A LOUISIANA NATIVE GOT HER DIPLOMA AND A PERSONAL CEREMONY AT TOURO TODAY. WELL, SHE MISSED HER ORIGINAL GRADUATION DUE TO A DEVASTATING CAR CRASH THE NIGHT BEFORE. WDSU REPORTER ELI BRAND SPOKE WITH HER AND SHARES HOW SHE WAS ABLE TO OVERCOME ADVERSITY. ELI YEAH, DARYL AND GINA. IT’S A MAJOR ADVERSITY THAT SHE IS STILL FACING. MACKENZIE MEYER LOST ALL FILLING IN HER LEGS AND WAS INTUBATED ALL THE NIGHT BEFORE SHE WAS SET TO GRADUATE WITH A NURSING DEGREE FROM LOUISIANA TECH. TODAY SHE GOT THAT GRADUATION AND INSPIRED EVERYONE IN ATTENDANCE. I NOW DECLARE YOU TO BE ASSOCIATE OF SCIENCE IN NURSING. ONE OF 1037 GRADUATES FROM THE 2023 CLASS AT LOUISIANA TECH, BUT A SPECIAL ONE, MACKENZIE MEYER FACED ADVERSITY MANY CAN’T DREAM OF, ON TOP OF THE DEVASTATING CAR CRASH SHE FACED AND BEAT A FORM OF BRAIN CANCER. AS A YOUNG CHILD. FRIENDS AND FAMILY OF MEYER SAY SHE GOT HERE THROUGH DETERMINATION AND A STRONG WILL, BUT FOR HER IT’S ALL JUST PART OF MOVING ALONG ON HER PERSONAL JOURNEY. IT HASN’T BEEN AN EASY ONE BY ANY MEANS, BUT I’VE MADE IT WORK, YOU KNOW, LIKE EACH DAY YOU JUST KEEP PUSHING AND PUSHING AND I GET STRONG AND STRONG. AND HERE I AM. AND HERE SHE IS AN INSPIRATION THAT HER DOCTORS SAY HEALED QUICKER THAN MOST AT ALL BECAUSE OF A WILL. THEY SAY IS SPECIAL. THIS IS WHAT WE DO IT FOR. IT’S FOR THESE VICTORIES IN PATIENTS LIKE HER THAT ARE SO INSPIRED AND INSPIRE US AND FILL OUR SOULS TO MAKES IT VERY GOOD FOR US AS WELL. AND HERE ARE PICTURES OF THAT HARD WORK FROM NO FILLING IN HER LEGS TO UP AND ABOUT WITH SOME HELP. MEYER SAYS SHE’S NOT DONE YET AND NOW WANTS TO WALK ON HER OWN AGAIN. THE NEXT PART OF HER UNBELIEVABLE JOURNEY. ONE SHE SAYS WILL COME SOON. EVENTUALLY. I JUST WANT TO GET BACK TO WHERE I HAD ORIGINALLY HAD ALL MY PLANS. I GET BACK TO WHERE I CAN BE A PICU NURSE AND BE ABLE TO LIVE OUT MY CAREER AND HOPEFULLY ONE DAY TRAVEL AND JUST DO ALL THE THINGS I WOULD HAVE DONE IF THIS ACCIDENT WOULDN’T HAVE HAPPENED. THE GOAL NO ONE IN THIS ROOM. DOUBTS WILL HAPPEN. BUT UNTIL THEN, MEYER WILL ENJOY HER NEW DIPLOMA WITH A CAP TOSS AND A MOVE TO THE FUTURE. LOUISIANA SENATOR BILL CASSIDY ALSO ATTENDED THE CEREMONY TODAY AS THE COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER. HE SAYS THIS WILL BE ONE OF THE HIGHLIGHTS OF HI

MacKenzie Maier graduated from Louisiana Tech University in a personal ceremony at Touro, a community-based healthcare hospital in New Orleans, on Friday afternoon. And she did it all just weeks after being in a devastating car crash that left her with spinal cord injuries and more.Maier's crash happened just one day before her original graduation ceremony was scheduled.“It hasn’t been an easy one, by any means, but I’ve made it work. You know, each day you keep pushing and pushing, and I get stronger and stronger, and here I am," Maier said of what her journey has been like.Maier's doctors said her determination and hard work are contributing to her recovery. She has even been able to get in some steps with some assistance. Her goal now is to be able to walk on her own and go on to do her dream job of being a pediatric intensive care unit nurse.“This is what we do it for; it’s for these victories and patients like her, that are so inspired and inspire us, fill our souls too. Makes it very good for us as well," said Susi Folse, Maier's physician. This isn't the first adversity Maier has faced in her life. She also faced and beat a form of brain cancer as a child. She says she isn't done yet either and looks forward to the future.“Eventually, I just want to get back to where I originally had on my plans. Get back to where I can be a PICU nurse and be able to live out my career and hopefully one day travel and just do all the things I would have done if this accident wouldn’t have happened," said Maier.Louisiana Sen. Bill Cassidy also attended the graduation as the commencement speaker. He says Maier shows the strength of the people of Louisiana.

