Jerry Mills is a die-hard Bengals fan.Ed Fernandes cheers for the Raiders. Before Saturday, the two were strangers. Now, they share a special bond."I believe God put me there for a reason so that man could have another day of living," Mills said. Mills had just wrapped up an afternoon of tailgating. He was on his way in to Paul Brown Stadium when he saw a Raiders fan on the ground. People in the crowd thought he was having a seizure."I look at him and, "I'm like, 'that doesn't look like a seizure activity.' I look for a pulse, he didn't have a pulse, and I was like, 'I'm going to start CPR right now,'" Mills said. Mills, who is from Cincinnati and a former Covington firefighter, currently works as an emergency room nurse in Dallas."Being a nurse for the past three years, I've always told everybody I work with, 'Look, we're not losing nobody on my shift,'" Mills said. That's how he felt outside PBS Saturday."I'm sitting there telling him, 'I'm not losing you today.' And so, the other nurse was helping and two minutes later, he got a pulse," Mills said. But then Mills said he lost it again. Mills said the other nurse who jumped in to help also acted selflessly."She took the guy's shirt, put it across his face and started to breathe into his mouth," Mills said. The two nurses continued to do what they had to to keep the Raiders fan alive until Cincinnati firefighters arrived. On Tuesday, Mills learned the name of the man he saved, Ed Fernandes of Dayton, who had planned on attending the game with his grandson, Noah.Noah told WLWT that his grandfather is still at UC Medical Center with blockages in his heart. He is scheduled to have surgery Thursday. Fernandes' family said they can't put into words how grateful they are for Mills.

<p>CELEBRATION, Fla. — Almost half of the people who receive CPR, 45%, received it from a bystander. That’s why kids at one Florida high school are learning it.</p>
<p>Students at Celebration High School are getting a crash course in saving lives.</p>
<p>“As soon as the video is over, I’m going to explain to them what we are doing with the dummies and how they are doing CPR and how we’re checking them,” said Rokaia Collison, a teacher leading the training. </p>
<p>A new law in Florida now requires 9th and 11th graders to learn the lifesaving technique.</p>
<p>According to the American Heart Association, Florida is the 39th state where CPR training is mandatory.</p>
<p>“Learning hands-only CPR teaches them skills outside of a high school setting and as they grow older, should they experience somebody experiencing out-of-hospital cardiac arrest, they might be able to assist them,” said Michelle Turnage with the American Heart Association. </p>
<p>Natasha Alejandro is a junior at Celebration High School. We followed her through the process of learning CPR.</p>
<p>She and her classmates got in line and when it was their turn, they stepped up to the dummies.</p>
<p>"It doesn’t seem hard, but I feel like if I was doing it to a real person, I’m not doing anything because I can’t feel the clicking,” she said. </p>
<p>It’s not a real-life experience, but now Alejandro and hundreds of other students have a little more know-how should they need it.</p>
<p>“Conditioning always conditions you for the main event, so I guess learning this beforehand does condition you to any certain event,” said Alejandro. </p>
<p>It’s a real-world skill that students like Brandon Gonzales are happy to have. He’s a funny kid, but he knows this is serious.</p>
<p>“That’s a life, got to save everyone, because everyone is equal,” he said.</p>
<p>You never know when you might be able to save a life</p>
<p>“He died on the gym floor and while we can’t say what the outcome would have been, he had absolutely no chance at survival in his situation when there’s no CPR and no AED used, then you have no chance," said Kristin Cobb Simpson.</p>
<p>She lost her nephew, Burke, in 2012 after he collapsed during a pickup basketball game. Burke had an enlarged heart and went into cardiac arrest.</p>
<p>Despite his condition, the family believes if CPR had been initiated, there’s a good chance Burke could have survived. In 2014, they lobbied the Louisiana legislature to pass the Burke Cobb Act, requiring all Louisiana high school students to learn CPR.</p>
<p>“Even that situation that Burke was in, those 20 to 25 friends could be potential lifesavers,” said Cobb Simpson. </p>
<p>The kids we spoke with in Celebration are happy about the new law in Florida.</p>
<p>“Enforcing this does give us a positive outlook when it comes to certain situations like this. Hey, I do know how to do this, hey I can be useful. Even if we called 911, it takes a while to get here,” said Alejandro. </p>
<p>While they’re waiting for professionals to arrive, kids in Celebration, and across the country will have the skills to help save a life.</p>

