HARWINTON, Conn. (AP) — Wildlife biologists in Connecticut had to rescue a bear cub that got its head stuck in a plastic container.

The misadventure happened on June 23 when a mother bear with three cubs knocked over a garbage can in the town of Harwinton.

One of the cubs stuck its head in a clear plastic jar that had spilled out.

Wildlife biologists waited for the cub to come down from a tree and then tranquilized it and removed the container.

The bear was unhurt and quickly found its mother waiting nearby.

Wildlife officials should make sure trash is properly disposed of and secured in containers to avoid bears getting into it.

A teddy bear toss at a Pennsylvania minor league hockey game has reportedly set a new world record. When the Hershey Bears scored their first goal on Saturday night, fans were prompted to toss all the stuffed animals they brought to the game onto the ice. According to team officials, 52,341 stuffed animals were collected and donated to various organizations. This year's toss surpassed the Hershey Bear's 2019 event total of 45,650, which was the previous world record. Last year, due to the pandemic, the team collected the stuffed animals at a drive-thru fundraiser instead of at a game. In total, the club has collected an estimated 322,199 plush toys since 2001.The team, which is an affiliate of the NHL's Washington Capitals, also elicited a big cash donation Saturday night.Bears fan Jeff Sweigart said if the record was broken, he'd donate $50,000.That money will go to Children's Miracle Network at Penn State Health Children's Hospital. After the toss, the Bears went on to defeat the Hartford Wolf Pack, 5-0.Watch the video above for more on this story.

A woman spoke to Orlando sister station WESH after being attacked by a black bear while walking her dog in Volusia County, Florida, Thursday night. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and the Volusia County Sheriff's Office responded to a call in DeBary, Florida, around 9 p.m., according to the state conservation commission.Neighbors helped save the woman, who identified herself as Aydee, from a mother bear protecting her three cubs. She recalled the bear tackling her as she was heading into her house."I took off running that way and then she was running behind me. And she grabbed me by my shoulders and, I mean, I fell to the ground," Aydee said.Aydee suffered scratches on her face, a concussion, and bites and scratches on her lower back that required a trip to the hospital and stitches. When the 911 operator asked if Aydee was injured, the caller responded: "In her hand, and her face, and her back. So she was attacked, actually."She had just stepped into her driveway with her dogs, Amaya and Hemmy, when the adult bear chased and tackled her by the street."The worst (experience) of my life... I never experienced this before. Like, you go through things in life but this is life the worst. Number one I would say," Aydee said. "I feel lucky to be alive."Before the attack, neighbors tell me a man and his wife were across the street when the adult bear came down from this pine tree and started coming at them.Austin Kennedy watched as the bear looked like it would charge the couple."The bear came down, because she had cubs and came down, went after her, he scared the bear, and then she eventually the bear ran that way and attacked the lady," Kennedy said.Finding the bear in this tree when they arrived, Fish and Wildlife officers tranquilized and euthanized it, while other neighbors watched, and wondered if it could have been spared."Unfortunately, the neighbor you know got scratched up by the bear, and she is fortunate to be alive I guess but as far as euthanizing it, why not relocate it?" neighbor David Mangham said. But FWC tells us, the woman's injuries prove the bear was a risk to people living here."We can't have bears living in neighborhoods that are willing to hurt somebody. We just can't allow it," David Telesco, FWC Bear Management Program Coordinator."FWC bear biologists darted the adult bear in the tree and humanely killed it per the FWC policy to protect public safety," the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said in a news release. The 100-pound "yearlings were determined to be old enough to survive on their own, so no attempt was made to capture them." Because the cubs are yearlings, they're able to care for themselves and were allowed to wander off. Bear attacks are extremely rare. This is just the 14th attack on a human since 2006. But keep this in mind, nine of those attacks have happened in just the last seven years.

