The University of Cincinnati's cornerback Coby Bryant officially received the Paycom Jim Thorpe Award on Tuesday night. This award is given out to the nation's top defensive back. Bryant was announced as the winner back in December at the Home Depot College Football Awards. UC's football head coach, Luke Fickell, defensive coordinator Mike Tressel, director of athletics John Cunningham and the football chief of staff Greg Gillum were just a few among several who attended the 35th annual banquet in support of Bryant. "This has always been a dream for me as a football player, especially as a defensive back," Bryant said. "To actually hear my name called, it was a surreal moment. I can't give enough thanks to the people that have been in my corner since day one. It's a blessing."Bryant played in the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama, then flew to Oklahoma City for three days of events leading up to Tuesday night's official presentation. Fickell introduced Bryant as a player that truly set the standard for the Cincinnati Football program. "You heard a little bit about his character and how he has grown up," Fickell said at a pre-banquet press conference. "The greatest thing I could say is he epitomizes what we want to be as a program. Every year you have to continue to establish that. Over five years, I would say there is no other person that has set the standard for what it is we want to be and what it is we want to get done."He was special for us and he is going to continue to be special."During the 2021 season, Bryant served as a captain at Cincinnati, leading the team to the greatest season in school history. The Bearcats finished with a 13-1 record and made it to the College Football Playoff Semifinals at the Goodyear Cotton Bowl classic. Bryant led UC with 11 pass breakups and three interceptions as Cincinnati won the American Athletic Conference for a second straight season. His achievements don't stop there as he was named All-ACC first team for a second straight year and received several All-American accolades, including first-team honors from the Walter Camp Foundation. Bryant is a Cleveland, Ohio, native who played at Cincinnati for five years. He won 48 games with the Bearcats and finished with 170 tackles and 35 pass breakups in his career to go along with 10 interceptions.

Cincinnati is energized around the UC Bearcats as they count the days to the Cotton Bowl in Texas. It's now just about nine days away.On Tuesday, there was an incredible show of support for the football team with a drone show and fireworks at Nippert Stadium. The excitement is also keeping businesses around campus booming.Fans chanted, clapped and rooted for the football Bearcats during the show.It was a phenomenal display in the sky that seemed to send a bit of a warning to Alabama: this team and its fans mean business."We have just been non-stop busy. Extended store hours. Tons of online orders," DuBois Book Store Operations Manager, Ty Bonawitz, said.Counting down the days to the Cotton Bowl and fans are getting geared up for the Bearcats at DuBois Book Store.Bonawitz said as soon as they put out new stuff, it's gone, and they have to restock again."The biggest problem we're having right now is the cotton shortage that we're dealing which is kind of ironic going to the Cotton Bowl," Bonawitz said.Even the dogs are rooting on these cats — well, the book store owner's dog — who wanders around as shoppers pick their next piece of gear.People said they're making a mad dash to get ready for Texas."Roll tide cool, but no, they ain't cool for us. We've got to beat them. We've got to beat them," fan, Jason Stewart, said.Fans have a hearty appetite to see undefeated UC conquer in this historic appearance in the College Football Playoffs.Over at Mio's, Rich Owens knows the team does, too. They fed them on Monday."We had a whiteboard that we had every player on the team sign and then we're going to laminate it. We haven't titled it yet. We're hoping to put national champs on it," Owens said. It's a moment in Bearcat history that will stick with the kids.As the sun went down on Tuesday, there was a bit of an incognito pep rally to "Light Up Nippert Stadium."There were fireworks and there was also a drone show with messages to root on the team."The programming that went into it and the messages up in the sky. They were really neat," fan, Kerri Todd, said.Of course, there were also the signature UC chants to let Alabama know UC means business."I was excited. I was actually up there and he can vouch for me, I was jumping up and down. I was like, 'Oh my God, I can't wait,'" UC employee, Alex Coleman, said.Fans said some people are driving to Texas and booking houses a couple of hours away so that they can still get close.Even still, businesses believe turnout locally will be good.According to officials, more than 150 synchronized drones were used in the show. They also said a video shot at the event will be featured at some point during the Cotton Bowl.

It's been electric on campus and I'm ready to go to Dallas and see what we can do," UC senior, Nick Meinert, said.So are UC parents."Amazing. I'm so excited. I can't wait to see what they do. Go Bearcats," Debbie Conley said. They're all thrilled to seat the Bearcats not only undefeated, not only the AAC champs but number four in the College Football Playoff rankings. The team is set to take on Alabama in the Cotton Bowl on New Year's Eve.On Sunday, as the announcement echoed over the speakers in bars, people were elated with Bearcat pride. We even found former UC football Bearcat Jordan Roth beaming in the moment."We had the stars line up for us and not to mention, we took care of business with everybody giving us their best every single week and we're the last ones standing and the only undefeated football team in the country," he said. He's excited to see the showdown against Alabama in Texas and he knows this team is ready."Defense. They're going to have to go out. They're going to have to execute just like any time else out there, but I think our corners are the best in the game. I think our pass defense is going to be fantastic. I just think that hard edge style of play, man, we're going to bring it," Roth said.Fans were rowdy in the best way supporting the Bearcats and a fantastic win on Saturday night. Many people said they're already making travel plans to get to Dallas and do it all over again later this month for the hometown team.

