HONORED FOR THEIR ACHIEVEMENTS. MY LOCAL LATE BREAKING WVTM 13 NEWS AT 630 STARTS NOW. THANKS FOR STAYING WITH US AT 6:30 A.M. GUY RAWLINGS. AND I’M SHERI FALK. SUICIDE IS THE SECOND LEADING CAUSE OF DEATH AMONG YOUNG PEOPLE IN ALABAMA. YET TOO MANY FAMILIES LEFT WONDERING IF THEY COULD HAVE DONE MORE TO HELP. VICTIM 13. CHIP SCARBOROUGH IS LIVE IN BIRMINGHAM TONIGHT TO EXPLAIN WHY IT’S AN ISSUE THAT TOUCHES EVERY SINGLE PERSON. CHIP. GUY AND CHERIE. THE ALABAMA DEPARTMENT OF MENTAL HEALTH SAYS TEEN SUICIDE IS SOMETHING THAT AFFECTS PEOPLE OF ALL RACES, GENDERS AND NATIONALITIES. AND IT CAN AFFECT ANYONE AT ANY TIME. THE ALABAMA DEPARTMENT OF MENTAL HEALTH SAYS TEEN SUICIDE IS A MAJOR ISSUE IN THE STATE RIGHT NOW. AND 2020, ALABAMA RECORDED 793 SUICIDE AIDS TOTAL, 100. ONE OF THOSE WERE YOUNG PEOPLE BETWEEN THE AGES OF TEN AND 24, A GRIM REMINDER OF THE MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES FACING YOUNG PEOPLE. IT’S ALWAYS GREAT TO JUST TALK ABOUT IT. JUST BRING IT UP. JUST TALK ABOUT IT WITH YOUR PEERS. TALK ABOUT IT WITH SOMEONE YOU FEEL COMFORTABLE WITH, SUCH AS YOUR FAMILY OR YOUR FRIENDS. KRISTEN AMERSON COMMITTED SUICIDE IN THE SPRING OF 2014 AT THE AGE OF 11. HER BROTHER HAS SAID STARTED A FOUNDATION IN HER MEMORY, RAISING AWARENESS ABOUT THE ISSUE OF YOUTH SUICIDE AND PROVIDING RESOURCES AIMED AT IMPROVING MENTAL HEALTH. I STRONGLY BELIEVE IN BEING PROACTIVE, SO I THINK WE NEED TO HAVE MORE CONVERSATIONS WITH OUR CHILDREN ABOUT, YOU KNOW, WHAT SUICIDE IS, HOW TO RECOGNIZE THE WARNING SIGNS OF SUICIDE, AND HOW TO INTERVENE WITH SOMEONE THAT’S DEALING WITH AN ISSUE OR THAT MAY BE IN CRISIS. MICHAELA MOORE, HARRIS IS EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF FINE ARTS FIND LIFE, AN ORGANIZATION AIMED AT PROVIDING AN ACTUAL SPACE FOR OTHER AGENCIES TO REACH YOUNG PEOPLE TO ADDRESS THINGS LIKE MENTAL HEALTH AND SUICIDE. AN ACTIVITY, AN EVENT WHERE TEENS COULD HAVE A GREAT TIME. YOU KNOW, SOMETIMES IT’S LIKE VEGETABLES. YOU KNOW, YOU HAVE TO PUT CHOCOLATE ON VEGETABLES OR, YOU KNOW, MAKE IT FUN. SO THEY DON’T REALIZE THEY’RE RECEIVING INFORMATION THAT IS BENEFICIAL TO THEM. THE ALABAMA DEPARTMENT OF MENTAL HEALTH SAYS THERE HAS BEEN A GREATER AWARENESS ABOUT TEEN SUICIDE SINCE THE START OF THE COVID 19 PANDEMIC IN EARLY 2020. AT THE SAME TIME, THOSE EARLY MONTHS REALLY TOOK A TOLL DURING THE PANDEMIC. WE HAD MANY INDIVIDUALS TO HAVE TO SELF ISOLATE. AND SOME OTHER WARNING SIGNS TO BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR, ACCORDING TO EXPERTS. DEPRESSION AND ANXIETY, LOSING INTEREST IN ACTIVITIES YOU NORMALLY LIKE DOING AND GIVING AWAY YOUR PERSONAL BELONGINGS. LIVE IN BIRMINGHAM

