<p>
The return of Joey Votto has been long-awaited, but the wait was worth it after he hit a tiebreaking homerun to give the Reds' a lead over Toronto on Sunday. It seems fitting that Votto would hit a homerun against he Blue Jays after he was asked what sights he wanted to see on his trip back home and he responded, "Sights-wise, the center of the baseball. Parts of the city, somewhere around windows, maybe the second deck. Somewhere around there. That’s what I’m targeting.”The Reds have been without their star first baseman since May 3 when he was placed on the COVID-19 injured list. Votto was reassigned to play with the Reds' Triple A affiliate Louisville Bats before returning to the major league club. When he was placed on the injured list, he was hitting .122 with four runs, three RBI's and a double, so far this season. On May 16, the Reds announced that Votto would continue his rehab assignment in Dayton with the Dayton Dragons, where he started out his MLB career when he first got drafted in 2002. Votto returned to the Reds' roster on Friday when the team traveled to his hometown of Toronto to face the Blue Jays. Although the Reds' only won one game out of the three-game series, this win was a meaningful one for the first baseman. Bally Sports Jim Day asked Votto how much his tiebreaking homerun meant to him, since it was Votto's first home run of the season as well. "It has meaning, but I gotta start hitting. So, I could've done it on Mars and it would have felt satisfying. You know, I have to perform well, I've got to fit with these guys. I've got to do my job and you know, I have to do it ASAP and that was ASAP," Votto replied. Day then teased that it could be Votto's last time playing in the Blue Jay's stadium, but Votto wasn't thinking about that, his mind was set on the game and doing what he did best."I wasn't thinking like that," Votto said. "I'm thinking I'm in the middle of competition, our teams tied. I've got to get a good pitch to hit. I'm starting to feel better at the plate. I don't want to get cheated. I want to make sure that I'm being myself and competing well... When you're in the middle of work like this, that's the priority, you know? I'm wearing a Reds uniform right now in a road city. No question about, it has great meaning, but I'm not thinking about that right in the heart of competition."Votto also spoke about how returning to his hometown means a lot to him because he gets to see and spend time with his family that he doesn't normally see all the time. "I got to see my mother. You know, you go months, months without seeing family. And it's the nature of our job I wouldn't have any other way, but I got to see my little nephew and my brother and his and his wife. They got to play on the field yesterday after the game. It means a great deal to me to be able to see so many familiar faces and receive a ton of support in my home city," Votto told Day. The Cincinnati Reds will be back in action at Great American Ball Park on Monday against the Chicago Cubs, where hopefully Votto and the Reds can keep the ball rolling.

Tommy Edman hit a two-run homer with two outs in the ninth inning for the first walkoff RBI of his major league career, lifting the St. Louis Cardinals over Cincinnati 5-4 on Saturday in yet another Reds bullpen collapse.Paul Goldschmidt’s streak of reaching base ended at 46 games with an 0-for-4 day for the NL Central-leading Cardinals.St. Louis pitcher Adam Wainwright and catcher Yadier Molina made their 316th start together, tying the Boston and Milwaukee Braves’ Warren Spahn and Del Crandall for second-most behind the 324 of Detroit’s Mickey Lolich and Bill Freehan.Wainwright, 40, was matched up against Cincinnati's 22-year-old Hunter Greene.Cincinnati led 4-1 in the eighth inning but blew a save for the seventh time in 17 chances, and the Cardinals won despite getting outhit 12-7.Tyler O'Neill, who had three RBIs, hit a two-run double off Hunter Strickland that pulled St. Louis to 4-3 in the eighth.Joel Kuhnel (0-1), a 27-year-old rookie right-hander, walked Dylan Carlson leading off the ninth but got Molina to ground into a double play.Juan Yepez singled and Edman reached down for a slider at the knees, driving the ball to right-center for his sixth home run and giving the Cardinals their third walkoff win this season.St. Louis (34-26) won the first two games of the three-game series and sent the NL-worst Reds (20-39) to their fourth straight loss and seventh defeat in nine games,Nick Wittgren (1-0) pitched a one-hit ninth for his first win with St. Louis.Wainwright allowed three runs and eight hits in seven innings.Greene gave up one run, two hits and two walks with seven strikeouts before being pulled after allowing the first two batters to reach base in the sixth. He topped 100 mph with five pitches and averaged 98.7 mph with his fastball.Tommy Pham put the Reds ahead with a two-run