CINCINNATI — Cincinnati Police data shows the West End is a hotspot for gun violence, with 18 shootings so far this year — one of which took place just before 1 a.m. Friday.

The West End Community Council is working with several different groups to change that.

"We follow the priorities of the neighborhood and they're saying they want it to stop and not be scared of coming out of their apartment," said Andria Carter with the Community Partnering Center.

She's been working in the West End for more than three years trying to stop gun violence by addressing conditions that lead to violence.

"We've been able to concentrate on litter, more lighting," she said.

They're also working to increase visibility by cutting back trees, adding more cameras and making current cameras more visible.

Keith Blake, safety committee chair of the West End Community Council, said this is just one strategy they've implemented.

"We have our monthly safety sector meetings with the police department," he said.

The CPD program, PIVOT, is also active in the neighborhood. PIVOT stands for Place-based Investigations of Violent Offender Territories and is a program that teams law enforcement officers with property owners and city departments to target known crime problem spots.

CPD data shows the program significantly reduced shootings in parts of Over-the-Rhine last year.

In the West End, the partnership with police continues beyond PIVOT.

"The results from police investigations help us understand why an incident occurred," Blake said. "And once we get a better understanding of why they do what they do, then you can develop strategies to address it."

There's also a broader network working with some Cincinnati neighborhoods to address gun violence called the Community Peace Builder Network.

"What we want to do is bring them around the table and build what we call an ecosystem. Through that ecosystem we put together all of the components that basically address the issue and make sure that we're supporting each of those levels," Pastor Ennis Tait said.

The network is currently in East Westwood, Winton Terrace and Avondale. It works with individuals and groups that are already in the neighborhood doing anti-gun violence work but gives them additional resources.

Tait said their goal is to expand into OTR and the West End by the end of the year.

The grandfather and uncle of a 3-year-old girl killed last fall during an exorcism at a Northern California church have been arrested this week in connection with her death.

The child died last September after family members performed a ceremony because they believed she was "possessed by an evil spirit," court documents show. The Santa Clara County medical examiner's office ruled the death a homicide caused by asphyxiation.

The San Jose Police Department said on Friday that police arrested the child's grandfather and uncle on charges of child abuse leading to the death of the victim. The child's mother was arrested and charged in January. It was not immediately known if the girl's grandfather and uncle have an attorney who can speak on their behalf.

The grandfather told the Mercury News last week that he performed a ceremony on the child to “liberate her of her evil spirits,” the Associated Press reported. He didn’t reveal all of the details of the exorcism but said his granddaughter was asleep when she got to the church, and he said that the ceremony took two hours.

“If you read the Bible, you’ll see that Jesus casts away demons and made sick people healthy again,” he said. “It’s not when I want to do it, it’s when God, in his will, wants to heal the person. The preacher is like an instrument of God; what we do is what God says.”

A jury in Portland, Oregon, has convicted a novelist — who once wrote an essay titled “How to Murder Your Husband" — of fatally shooting her husband.

Daniel Brophy died four years ago.

KOIN-TV reports the Multnomah County jury of seven women and five men delivered a guilty verdict Wednesday on a second-degree murder charge after deliberating over two days.

He was shot and killed as he prepped for work at the Oregon Culinary Institute in Southwest Portland.

His wife Crampton Brophy was arrested three months later, in September of 2018.

Prosecutors determined that the writer’s motive for killing her husband was to cash in on his life insurance policies, so she could alleviate herself from debt.

Crampton Brophy’s 2011 essay was not used as evidence during the trial.

Sentencing will take place on June 13.

One of Crampton Brophy’s attorneys said the defense team plans to appeal.

A sheriff's deputy has died in a shooting in Wicomico County, Maryland, about 2 hours by car outside of Washington, D.C.

The sheriff's office said Deputy First Class Glenn Hilliard was shot and killed trying to arrest a man who reportedly had multiple felony warrants. Hilliard was a 16-year veteran of the force.

The sheriff's office said Deputy Hilliard spotted a suspect coming out of an apartment complex around the coastal Maryland town of Pittsville. That's about 20 miles away from Ocean City, Maryland. After a brief chase, Hilliard was shot. The sheriff's office says Hilliard would have celebrated his 42nd birthday next Wednesday, June 22.