The homicide rate for older U.S. teenagers rose to its highest point in nearly 25 years during the COVID-19 pandemic, and the suicide rate for adults in their early 20s was the worst in more than 50 years, government researchers said Thursday.Video above: COVID-19 pandemic increases awareness about youth suicideThe Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report examined the homicide and suicide rates among 10- to 24-year-olds from 2001 to 2021.The increase is alarming and "reflects a mental health crisis among young people and a need for a number of policy changes," said Dr. Steven Woolf, a Virginia Commonwealth University researcher who studies U.S. death trends and wasn't involved in the CDC report.Experts cited several possible reasons for the increases, including higher rates of depression, limited availability of mental health services and the number of guns in U.S. homes.Guns were used in 54% of suicides and 93% of homicides among the age group in 2021, the most recent year for which statistics were available."Picture a teenager sitting in their bedroom feeling desperate and making a decision, impulsively, to take their own life," Woolf said. If they have access to a gun, "it's game over."Suicide and homicide were the second and third leading causes of death for 10- to 24-year-olds, after a category of accidental deaths that included motor vehicle crashes, falls, drownings and overdoses. Other researchers have grouped the data by the method of death and concluded that guns are now the biggest killer of U.S. children.Earlier this year, Woolf and other researchers looking at CDC data noted dramatic increases in child and adolescent death rates overall at the beginning of the pandemic and found suicide and homicide were essential factors. The report also found:Suicide and homicide death rates remained far higher for older teenagers and young adults than they were for 10- to 14-year-olds.In 2021, there were about 2,900 suicides in youths ages 10 to 19, and 4,200 in 20- to 24-year-olds. About 3,000 homicide deaths were reported in the younger group, and nearly 3,900 in the adults in their early 20s.The homicide death rate jumped from 8.9 deaths per 100,000 teens aged 15 to 19 in 2019 to 12.3 in 2020. It rose to 12.8 deaths per 100,000 in 2021, the highest since 1997, according to CDC data.Homicide deaths became more common than suicide deaths among 15- to 19-year-olds, while suicide was more common in the younger and older age groups. While large increases were seen in homicide rates for young Black and Hispanic people in the U.S., there were no significant increases for their white counterparts, other CDC data shows.Among 20- to 24-year-olds, the homicide death rate jumped 34% from 2019 to 2020 — from 13.4 per 100,000 population to 18 per 100,000. It held stable in 2021, but the suicide rate rose enough in 2021 — to 19.4 per 100,000 — to surpass the homicide rate.Suicide death rates in children and teens were rising before COVID-19, but they jumped up at the beginning of the pandemic. Dr. Madhukar Trivedi, a psychiatrist at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, said the reasons may be hard to pinpoint, but that isolation during COVID-19 lockdowns could be a factor."There is a misperception that if you talk to young people about depression, they'll get depressed. A don't-ask, don't-tell policy for depression is not effective," Trivedi said. "The earlier we can identify the ones who need help, the better chance we'll have at saving lives."