It's a funny story to share because it's like, obviously a little bit personal. But it's such a good story that I'm like I don't care. That's what Shannon Stephen says now, about a weekend she'll never forget. On Saturday, Shannon was camping with her brother at his Your near Chilcot Lake in Haines. She made a trip to the outhouse sometime after dinner and discovered she wasn't alone, went into the outhouse, Um, sat down on the toilet, and immediately something bit me. That's right. Bit her right on her bottom. Shannon screams, brought her brother running to the outhouse to see what was going on. I asked what bit you And she said, I don't know. And then I asked, Well, where is it? And she said, It's down in the hole and I'm like, Okay, I'm gonna I'm gonna open the lid and see what's down there. And so I grabbed my headlamp and I opened the lid, and right there is a big bear face just staring back at me, cinnamon colored bare face, which I was not expecting to see. Karl Koch is the wildlife biologist for the area. Have you ever even heard in the summertime of somebody looking down, and there was a bear head in their outhouse like that, It down in the hole. Never heard of anybody looking down and seeing a bear head? No, no, But Koch says bears can definitely be out in winter. And the next day Shannon's brother found tracks of what appeared to be a black bear near his outhouse to prove it, Eric Stephen says the experience has taught him a lesson. It definitely makes me, you know, want to be more cautious out there. And Shannon Stevens has learned something, too. I think I'll just look a little bit more closely. Yeah, how is next time she'll be a little more hesitant before she sits down for Alaska's new source, I'm Loran Maxwell.

Shannon Stevens will never forget a recent camping trip with her brother in Alaska. "It's a funny story to share because it's like, obviously a little bit personal, but it's such a good story that I'm like, I don't care," Stevens told KTUU. Stevens said after dinner with her brother at a yurt near Chilkat Lake, she went to the outhouse and almost instantly realized she wasn't alone."Went right into the outhouse, sat down on the toilet and immediately, something bit me," she said. When Erik Stevens went to investigate, he found something unexpected. "I grabbed my headlamp and I open the lid and right there is a big bear face just staring back at me — a cinnamon-colored bear face, which I was not expecting to see," he said. Carl Koch, a wildlife biologist in the area, told KTUU that while he's never heard a story quite like this, it's not uncommon for bears to be out and about in the winter months. The next day, Erik Stevens found bear tracks near the outhouse, confirming he and his sister's unbelievable experience. "It definitely makes me want to be more cautious out there," Erik Stevens said. Shannon Stevens' wound wasn't serious and has completely healed, but she says she learned a lesson from the experience. "I think I'll just look a little bit more closely at the outhouse next time," she said.

GREAT FALLS, Mont. — Officials in Montana say they've killed a male grizzly bear they suspect was involved in the fatal attack of a 65-year-old camper who was visiting the state earlier this week.

On Thursday evening, the Powell County Sheriff's office said it received a report from a resident who came home and found her door ripped off. Claw marks were left at the scene. A short time later, a male grizzly bear was killed in the area.

Samples were taken from the bear and sent to a testing facility. They hope to make a positive identification within a few days.

Though the identity has not been confirmed, officials believe the bear killed Thursday was the same one that killed Leah Davis of Chico, California, on Tuesday as she slept in her tent in the town of Ovando.

Two campers who were in Davis' party said the bear was first spotted Tuesday morning around 3 a.m. local time.

The bear woke the campers but then ran away. The three campers removed food from their tents, secured it, and went back to bed.

A video camera at a business less than a block away recorded the bear in the vicinity at about 3:15 a.m.

At about 3:30 a.m., the two people in the tent adjacent to the victim were awakened by sounds of the attack. They got out of the tent and sprayed the bear with bear spray.

Davis was pulled from her tent during the attack and later pronounced dead.

The bear has also been blamed for the death of several chickens in a coop nearby in Ovando.

Search continues for grizzly bear that killed a woman in Ovando

A bear in Arizona emerged unscathed from quite the power trip when it became stuck on a utility pole.Sulphur Springs Valley Electric Cooperative, a utility company based in the southern Arizona city of Willcox, was notified Monday morning that a bear was tangled in power pole wires on the outskirts of town.Werner Neubauer, a company lineman, said they immediately disabled the power so the animal would not get electrocuted. Neubauer then went up in a bucket lift and used an 8-foot fiberglass stick to try to nudge the bear to go down. He even tried talking to it.“I think I told him I was gonna help him get down the pole,” Neubauer said. “I know he couldn’t understand me. But it did get his attention.”After grabbing and biting the stick at times, the bear eventually climbed down and ran off into the desert.According to Neubauer, there were no injuries, and the power outage, which affected residential customers, only lasted about 15 minutes. When told the reason for the outage, he said several customers were understanding. This is the second time in a month that a bear has been spotted in a southern Arizona city.