A man was arrested in connection to the shooting. Authorities said a man named Austin Davidson was being questioned. State police is handling the investigation.

Wicomico County Sheriff Michael Lewis said, "The deputy never got an opportunity to get his gun out of his holster."

On Twitter, Governor Larry Hogan offered his condolences and said that he's been in touch with the Sheriff's Office to offer support.

Hogan also ordered flags to fly at half-staff in memory of Hilliard.

CINCINNATI — A Cincinnati police officer was attacked and beaten with a metal pipe after responding to a 911 call for a reported robbery near Sixth and Elm Friday night said Dan Hils, Cincinnati Fraternal Order of Police President.

The attack occurred after officer Johnny Harris, a 16-year CPD veteran was attempting to talk with a robbery suspect, Hils said.

The suspect, Charlando Peoples, 34, is accused of having used a concealed metal pipe to attack the officer, causing serious physical harm including several broken bones in Harris' face.

Officer Harris will need reconstructive surgery, Hils said.

Peoples faces numerous charges including assault, robbery, resisting arrest and felonious assault. He is being held on $365,000 bond. Peoples next day in court is July 18.

Funeral services for the seven people killed by a gunman at an Independence Day parade will conclude Monday as family and friends gather in suburban Chicago to remember Kevin McCarthy.

McCarthy’s funeral service is scheduled for Monday afternoon in Skokie, Illinois. In an obituary, he is described as a father, husband, brother, uncle and son who “brought the fun to every situation.”

The 37-year-old father and his wife, Irina, were killed in the Highland Park parade attack. They left behind a 2-year-old son, Aiden, whose story prompted thousands of people to donate money for the orphaned boy.

“Kevin’s irrepressible zest for life and his family and friends will remain with us always,” his family wrote in the obituary. “We love you.”

Irina McCarthy was buried last week.

Services for the five other victims have been held in recent weeks. They have been identified as: 64-year-old Katherine Goldstein, 63-year-old Jacquelyn Sundheim, 88-year-old Stephen Straus and 78-year-old Nicolas Toledo-Zaragoza and 69-year-old Eduardo Uvaldo.

Prosecutors have charged 21-year-old Robert E. Crimo III with seven counts of murder and said they expect to present attempted murder charges representing the people wounded in the attack.

A 47-year-old man has been arrested and charged with murder in Georgia.

Police said Richard Sigman got into an argument with a man at a restaurant. The man reportedly claimed Sigman threatened to shoot him. Police said a security officer confronted Sigman and told him to leave.

The Carrollton Police Department says an investigation indicates Sigman walked into a parking deck and began shooting into a parked vehicle, striking
the victim who died after being taken to a hospital.

She has been identified as Anna Jones, a recent graduate of Mount Zion High School. She reportedly planned to attend the University of West Georgia, where Sigman was a professor.

"UWG has terminated the employment of Richard Sigman and continues to work with the city of Carrollton Police Department, which leads this ongoing investigation," university president Dr. Brendan Kelly said in a statement obtained by CBS News. "On behalf of the university, we wish to convey our deepest condolences to Anna's family and many friends."

The man accused of shooting and killing seven people and wounding dozens more at a Fourth of July parade in Highland Park, Illinois, has pleaded not guilty.

Robert E. Crimo III appeared in a courtroom wearing a mask. He reportedly told the judge he understood the charges.

Last month, the 21-year-old was indicted on 21 first-degree murder counts (3 counts for each victim), 48 counts of attempted murder and 48 counts of aggravated battery.

Authorities previously said the suspected gunman admitted to carrying out the shooting.

The multiple first-degree murder charges allege the suspect intended to kill, caused death or great bodily harm and took action with a strong probability of causing death or great bodily harm on the seven people who died.

Authorities have said the more than 30 wounded range in age from 8 to their 80s.

Investigators believe the suspect left parade route, then used his mother's car to driver to Madison, Wisconsin where he reportedly contemplated another attack. He was arrested upon returning to Illinois.

The McDonald's employee who was shot at a Brooklyn, New York, restaurant on Monday has reportedly died.

According to WNBC, the alleged shooter and the 23-year-old employee got into an altercation stemming from cold french fries.

Police said they arrested a 20-year-old for the shooting. He is charged with attempted murder and criminal possession. Those charges could be upgraded now that the victim is dead.

