Fireworks detonated Sunday morning on the Ocean City, Maryland, beach, injuring an employee who was setting up for July Fourth festivities.Several videos of the explosion were tweeted around 10:30 a.m. Sunday. Video obtained by sister station WBAL 11 News shows the explosion.Police said an employee of the fireworks company suffered minor injuries and refused to be taken to a hospital. No beach or boardwalk patrons were injured, police said."Our fire marshals are on the scene and will investigate the cause of the unintentional discharge," Ocean City fire Chief Richie Bowers said in a statement posted on Facebook. "Prior to the fireworks being offloaded from the vehicle, fire marshals secure a safe zone around the fireworks and put other safety protocols in place. It is this very zone and safety protocols that kept anyone else from being injured." A fireworks show was planned for later in the day for July Fourth celebrations in the area of North Division Street and the boardwalk. Watch the video above to see the fire works detonate on the beach.

The cruise industry is one step closer to offering voyages out of U.S. ports as Royal Caribbean has launched a trial cruise out of PortMiami. This marks the first time a cruise ship set sail out of a U.S. port in 15 months, when the pandemic shut down the entire industry.Royal Caribbean's Freedom of the Seas left the port around 7 p.m. Friday for a two-day simulated voyage to the Bahamas.Company representatives say this trip, made up of all volunteer employee passengers, is a way to test out all of the company's new health and safety measures created by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).All of those volunteers are vaccinated and a CDC representative is on board. On Sunday, Royal Caribbean employees shared what was going through their minds before setting sail.“I needed to get out. I’m vaccinated. I’ve been very healthy, thank God," said Delilah Herrera. "I just need to get out and see my friends and see my work family." The cruise line says they encourage passengers to get vaccinated, but it’s not mandatory. However, company representatives say they believe they have enough protocols in place to keep everyone safe."We do strongly recommend all the guests to be vaccinated, as for sure for those who are eligible, but we have measures in place to keep the crews safe," said Captain Patrick Dahlgren, senior VP of global marine operations for Royal Caribbean. Unvaccinated passengers will be required to pay for COVID-19 testing if they set sail with Royal Caribbean. While a federal judge sided with the state of Florida late last week, declaring the CDC can’t enforce COVID-19 restrictions of any kind on cruises and granting a temporary injunction, Royal Caribbean still appears to be following the CDC's COVID-19 guidelines.Per the CDC's guidelines, the cruise line would not have been required to conduct a trial cruise if they had a vaccine mandate for passengers. The federal judge has ordered both the state and the CDC to return to mediation to try to work out a solution.Meanwhile, Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line's Grand Classica is expected to have its own two-day simulated voyage out of the Port of Palm Beach starting this Friday.Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line expects to resume its passenger cruises starting July 2.

A teen girl died Saturday after getting struck by lightning at a Georgia beach.Witnesses saw the incident, which happened at Tybee Island on Saturday afternoon."It was scary. I will never say the odds of getting struck by lighting is slim," said Dylan Pope, who was at Tybee Island near 17th Street when he heard a big boom. “We saw one big bolt. Nobody knew someone got hit,” Pope said.A 15-year-old girl visiting from Alabama was struck by lightning. She died from her injuries, officials said. "People were either in a panic, they were running off the beach, two people ran down to try and give her CPR," Pope said. Barabara Loyd was also visiting Tybee Island when the lighting struck."It shook the beach ground,” Loyd said the thunderstorm came out of nowhere "There was no sign, I didn’t even get a notification from my weather app.”Brandi Sheridan is another witness who saw the lightning strike and she said, "It was horrible to see. The lightning bolt seemed to come out of nowhere. We were all leaving the beach. This was truly just a freak occurrence. We spoke to a lifeguard who said he’s been a lifeguard on this beach for over five years and in that time no one has been struck by lightning. My heart breaks for them."According to the National Weather Service, lightning killed an average of 27 people each year between 2009 and 2018.

It's common to see some jellyfish wash up on Georgia beaches, but how about thousands of them?On Friday afternoon, Jodi Moody spotted what she calls a "jellyfish jamboree" on the north end of Tybee Island, facing Hilton Head Island. She said they were all cannonball jellyfish in a full range of sizes.According to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, cannonball jellyfish are by far the most prominent species of jellyfish on the southeastern coast of the United States. The good news is they are one of the least venomous.During the summer and fall, the GADNR says they are found to be incredibly abundant along the coastline. Moody said the wind was strong the day she spotted them, so she believes that's what caused them to wash up. She estimates that the jellyfish covered about 200 feet of the shoreline. Moody, who is from Wilmington Island, said she's never seen anything like this before. Take a look at the "jamboree" in the video player above.