<p>GEAUGA COUNTY, Ohio — Danny Tiller is a typical 13-year-old. The Ohio boy plays football and wrestles for the 8th-grade team at Berkshire Local Schools. But earlier this month, Tiller did <a class="Link" href="https://www.news5cleveland.com/news/local-news/oh-geauga/geauga-county-8th-grader-saves-man-from-drowning-while-on-family-vacation">something not so typical</a> for a teenager—he saved a life.</p>
<p>“It was a fight-or-flight kind of thing,” said Tiller.</p>
<p>The Tiller family vacationed in Alabama over Labor Day weekend and went swimming at the Little River Canyon National Preserve.</p>
<p>“It’s a pretty wide river, and the part where you jump off the rocks, it turns into a waterfall and it gets pretty deep,” he said.</p>
<p>Danny’s mom, Faith, watched as he and his family members jumped into the water and as a man jumped in shortly after them.</p>
<p>Danny and his family members successfully navigated the current and swam back to land, but Faith says she was confused to see Danny jump back into the river.</p>
<p>“I saw Danny jump back in and I was like, ‘Why is he jumping back in?’” she said.</p>
<p>But Danny jumped back in because he saw the man who had been on the cliff edge with him struggling against the river’s current.</p>
<p>“I saw him flail his arms and he asked for help, and I jumped in feet first,” Danny said. “I grabbed him under the shoulder and under his arm.”</p>
<p>It was a scary sight for his mom and dad to watch as they ran to help.</p>
<p>“I was watching from above and by the time Danny got to him, he was completely under the water,” said Faith.</p>
<p>Danny eventually got the unconscious man to the edge of the river, where his brother and cousins helped get him up.</p>
<p>“I noticed he wasn’t breathing, so I just started doing chest compressions on him,” he said.</p>
<p>While the 13-year-old wasn’t formally trained, he said he knew some general training.</p>
<p>“I heard you’re supposed to do it to the ‘Stayin' Alive’ song,” he said. “My mother is a nurse and she kind of says things and I just kind of picked it up from other places.”</p>
<p>His efforts were successful, and the man regained consciousness.</p>
<p>“By the time I got there, he was just starting to breathe,” said Faith.</p>
<p>Danny said he hasn’t talked to the man since the event, but said he just wanted to help.</p>
<p>“I saw him struggling and there was no one around me, so he probably wouldn’t have made it if I wasn’t there. It was a fight-or-flight kind of thing,” he said.</p>
<p>He proved to be a heroic and humble 13-year-old.</p>
<p>“I am just very proud of him,” said Faith. “I know that he has greatness in his future.”</p>

"Does anyone here know CPR?" is a question we never want to hear. But knowing how to perform basic CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) could be the difference between life or death for someone. The American Heart Association lays out a simple two-step process for CPR.Call 911 (or tell someone to do so if available)Push hard and fast in the center of the chest Before beginning, confirm the person is nonresponsive (and isn't just sleeping). For those who haven't taken a CPR class but witness an adult collapse, the AHA says to just use compression-only CPR, aka hands-only CPR. Do not worry about mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, leave that for health care providers and those trained to do so. Continue compressions until medical services have arrived. Hands-only CPR is CPR without delivering breaths mouth-to-mouth. This is recommended if you see a teen or adult collapse outside a hospital setting (at work, at home or in a public space where help is unavailable.)