An 18-year-old was also arrested in the case. PIX 11 reports that she handed the shooter the weapon and then ran off with it after the shooting.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — A Las Vegas investigative reporter was stabbed to death outside his home and police are looking for a suspect, authorities said.

Las Vegas Metropolitan Police officers found journalist Jeff German, 69, dead with stab wounds around 10:30 a.m. Saturday after authorities received a 911 call, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported.

German died of “multiple sharp force injuries” in a homicide, the Clark County Office of the Coroner/Medical Examiner said Sunday.

It appears German was in an altercation with another person that led to the stabbing, which is believed to be an isolated incident, police said.

“We believe the altercation took place outside of the home,” Capt. Dori Koren, a Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department spokesman, said at a news conference. “We do have some leads. We are pursuing a suspect but the suspect is outstanding.”

Glenn Cook, the Review-Journal’s executive editor, said German had not communicated any concerns about his personal safety or any threats made against him to anyone in the newspaper’s leadership.

“The Review-Journal family is devastated to lose Jeff,” Cook said in a statement. “He was the gold standard of the news business. It’s hard to imagine what Las Vegas would be like today without his many years of shining a bright light on dark places.”

German joined the Review-Journal in 2010 after more than two decades at the Las Vegas Sun, where he was a columnist and reporter who covered courts, politics, labor, government and organized crime.

He was known for his stories about government malfeasance and political scandals and coverage of the 2017 mass shooting at a Las Vegas music festival that killed 60 people and wounded more than 400 others.

According to the Review-Journal, German held a master’s degree from Marquette University and was the author of the 2001 true-crime book “Murder in Sin City: The Death of a Las Vegas Casino Boss,” the story of the death of Ted Binion, heir to the Horseshoe Club fortune.

BULLHEAD CITY, Ariz. (AP) — Authorities are trying to identify a mummified body found by police in the bathtub of a northwestern Arizona home as they investigated a burglary.

Bullhead City police said officers responding to a burglary in progress around 3:30 a.m. Saturday discovered 65-year-old Christine Lee Walters rummaging through items inside the house.

They said there were pry marks on the door, indicating forced entry into the home, and that Walters had been going inside for days and taking clothing, purses and other items she allegedly planned to sell online.

Police said officers searched the house and found the body in the tub in a natural mummified state, which occurs when a corpse is exposed to very dry conditions that slow typical decomposition.

Police said Walters told officers she didn't know the body was in the house.

It's unknown how long the body was in the bathtub. Neighbors told police they believed that the house was vacant and that the homeowner may have moved away because they hadn't been seen for about a year.

The Mohave County Medical Examiner's Office was trying to determine the cause of death.

Detectives found the homeowner's birth certificate, credit cards, driver's license and income tax paperwork during searches of Walters' home and vehicle. She booked into jail on suspicion of two counts of burglary. Police said they are seeking additional charges after methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia were found in her possession.

It was unclear Thursday if Walters has a lawyer who can speak on her behalf.

As many as 30 people were shot in a mass shooting overnight in Baltimore, Maryland, police said.

Baltimore Police Department Acting Commissioner Rich Worley said officers received multiple calls just after 12:30 a.m. for a mass shooting in the Brooklyn neighborhood, where there was a block party underway.

Worley said officers found an 18-year-old woman dead at the scene. Nine others were taken to hospitals, and as many as 20 others arrived at hospitals across the region on their own.

A 20-year-old man also died, and three others were in critical condition.

Worley said a suspect is not in custody, but that investigators were reviewing video and talking to witnesses to try to identify a suspect. Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott implored the public to provide information.

"This is an absolute tragedy that did not have to happen," Scott said. "Anyone that knows anything about what happened here, anything about this mass shooting, to come forward with any piece of information. Treat this as if it was your family and how you would want people to treat it as as if you were mourning, as if this were an event happening in your community."

Residents told our sister station WBAL TV there was a large gathering in the neighborhood before they heard what sounded like fireworks, which they later learned were gunshots.

No further information was immediately released.

Authorities say a Brinks armored truck driver shot and killed a suspected robber during an attempted heist on Friday in Oakland, California.

According to Police, one person is dead, and two others were injured in the shootout, including an innocent bystander.