<p>Sunday is the deadline to register for Ohio’s first Vax-2-School scholarship drawing. The program offers Ohio students a chance to win college scholarships if they get vaccinated against COVID-19.</p>
<p>The drawings are for Ohio residents between the ages of 5 and 25 who get vaccinated against the virus. Winners can take home thousands of dollars in college scholarship money.</p>
<p>There are 150 $10,000 scholarships and five $100,000 grant prize scholarships. Scholarships can be used at Ohio universities, colleges and trade schools.</p>
<p>To enter, you must meet these deadlines:</p>
<ul>
<li>Sunday, Nov. 21, 11:59 p.m. – eligible for all drawings.</li>
<li>Sunday, Nov. 28, 11:59 p.m. – eligible for the second drawing (75 $10,000 winners) and the grand-prize drawing.</li>
<li>Wednesday, Dec. 1, 11:59 p.m. – eligible for the grand-prize drawing.</li>
</ul>
<p>Participants can enter online at <a class="Link" href="https://www.ohiovax2school.com">www.ohiovax2school.com</a> or by phone by calling 1-833-4-ASK-ODOH (1-833-427-5634).</p>
<p>One infectious disease specialist said it’s hard to say how much incentive programs move the needle on vaccinations, but anything generating a buzz about the vaccine is a good thing.</p>
<p>“Children also, too, can transmit the virus to people who have not yet been vaccinated,” said Dr. Joseph Gastaldo, Medical Director of Infectious Diseases at OhioHealth. “They could transmit the virus to those who are older where vaccines don't work as well. And also to those with weakened immune systems where vaccines don't work as well. When we talk about herd immunity, when we talk about community immunity, children are part of that community.”</p>

<p>CINCINNATI — The Greater Cincinnati Holiday Market is back in person this weekend after going virtual last year due to COVID-19.</p>
<p>Venita Allen, who owns skincare business lahVdah, has held a booth for 18 years. She’s one of more than 300 vendors taking part this year. Many are local to the Tri-State.</p>
<p>“I went from one small spot to eight big spots,” she said. “Holiday Market kind of put me on the map as people taking me serious as a stay-at-home small business that ended up opening a brick-and-mortar. I would have never had the customer base had I not got my start here.”</p>
<p>Losing the in-person show last year left its mark on vendors.</p>
<p>“We were all just devastated, because this is a huge, it's a big part of our annual holiday business, which for a retail store, the holidays are like 75% of what you do all year,” said Debra Campbell, co-owner of Fleurish Home.</p>
<p>Vendors said it’s about more than making sales.</p>
<p>“You do form this, like, family relationship with the vendors and the customers that come and it just means so much,” said Sarah Cox, who owns local woodworking company Rustic Grains.</p>
<p>The event is being held at the Duke Energy Convention Center from Nov. 12 through Nov. 14. General admission tickets start at $8 when purchased online. Children (ages 12 and under) can enter for free.</p>
<p>“They build up to this all year long,” said Kelly Scott, assistant show manager. “They're restocked, they're ready to go. But it's one of their biggest events of the year.”</p>
<p>You can buy tickets <a class="Link" href="https://cincinnatiholidaymarket.com/">here</a>.</p>

<p>There's more evidence that the pandemic has contributed to another public health crisis — an increase in the obesity rate.</p>
<p>New federal data shows that 16 states have adult obesity rates of 35% or higher. That's an increase from 12 states in 2019 and just nine states in 2018.</p>
<p>The problem has exploded over the last two decades. In 2000, no state had an adult obesity rate of 25%. Today, there are only a handful of areas where the obesity rate is currently below 25%.</p>
<p>The nonpartisan, non-profit group Trust For America's Health has been tracking the issue.</p>
<p>"It's about the design of our neighborhoods and ensuring that neighborhoods have walkable and bikeable paths, that people have the ability to engage in physical activity or access to parks and community centers and gyms," Trust For America's Health CEO and president Nadine Gracia said.</p>
<p>The group says high obesity rates have a systemic, social, and economic impact on the country — and the pandemic has only made those issues worse.</p>
<p>In communities of color, the obesity rates have an even higher impact.</p>
<p>The new data shows that 22 states had adult obesity rates at 35% or higher among Hispanic residents. For Black Americans, 35 states have obesity rates at 35% or higher.</p>
<p>"We see, for example, higher job loss and greater food insecurity in households of color," Garcia said. "Black and Latino households had greater rates of food insecurity (during the pandemic). Their children were in virtual learning as opposed to in-person learning, with less access to school meals."</p>
<p>The report from Trust For America's Health points to larger policy solutions, like increased funding to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's obesity prevention program. Garcia says that the program currently only has enough money to support 16 states.</p>
<p>"We should close tax loopholes and business incentives for unhealthy food advertising, which disproportionately is directed to youth of color — in particular, Black and Latino youth," Garcia said.</p>
<p>The CDC is now providing community-level data on obesity so it can be addressed on a more local level.</p>

