After missing out on the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics due to testing positive for COVID-19, American bobsledder Elana Meyers Taylor was elected to carry the American flag at the closing ceremony on Sunday.

The United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee made the announcement on Friday.

Her fellow Team USA teammates voted the four-time Olympian.

"I was so honored to be named the Opening Ceremony flag bearer, but after not being able to carry the flag, it’s even more humbling to lead the United States at the Closing Ceremony,” said Meyers Taylor. “Congratulations to my fellow Team USA athletes on all their success in Beijing – I'm looking forward to carrying the flag with my teammates by my side and closing out these Games.”

Initially, Taylor was chosen to carry the flag at the opening ceremony but was replaced by speed skater Brittany Bowe after testing positive for COVID-19 shortly after arriving in Beijing and was placed in isolation.

BEIJING (AP) — U.S. men’s figure skater Vincent Zhou has tested positive for the coronavirus and is out of the individual competition.

In a five-minute video posted to Instagram on Monday night, a teary Zhou announced that he would have to withdraw.

He had initially tested positive as part of a routine COVID-19 screening and underwent additional testing.

The 21-year-old had struggled through a poor free skate for the eventual team silver medalists a day before and was due to compete in the individual competition that begins with the men’s short program on Tuesday.

Zhou's news comes on the same day the U.S. figure skating won silver in the team competition.

Zhou said in the video that he dealt with "crushing loneliness" over the past few months to avoid getting the virus, the Associated Press reported.

The news outlet reported he ended the video on a positive note saying, “This is not the end. This is a setup for a bigger comeback."

The Opening Ceremony of the 2022 Winter Olympics is just around the corner.

The world's greatest athletes are ready to capture gold as the Winter Games kick off Friday in Beijing at 6:30 a.m. ET.

NBC plans to present 16 days of Olympic coverage across all its networks. Live streaming of all events will be made available on Peacock.

NBC said primetime coverage would air during the week at 8 p.m. ET and 7 p.m. ET on Sunday.

The Closing Ceremony will take place on Feb. 20.

When is the Opening Ceremony?

The Opening Ceremony will begin Friday at 6:30 a.m. ET and will last until 9 a.m. ET.

An evening broadcast will be shown Friday beginning at 8 p.m. ET.

How to watch the Opening Ceremony?

NBC will broadcast the event and NBCOlympics.com, and live streaming of all events will be made available on Peacock.

What to expect?

According to NBC Sports, Chinese filmmaker Zhang Yimou will direct the Opening Ceremony.

He was also the Opening Ceremony director at the Summer Olympics in Beijing in 2008.

But this time the number of performers will be drastically different - with only 3,000 performers, down from 15,000 in 2008.

The spectacular event will be held at the “Bird’s Nest” National Stadium, also used for the 2008 Summer Olympics.

The stadium might look empty because officials announced last month that zero fans from outside the country would be permitted at the events and tickets were not offered to the general public.

Also, the Biden administration announced in December that they would not send any diplomatic or official representation to the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics over human rights.