One of the injured also includes a Brinks guard.

The incident happened around 2 p.m. local time on Friday in broad daylight.

KGO reported that Oakland city councilman Noel Gallo said the Brinks employee shot the alleged robber in self-defense.

The two others were taken to area hospitals, but it was not clear if they had been released or what their conditions were.

According to Gallo, other suspects involved fled the scene and were not immediately apprehended by police.

As Florida begins to recover from Hurricane Ian, people are being warned about looting.

Lee County Sheriff Carmine Marceno appeared to threaten to use force on suspected looters.

"They might be able to walk into someone's home, they might, but they will, they will be carried out," he said. "I ain't playing games."

It's unclear whether looting has become a pervasive problem in the wake of Hurricane Ian.

However, it's clear officials want to discourage the criminal act as many homes and businesses remain vulnerable.

"Florida will not tolerate looters taking advantage of #HurricaneIan to prey on vulnerable Floridians," said Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody.

In the days immediately following Hurricane Ian, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis also warned looters that they could be shot.

"I would not want want to chance that if I were you, given that we are a Second Amendment state," DeSantis said.

STOCKTON, Calif. (AP) — Ballistics tests have linked the fatal shootings of six men and the wounding of one woman in California — all potentially at the hands of a serial killer — in crimes going back more than a year, police said.

Authorities last week announced that five men in Stockton had been slain in recent months, ambushed and shot to death alone in the dark. Late Monday, police said two additional cases last year — a man's death in Oakland and the non-fatal shooting of a woman in Stockton — had been tied to those killings.

“It definitely meets the definition of a serial killer,” said Stockton Police Officer Joseph Silva. “What makes this different is the shooter is just looking for an opportunity, and unfortunately our victims were alone in a dark area.”

Police would not say whether all seven shootings had been linked to the same gun.

In the fatal Stockton cases, none of the men was robbed or beaten before the killings — which all took place within a radius of a few square miles between July 8 and Sept. 27 — and none appeared to have known each other, Silva said. The shootings also do not seem to be related to gangs or drugs.

The other Stockton crime — in which a 46-year-old woman was shot but survived her injuries — occurred April 16, 2021, around 3:20 a.m., police said. The woman was also alone at the time.

The shooting death of a 40-year-old man in Oakland has also been connected to the violence in Stockton, police said. The man was shot to death around 4:15 a.m. on April 10, 2021. It was not immediately clear whether the man was also unaccompanied when he was killed.

The city of Stockton, Stockton Crime Stoppers and a local construction company owner offered a total of $95,000 for information leading to an arrest in the slayings.

Police released a grainy still image of a “person of interest," dressed all in black and wearing a black cap, who appeared in videos from several of the homicide crime scenes in Stockton.

The San Joaquin County’s Office of the Medical Examiner identified the Stockton victims on Monday as Paul Yaw, 35, who was killed on July 8; Salvador Debudey Jr., 43, who died on Aug. 11; Jonathan Hernandez Rodriguez, 21, who died on Aug. 30; Juan Cruz, 52, who was killed on Sept. 21 and Lawrence Lopez Sr., 54.

Lopez was shot shortly before 2 a.m. on Sept. 27 in a residential area just north of downtown.

He “was just a person who was out here at the wrong place, at the wrong time, at the wrong circumstance,” his brother, Jerry Lopez, told KXTV-TV. “It’s hard to process that this has happened.”

There may even be multiple people involved in the violence.

“To be honest, we just don’t know,” Silva said. “This person or people who are out doing this, they are definitely very bold and brazen.”

Police said four of the Stockton homicide victims were walking alone and a fifth was in a parked car when they were killed in the evening or early morning in the city of 320,000 residents, located about 50 miles (80 kilometers) south of the state capital, Sacramento.

CINCINNATI — A teenager was taken to the hospital after a drive-by shooting in Avondale Friday evening, Cincinnati police said.

Officers responded to the 600 block of Prospect Place for a reported shooting at around. Police said a 17-year-old was shot in the eye. The teen's condition is unknown, as is the number of victims and suspects.

A WCPO crew at the scene said officers told a man who said it was his nephew who had been shot that his nephew was still alive and had been taken to the hospital.

Police have not provided a description of the vehicle involved in the drive-by shooting.