RIGHT NOW - THE UNIVERSITY OF GEORGIA - IS IN MOURNING. JUST A FEW HOURS AFTER THE GEORGIA BULLDOGS CELEBRATED THEIR NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP WIN WITH A PARADE IN ATHENS - OFFENSIVE LINEMAN DEVIN WILLOCK AND RECRUITING STAFFER CHANDLER LECROY - WERE KILLED IN A CAR CRASH. AS BULLDOG NATION GRIEVES, ONE FAN AND HIS GRANDSON ARE SHARING THE INTERACTION THEY HAD WITH WILLOCK - HOURS BEFORE THE WRECK. AS OUR ANDY COLE REPORTS -- IT'S AN ENCOUNTER THAT HAS CHANGED LIVES. AFTER ATTENDING THE CHAMPIONSHIP CELEBRATION FOR GEORGIA'S BACK- TO-BACK NATIONAL TITLES SATURDAY IN ATHENS... &lt;&gt; "CAMDYN STARTED TO GET A LITTLE HANGRY, AND WE WERE LOOKING FOR A PLACE TO KINDA STOP." SAM KRAMER AND HIS SEVEN-YEAR- OLD GRANDSON CAMDYN STOPPED TO EAT BEFORE HEADING HOME TO CARTERSVILLE. &lt;&gt; "ACTUALLY HAD JUST SAT DOWN TO GET READY TO ORDER AND WE NOTICED KIND OF A COMMOTION, BUT WE NOTICED SOME FOLKS THAT HAD STARTED TO GATHER ON THE LEFT SIDE WHERE WE WERE SITTING.//AS SOON AS I TURNED MY HEAD AND LOOKED, I SAW WHO IT WAS." IT WAS REDSHIRT SOPHOMORE DEVIN WILLOCK. AND AS A LIFELONG GEORGIA FAN... KRAMER KNEW HE HAD TO SAY HI. &lt;&gt; "I JUST KINDA GAVE HIM KIND OF A FIST BUMP. I SAID "HEY DEVIN, CONGRATS WITH EVERYTHING THAT'S GOING ON." HE TURNED AND SAW CAMDYN SITTING THERE AND CAMDYN WAS KINDA WIDE-EYE LOOKING AT HIM." AFTER CHATTING FOR A BIT... KRAMER SAID IT WAS HARD FOR CAMDYN NOT TO NOTICE HIS CHAMPIONSHIP RING. &lt;&gt; I REMEMBER I JUST TOLD CAMDYN 'HEY, YOU'VE GOT ONE. BUT HE'S GOT THE REAL DEAL,' AND SO DEVIN, WITHOUT EVEN STOPPING OR FLINCHING, TOOK THE RING OFF AND GAVE IT TO CAMDYN AND SAID, 'I'D LOVE TO SEE WHAT YOU LOOK LIKE IN THE RING.' KRAMER SAID THE MINUTES-LONG MEETING FELT LIKE HOURS TO CAMDYN. &lt;&gt; "WHAT REALLY STRUCK ME WAS JUST THE WAY THAT HE EMBRACED BEING WITH CAMDYN." HE SNAPPED A FEW PICS OF THE ENCOUNTER AND POSTED THEM TO TWITTER. WILLOCK SAW IT AND RETWEETED IT WITH THREE RED HEARTS - HIS FINAL TWEET. THEN, HOURS LATER, TRAGEDY. ATHENS-CLARKE COUNTY POLICE SAY IT WAS JUST BEFORE 3 A.M. SUNDAY THAT THE SUV HE WAS A PASSENGER IN SLAMMED INTO TWO POWER POLES AND TREES BEFORE CRASHING INTO AN APARTMENT. THAT ACCIDENT KILLED WILLOCK AND THE DRIVER -- FOOTBALL STAFFER CHANDLER LECROY. THE ATHENS BANNER- HERALD REPORTS STAR OFFENSIVE TACKLE WARREN MCCLENDON WAS ALSO IN THE CAR. HE HAS MINOR INJURIES WHILE ANOTHER PASSENGER IS IN SERIOUS CONDITION. &lt;&gt; REPORTER: "IF YOU HAD TO TALK TO DEVIN'S FAMILY RIGHT NOW, WHAT WOULD YOU SAY?" KRAMER: "MY HEART IS BROKEN FOR THEM.//I JUST WANT YOU TO KNOW THAT YOU RAISED AN OUTSTANDING YOUNG MAN AND HE WILL BE MISSED." A CHANCE ENCOUNTER THAT WON'T SOON BE FORGOTTEN. ANDY COLE. WJCL 22 NEW

