages Saturday during services at a synagogue near Fort Worth, Texas.

The Colleyville Police Department tweeted Saturday afternoon that it was conducting SWAT operations at the address of Congregation Beth Israel.

FBI Dallas spokeswoman Katie Chaumont said an FBI SWAT team was also at the scene and that crisis negotiators had been communicating with someone inside the synagogue. But she could not say whether the person was armed and she declined to describe what the person had said to authorities, citing operational sensitivity.

Police were first called to the synagogue around 11 a.m. and people were evacuated from the surrounding neighborhood soon after that, Chaumont said.

There have been no reported injuries, Chaumont said, and authorities weren't certain how many people were in the synagogue.

"It’s an evolving situation, and we have a lot of law enforcement personnel on scene," Chaumont said.

Law enforcement shut down access to the roads surrounding the synagogue Saturday afternoon.

The services were being livestreamed on the synagogue's Facebook page for a time. The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported that an angry man could be heard ranting and talking about religion at times during the livestream, which didn't show what was happening inside the synagogue.

Shortly before 2 p.m., the man said, "You got to do something. I don’t want to see this guy dead." Moments later, the feed cut out.

The man, who used profanities, repeatedly mentioned his sister, Islam and that he thought he was going to die, the Star-Telegram reported.

Colleyville, a community of about 26,000 people, is about 15 miles northeast of Fort Worth.

A 9-year-old Dallas boy has become the youngest person to die from injuries sustained during a crowd surge at the Astroworld music festival in Houston.

Ezra Blount of Dallas died Sunday at Texas Children's Hospital in Houston, family attorney Ben Crump said.

Ezra was placed in a medically induced coma after suffering serious injuries in the Nov. 5 crush of fans during a performance by the festival's headliner, rapper Travis Scott.

He is the 10th person who attended the festival to die.

"The Blount family tonight is grieving the incomprehensible loss of their precious young son," Crump said in a news release Sunday night. "This should not have been the outcome of taking their son to a concert, what should have been a joyful celebration."

Treston Blount, Ezra's father, described what happened Nov. 5 in a post on a GoFundMe page that he set up to help defray Ezra's medical expenses. He said Ezra was sitting on his shoulders when a crowd surge crushed them. The father lost consciousness and when he came to, Ezra was missing, Blount said. A frantic search ensued until Ezra was eventually found at the hospital, severely injured.

The child incurred severe damage to his brain, kidney, and liver after being "kicked, stepped on, and trampled, and nearly crushed to death," according to a lawsuit his family has filed against Scott and the event's organizer, Live Nation. The Blount family is seeking at least $1 million in damages.

The others who died ranged in age from 14 to 27. Some 300 people were treated at the festival site and 13 were hospitalized.

Houston police and fire department investigators have said they are reviewing surveillance video provided by concert promoter Live Nation, as well as dozens of clips people at the show widely shared on social media. Investigators also planned to speak with Live Nation representatives, Scott and concertgoers. Scott and the event organizers are now the focus of a criminal investigation.

DALLAS (AP) — Authorities say eight people were injured, including four firefighters, in a Dallas apartment complex explosion.

Dallas Fire-Rescue says three firefighters were injured critically, while the other has been discharged after receiving hospital treatment for minor injuries.

Four civilians also were hospitalized in stable condition.

Fire officials say the firefighters were investigating a report of a natural gas leak at the two-story complex in southern Dallas.

They had reported smelling gas just before the explosion partially collapsed the building.

The cause of the blast hasn't been determined and remains under investigation.

A mother is back home in Texas after a long battle with COVID-19 in an Oklahoma City intensive care unit.

Devisha Long credits her nurses for getting her home. But, she said, it has been a long journey.

She was flown by helicopter from Dallas to OKC. She was placed in a medically-induced coma at Integris Baptist Medical Center and was in this condition for nearly a month. She became a mother during her hospital stay.

“I surprised them. Oh, man, they were so excited,” she said. “You know, everybody was happy.”

Long survived COVID-19 thanks to the innovative extracorporeal membrane oxygenation treatment. This week, she finally returned home to her family in Dallas. Her nurses watched the tender moment while huddled around an iPhone.

“It was freaking awesome! I got chills. I cried, and I don’t cry. It was a breath of fresh air,” the nurses said.

Their former patient hugged her sweet daughters for the first time in months.

While Long was in a coma, Nurse Manager Rebecca Mitchell said she was very sick and was pregnant.

“And then they had to do an emergency C-section before she came to us,” Mitchell said.

“When I finally woke up, the only way I knew I wasn't pregnant is because one of the nurses from the other hospital had made a collage of the baby, and I seen him line up on the wall, and I looked and I was like, That's my baby,” Long said.