CINCINNATI — Four teens were taken into custody Friday after a brief police pursuit that led to a crash in Delhi, CPD Lt. Jonathan Cunningham said.

The crash happened Friday afternoon after there was a car stolen from the Western Hills Target parking lot at 6150 Glenway Ave. From there, police were involved in a pursuit that led into Delhi where the stolen car crashed into a brick wall at the intersection of Anderson Ferry and Cleves Warsaw.

Cunningham said four juveniles were taken into custody after the crash.

Police did not say if any people were injured or other cars were damaged during the incident.

It is also unclear how the four juveniles stole the car from the Target parking lot.

HAMILTON, Ohio — Hamilton police are investigating after a report of two people dead appears to be a murder and subsequent suicide, Hamilton police Lt. Donald H. Taylor said.

Just before 9:30 a.m. Saturday morning, officers responded to 676 Rockford Drive in Hamilton for a report of two dead individuals.

Investigations so far show that the incident is the result of an apparent murder then suicide, Taylor said.

Police said the identities of those dead won't be released until they're assured families have been notified.

Police have not given any indication as to what lead up to the murder and suicide, as well.

The investigation into the deaths is still ongoing, but police said they are not searching for any additional suspects.

This is a developing story and WCPO will update when more information is available.

4 juveniles taken into custody after police pursuit of stolen car ends in Delhi crash

CINCINNATI — Two men were indicted Friday for the shooting death of 33-year-old Lorenzo Gray, Hamilton County Prosecutor Joe Deters said.

Marquez Coleman, 27, and Charlie Dailey, 26, were each indicted on one count of aggravated murder, one count of murder, one count of felonious assault and two counts of having weapons under disability.

If convicted, Coleman and Dailey could face life in prison.

The indictments come after Gray was shot to death June 19. Dailey allegedly drove Coleman and an unidentified third suspect to a park near 1769 Carll Street. Coleman and the third suspect exited Dailey's vehicle, approached Gray and shot him multiple times, Deters said. The three then fled.

Gray was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to Deters, at the time of the shooting, Gray was standing in front of his infant child.

Coleman was facing four pending felony indictments at the time of the shooting, and he was out on bond with an ankle monitor. Since May 5, Coleman had an active warrant out for his arrest due to cutting that ankle monitor off.

Coleman's pending indictments include drug trafficking, drug possession and more.

Dailey was also out on bond facing three pending indictments at the time of the murder. He was ordered to wear an ankle monitor as well, which was monitoring his location at the time of the murder, Deters said.

His other pending indictments included trafficking fentanyl, improper handling of a firearm and more.

Deters said both indictments are a prime example of failures in the justice system. He also disagreed with the use of ankle monitors and said they're "not sufficient" to protect people.

"A man was murdered in front of his infant child by two men who should have never been on the street," Deters said. "This has to change."

Both men are being held in the Hamilton County Justice Center.

At least three people are dead and several others are hospitalized after an early morning shooting in Kanas City.

Kanas City Police were called to investigate a shooting that occurred Sunday morning around 4:30 a.m.

Police found 3 shooting victims in a parking lot and in the street. Those 3 victims, 2 men and 1 woman died at the scene.

Officers said at least 5 more shooting victims arrived at various hospitals by private vehicles or ambulances.

According to police, they have non-life-threatening injuries.

"My condolences to the families of the three people killed," Kanas City Mayor Quinton Lucas said in a series of tweets Sunday morning.

Police said it appears there was a large gathering of people in the parking lot at the intersection when the victims were shot.

OXFORD, Ohio — A Miami University student's death is under investigation, the Butler County Coroner's Office said.

Allyson Webb, 19, was found dead Nov. 5 at the 400 block of Oak Street in Oxford.

The coroner's office has not given a cause of death.

Miami University released a statement Nov. 7 regarding Webb's death.

"We are heartbroken to lose this member of our community and send our condolences to our student's family and friends," the university said.

The university said Webb lived on campus in Hamilton Hall.

Miami did not give any more specifics into her death and said no more information would be provided as they honor the family's request for privacy.

Counseling services were made available to residents of Hamilton Hall, as well as any Miami University students who need it.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The places may change names, but the pain remains the same—mass violence inflicted on people going about their lives.