Before vaccines were available, every member of a Kansas family got COVID-19. Nearly eight months later, they're still battling the virus and say their lives will never be the same."I thought that because we were a pretty healthy family, that we would handle it pretty well," Amy Diediker said. The Diediker family of five had no idea what was coming. In January, one by one, each contracted COVID-19 and they all got very sick."Every day, it felt like, which fire is the one I need to put out today? Because it felt like there were three or four every day," Diediker said. The symptoms varied. Diediker said she had chest pain and shortness of breath. For 17 days, her husband Ryan was so weak he could barely walk. But she said the worst case, by far, was 10-year-old Vivien."When you're seeing your child in that much pain and with symptoms that severe and the doctors are telling you, 'There's nothing we can do,'" Diediker said. "It was the most hopeless I have ever felt as a parent."The Diedikers are an athletic family. Amy Diediker is an exercise instructor. But she, Vivien, and her son, Owen, are now categorized as COVID-19 long haulers. They still have symptoms — and doctors have very few answers. They're all vaccinated now, even young Vivien, who received special-use permission for the vaccine because she's now considered high risk. Diediker said that she gets emotional about people choosing not to get vaccinated."I wish people could come spend a day, seeing what happened to our lives, seeing all the doctors' appointments that we juggle," she said. "I had a positive test, and seven and a half months later, we are still trying to pick up the pieces. So please, please take the time to go get vaccinated."Diediker also urges people to abide by mask mandates. She said she believes her family contracted the virus after attending a small family gathering without masking. Diediker said it is a decision she will always regret.

<p>CINCINNATI — Four Greater Cincinnati high school football games canceled last week due to the number of COVID-19 quarantined student-athletes.</p>
<p>Three games are canceled this Friday and another contest is already off the schedule for Sept. 3. </p>
<p>These cancellations, or what are considered no contests in Ohio, may only be the beginning this fall season. The reality is a sobering thought after a significant challenge for schools during the 2020-21 school year.</p>
<p>"I don't unfortunately see it changing which stinks," Wyoming High School athletic director Jan Wilking said. "It's going to continue to be a mad shuffle for games and to get everybody back at school and doing the right thing. I wish we were in this for the short run but unfortunately it's looking like another school year of mad shuffling and trying to just piece things together which will be a lot."</p>
<p>The natural reaction during this time of the delta variant is to wonder if history is repeating itself from 2020 when a number of games around Ohio were canceled in the first few weeks.</p>
<p>"No, I do not believe it's a here we go again situation," said Lakota West athletic director Scott Kaufman, who is the Ohio High School Athletic Association board of directors president. "I do believe it's time to reset and go back to some protocols from last year to minimize the number of quarantines that we're going through."</p>