As The University of Georgia community mourns the loss of a player and staffer killed in an early morning car crash, one fan and his grandson are grateful to have had one of the last interactions with redshirt sophomore Devin Willock. After attending the championship celebration for Georgia's back-to-back national titles Saturday in Athens, Sam Kramer and his 7-year-old grandson Camdyn stopped to eat before heading home to Cartersville."Actually, had just sat down to get ready to order and we noticed kind of a commotion, but we noticed some folks that had started to gather on the left side where we were sitting. As soon as I turned my head and looked, I saw who it was," Kramer told sister station WJCL.It was Willock. And as a lifelong Georgia fan, Kramer knew he had to say hi."I just kinda gave him kind of a fist bump. I said, 'Hey Devin, congrats with everything that's going on.' He turned and saw Camdyn sitting there, and Camdyn was kinda wide-eyed looking at him."After chatting for a bit, Kramer said it was hard for Camdyn not to notice his championship ring. "I remember I just told Camdyn, 'Hey, you've got one. But he's got the real deal.' And so Devin, without even stopping or flinching, took the ring off and gave it to Camdyn and said, 'I'd love to see what you look like in the ring,'" Kramer said.He snapped a few pics of the encounter and posted them to Twitter. Willock saw it and retweeted it with three red hearts – his final tweet. Then, hours later, tragedy struck.Athens-Clarke County Police said it was just before 3 a.m. Sunday that the SUV he was a passenger in slammed into two power poles and trees before crashing into an apartment. That accident killed Willock and the driver, football staffer Chandler LeCroy. The Athens Banner-Herald reports star offensive tackle Warren McClendon was also in the car. He has minor injuries while another passenger is in serious condition. "My heart is broken for them," Kramer said of Willock's family. "I just want you to know that you raised an outstanding young man and he will be missed."