“That's all that we knew. That he had been shot,” said Deborah Hayslett, whose brother was being treated at a hospital after he was shot during a mass shooting at a Walmart in Chesapeake, Virginia on Tuesday night.

What happened in Virginia and at the LGBTQ nightclub in Colorado several days prior, both are called a “mass shooting” because they fit a specific definition. What exactly does that entail, though?

“That's a really interesting question because it's very much debated in the academic literature,” said Jaclyn Schildkraut, an associate professor of criminal justice at the State University of New York at Oswego and co-editor of the Journal of Mass Violence Research. “Regardless of the definition that you use, all of our different data sources are showing the same thing, and that is an upward trend.”

According to the Gun Violence Archive, there have now been 606 mass shootings in America so far in 2022. Those are defined as when four or more people are injured or killed, not including the shooter.

There have also been 36 mass murders, defined as when more than four people were killed, not including the perpetrator.

“But it doesn't really take into account any sort of the contextual factors,” Schildkraut said. “So, as a result, you have things like gang violence and then familicides, or family shootings, kind of lumped in with what happened in Walmart last night, even though they're very different types of events.”

Daniel Webster studies gun violence and mass shootings as co-director of the Center for Gun Violence Solutions at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

“We tend to really compartmentalize the problem of gun violence,” he said, “and, the truth is, there's a lot of similarities across the different forms of gun violence.”

Webster said when it comes to mass shootings, in particular, there are commonalities when it comes to how they unfold.

“Some of the basics are remarkably consistent,” Webster said. “It's generally a male phenomenon. Again, it's easy access to firearms and acting on some sense of grievance.”

Experts say that makes the sheer number of mass shootings in the country, a distinctly American phenomenon.

“We have not seen historic rises in gun violence or mass shootings in other countries,” Webster said. “We are unique, in not a good way.”

Schildkraut, who is also the interim executive director of the Regional Gun Violence Research Consortium at the Rockefeller Institute, said there are things that can be done to minimize the number of mass shootings.

“There is a lot of planning, a lot of premeditation that goes into them, and so, these are not individuals who wake up and snap. These are individuals who invest a lot of time into preparing for what they're intending to do,” she said. “We have to work to be more proactive to prevent gun violence and less reactive. And so, I think kind of keeping those things in mind is really important, as we sort of struggle with, ‘How do we go to places like Walmart to pick up our Thanksgiving dinner and feel unsafe?’”

It is a question that the country is grappling with on this most American of holidays.

Dozens of volunteers came together at Irving Playground in Avondale to help revitalize a blighted park and to help police with a new plan to fight crime.

“It's extremely exciting to see everybody dive in like they are now,” volunteer Michael Neade said.

About 50 volunteers planted hundreds of flowers and plants. The Cincinnati Zoo and Mad Tree Brewing accounted for the bulk of the volunteers.

“Today is not where it stops. So, it continues to grow and get better,” volunteer Catie Bechstamper said.

At the same time, there’s another plan weaved into the revitalization effort. It’s devised by police because of crime problems at the park.

“I was getting a lot of complaints about nuisance, drug dealing, crowds, violent behavior, in this exact park,” Cincinnati Police Sgt. Jeff Meister said. “We just kind of chose this, put all efforts into Irving Playground.”

Meister said they’re working with a new concept that uses environmental design to help prevent crime.

The idea is that involving the community makes them more invested in keeping the area safe. It gives them a sense of ownership in the project.

“It's all about relationships, right? Like between the pollinators in the plants, between the neighborhood and all of the organizations around, between the city officials and everybody who is involved in making this project happen,” said Cincinnati Zoo director of community partnerships and conservation Mollie O’Neil. “Spaces like this in nature really do help people root and a sense of place and then care for this area and make great memories.”

BOSTON (AP) — Human remains found at a Boston apartment building earlier this month are those of four infants, police said.

The remains are of two boys and two girls, Boston police said in a statement posted on the department's website Monday. No arrests have been announced and an investigation is ongoing.

Officers originally responded to the building Nov. 17 and found what appeared to be human remains. The next day they found more.

The Suffolk district attorney’s office previously confirmed that some of the remains were found in a freezer.

They were removed by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, and were determined to be the remains of four infants, police said. Autopsy results are pending.

Police and the Suffolk district attorney's office are continuing to investigate. No additional details were made public.
