[CAPTIONING MADE POSSIBLE BY WLWT-TV] STEVEN: THE SUPPORT FOR DAMAR HAMLIN IS CONTINUES TO POUR IN AS THE BILLS AND BENGALS START PREPARING FOR THEIR NEXT GAME. THE LATEST ON HIS PROGRESS. ALLISON: THERE IS A CHANCE OF SEEING RAIN AND WINTER WEATHER. I WILL SHOW YOU THE TIMELINE. KELLY: PRESIDENT BIDEN CELEBRATES BIPARTISAN WORK TO CELEBRATE FUNDING FOR THE BRENT SPENCE BRIDGE CORRIDOR PROJECT. THE TIMELINE AND WHY SOME BUSINESSES ARE UNHAPPY. >> THIS IS WLWT NEWS 5, LEADING THE WAY WITH BREAKING NEWS. KELLY: WE BEGIN WITH BIG NEWS, ENCOURAGING NEWS. AN UPDATE ON DAMAR HAMLIN. THANK YOU FOR JOINING US. STEVEN: NEWS THAT WE HAVE BEEN WAITING TO GET AND IT CAME IN HOT AND HEAVY. SEE MEDICAL CENTER AND BUFFALO BILLS CONFIRMED SUBSTANTIAL PROGRESS. KELLY: WE WANT TO GET STRAIGHT TO THE HOSPITAL WITH JOHN LONDON. THE WORK OF THE FOLKS AT UC HAS BEEN THE FOCUS OF THE COUNTRY FOR MANY DAYS. JOHN: IT HAS, AND THE INDICATIONS THIS MORNING FROM BOTH THE BUFFALO BILLS AND UC HEALTH ARE ENCOURAGING, MORE SO THAN AT ANY TIME MONDAY NIGHT. ON THE OFFICIAL TEAM PAGE HERE IS WHAT THEY ARE SAYING. -- PER THE PHYSICIANS, DAMAR HAMLIN HAS SHOWN REMARKABLE IMPROVEMENT OVER THE PAST 24 HOURS. WHILE STILL CRITICALLY ILL HE HAS DEMONSTRATED THAT HE IS NEUROLOGICALLY INTACT. HIS LUNGS CONTINUE TO HEAL AND HE IS MAKING STEADY PROGRESS. WE ARE GRATEFUL FOR THE LOVE AND SUPPORT WE HAVE RECEIVED. THAT IS THE MOST ENCOURAGING ASSESSMENT FROM THE ORGANIZATION. UC HEALTH POSTED THE SAME MESSAGE ADDING "WE ARE GRATEFUL FOR THE SUPPORT FROM THE BILLS, BENGALS, AND THE NATION TOWARDS OUR STAFF AND HAMLIN. THE NFL NETWORK REPORTS THAT HE OPENED HIS EYES AND IS RESPONSIVE, GRIPPING THE HANDS OF THOSE CLOSEST TO HIM, ANOTHER POSITIVE SIGN. IT IS NOT KNOWN IF ANY OF THE DOCTORS WILL SPEAK DIRECTLY TO MEDIA AND WE EXPECT TO HEAR FROM THE COACH, SEAN MCDERMOTT, AT SOME POINT. FOR NOW, THE WORDS NEUROLOGICALLY INTACT AND REMARKABLE IMPROVEMENT CERTAINLY STAND OUT AND CARRY A HOPEFULNESS THAT -- MUCH MORE SO THAN WE HAVE SEEN AT ANY POINT THIS WEEK. LIVE AT UC MEDICAL CENTER, JOHN LONDON. STEVEN: SUCH GREAT NEWS AND YOU USE THE TERM NEUROLOGICALLY INTACT AND WE WOULD LIKE TO GET CLARIFICATION OF WHAT THAT MEANS. WHAT IS THE FEELING AROUND THE HOSPITAL. WE HAVE SO MANY PEOPLE COME TO THE HOSPITAL AND LEAVE FLOWERS AND SIT AND PRAY, WHAT IS THE FEELING OUT THERE RIGHT NOW. JOHN: IT IS A FEELING THAT FOLKS ARE FINALLY BEGINNING TO HEAR THE KINDS OF WORDS THAT THEY HOPED TO HEAR IN THE IMMEDIATE AFTERMATH OF THIS. THIS, AS I SAID, IS THE MOST ENCOURAGING READ FROM THE BUFFALO BILLS ORGANIZATION. AND THE FACT THAT UC HEALTH POSTED ON TWITTER ADS RATED -- ADDS GREATER CREDIBILITY THAT THERE HAS BEEN IMPROVEMENT, IMPROVEMENT REFERRED TO AS REMARKABLE OVER THE PAST 24 HOURS. UNTIL WE HEAR DIRECTLY FROM THE DOCTORS, WE WILL HAVE TO TAKE IT AND RUN WITH THIS, WHICH IS GIVING FOLKS HERE A GOOD FEELING. STEVEN: ABSOLUTELY. I KNOW YOU WILL STAY ON TOP OF IT AND GET THOSE