double in the third off Wainwright, his former teammate, and scored on Kyle Farmer's single for a 3-0 lead.O'Neill hit a sacrifice fly in the sixth and Alejo López, who had replaced an injured Colin Moran, hit an RBI single off Drew VerHagen in the eighth for a 4-1 lead.MOVESCincinnati claimed OF Stuart Fairchild off waivers from San Francisco and optioned him to Triple-A Louisville. RHP James Marinan was designated for assignment.TRAINER’S ROOMReds: Moran left in the bottom of the seventh after getting tangled with Dylan Carlson on a tag at first. The College World Series is a lot of things and for one Nebraska family, it's tradition. Baseball has been in Ashley Schrad and Sandy Petry’s lives for a long time and the pair have been attending the College World Series for more than two decades. In 1996, the duo decided they no longer wanted to sit in general admission seats.“We would get in line at 9 o'clock in the morning and waited until the game started,” Schrad said. They applied for season tickets, but had to get on a waiting list.“First of all they told me a five-year waiting list and I’m like OK, five years is fine. Poor lady, I called there every year after that like where are we on the list, where are we on the list,” Petry said. Those five years would swiftly pass and it wasn't until 2017 they finally received the email they've been waiting on -- 21 years later."I walked out to my husband and I’m like, 'oh my gosh, I’m going to have heart failure.' He's like, 'what do you mean?' I go, 'we have tickets,'" Petry said. Those tickets gave them the seats they wanted and became the start of something new.“Twenty-one years of being on a list and I knew that Ashley and I would be spending a lot of time together even as she grew up,” Petry said.Their tradition now is to attend the opening ceremony and the first four games together, getting a chance to see all eight teams on the diamond.“It is amazing! I have an unbreakable bond with my mom, no matter what. We've been through hell and high water together,” Schrad said.Ashley now has two sons and plans to pass on the tradition.“One of them is old enough that he can go with my mom by himself if he wants to,” she said. But for now, they'll enjoy watching the first pitch, calling those tickets and their bond a home run.“We know change happens, but the memories and love don't change. It will always be with us even when it's time to not go anymore,” Petry said.

Elias Díaz hit a two-run homer off Félix Bautista in the eighth inning, and the National League snapped a nine-game losing streak in the All-Star Game with a 3-2 win over the American League on Tuesday night. The NL won for the first time since an 8-0 victory in 2012 in Kansas City thanks to Díaz, a catcher who became the first Rockies player to win the All-Star MVP award.Díaz, who was non-tendered by the Pirates at the end of 2019, drove a 2-2 pitch from Baltimore's hard-throwing closer deep to left to put the NL in front. Díaz was the lone representative for Colorado in his first All-Star Game appearance. He has nine homers this season, but hadn't hit a long ball since June 23 against the Los Angeles Angels."This means a lot to me, to my family," he said. "Being in the ASG for me is amazing."For most of the night, the All-Star Game was a pitchers' duel highlighted by a couple big hits and some excellent defense. It got nervous for the NL in the ninth. Wander Franco flied out to the warning track leading off against Philadelphia closer Craig Kimbrel, who issued two-out walks to Kyle Tucker and Seattle star Julio Rodríguez.Kimbrel recovered to strike out José Ramírez to end it. Kimbrel also pitched in the previous NL win, recording two outs in 2012.Yandy Díaz hit a solo homer in the second inning and Bo Bichette's sacrifice fly in the sixth inning gave the AL a 2-1 lead.J.D. Martinez doubled and scored on Luis Arraez's single in the fourth against Seattle's George Kirby, tying it at 1. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. appeared to tie the game again in the seventh when his shot down the left-field line was originally ruled a homer but was overturned as a foul ball on replay. The All-Star Game returned to the Emerald City for the first time since 2001 when the Mariners were in the middle of their magical 116-win regular season, Cal Ripken Jr. said goodbye to the All-Star stage and Tommy Lasorda took a tumble.Gerrit Cole became the first New York Yankees pitcher to start the All-Star Game since Roger Clemens in that 2001 game. He needed a pair of spectacular leaping catches from Adolis García and Randy Arozarena near the wall to escape the first inning unscathed.Pitching was the story of the night. Only nine balls were hit over 100 mph. There were 20 combined strikeouts, including Camilo Doval silencing the home crowd with a strikeout of Rodríguez in the seventh inning where four of the five pitches topped 100 mph.

