Two couples decided to make a special day even more special at Churchill Downs on the eve of the 148th Kentucky Derby.

It happened Friday on Kentucky Oaks Day, hours before the fillies took to the track. Crowds of visitors had already made their way to Churchill Downs to begin their Oaks celebrations.

One of the engagements happened next to the Barbaro statue. You can see the man get down on one knee and his girlfriend surprised by what's happening.

Then out comes the engagement ring, and she excitedly accepts. The two share a kiss with a small crowd around them cheering.

Then you can see the couple being congratulated and posing for photos.

The other happened in the Plaza area at the racetrack. The video starts out with the lovely couple — Jessica and Drew of Louisville — sharing a kiss and then Drew getting down on one knee.

Then out comes the ring and plenty of shock from his soon-to-be fiancé. Jessica turns away for a moment, still surprised, all while people around them cheer.

Finally, Jessica accepts and the two share another kiss in front of their family and friends.

Love is in the air at Churchill Downs during Derby Week!

LOUISVILLE, Ky. —

Two more horses have died during races at Kentucky's Churchill Downs within the last 24 hours.

Kimberly Dream sustained a significant injury during the first race on Saturday.

According to Churchill Downs spokesperson Darren Rogers, the filly suffered from an injury to her left front leg, similar to Lost in Limbo's injury during Friday's seventh race.

Lost in Limbo was euthanized following that race.

Track officials brought in a doctor from the University of Kentucky to examine the conditions of the track to see if it is affecting the thoroughbreds while racing.

So far, nothing has been found unusual about the track.

"We are troubled by this recent string of fatalities," Churchill Downs said in a statement on Saturday. "It is extremely inconsistent with the outcomes we have experienced over the years, with the reputation we have developed over the decades, and with the expectations we set for ourselves and owe our fans. We are committed to doing this important work and updating the public with our developments."

Rogers said there have been 12 horses who have died at Churchill Downs since the stable area reopened for training on March 30.

Before the Spring meet officially started, a Kentucky Derby contender, Wild On Ice, was hurt during a training session at the track.

The 3-year-old colt was evaluated at the Equine Medical Center and was then taken to a surgical facility in Lexington for further evaluation. The injury ended up being too severe, and the horse had to be euthanized.

Seven horses died over 10 days during the Spring Meet at Churchill Downs.

Two of those happened on Derby Day, which was Saturday, May 6.

Another horse was euthanized at Churchill Downs Friday afternoon.

According to spokesperson Darren Rodgers, Lost in Limbo suffered a significant injury to his left front leg near the finish of Friday's seventh race.

Dr. Will Farmer, Equine Medical Director, determined that the injury was unrecoverable, and the horse was humanely euthanized.

This is the 10th horse death at Churchill Downs since start of the Spring Meet less than a month ago.

Three-year-old filly, Swanson Lake, trained by Michael McCarthy was euthanized after being vanned off with a significant injury during a race on Sunday.

Before Swanson Lake's death, eight other horses died at Churchill Downs during the course of the month.

Another horse has died at the home of the Kentucky Derby after suffering an injury.According to Churchill Downs spokesperson, Darren Rogers, Rio Moon broke his leg earlier on Sunday.The horse was at the finish line, in the sixth race of the day when the injury occurred and had to be euthanized.The horse was a 3-year-old colt, trained by Dale Romans of Louisville.This comes after seven horses died over 10 days during the Spring Meet at Churchill Downs, which is home to the Kentucky Derby.Two of those happened Saturday, on Derby Day. Seven-time Kentucky Derby-winning Bob Baffert will be allowed to compete in the 2021 Breeders' Cup, but the horses will be under intense scrutiny.

All of Baffert's horses will be required to undergo enhanced out-of-competition testing as well as pre-race and post-race testing. This will be in addition to other protocols in order to participate.

This is all in an effort "to provide a more targeted layer of accountability," according to a statement from the Breeders' Cup.

Baffert trained the 2020 Kentucky Derby champion Medina Spirit, who failed a drug test.

Since then, Baffert has faced a roller coaster of consequences including being suspended from the New York Racing Association after which he sued to be reinstated. A New York federal judge eventually overturned the NYRA's ruling.

Then, on Sept. 10, the New York Racing Association charged Bob Baffert with detrimental conduct and scheduled a hearing for him to respond to those allegations.

That all followed Churchill Downs suspending Baffert from competition at the home of the Derby for a period of two years.

"Mr. Baffert’s record of testing failures threatens public confidence in thoroughbred racing and the reputation of the Kentucky Derby," said Churchill Downs CEO Bill Carstanjen at the time. "Given these repeated failures over the last year, including the increasingly extraordinary explanations, we firmly believe that asserting our rights to impose these measures is our duty and responsibility."

America’s longest continuously held sporting event returns to its traditional spot on the calendar — the first Saturday in May. The 147th edition comes less than eight months after its run without spectators last September because of COVID-19, making it the shortest time between Derbies in history.

The horses

Each year, 20 horses compete in the Kentucky Derby.

Essential Quality is the early 2-1 favorite on Saturday and has the bona fides. The striking gray colt was last year's 2-year-old champion. He comes in undefeated in five career starts. The last unbeaten colt to win the Derby was Justify in 2018, and he went on to sweep the Triple Crown.

Essential Quality's jockey, Luis Saez, is seeking his first Derby win after crossing the finish line first aboard Maximum Security in 2019 only to have his colt disqualified.

“Essential Quality is a deserving favorite,” trainer Todd Pletcher said, “but I think it's a wide-open race.”

Besides Essential Quality, the other undefeated horses in the field are 5-1 Rock Your World and 50-1 Helium, both 3-0. Rock Your World won his first two starts on turf before switching to dirt and winning the Santa Anita Derby.

Changes due to COVID-19

Attendance of about 45,000 is expected at the Derby, about 100,000 less than usual.

Churchill Downs limited seating to 40-50%, up to 60% in certain private areas that allow social distancing.

Churchill Downs officials anticipate about 50,000 people for Oaks and Derby.

Masks will be mandatory — which should come as no surprise with a statewide mandate still in place.

Churchill Downs says it has implemented a "Compliance Ambassador program" to drive awareness and adoption of public safety measures. Signage is placed throughout the facility, including the Infield, to remind guests to wear masks and practice social distancing.

In addition, food and drinks are all-inclusive to lessen long lines and separate payments for every transaction.