SHINING A LIGHT. GREAT STORY. LET US TALK WEATHER, LET’S GET TO CHIEF METEOROLOGIST KEVIN ROBINSON. CHILLY TEMPERATURES OVERNIGHT INTO THE MORNING. ARE WE GOING TO HIT THE REPEAT BUTTON? KEVIN: WE ARE. ALTHOUGH THINGS ARE STTIARNG AROUND THE CORNER TEMPERATURE WISE, WE HAVE A COUPLE OF VERY COLD NIGHTS AHEAD. TEMPERATURES WILL MODERATE INTO THE WEEKEND. HERE’S WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN. HIGH-PRESSURE THAT IS BUT TO OUR WEST THE PAST SEVERAL DSAY I WAS LEFT THE GATE OPEN. OUR WINDS WILL SWITCH SOUTHLYER AND THAT WILL BRING A GRADUAL MODIFICATION TO TEMPERATURES. EVEN INTO THE WEEKEND, WE HAVE A DECENT BREADOR F WIDESPREAD FROST AND FREEZE CONDITIONS UNTIL PROBABLY SUNDAY NIGHT. BY SUNDAY NIGHT, I THINK MOST OF US WILL AGAIN TO AVOID ANY THREAT FOR FROST OR FREEZE CONDITIONS. HERE’S WHAT TO EXPECT TONIGHT. WE ARE ALREADY IN THE UPPER '4’S, HEADED FOR LOWE’S IN TTOHE MIDDLE AND UPPER 20’S. I SUSPECT THERE WILL BE ANOTHER HARD FROST AND FREEZE FOR EVERYONE AROUND THE TRI-STATE TONIGHT, AS LOW AS 26 IN HAMILTON, 29ENVER D SALES, 27 IN MASON IN LOVELAND, SPRINGBORO 29. NICE RECOVERY TOMORROW. WE ARE INTO THE 50’S HEADING INTO TOMORROW, LOW 50’S FOR HIGHS AND 50’S ON SATURDAY IF YOU ARE HEADING TO THE BEARCATS GAME. ARNE 60 SUNDAY FOR THE BENGALS. IF YOU ARE TAILGATING THEM A IT IS STILL -- IF YOU ARE TAILGATING, IT IS STILL GOING TO BE CHILLY SATURDAY AND SUNDAY. SETTING SUN AND 48 IN CINCINNATI, THE WIND IS STARTING TO RELAX AND LIGHT WIND. THESE NUMBERS WILL GET CLOSE, THE TEMPERATURE IN THE DEW POINT. IT GIVES A CLUE TO WHERE WE EAR HEADED OVERNIGHT. BEGINNING TO SPLI INTO THE MID-40’S, MOST OF US IN T 3HE0’S BY 80:0 OR 830. -- 8:30. WE WILL COAST IO TNTHE MID-20’S BEFORE THE SUN COMES UP TOMORROW. ANOTHER CLEAR, COLDND A FROSTY ONE. TOMORROW, COOL SUNSHINE, A NICE DAY, WE WILL TOP OUT AROUND 50, A FEW FOLKS IN THE LOW 50’S. THE DAY PLANNER STARTING WITH THE ICE SCRAPER AGAIN IN THE MORNING IF YOU PARK OSIUTDE. THAWING OUT BY AFTERNO.ON THE SEVEN DAY FORECAST, TEMPERATURES RISE TO 60 SUNDAY IN THE MID 60’S, JUST SHY OF 70 EARLY NEXT WEEK. OUR NEXT REAL THREAT VERANDAS NOT GETTGIN UNTIL THURSDAY AND BEREFO THEN, EVEN THOUGH IT MAY BE NICE AND SUN,NY WE LOSE -- OR GAZE ANOTHER -- GAIN ANOTHER HOUR OF SLEEP.