<p>A North Carolina youth baseball tournament was canceled after a Sunday shooting erupted near the stadium.</p>
<p>Wilson, North Carolina, police said no one was injured, and they do not believe the incident was an active shooting. The department said three shots were fired.</p>
<p>The video showed children, coaches and fans running for cover and ducking on the field.</p>
<p>The police department said that two vehicles were potentially involved in the incident and the occupants of those cars were tournament attendees.</p>
<p>Wilmington Youth Baseball said it pulled out of the tournament for children up to age 8 following the shots fired.</p>
<p>“As a result of the experience, we have elected to withdraw the team from the tournament as we (along with coaches and parents) felt it was best for the boys given the circumstances. It was a very difficult day for everyone involved,” the team wrote in a statement. “Please keep them all in your thoughts and prayers as the events that surrounded this unexplainable action have not only denied the boys an opportunity that they earned and deserve, but it also undoubtedly robbed them of the amazing experience and memories that All-Star Season brings.”</p>
<p><u><a class="Link" href="https://abc11.com/little-league-baseball-shooting-wilson-durham-bulls-nc/12047756/">Following news of Sunday’s incident, </a></u>the Durham Bulls invited the teams impacted to play at their stadium, WTVD-TV reported.</p>

Matt Manning wasn’t upset about being pulled while pitching a no-hitter.He said he didn’t even realize it until someone told him in the dugout.“I had no idea,” he said. “I was like, 'well, dang,’”By the time the game was over, everyone at Comerica Park knew what Manning and relievers Jason Foley and Alex Lange had achieved.Foley and Lange finished what Manning started, and the Tigers no-hit the Toronto Blue Jays in a 2-0 win on Saturday.Manning (3-1) pitched 6 2/3 innings and Foley got four straight outs.Lange, the Tigers closer, came in for the ninth and struck out Bo Bichette on three pitches. Brandon Belt lined out to center field, and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. grounded out to third on an 0-2 pitch. It was the ninth no-hitter in Tigers history and the first combined one. It was the first no-hitter for the franchise since Spencer Turnbull no-hit the Seattle Mariners on May 18, 2021. It was Detroit's second against the Blue Jays — Justin Verlander did it in Toronto on May 7, 2011.Verlander also pitched the most recent no-hitter against the Blue Jays, doing it for Houston on Sept. 1, 2019.It's the second no-hitter in the majors this season after Domingo Germán’s perfect game for the New York Yankees at Oakland on June 28 and it’s the majors’ first combined no-hitter since three Houston Astros pitchers shut down the Yankees in June 2022.The Tigers celebrated at the mound with Manning and Foley joining the crowd.“How about that, Detroit?” Lange yelled to the crowd while being interviewed on the field with Manning, Foley and catcher Eric Haase. “Thank you for sitting through the rain to cheer for us.”Manning was replaced after walking Cavan Biggio with two outs in the seventh. He walked three batters and hit one while striking out five. He threw 91 pitches.“He was laboring a ton,” Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said. “I almost took him out after the fifth and after the sixth. I sent him out for the seventh, but once a runner gets on, we have to worry about winning the game.”Foley retired Whit Merrifield in the seventh before pitching a perfect eighth.