ANSWERS. LIVE FROM UC MEDICAL CENTER. A NEW SIGN OUTSIDE IS WISHING HOPE AND HEALING FOR DAMAR HAMLIN AND HIS FAMILY. DANTE MCCALL LIVES ON THE WEST SIDE AND SAID THAT THE COMPANY WANTED TO OFFER VISIBLE SUPPORT AND PRAYERS. MEREDITH STUTZ SPEAKS TO HIM ABOUT HIS MISSION COMING UP TONIGHT AND YOU WILL SEE THAT STORY AT 5:30. NFL LEADERS EXPLAIN HOW THEY PREPARE FOR EVENTS LIKE THIS BUT PRAY THAT IT NEVER DOES. KELLY: THE CHIEF MEDICAL OFFICER DESCRIBING HOW MUCH EMERGENCY PLANNING GOES INTO EACH GAME AND THIS IS UNIQUE. DR. ALLEN SILLS SAYS THAT PREPARATION STARTS MONTHS BEFORE THE SEASON AND IT DETAIL DOWN TO HAND SIGNALS THAT OFFICIALS USED TO INDICATE WHAT INJURY A PLAYER MIGHT BE EXPERIENCING. >> THE 60 MINUTE MEETING IS ONE OF IF NOT THE MOST IMPORTANT THINGS WE DUE TO PREPARE FOR EACH GAME. IT HAPPENS ONE HOUR BEFORE KICKOFF, AND IT IS A GATHERING OF ALL OF THE MEDICAL PERSONNEL AT THE STADIUM FOR BOTH TEAMS AND THE INDEPENDENT MEDICAL PERSONNEL, AND THE GAME REFEREE. KELLY: ANOTHER KEY COMPONENT IS MAKING SURE THAT PLAYERS HAVE QUICK ACCESS TO LIFESAVING EQUIPMENT FROM DEFIBRILLATORS TO ADVANCED MONITORING EQUIPMENT. HE WAS REFERRING TO THE MEETING THAT HAPPENS BEFORE EVERY NFL GAME. IT DOES HAPPEN, JUST TO MAKE SURE THAT THEY ARE PREPARED. STEVEN: TWO CITIES ARE COMING TOGETHER. KELLY: GREATER CINCINNATI AND THE BUFFALO AREA CONTINUE TO LIFT EACH OTHER UP AS DAMAR HAMLIN CONTINUES THE RECOVERY. CINCY SHIRTS SELLING THREE DIFFERENT DESIGNS ON T-SHIRTS AND SWEATSHIRTS HIGHLIGHTING THE NEWFOUND FRIENDSHIP BETWEEN THE BENGALS AND THE BILLS. 100% OF THE PROCEEDS GO TO HAMLIN’S FOUNDATION. >> CINCINNATI HAS SUCH A BIG HEART AND WE ARE SHOWING THE WORLD THAT AND IT IS AN IMPULSE AND KNEE-JERK REACTION THAT WE WANT TO SHOW OUR SUPPORT AND WE WANT TO HELP IN ANY WAY WE CAN. KELLY: IT IS SOLD -- IT HAS SOLD MORE THAN EIGHT THOUSAND SHIRTS RAISING MONEY FOR THE ORGANIZATION. THE CLOUDS BEFORE THE WET WEATHER RETURNS AND WE ARE GETTING CLOSER TO THE WEEKEND. STEVEN: HOW MUCH CAN YOU DO, DO YOU NEED A RAIN JACKET? ALLISON ROGERS WILL SHOW IF IT IS COLD ENOUGH FOR WINTRY WEATHER. ALLISON: THERE IS SOME CHANCE OF WINTRY WEATHER AND WE ARE EXPECTING TO SEE SOME RAINFALL. STILL QUIET AND DRY. NOT MUCH HAPPENING ON THE RADAR BUT WORKING UP TOWARDS THE CHICAGO AREA AND INDIANA SOME SNOW STAYING WITH THE LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM MAKING ITS WAY SLOWLY BUT SURELY TO THE EAST. AS IT DOES THERE IS THE POTENTIAL TO SEE SOME RAIN MOVING AS FAR SOUTH AS GREATER CINCINNATI AND NORTHERN KENTUCKY. AND EVEN THE POTENTIAL FOR WINTER WEATHER WORKING ITS WAY IN, ESPECIALLY FOR COMMUNITIES NORTH OF 74 AND INDIANA. THE FURTHER NORTH YOU LIVE A BETTER CHANCE YOU HAVE OF SEEING SNOW FLURRIES MIXING IN WITH SOME OF THE RAINFALL. TEMPERATURES SITTING AROUND 42 IN CINCINNATI. CHILLY FOR SURE. DEALING LIKE 36 WHEN YOU FACTOR IN THE WIND. YOU HAVE TO PULL THE COAT OUT AGAIN AS YOU HEAD OUT THE DOOR. HOW LONG YOU WILL NEED I