<p>CINCINNATI — The UC Bearcats football team released a statement Friday in solidarity with other sports teams and leagues protesting racial injustice.</p>
<p>In a statement posted to social media Friday, players said they "stand firm on the pillars of UC’s mission to enrich our university, city, state and global community."</p>
<p>"A melting pot of educated and engaged citizens, we cannot sit idly by as the direct plight and injustices of the Black community are routinely streamed, posted and publicized," the statement read. "Our hearts are heavy as we continue to process the most recent tragedies of Jacob Blake, Breonna Taylor, George Floyd and countless others."</p>
<p>Players also posted support for the Black Lives Matter movement.</p>
<p>"As student-athletes at the university, we stand in solidarity in the fight for racial equality and social justice," the statement continued. "We will continue to use our voices as advocates for positive change. This is bigger than us. This is bigger than sports.”</p>

<p>NEW YORK (AP) — Federal authorities say 18 former NBA players, including a former University of Cincinnati All-American, have been charged with defrauding the league's health and welfare benefit plan out of about $4 million. </p>
<p>A news conference was held Thursday to announce the charges brought in an indictment in Manhattan federal court. </p>
<p>The indictment said the ex-players and a 19th individual engaged in a widespread scheme to defraud the plan by submitting false and fraudulent claims to reimburse medical and dental expenses that were never incurred. </p>
<p>According to the <a class="Link" href="https://apnews.com/article/nba-sports-business-basketball-indictments-a785d565968ec3e50600baf67d9b64e3">Associated Press</a>, the scheme occurred from at least 2017 to 2020.</p>
<p>The AP reported that the false claims totaled about $3.9 million, with the 19 defendants allegedly received about $2.5 million in fraudulent proceeds.</p>
<p>One of the former NBA players was allegedly Ruben Patterson, who was a Third Team All-American during his time with UC from 1996-1998.</p>
<p>The list of former players also includes Jamario Moon, Glen "Big Baby" Davis, and Sebastian Telfair.</p>
<p><a class="Link" href="https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/18-former-nba-players-arrested-federal-authorities-alleged-health-care-n1281022">NBC News</a> reported the rest of the defendants include Terrence Williams, Alan Anderson, Anthony Allen, Desiree Allen, Shannon Brown, William Bynum, Christopher Douglas-Roberts, Melvin Ely, Darius Miles, Milton Palacio, Eddie Robinson, Gregory Smith, Charles Watson Jr., Antoine Wright, and Anthony Wroten.</p>
<p>No current major league stars were charged, the AP reported.</p>

<p>SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — Notre Dame has found its new defensive coordinator, hiring Marcus Freeman away from Cincinnati.</p>
<p>Freeman, who turns 35 on Sunday, had spent the last three seasons as Cincinnati’s linebackers coach and defensive coordinator. He now will fill both those roles at Notre Dame.</p>
<p>He replaces Clark Lea, <a class="Link" href="https://apnews.com/article/college-football-sports-football-notre-dame-fighting-irish-football-nashville-4b5504e3e264acd52980ebcf5618b9b1">who left to take over Vanderbilt’s program.</a></p>
<p>“As we looked into finding someone to run our defense, it was important to find the right fit for our program and Marcus and his family are just that,” Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly said Friday in a statement. “He has had great success on the field, both running a defense and in his direct work with his linebackers. Additionally, he is considered among the elite recruiters in the coaching ranks.”</p>
<p>Cincinnati ranked 13th among all Football Bowl Subdivision teams in <a class="Link" href="https://cfbstats.com/2020/leader/national/team/defense/split01/category10/sort01.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">total defense </a>(324.6) and eighth in <a class="Link" href="https://cfbstats.com/2020/leader/national/team/defense/split01/category09/sort01.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">scoring defense</a> (16.8) this season as the Bearcats went 9-1, ending with a 24-21 <a class="Link" href="https://apnews.com/article/college-football-cincinnati-bearcats-football-georgia-cincinnati-jack-podlesny-822ad45a4c58a1a6c85aba18592ebf48">Peach Bowl loss</a> to Georgia.</p>
<p>The Bearcats were third in <a class="Link" href="https://cfbstats.com/2020/leader/national/team/defense/split01/category02/sort02.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">pass efficiency defense, </a>14th in <a class="Link" href="https://cfbstats.com/2020/leader/national/team/defense/split01/category01/sort01.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">run defense</a> and tied for 10th in <a class="Link" href="https://cfbstats.com/2020/leader/national/team/offense/split01/category12/sort03.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">takeaways.</a></p>
<p>Freeman will get a chance to face his former team next season. Notre Dame is scheduled to host Cincinnati on Oct. 2.</p>
<p>Before coming to Cincinnati, Freeman spent three seasons at Purdue. He was Penn State’s linebackers coach from 2011-12. He started his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Ohio State in 2010.</p>
<p>He played linebacker for Ohio State from 2004-08.</p>
<p>“The work Marcus has done elevating the programs he has been a part of speaks for itself, but equally as important is the exceptional work he has done in building relationships with his staff and players,” Kelly said. “Marcus was our top choice to become our next defensive coordinator, and we are pleased he and his family will be joining us at Notre Dame.”</p>