“I thought Matty was going to keep going, but I got in there and tried to throw strikes,” he said. “This is pretty awesome — I couldn't ask for two better guys to do this with.”Kevin Gausman (7-5) allowed two runs in the first inning.Riley Greene singled in his first at-bat since May 30 and scored on Spencer Torkelson’s one-out double in the first.Kerry Carpenter followed with an RBI triple to make it 2-0, but Javier Báez hit into an inning-ending double play.Carpenter made a spectacular catch to start the fourth inning, sliding in foul territory to catch Guerrero Jr’s pop fly down the right-field line.Báez made a big play in the sixth, racing into left field to catch Bichette’s fly ball with left fielder Matt Vierling shifted to left-center field.“You have to tip your cap to good pitching and some great defense,” Blue Jays manager John Schneider said. “Javi made a great play on Bo's ball and Carpenter made the catch on Vladdy. That's usually what happens — you have good pitching backed up by some good plays.”The start of the game was delayed 1:22 by rain and a hard shower fell in the first inning.“I think that helped me a lot — battling through adversity early like that,” said Manning, who started the game by hitting Bichette and walking Belt. “I got into rhythm with Haase and it felt really good.”Haase also caught Turnbull's no-hitter.“About the sixth inning, you start counting outs,” he said. “Matt was keeping them uncomfortable and then Foley came in and shut the door before Lange did what he does.”The Tigers lost 12-2 to the Blue Jays on Friday.“Our approach at the plate was whatever we didn't do last night,” Haase said. “That's baseball — we got our teeth kicked in last night and get a combined no-hitter today.”

Raise your hand if you saw that coming from the Cincinnati Reds.Joey Votto lined a tiebreaking double in a three-run 10th inning for his second go-ahead hit of the night, and Cincinnati beat the New York Yankees 7-6 on Thursday to earn an unexpected series win.Last in the NL Central, the Reds got an outstanding outing from Luis Castillo and took two of three at Yankee Stadium from the top team in the majors. They blew a sizable lead for the second consecutive night, but this time recovered and held on to win for the sixth time in seven games overall. Boosted by a ninth-inning comeback in the opener Tuesday night, it's the first time they've won back-to-back series all season.“This whole series felt like a playoff series,” Cincinnati manager David Bell said. “It’s a great experience for our team and that’s how you get better.”It was only the sixth time in major league history a team with a winning percentage below .400 won a road series against an opponent with a .700 winning percentage 50 games into a season, according to STATS.The last time it happened was 2001, when the struggling Kansas City Royals upended Seattle. Before that, it hadn't happened in 46 years. New York has lost only four series all season and has won 20 of its last 24 home games.“It’s pretty special,” Reds shortstop Kyle Farmer said. “No one can take that away from us and it’s pretty cool.” Aaron Judge hit his major league-leading 31st home run to start a Yankees comeback in the eighth - one inning after he made a diving catch in center field.Gleyber Torres tied it 4-all with a two-run homer off Jeff Hoffman, costing Castillo a win. Matched up in a crisp duel with fellow All-Star Nestor Cortes, the right-hander pitched seven splendid innings of two-hit ball.