The last of the escaped monkeys from the crash of a truck towing a trailer load of 100 of the animals was accounted for by late Saturday, a day after the pickup collided with a dump truck on a Pennsylvania highway, authorities said.Several monkeys had escaped following Friday’s collision, Pennsylvania State Police said. But only one had remained unaccounted for as of Saturday morning, prompting the Pennsylvania Game Commission and other agencies to launch a search for it amid frigid weather.Kristen Nordlund, a spokesperson with the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said in an email Saturday evening that all 100 of the cynomolgus macaque monkeys had since been accounted for. Three were dead after being euthanized. The email did not elaborate on why the three were euthanized or how all came to be accounted for. But Nordlund said those euthanized were done so humanely according to American Veterinary Medical Association guidelines. The shipment of monkeys was en route to a CDC-approved quarantine facility after arriving Friday morning at New York’s Kennedy Airport from Mauritius, an Indian Ocean island nation, police said. The Atlanta-based CDC said the agency was providing “technical assistance” to state police in Pennsylvania. The collision occured Friday on a state highway near an Interstate 80 exit in Pennsylvania’s Montour County, Trooper Andrea Pelachick told The Daily Item newspaper of Sunbury. The location of the quarantine facility and the type of research for which the monkeys were apparently destined weren’t clear, but cynomolgus monkeys are often used in medical studies. A 2015 paper posted on the website of the National Center for Biotechnology Information referred to them as the most widely used primate in preclinical toxicology studies.Earlier, police had earlier urged people not to look for or capture any monkey, with troopers tweeting: “Anyone who sees or locates the monkey is asked not to approach, attempt to catch, or come in contact with the monkey. Please call 911 immediately.”Trooper Lauren Lesher had said the concern was “due to it not being a domesticated animal and them being in an unknown territory. It is hard to say how they would react to a human approaching them.”Lesher said state police secured the scene for the Pennsylvania Department of Health and the CDC.The drivers of the trucks weren’t harmed and a passenger was transported to a medical center for treatment of suspected minor injuries, according to the state police’s crash report.A crash witness, Michelle Fallon, told the Press Enterprise newspaper of Bloomsburg that she spoke with the pickup driver and a passenger after the crash. The driver appeared to be disoriented, and the passenger thought he might have injured his legs, she said.Crates littered the road Friday as troopers searched for monkeys, rifles in hand. Valley Township firefighters used thermal imaging to try to locate the animals, and a helicopter also assisted, the Press Enterprise newspaper of Bloomsburg reported. The pickup was heading west on I-80 when it got off at the Danville exit and then immediately tried to get back on, driving across the other lane, the newspaper reported.Fallon told the Press Enterprise that she was behind the pickup when it was hit on the passenger side by the dump truck, tearing off the front panel of the trailer and sending more than a dozen crates tumbling out.She and another motorist who stopped to help were standing near the scene when the other driver said he thought he saw a cat run across the road, Fallon said.Fallon peeked into a crate and saw a small monkey looking back at her, she told the newspaper.“They’re monkeys,” she told the other motorist.

<p>The last of the escaped monkeys from the crash of a truck towing a trailer load of 100 of the animals was accounted for by late Saturday, a day after the pickup collided with a dump truck on a Pennsylvania highway, authorities said.</p>

<p><!-- article/blocks/side-floater --></p>
<p>Several monkeys had escaped following Friday’s collision, Pennsylvania State Police said. But only one had remained unaccounted for as of Saturday morning, prompting the Pennsylvania Game Commission and other agencies to launch a search for it amid frigid weather.</p>
<p>Kristen Nordlund, a spokesperson with the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said in an email Saturday evening that all 100 of the cynomolgus macaque monkeys had since been accounted for. Three were dead after being euthanized.</p>
<p>The email did not elaborate on why the three were euthanized or how all came to be accounted for. But Nordlund said those euthanized were done so humanely according to American Veterinary Medical Association guidelines.</p>
<p>The shipment of monkeys was en route to a CDC-approved quarantine facility after arriving Friday morning at New York’s Kennedy Airport from Mauritius, an Indian Ocean island nation, police said. The Atlanta-based CDC said the agency was providing “technical assistance” to state police in Pennsylvania.</p>
