NEENAH, Wisc. (WGBA) — "Frosty the Snowman" has been helping kids cross the street in Neenah, Wisconsin, this month.

“Spreading a little love and a little joy at Christmas time,” said Vicki Hanson.

She has been a crossing guard for seven years.

“I have the best kids, the best families. It's really a lot of fun,” said Hanson.

The costume came from the W-Nots Community Choir. Members dress up as Christmas characters and visit nursing homes throughout the holiday season.

“We go to nursing homes and assisted living from after Thanksgiving until the middle of Christmas and dance and sing and act out Christmas songs,” said Hanson.

Holiday cheer is something she believes kids also need this time of year.

“Kids have enough stress and enough to think about. If they can just grab some love and joy in one moment of their day, it's my job to bring them happiness,” she said.

Video from Florida shows that the quick thinking of a crossing guard supervisor saved a young girl from getting hit by a car.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office (HCSO) shared the video of Kathleen Quinn from Jan. 27 in honor of Crossing Guard Appreciation Day.

A seven-year-old was crossing the intersection in Valrico, Florida, when a car swept through.

Even though Quinn was in the middle of the road, with her stop sign raised above her head, the driver did not slow down.

She reached for the young girl, who was walking her bike across the street, and prevented what could have been a tragic accident, HCSO said.

Mia Carlson witnessed the incident as she waited for her daughter on the other side of the road. Overcome with gratitude, Carlson contacted the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office to report Quinn's heroic actions.

"Ms. Kathleen Quinn is nothing less than a hero," Sheriff Chad Chronister said. "Though she has only served two years as a crossing guard, she undoubtedly possesses the skills and, above all, the intuition needed to perform this critical duty. Without hesitation, she stepped into harm's way to protect a child from a reckless driver. I am overwhelmed with pride to say she is part of our team of dedicated crossing guards who treat every child on their route as their own and ensure they get to and from school safely."

According to HCSO, 295 crossing guards help the county's children get to and from school safely.

‘I’ll stick with it’: This 96-year-old crossing guard hopes to hit a milestone

A 96-year-old retired schoolteacher, who is now a crossing guard in the Sherman Park neighborhood of Milwaukee, says he loves what he does, and he's hoping to hit a milestone."I get up at about 4 o'clock in the morning," Julius Campbell said. "And then I go down to this corner at 6:30 a.m."The World War II Navy veteran and retired teacher has seen a lot in his time, but he said helping kids cross the street to get to Yeshiva Elementary School is a rewarding experience."I just love education and being around and doing things for people, helping people," Campbell said.It takes less than 20 seconds to cross the street. That's how much time Campbell has taken to forge lifelong bonds, little by little, day by day, for the past 24 years."A lot of the kids graduate, come back, and I'm getting their kids going now," Campbell said.He said they keep him young.And when you ask the 96-year-old the secret to staying active: "I never lived a rough ... fast life. Never drank, and I never did all those things, run around late at night. So, that makes a difference."Looking forward, he said he wants to make it to 100."But as long as life, as long as my health is good, I'll stick with it," Campbell said.

For decades, 96-year-old Julius Campbell has helped Milwaukee students cross the street — and he says he still has a few good years left in him.

Campbell is a World War II veteran and a retired Milwaukee Public Schools teacher. He’s seen a lot in his time but says that helping students cross the street to Yeshiva Elementary is a rewarding experience.

"I just love education and being around and doing things for people, helping people,” he said.

Campbell has served as a crossing guard for 24 years, meaning he’s helped an entire generation of Milwaukee students cross the street safely.

“A lot of the kids graduate, come back and I'm getting their kids going now," Campbell said.

He says it took a lifetime of preparation to remain active at his age.

“I never lived a rough or fast life,” Campbell said. “(I) never drank, and all those things — run around late at night. So that makes a difference.”

Though he’s been at it for years— waking up at 4 a.m. on school days to be at 51^st and Roosevelt by 6:30 — he’s hoping to keep at it for at least a few more.

“I want to make it to 100,” Campbell said. “But as long as my health is good, I'll stick with it.