“He's one of the best pitchers in the league,” Judge said. "He just didn’t leave too many mistakes for us to hit. When you have 100 (mph) and you’re painting the corners, that’s in for a tough day.” Tyler Stephenson followed Votto's double off Lucas Luetge (2-3) with an RBI double of his own, and Donovan Solano added a run-scoring single with two outs to make it 7-4.Matt Carpenter led off the bottom of the 10th with a two-run homer against winner Reiver Sanmartin (3-4), who got two outs in the ninth.New York tried to finish off yet another rally but Dauri Moreta got two outs for his first major league save, retiring DJ LeMahieu on well-struck drive to center field with two on to end it. Moreta said he got the game ball and will give it to his mother. Votto gave the Reds a 2-1 lead in the eighth with an RBI single off reliever Jonathan Loáisiga, just activated from the injured list. Farmer added a two-run single to make it 4-1.“Things didn't work out the way I wanted,” Loáisiga said through a translator. Castillo struck out eight and walked four, throwing 114 pitches in an impressive trade audition for contending clubs. “He’s nasty,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. “He was tough.”Cincinnati figures to be a seller ahead of the Aug. 2 deadline, and Castillo is a prime target for teams in need of starting pitching.“I’ve heard the rumors about being traded to the Yankees and stuff like that," he said through a translator. Votto said opposing hitters keep telling him how good Castillo's stuff is when they get to first base.“He was excellent. He seems to be getting hotter, so it’s been really fun to watch,” Votto said. “It’s the best I’ve seen him.” Anthony Rizzo doubled with one out in the sixth for New York's first hit. Judge, who had walked, went to third on the play and scored on Giancarlo Stanton's RBI groundout.Cortes also went seven innings, allowing four hits and a walk with four strikeouts. The only run he gave up came on Brandon Drury's shallow sacrifice fly to right that caught Carpenter, an inexperienced outfielder, off guard.Carpenter made the catch with the bases loaded but didn't look home right away, allowing Nick Senzel to score easily from third. TRAINER’S ROOMReds: Senzel returned to the starting lineup in center field. He was a late scratch Wednesday with back stiffness and was caught stealing as a pinch runner in the eighth. ... Cincinnati recalled INF/OF Max Schrock from Triple-A Louisville. ... RHP Luis Cessa (left intercostalis) planned to play catch. ... RHP Vladimir Gutiérrez is scheduled for Tommy John surgery next Wednesday.Yankees: RHP Luis Severino went on the 15-day injured list, one day after leaving his start with right shoulder tightness. Jose Barrero hit a tiebreaking RBI single in Cincinnati's three-run fifth inning, and the Reds stopped a five-game slide with an 8-5 victory over the Chicago Cubs on Sunday.“It meant a lot that I could contribute to the victory," Barrero said through an interpreter. “I felt better today. I still have to work on a couple things. I’m working on cutting down on my swing and try to hit it up the middle.”Aristides Aquino hit a three-run drive for Cincinnati, and Austin Romine doubled home two runs. It was Aquino's first homer since he hit two against the Cubs on May 23.