<p>On Wednesday, the National Federation of State High School Athletic Associations announced it has partnered with the NCAA, the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee, the National Athletic Trainers' Association, eight national medical organizations and the U.S. Department of Education to <a class="Link" href="https://twitter.com/KHSAA/status/1430618451496800257">promote COVID-19 vaccination</a> in school-age students ages 12-18.</p>
<p>The District of Columbia, Hawaii and Connecticut are among the state athletic associations with campaigns to promote vaccinations.</p>
<p>The Hawaii High School Athletic Association has delayed its football season to Sept. 24 and is requiring all student-athletes, staff and volunteers to be fully vaccinated.</p>
<p>In Ohio, there are no state mandates regarding vaccinations, masks and social distancing. School districts and local health departments could set their own requirements.</p>
<p>Wilking said the parameters are clear in Wyoming City Schools for students to be able to fully participate in school and interscholastic athletics.</p>
<p>"As far as what we can do to prevent outbreaks and to keep kids in school which is what we all want whether they're being the star of the play or the star of the tennis team; you know vaccinations help," Wilking said. "You don't have to quarantine if you are vaccinated and masking helps."</p>
<p>Kaufman said too many people entered this fall season thinking circumstances were back to normal. Now is the time for teams to look in the mirror and take full responsibility.</p>
<p>"What are you willing to sacrifice in order to save your season?" Kaufman said. "We know the delta variant is more contagious than what we dealt with a year ago. And it's hard to believe that we are dealing with something worse than a year ago. It's a shame we are dealing with it because we have a solution."</p>
<p>If a student-athlete tests positive for COVID-19, that individual has to isolate for 10 days and receive medical clearance to return to play.</p>
<p>If a student-athlete is unmasked and unvaccinated and considered to be a close contact, the quarantine is a minimum of 10 days but that can be reduced to eight days if a negative test occurs after five days.</p>
<p>"We all need to be going back to our protocols and restrictions athletically that we started with last fall," Kaufman said. "Everything that we did last fall was designed to keep the kids healthy, to minimize the possibility of A: infection but B: being quarantined because of a close contact."</p>
<p>The Ohio High School Athletic Association said 16 season openers were canceled statewide last week. </p>
<p>The OHSAA said last week it is discussing policies related to COVID-19 cancellations and how that might impact the Harbin ratings, also known as the computer points playoff system. </p>
<p>Prior to 2020, there was an eight-game minimum in order to qualify for the postseason.</p>
<p>In Kentucky, there were 17 high school football games canceled out of 120 contests scheduled last week, according to the Kentucky High School Athletic Association.</p>
<p>Six games have been canceled this week out of 117 scheduled on the KHSAA website.</p>

</div><figcaption class="Figure-caption" itemprop="caption">The Kentucky High School Athletic Association said 17 football games were canceled due to COVID-19 quarantines out of 120 contests scheduled statewide.</figcaption></figure>
<p>"Schools just send us a report," KHSAA spokesperson Dan White said. "They go through the website and they report that game as a COVID cancellation and they are able to say if the COVID situation is with the home team or if it's with the visitor team."</p>
<p>The result is initially entered as the team with the quarantined student-athletes takes a loss while the opposing team receives the win. There are also <a class="Link" href="https://khsaa.org/08-18-21-updates-and-reminders-on-schedule-change-and-score-reporting/">procedures</a> if both teams are in quarantine.</p>
<p>White said teams may choose to reschedule that canceled game or find other opponents which would change the initial result.</p>
<p>Cancellations involving soccer games and girls volleyball matches are also tracked weekly, White said.</p>
<p>"The (KHSAA) commissioner (Julian Tackett) is always in communication with the schools," White said. "Our COVID-19 guidance is up on the website so schools have been sent that. Obviously, keeping track of the virus as it changes."</p>
<p>Athletic administrators know circumstances change from hour to hour. They are starting to wonder about the winter season, too.</p>
<p>"It concerns me because we're still in summer months and if we don't get this more under control with the help of vaccinations by the time it gets colder and we're indoors, I worry about how many more steps backwards we're going to take," Kaufman said.</p>

A Baltimore restaurant is taking the city's indoor mask mandate one step further and is requiring customers to bring proof of COVID-19 vaccination in order to enter. The policy is plastered on the front door of Silver Queen Cafe — customers ages 12 and up only get in if they have proof they're fully vaccinated.Jason Daniloski, the co-owner of Silver Queen Cafe, said he rather potentially lose his business than lose a life. Daniloski put the new policy in place last week Friday."We just kind of took the plunge. It's a little awkward. I used to be a doorman a long time ago, so it almost feels like you're in the club again checking IDs when you come in," he said.Customers who refuse to show proof or wear a mask indoors will have to wait outside to pick up food or dine at tables out front."Customers have been very supportive, and it was scary because we do need every cent. It's a scary time when you need every cent, and to make up for lost revenue from last year," Daniloski said.Currently, Baltimore City is under a reinstated indoor mask mandate, as COVID-19 cases continue to rise. So far, the city's positivity rate sits at 2.6% while Baltimore has seen a 439% rise in cases within the last four weeks.Daniloski is taking a stance, trying to keep the COVID-19 numbers down, even if it means putting safety over profit."It was just a risk we had to take. I mean, I'd rather lose my business than my life, or my family's life, or anybody else's life," Daniloski said. The owners said the policy will remain in place until cases begin to drop.