According to the fire department, the fire was difficult to battle because of the cold and how difficult it was for crews to access the flames.

Tom Lakamp, operations chief with Cincinnati Fire Department, said when fire crews arrived, there was heavy fire in the back of the building.

"We tried to make an interior attack from multiple sides and just kept getting pushed out by heat,' Lakamp said.

Lakamp said that is when the fire department shifted to an defensive attack.

The owner of the funeral home and two people who lived on the second floor were inside when the fire started.

The owner said he was working when the blaze broke out.

"He did a great job of getting everybody out of the building before we arrived," Lakamp said.

No one was injured in the fire, Lakamp said.

Lakamp said the building is a complete loss. The building is expected to be torn down sometime Saturday. No neighboring properties were damaged.

The fire department is asking people to avoid the area. Fire crews had to use a lot of water to battle the blaze and that water could freeze, causing for slippery conditions.

Lakamp also said the community should reach out and support the owner of the funeral home, along with the two people who lived on the second floor.

"You know, this business owner has been in this community for a really long time," Lakamp said.

Right now, there is no word on what started the fire.

CINCINNATI — Officials with the Metropolitan Sewer District and the Cincinnati Fire Department are investigating a potential gasoline spill into the sewer system in West Price Hill, the two agencies announced over the weekend.

According to a news release, investigators believe the leak occurred on Dec. 24, potentially from a gas station. As part of the investigation, a gas station at Eighth Street and Pedretti Avenue closed and emptied its underground storage tanks.

Investigators believe as many as 360 gallons of gasoline may have entered the sewer system. CFD became aware of the potential leak after nearby residents reported odors in their homes.

MSD began flushing the sewers with water on Dec. 24 in an attempt to dilute the spill and suppress the odor.

MSD officials advised residents living on Cappel Drive and Carnation and Hermosa avenues to take the following precautions:

Limit ignition sources such as candles and any other flaming devices

Run water in basement floor drains to reduce fumes and odors in the home (for drains without traps, they should be plugged to prevent odors)

Crack windows in the home to reduce fumes
