More than a year after the bodies of Maggie Murdaugh and her son Paul were discovered on the prominent Lowcountry family's property in Colleton County, South Carolina, charges in the double homicide may be filed as soon as this week.On Tuesday, family members were told disgraced attorney Alex Murdaugh would be charged this week in the murder of his wife and son. Video above: Murdaugh murders investigation: 1 year later Family members were notified by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, as a courtesy, Tuesday morning. John Marvin Murdaugh, Alex Murdaugh's younger brother, told WCIV SLED agents did not tell the family what charges Murdaugh will face but they would be in connection to the double homicide.Alex Murdaugh told authorities from the onset he discovered the bodies of his wife and son after they were shot to death the night of June 7, 2021. Murdaugh was eventually charged with dozens of fraud-related crimes after allegations he stole millions of dollars from his clients and from the family of the former Murdaugh housekeeper, Gloria Satterfield, who died after a fall at the Murdaugh home.Alex Murdaugh's attorney Jim Griffin provided sister station WJCL the following statement:"We have not been advised by anyone associated with law enforcement or the Attorney General's office that Alex will be charged with murder. I am aware that SLED advised the family that they intend to seek murder indictments from a grand jury later this week. We won't have any comment until charges are actually brought against Alex."This is a developing story. Check back for updates.

South Carolina authorities say they took Curtis Edward Smith into custody Tuesday in connection with the shooting earlier this month of prominent South Carolina attorney Alex Murdaugh.Smith, 61, is charged with assisted suicide, assault and battery of a high aggravated nature, pointing and presenting a firearm, distribution of methamphetamine, possession of marijuana, insurance fraud and conspiracy to commit insurance fraud. The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division says Murdaugh told Smith to shoot and kill him.Law enforcement officials also said additional charges in the case are expected and will be announced "at the appropriate time."Murdaugh admitted to the scheme Monday, authorities say. He said he hoped it would lead to Murdaugh's surviving son collecting a $10 million life insurance policy. On Sept. 4, Murdaugh called 911 shortly after 1:30 p.m. to report that he'd been shot on the side of a road in Hampton County, South Carolina.A family spokesperson said Murdaugh pulled off due to a low tire light and that a male driver in a blue pickup truck drove past him. He then came back asking if he was having car trouble and that's when Murdaugh was shot.Murdaugh was airlifted to a hospital in Savannah, Georgia, with what authorities say was a superficial gunshot wound to the head. But the incident report released by the Hampton County Sheriff's Office initially checking the box saying, "No visible injuries."Murdaugh's team pushed back. They released new details about his injuries saying he had entry and exit wounds and his skull was fractured, leading authorities to correct that report now saying there were visible injuries. Murdaugh's family has been the focus of national attention since the brutal, unsolved murders of his wife, Maggie, and 22-year-old son, Paul, this past June. Murdaugh called 911 after finding their bodies, both shot multiple times near the family's hunting lodge. Just one day before Alex Murdaugh said he was shot, the law firm that his family spent decades building announced it had reported to law enforcement and the state bar that Alex had stolen money from the firm. The South Carolina Supreme Court suspended his license.