<p>The collision occured Friday on a state highway near an Interstate 80 exit in Pennsylvania’s Montour County, Trooper Andrea Pelachick told The Daily Item newspaper of Sunbury.</p>
<p>The location of the quarantine facility and the type of research for which the monkeys were apparently destined weren’t clear, but cynomolgus monkeys are often used in medical studies. A 2015 paper posted on the website of the National Center for Biotechnology Information referred to them as the most widely used primate in preclinical toxicology studies.</p>
<p>Earlier, police had earlier urged people not to look for or capture any monkey, with troopers tweeting: “Anyone who sees or locates the monkey is asked not to approach, attempt to catch, or come in contact with the monkey. Please call 911 immediately.”</p>
<p>Trooper Lauren Lesher had said the concern was “due to it not being a domesticated animal and them being in an unknown territory. It is hard to say how they would react to a human approaching them.”</p>

<p>A North Carolina community is heartbroken after a police trooper died in a tragic car crash Monday night.</p>
<p>Trooper John Horton was pronounced dead at a Spartanburg hospital after suffering injuries in a crash involving a police cruiser driven by his brother, Trooper James Horton.</p>
<p>A motorcyclist that John Horton had pulled over also died in the collision.</p>
<p>"He's one of the greatest men I ever met," said James Lovelace, a family friend of the Hortons.</p>
<p>Lovelace arrived on the scene after hearing the crash just outside his home in Rutherford County.</p>
<p>"I knew just as soon as I seen him who it was," Lovelace said. "He's gone. All his kids. His wife. Why couldn't they have picked somebody else?"</p>
<p>Some in the area came by Tuesday to place markers at the scene. Others came by to pay their respects to the men who died there.</p>
<p>Friends say James Horton — who goes by Nick — was inspired to go into law enforcement because of his older brother's dedication.</p>
<p>"It's probably like a bad dream to him this morning. Like a bad dream you just can't get out of," family friend Anthony Smith said.</p>
<p>Colonel Freddy L. Johnson Jr., the commander of the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, released a statement honoring the fallen trooper.</p>
<p>"Our hearts are broken with the loss of our friend and our brother, Trooper John Horton. For all involved in this tragic event the coming days will undoubtedly be difficult, but we are committed to stand alongside with them with our thoughts, prayers, and unwavering support," Johnson's statement read.</p>
<p>Back the Blue NC told <a class="Link" href="https://www.cnn.com/2022/01/04/us/north-carolina-state-trooper-john-horton-dies-after-hit-by-brother-trnd/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">CNN</a> that the organization started a <a class="Link" href="https://www.gofundme.com/f/benefit-for-family-of-trooper-john-horton?utm_campaign=p_cp+share-sheet&amp;utm_medium=copy_link_all&amp;utm_source=customer" target="_blank" rel="noopener">GoFundMe </a>to assist the family with funeral costs.</p>

<p>WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — A driver in West Palm Beach survived a <a class="Link" href="https://www.wptv.com/news/region-c-palm-beach-county/west-palm-beach/violent-crash-caught-on-camera-in-west-palm-beach" target="_blank" rel="noopener">violent car crash</a> without serious injuries late last month.</p>
<p>The West Palm Beach Police Department posted a video of the crash on its Facebook page Thursday.</p>
<p>The agency released little information related to the incident.</p>
<p>The video, which has a timestamp of Wednesday at 1:51 a.m., shows a car driving fast on Flagler Drive near Eighth Street.</p>
<p>Video shows that multiple police vehicles were parked along the road on the opposite side of the fast-moving car.</p>
<p>As the car passed officers, it smashed head-on into a light pole and burst into flames.</p>
<p>"All of a sudden, I hear a boom, and I looked out of my window," witness John Piscr said.</p>
<p><span class="VideoEnhancement" data-video-disable-history=""></p>
<p>Violent crash caught on camera in West Palm Beach</p>
<p></span></p>
<p>Piscr looked out his window from a building across the street from the crash.</p>
<p>"And all of a sudden I see a fire, I see cop cars, I see the cops come up with fire extinguishers to put out the fire and drag the driver out of the car," he said.</p>
<p>Piscr said after living in the building for five years, he often sees people traveling fast along Flagler Drive and all too often crashing.</p>
<p>"People have hit other light poles down here. People just fly through the curve, and they lose control. So it's happened before," he said.</p>
<p>The video shows officers responding to the wreck and later dragging the driver, whose name was not released, away from the crash.</p>
<p>"Just shocked, amazed, and thanks to God that everyone was OK, especially my officers because they were right there. In one fell swoop, I could've been at a loss of four officers," assistant chief of police Tameca West said.</p>
<p>West said the video is a teachable moment.</p>
