The U.S. Coast Guard rescued a man who was bitten by a shark near the Bahamas.

The man was bitten Monday while fishing, the Coast Guard said in a press release.

After getting a call about the incident, a Coast Guard helicopter and crew located the vessel the man was hoisted to safety.

The coast guard reports that the man had a tourniquet on his arm to prevent further blood loss.

He was taken to a hospital in Miami where he is said to be stable.

“This was the best possible outcome to a truly terrifying situation,” said Sean Connett, command duty officer at Coast Guard District Seven. “This individual was fortunate a fellow crew member was able to render aid prior to the Coast Guard's arrival which, allowed for a quick extraction from the vessel.”

The Coast Guard did not say what type of shark bit the man.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — The U.S. Coast Guard is searching for a cruise ship passenger who is missing in the Gulf of Mexico.

Coast Guard officials said Thursday that an airplane is conducting search patterns off the coast of Louisiana.

The Coast Guard says it received a call Wednesday afternoon that a 32-year-old woman had fallen overboard from the Carnival Valor cruise ship about 150 miles (240 kilometers) offshore of Southwest Pass, Louisiana.

A spokesman for south Florida-based Carnival Cruise Line said the woman had jumped from her balcony.

According to the Associated Press, the woman was traveling with her husband, who was being provided support by Carnival’s CARE team.

The Carnival Valor, which sails from New Orleans to Caribbean destinations, can carry nearly 3,000 guests and 1,180 crew members.

The AP reported that the ship arrived Thursday at its homeport of New Orleans after a five-day cruise to Mexico.

A man died Sunday while saving two children from Lake Michigan in Racine, Wisconsin.

The Racine County Sheriff's Office said deputies were called to North Beach about 3:05 p.m. for a water rescue.

Investigators said the man was unaccounted for after he went into the lake to save two boys.

"The children showed that they were in distress, and an adult male relative entered the water to save the children," the sheriff said. "The adult male assisted in the rescue of the young children; however, he did not emerge from the water."

Deputies quickly began to search for the man.

His body was pulled from the lake just after 4 p.m.

Lifesaving efforts were initiated and he was taken to Ascension All Saints Hospital.

That's where doctors pronounced him dead.

The sheriff's office said the family was visiting from Missouri.

The victim was described as a 40-year-old man.

He was identified Monday afternoon as Thomas J. Walker.

The ages of the children were not made public.

They were not injured.

"He was a kind soul and an amazing uncle to his niece and nephews. And how we lost him is a testament to how great an uncle and all-around guy he was. (We) never met a person who didn't like him. He is missed greatly," his family said in a prepared statement released by the sheriff.

The National Weather Service had issued a warning of hazardous water conditions on Lake Michigan Sunday.

It included Racine County beaches.

Life-threatening waves up to 5 feet in height and dangerous currents were possible.

"The sheriff's office commends the heroic actions of the man who assisted in saving the lives of these two young children," Sheriff Christopher Schmaling said. "Our thoughts and prayers are with him, his family, and his loved ones. We also encourage people to take the time to investigate current lake conditions before entering Lake Michigan and take all necessary precautions. This, like the other unfortunate drownings this summer, are tragic, incredibly sad, and preventable."

No other information was available.

The victim is the fourth person to drown at Racine beaches this summer.

The three other victims were children.

A boat from Cuba capsized in the storm-hit Straits of Florida this week, spurring a search in which nine people were still missing Wednesday after 13 were rescued, the U.S. Coast Guard said.

Crews of two Coast Guard cutters were still searching for the missing on Wednesday, the service said.

The boat carrying 22 people capsized at about 8 p.m. Monday after departing Cuba, survivors told the Coast Guard.

Tropical Storm Elsa would have been crossing Cuba east of Havana at the time, and its outer bands would have been affecting the seas.

A bulk carrier ship's crew found people Tuesday afternoon in the water some 26 miles southeast of Key West, reported this to the Coast Guard and rescued some of them, the service said.