“I didn’t really think about my last home run when I went to the plate," Aquino said. "I just enjoyed the game and the process and do my best.”It was the Reds' highest scoring game since an 8-2 victory over Baltimore on July 30.Joel Kuhnel (2-1) pitched two scoreless innings for the win. Alexis Díaz struck out Nelson Velázquez and Ian Happ with the bases loaded in the eighth before finishing his fifth save.“To come in that spot and not give up any runs is huge," Reds manager David Bell said. "You expect that he will give up a run and we still hold the lead, but to completely shut it down against those two hitters is really special. I think for any pitcher to get five outs to end the game is special. He looked really comfortable, not that it was easy.” Five Reds relievers combined for 5 1/3 scoreless innings.Cincinnati’s Joey Votto made his 1,989th career appearance, snapping a tie with Hall of Famer Larry Walker for the most in major league history by players born in Canada. The teams combined for four homers and 10 runs in the first four innings.Patrick Wisdom gave the Cubs a 2-0 lead with a two-run drive that squeezed just inside the left-field foul pole in the second. Aquino responded with his fourth homer in the bottom half, a deep drive into the lower deck in left.Chicago grabbed a 5-4 lead with three runs in the fourth. Yan Gomes hit a tying a two-run shot that reached the first row of the second deck in left. Christopher Morel then went deep on the next pitch.“We had some quality at-bats,” Cubs manager David Ross said. “The back-to-backs were fun.”The Reds tied it in the bottom half with help from a balk called on reliever Anderson Espinoza (0-2).Cincinnati right-hander Justin Dunn was tagged for five runs and seven hits in 3 2/3 innings in his second start since coming off the injured list. He had been sidelined by a right shoulder strain.Chicago right-hander Keegan Thompson lasted just 1 2/3 innings. He was charged with four runs and two hits.“He was getting ahead in the count, 0-2 and 1-2, but he couldn't put them away,” Ross said. “They hit a lot of foul balls that turned into walks. <p>MILWAUKEE — A Los Angeles sports reporter is recovering after he fractured bones in his wrist and cracked several ribs when he slid down a slide before a recent Major League Baseball game in Milwaukee.</p>
<p>Before the Dodgers and Brewers were set to play at American Family Field on Wednesday, SportsNet LA's David Vassegh wanted to slide down “Bernie’s Chalet,” which is used by Brewers mascot Bernie Brewer to celebrate home runs and victories.</p>
<p>Well, it didn't quite go as planned.</p>
<p>According to Vassegh, six of his ribs were cracked and two bones in his right wrist were broken when he crashed into padding after coming down the slide.</p>
<p>“Are you not entertained by me doing my own stunts? It just went a little sideways, as far as the last run down the slide, but I’m doing good,” said Vassegh to his colleague during an interview on Thursday, the Washington Post reported.</p>
<blockquote class="twitter-tweet">
<p lang="en" dir="ltr">Bernie Brewer caught up with <a class="Link" href="https://twitter.com/THEREAL_DV?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">@THEREAL_DV</a> pregame. <img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/15.0.3/72x72/1f91d.png" alt="🤝" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /><img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/15.0.3/72x72/1f601.png" alt="😁" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /> <a class="Link" href="https://t.co/QuLonHoGke">pic.twitter.com/QuLonHoGke</a></p>

</blockquote>