She eventually woke up from her coma, holding her baby girl.

“When I first held her and I was like, I can't believe, you know, this is you,” she said.

For the nurse team at Integris, they’ve been running nonstop, experiencing tragedy treating COVID-19 patients.

“It truly has been a hellacious year. I've seen more death. This just this past year than I have in the 10 years I've been a nurse,” Mitchell said.

But this brief moment offered a change from the sad realities of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We all cried. I think we all teared up, because just that those are those moments that you, you need to kind of help rebuild to remind you why we do what we do,” she said.

They remember why they continue their work.

“Thank you for your positivity, thank you for encouraging me. You really helped me to remain strong,” Long said. “Even in the dark times of me being alone, y'all really did an amazing job and I just want to tell you how to continue to do the same because you're touching lives and making a difference."

Long is still recovering from COVID-19, going to appointments in Dallas. As for her newborn, she’s at a Dallas hospital until she can come home.

A 32-year-old man was charged with intoxication manslaughter after a car he was driving allegedly struck and killed a Dallas police officer who was blocking the scene of an earlier accident on an expressway, police said.

Officer Mitchell Penton was standing outside his squad car with his emergency lights on when another vehicle hit the squad car about 1:45 a.m. Saturday. That caused the police car to strike Penton, the Dallas Police Department said in a news release.

Penton was taken to a hospital, where he later died, police said.

The driver of the car was also charged with intoxication assault in connection with injuries suffered by a passenger in his vehicle who was treated for "trauma to her chest area" and a cut on her face, the release said.

The suspect was "found to be intoxicated," according to the release. Witnesses told police he had been driving "at a high rate of speed."

The man was treated by medical staff and released, police said.

Penton had been with the department for two years and had completed his training in October, according to the release.

"Our hearts are heavy right now," Dallas Police Chief Eddie Garcia said. "This young officer had such a bright future ahead of him."

The U.S. government plans to house up to 3,000 immigrant teenagers at a convention center in downtown Dallas as it struggles to find space for a surge of migrant children at the border who have strained the immigration system just two months into the Biden administration.

American authorities encountered people crossing the border without legal status more than 100,000 times in February — a level higher than all but four months of Donald Trump's presidency. The spike in traffic poses a challenge to President Joe Biden at a fraught moment with Congress, which is about to take up immigration legislation, and has required the help of the American Red Cross.

The Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center will be used for up to 90 days beginning as early as this week, according to a memo obtained by The Associated Press that was sent Monday to members of the Dallas City Council. Federal agencies will use the facility to house boys ages 15 to 17, according to the memo, which describes the soon-to-open site as a "decompression center."

The Health and Human Services Department is rushing to open facilities across the country to house immigrant children who are otherwise being held by the Border Patrol, which is generally supposed to detain children for no more than three days. The Border Patrol is holding children longer because there is next to no space in the HHS system, similar to the last major increase in migration two years ago.

A tent facility operated by the Border Patrol in Donna, some 500 miles south of Dallas, is holding more than 1,000 children and teenagers, some as young as 4. Lawyers who inspect immigrant detention facilities under a court settlement say they interviewed children who reported being held in packed conditions in the tent, with some sleeping on the floor and others not able to shower for five days.

Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas on Saturday directed the Federal Emergency Management Agency to help manage and care for children crossing the border.

"I am incredibly proud of the agents of the Border Patrol, who have been working around the clock in difficult circumstances to take care of children temporarily in our care," Mayorkas said in a statement. "Yet, as I have said many times, a Border Patrol facility is no place for a child."

Asked about housing migrant teens at the convention center, White House press secretary Jen Psaki said Monday that the administration has been looking for additional facilities for unaccompanied children but that she would have to look into the specifics of the arrangement in Dallas.

"Certainly we would ensure that we're meeting the standard that we have set out," Psaki said.

The growing number of child arrivals comes at politically charged moment, with Congress taking up immigration legislation this week. Biden has delighted pro-immigration advocates by backing a bill to offer a path to citizenship to all of the estimated 11 million people in the U.S. illegally. He also suspended several Trump-era policies to deter asylum, including one that forced them to wait in Mexico for court hearings in the U.S.

Republicans have seized on the numbers to portray a border spinning out of control.

"This crisis is created by the presidential policies of this new administration," House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy said Monday while leading a large congressional delegation to El Paso, Texas. "There's no other way to claim it than a Biden border crisis."

Biden has kept pandemic-related powers in place that allow him to immediately expel people who enter the country without legal status, denying them an opportunity to seek asylum. Biden aides have yet to say when they may lift that authority. It does not extend to children who cross the border alone.

U.S. authorities encountered children traveling alone 9,457 times in February, nearly double the amount in January and the highest since May 2019, when the number encountered neared 12,000 during the peak of a Trump-era surge.