A Coast Guard cutter responded to the area, and its small boat crew rescued others from the water, the Coast Guard said. In total, 13 were rescued, according to the service. Fifteen people earlier had been reported rescued.

Survivors told the Coast Guard that nine people — seven males and two females — are missing.

A World War II veteran of the U.S. Coast Guard, the 106-year-old Johnson has seen her share of the nation’s birthdays.

The Olathe, Kansas, resident celebrated this year’s birthday by throwing out the first pitch at Friday night's Kansas City Royals game.

Johnson has been a Kansas resident since 1991, when she moved to the Kansas City area with her husband, who also served during WWII, and their children, according to a U.S. Coast Guard blog post.

It’s become a race against time in the search for 12 missing people from an oil industry platform ship that capsized in the Gulf of Mexico.

Coast Guard divers hope a break in stormy weather will give them an opportunity to reach the overturned ship's hull.

The Coast Guard said before dawn Thursday that they're still trying to work out how to get inside the vessel. Six people were rescued alive and one body was found floating on the water in the continuing search.

One person is dead, six people were rescued and a search for 12 others continues after a commercial boat capsized Tuesday off Louisiana's Port Fourchon in the Gulf of Mexico, according to the U.S. Coast Guard and parish officials.

Despite bad weather conditions, which included 6-to 8-foot waves, the search continued Wednesday.

Coast Guard rescue crews have searched more than 1,440 square miles, which is an area larger than the state of Rhode Island, during a combined search period of nearly 40 hours.

“Our rescue crews have been diligently continuing the search and rescue efforts for the missing people from the capsized vessel,” said Capt. Will Watson, commander of Coast Guard Sector New Orleans. “When it comes to search and rescue, each case is dynamic and no single case is the same as the next. Anytime our Coast Guard crews head out for search and rescue, it is always our hope to safely bring those people back and reunite them with their friends and families.”

“You can’t do this work if you’re not optimistic,” Watson said, when asked about the outlook for those who are still missing. “We’re giving it all we got.”

The Coast Guard received an emergency alert with the boat's position at 4:30 p.m., and good Samaritan crews initially responded, the Coast Guard said in a news release.

The search involved the help of four Coast Guard vessels, a Coast Guard helicopter and Coast Guard plane, in addition to four "good Samaritan vessels," the agency said. Watson said one person's body has been recovered.

Good Samaritan vessels rescued four people from the water, a 154-foot Fast Response Coast Guard Cutter arrived within 30 minutes and rescued one person, and a 45-foot boat from the Coast Guard's Grant Isle station rescued another.

The lift boat, called the Seacor Power, has "legs" that can reach the sea floor so the vessel becomes stationary to better perform oil and gas exploration functions, including lifting people and cargo to and from off-shore rigs. Watson said the company that owns the boat is handling next-of-kin notifications for the dead and missing.

"We are deeply saddened by the news of the vessel capsizing and are working closely with the U.S. Cost Guard and local authorities to support all efforts to locate our valued team members and partners," Seacor Marine said in a statement. "We would like to thank the U.S. Coast Guard and good Samaritan vessels for their immediate response as well as the brave individuals who have further supported our search and rescue efforts. Our hearts and prayers go out to everyone involved."

Watson said the vessel departed Port Fourchon about 1:30 p.m. Tuesday. Distress signals from good Samaritan vessels alerted authorities about the capsized lift boat about three hours later.

KEY WEST, Fla. —

Two people are dead and 10 others are missing after their boat overturned Thursday near the Florida Keys, officials said.

The U.S. Coast Guard responded to a location several miles off Key West around 1 p.m. Crews rescued eight people and pulled two bodies from the water, Petty Officer Jose Hernandez said.

Two Coast Guard cutters and several small boats continued to search the area Thursday evening for the missing passengers, Hernandez said. There was no immediate sign of the overturned boat.

Officials didn't immediately know what type of boat the people had been traveling in or where they had come from.