<p>"Thankfully everyone is fine. This vehicle missed several officers who were standing nearby!" the department posted on its <a class="Link" href="https://www.facebook.com/westpalmbeachpolice/videos/469360227720140" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Facebook</a> page with the video.</p>

Video above: Car data recorder will aid in Woods crash probeTiger Woods was moved Thursday to another Los Angeles hospital after undergoing surgery to his right leg after being badly injured in a car crash.Harbor-UCLA Medical Center said Woods was transferred to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center for “continuing orthopedic care and recovery." The hospital didn't provide any other details, saying it was respecting patient confidentiality. “On behalf of our staff, it was an honor to provide orthopedic trauma care to one of our generation’s greatest athletes," Dr. Anish Mahajan, Harbor-UCLA's chief medical officer, said in a statement.Woods was hurt Tuesday when a 2021 Genesis SUV he was driving on a downhill stretch of road struck a raised median in a coastal Los Angeles suburb, crossed into oncoming lanes and flipped several times.Mahajan earlier said Woods shattered the tibia and fibula bones of his lower right leg in multiple locations. Those injuries were stabilized with a rod in the tibia. Additional injuries to the bones in the foot and ankle required screws and pins, Mahajan said in the statement released on Woods’ Twitter account late Tuesday night.Woods was wearing a seatbelt and there wasn't any evidence that he was impaired by drugs or alcohol, Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva said after the crash. However, the crash investigation continues.Harbor-UCLA Medical Center is a Level 1 trauma center, meaning it is qualified to provide the most comprehensive surgical and other care for such injuries. Cedars-Sinai has a renowned Sports Medicine Institute that has catered to professional athletes and a rehabilitation program for sports-related and orthopedic injuries. The wreck happened on the border between the communities of Rolling Hills Estates and Rancho Palos Verdes. The county supervisor who represents the area has requested a safety review of the roadway, where cars are known to gain speed because of the steep grade and authorities have said wrecks are common. In 2017, Woods was arrested on a DUI charge when Florida police found him asleep behind the wheel of his car parked awkwardly on the side of the road, with its engine still running, two flat tires and a blinker flashing.Woods said he had an unexpected reaction to pain medication. He eventually pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of reckless driving. Three weeks after the arrest, he entered a clinic for help dealing with prescription medication and a sleep disorder. The crash this week was the latest setback for Woods, who has won 15 major championships and a record-tying 82 victories on the PGA Tour. He is among the world’s most recognizable sports figures, and at 45, even with a reduced schedule from nine previous surgeries, remains golf’s biggest draw.He was in Los Angeles over the weekend as the tournament host of the Genesis Invitational at Riviera Country Club. Monday and Tuesday had been set aside for him to give golf tips to celebrities on Discovery-owned GOLFTV.

Tiger Woods has given his first interview since he was involved in a massive car crash in February, discussing his rehab and physical therapy with Golf Digest. The golfing legend was seriously injured after the Genesis SUV he was driving veered off the road about 26 miles southwest of downtown Los Angeles around 7 a.m. on Feb. 23. Woods suffered serious leg injuries as a result of the accident and is currently in rehab."I understand more of the rehab processes because of my past injuries, but this was more painful than anything I have ever experienced," he told Golf Digest.Woods did not comment when asked about his hopes of playing golf again."My physical therapy has been keeping me busy. I do my routines every day and am focused on my No. 1 goal right now: walking on my own. Taking it one step at a time," he told Golf Digest. The 45-year-old golfer had been rushed to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center after the high-speed rollover crash. Woods suffered comminuted open fractures that affected his right tibia and fibula, which are the two long bones directly under the knee. After the crash, investigators said there was no reason to believe Woods had been operating the vehicle while impaired by alcohol or drugs but rather crashed while driving at an "unsafe speed for road conditions," according to a police report. The 22-page crash scene investigation report by the California Highway Patrol further stated that Woods was "acting in a manner consistent with someone suffering from shock due to having been involved in a major traffic collision," after the incident.Woods' right leg "suffered traumatic injuries" and what's "still unclear is whether additional procedures will be necessary, or if Woods can expect to regain full mobility and strength in his leg," according to Golf Digest.