A cup of coffee is how many people start the day. While prices have gone up during the pandemic, they could go up again. "In the gas world, you and I would call this price gouging," said Tracy Allen, who's been in the coffee business since the 1980s.Allen runs a company called Brewed Behavior, helping developing countries grow and sell coffee. The world's largest coffee producer is Brazil and it is in a drought. But Allen said that's not the only thing pushing prices."Because of COVID, there was so much downtime, and nobody's working, nothing's moving, and now everybody's gearing back up, there's a shortage of shipping containers," Allen said. With a shortage of shipping containers and coffee beans sitting on foreign docks, the price to ship it here has gone way up."So for me to get a container from Sumatra right now, which is typically $1,000 to $1,500 to get it to the U.S. is now close to $6,000," Allen said.If you pay $10 a pound for coffee at the grocery store, Allen said do not be surprised to see that same coffee selling for $13 to $14 a pound. He also said that he looks for big sellers, such as Starbucks and Dunkin to raise prices, too.The even bigger question is once shipments return to normal, will the price come down?"And then the real question is, how many of those roasters are going to go back and take the price back down once it's up there right?" Allen said."So do you see this price hike as something permanent?" sister station KMBC asked."I'll fall short of saying it's temporary. I wish I knew," Allen said.

A Grain Valley, Missouri, mother talks about losing her daughter to the delta variant of COVID-19.She said she is speaking in hopes of preventing another family from experiencing this pain.Tricia Jones, 45, lived a mile from her mother Debora Carmichael. For two health care workers in Kansas City, fighting the battle against COVID-19 helped them fall in love."My plan today is to propose to my girlfriend who is a nurse in the emergency room here," said Michael Senne, a registered nurse at Saint Luke's Hospital. "I am expecting a flawless proposal and for her to say 'yes.'"Senne got down on one knee on the hospital's rooftop heliport, where he and his girlfriend, registered nurse Sage Smith, watched fireworks together on the Fourth of July."I got some flowers for you. We've been dating for a very long time and I've fallen so very much in love with you. Would you do me the honor of marrying me?" Senne asked."Yes," Smith said, as coworkers cheered.Senne said working in health care and dating someone in the field means there's a lot of uncertainty. And then the COVID-19 pandemic hit."We were at times afraid to even see each other," Senne said. "COVID definitely gave us more time together, which I think really helped us fall deeper in love with each other.""I was a little bit more scared for him because he works in the COVID ICU and being exposed longer," Smith said.Smith said she was actually going to take the day off, but her supervisor, who knew about the surprise, would not let her take it.The couple hopes to set a date for August or September.

A Kansas City, Missouri, man has returned from India where COVID-19 transmission is out of control.Seeing the news reports out of India in recent weeks paints a picture of a country in crisis. The deadly second wave of COVID-19 is spreading out of control.Deepak Kapoor's family is in New Delhi. He said he made the difficult decision to travel there from Kansas City."In India, where the health care system has broken down, the news of somebody being infected is almost like a death sentence that they are going to die," Kapoor said.Kapoor was vaccinated and tested before he went and stayed in his parents' flat his entire two-week stay. Still, he said that death was all around him. He said he heard the screams when the tenant upstairs stopped breathing."The ambulance came to take him to one hospital, there was no bed. Took him to the second hospital, there was no bed, and it took him to the third hospital. By the time he got there, he had passed away," Kapoor said.He said that the situation there is ten times worse than what we've seen reported. Social distancing is impossible. There's a shortage of vaccine, an overwhelmed medical system and the dead are being cremated in the streets. Now that he's back home, he said that he is dealing with the guilt of leaving his family behind. He said he calls them every day."I actually wanted to cry because, because I know they're going through such a hard time there," Kapoor said. "It was guilt. It was like, I'm leaving them back there in that situation, and I'm coming to a place, which is probably one of the best places to be right now in the world and leaving them in the place that's right now the worst place."Kapoor said that he's grateful for all the U.S. is doing to help. He said believes it will take years for the country to recover from this. He said he hopes that by taking every precaution his family will survive.