The memo sent to Dallas City Council members says the Federal Emergency Management Agency and HHS will "be responsible for providing shelter management and contracts" for food, security, cleaning, and medical care at the convention center. Dallas previously offered space to HHS during the 2014 surge of crossings of immigrant children.

Dallas City Manager T.C. Broadnax said in a statement that "collective action is necessary, and we will do our best to support this humanitarian effort." He referred questions to HHS, which did not respond to requests for comment Monday.

HHS also has said it will house immigrant youths in Midland. Teenagers began arriving Sunday at a converted camp for oilfield workers where volunteers from the American Red Cross will care for them. BuzzFeed News first reported the opening of the Midland facility.

The Red Cross has sent about 60 volunteers to the facilities in Midland and Dallas and expects to deploy more in the coming days, said Greta Gustafson, a spokeswoman for the group.

The surge at the U.S.-Mexico border has presented a major test for Biden's administration, which promised to break from the more restrictive measures against migrants enacted by Trump. Biden has left in place some Trump policies, notably the expulsions of immigrant adults and families under a public-health declaration citing the coronavirus pandemic.

Biden declined to reinstate public-health expulsions of children, and his administration has also been unable to expel many families in South Texas due to policy changes in Mexico's Tamaulipas state, across from the Texas Rio Grande Valley.

Border agents are apprehending more than 400 children a day on average, far more than the number of children that HHS is processing and releasing to sponsors. The Biden administration has announced several policy changes to try to expedite releases, but experts and immigration lawyers say the government could do more to speed up the process, particularly of releasing children to their parents in the U.S.

DALLAS — The U.S. government will use the downtown Dallas convention center to hold up to 3,000 immigrant teenagers as sharply higher numbers of border crossings have severely strained the current capacity to hold youths.

During a White House briefing Monday, Press Secretary Jen Psaki acknowledged the administration is facing a "big problem" on the US-Mexico border. More than 4,000 unaccompanied minors are in Border Patrol custody.

Once in Border Patrol custody, they are supposed to be turned over to Health and Human Services, however because of coronavirus pandemic safety measures, capacity at HHS facilities have been limited.

“We recognize this is a big problem. The last administration left us a dismantled and unworkable system, and like any other problem, we're going to do everything we can to solve it," Psaki told reporters Monday.

Reports of unaccompanied migrant children being forced to stay overnight in parked buses at the Dallas convention center are “completely unacceptable” if true, U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra said Friday.

Dr. Amy Cohen, a psychiatrist and executive director of the advocacy group Every Last One, said a 15-year-old Honduran boy she is working with was held on a bus from Saturday to Wednesday, using the bus bathroom during that time and unable to move about freely or communicate with family. The boy encountered at least three other children who were held for the same time in the parking lot of the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center, said Cohen, who also has been in contact with another child who was confined earlier to a bus for an extended period.

It is unclear how many children were kept on buses overnight.

“This is completely unacceptable," Becerra said. "We’re quickly investigating this to get to the bottom of what happened, and we’ll work to make sure this never happens again. The safety and well-being of the children is our priority.”

White House press secretary Jen Psaki said “there’s no excuse for this kind of treatment."

The reports are “outrageous, they’re unacceptable and they do not meet our standard for child care," Psaki said.

The Honduran boy's experience, first reported by NBC News, comes as Health and Human Services massively expands its capacity to house migrant children until they can be placed with a sponsor in the United States, usually parents or close relatives, while their cases wind through immigration court. It comes in response to the largest influx of unaccompanied children on record.

The department, whose lodging is more suited to longer-term stays than Border Patrol holding facilities, has grown its capacity to about 20,000 beds from less than 1,000 in mid-February. It's opened 14 emergency intake centers, including at the Dallas convention center and other large venues. The Dallas facility opened in February with plans to house up to 3,000 children.

Health and Human Services had 20,397 unaccompanied children in its custody as of Wednesday.

The government flew the Honduran boy to Seattle to reunite with his mother and uncle after NBC News inquired about his status.

MVM Inc., a transportation contractor for the government, said it has “safely and professionally” transported migrant children and families for more than six years.

“Over the last seven weeks, the number of children needing escorts in this pandemic environment has increased to more than 7,100, creating challenging travel logistics and resulting in some extended wait times on their way to reunification sites,” the company said in a statement.

MVM said it experienced some delays at a 24-hour regional hub where buses meet to get children on their way to join family, which resulted in “a child staying at that site longer than our target wait time of four hours. This is a violation of our policy and we are conducting an internal review of this incident.”

The company said the child had access to an air-conditioned bus, food and snacks, bottled water and personal protective equipment.