<p>According to the Associated Press, his first time down the slide went well. </p>
<p>But the news outlet reported that Vassegh wanted to go down a second time so he could be filmed by his camera crew coming down.</p>
<p>According to the news outlet, as Vassegh came down, the reporter went sideways, and his right arm crashed into the padding.</p>

IF I HAD YOU, KEVIN, A COUPLE OF NIGHTS AGO THAT SHE’D PLAY TO 1120. NO RAIN. WOULD YOU HAVE BELIEVED IT? I CERTAINLY A POSSIBILITY BECAUSE IN THESE TYPES SET UPS, IT’S REALLY HARD TO SAY EXACTLY WHEN AND WHERE THE STORMS WILL OCCUR. WE KNOW THAT THEY’RE GOING TO HAPPEN. AND AS I SAID IT’S GOING TO RAIN EACH DAY OVER THE WEEKEND. REMEMBER, IT RAINED THIS MORNING AND WE’VE GOT MORE STORMS COMING IN HERE. IN SHORT ORDER. SO IT’S ABOUT TO STORM AGAIN. THIS WILL REPEAT ITSELF ON SATURDAY AND AGAIN ON SUNDAY. SO YOU JUST HAVE TO TUNE IN FOR FREQUENT UPDATES. WE WERE FORTUNATE BECAUSE WE WEDGED OURSELVES BETWEEN TWO STORMS, ONE TO THE SOUTH, ONE AREA OF STORMS TO OUR NORTH. THAT’S STILL ONGOING. BUT NOW THERE ARE STORMS BEGINNING TO DEVELOP WHERE THERE HAS BEEN AVOID RADAR. IT’S VERY QUIET. BUT LET ME SHOW YOU JUST ON OUR DOORSTEP, WE HAVE SOME INTENSE STORMS DROPPING SOUTH OF I-70, WORKING THEIR WAY DOWN INTERSTATE 74 HERE TONIGHT, ALMOST NON LIGHTNING WITH THESE DOWNPOURS. MOST OF THEM ARE JUST BELOW SEVERE THRESHOLD, BUT I’D KEEP AN EYE ON IT. I WON’T RULE OUT BECAUSE IT IS STILL VERY WARM, VERY HUMID TONIGHT. AND THE INGREDIENTS ARE AT LEAST SUPPORTIVE OF STRONG TO MARGINALLY SEVERE STORMS. SO NASTY WEATHER NOW MOVING INTO FAYETTE UNION COUNTY’S LIBERTY OVER TOWARDS CONNERSVILLE. AND YOU CAN SEE HOW THESE STORMS ARE MARCHING THEIR WAY DOWN. NEXT IN LINE, FRANKLIN COUNTY, THEN RIPLEY COUNTY. AND THEN IT LOOKS LIKE EVENTUALLY DOWN TOWARDS THE 275 LOOP AFTER MIDNIGHT. SO LUCKY THIS EVENING THAT WE WERE ABLE TO GET EVERYTHING IN WITHOUT ANY PROBLEMS. TEMPERATURES ARE VERY WARM. SO THOSE STORMS WILL NOT LIKELY WEAKEN. THEY’RE GOING TO KEEP GOING THROUGH THE NIGHT TONIGHT. SO GOOD THING THE CONCERT HAS WRAPPED UP WHEN IT HAS, THIS WILL GIVE FOLKS SOME TIME TO GET HOME AND GET SETTLED BEFORE THE STORMY WEATHER MOVES IN. IT’S 77 DEGREES OUTSIDE. LOOK AT OUR DEW POINT. YOU WALK OUTSIDE TONIGHT, IT FEELS LIKE STORMY WEATHER, RIGHT? IT FEELS LIKE IT COULD STORM AT ANY POINT. SO THE THREAT FOR SHOWERS AND STORMS GOING UP FROM THIS POINT FORWARD THROUGH THE NIGHT TONIGHT, I THINK IN THE MORNING THERE WILL STILL BE SOME LINGERING STORMS AROUND THE AREA. THE FORECAST HASN’T CHANGED. IT’S ALL ABOUT TRACKING STORM CLUSTERS THROUGH THE WEEKEND. IT’S JUST REALLY TRICKY ON WHERE THEY DO DEVELOP AND THE EXACT TIME ON THEM. WE’RE IN THAT RING FIRE. BASICALLY, WE’RE ON THE PERIPHERY OF SOME REAL INTENSE AND HUMIDITY. SO WHEN IT’S NOT STORMING, IT’S GOING TO BE AWFULLY HOT LIKE IT WAS THIS EVENING. BUT WE’LL WATCHING ROUNDS OF SHOWERS AND STORMS COME OUT OF THE MIDWEST. IN FACT, YOU CAN SEE HOW QUIET IT IS. NOW, LOOK WHAT WAS UP THERE THIS MORNING. THAT’S WHAT WAS THERE THIS EVENING. AND NOW WE HAVE STORMS FILLING IN IN BETWEEN THE TWO. SO FUTURE CASH SHOWS YOU WELL, AGAIN, NOT DOING A GOOD JOB ON PREDICTING THESE STORMS BECAUSE BY 1 A.M. THESE STORMS, I CAN ALMOST WITH CERTAINTY SAY THERE WILL BE STORMS IN THE TRI STATE. BUT THE THEME IS IT TURNS STORMY OR THROUGH THE NIGHT PROBABLY WILL HAVE SOME STORMS AROUND IN THE MORNING AS WELL. THEN WE’LL GET A LITTLE BREAK IN THE AFTERNOON, MUCH LIKE WE HAD TODAY WITH SOME STEAMY SUNSHINE. I’M NOT SO SURE. CONCERT GOERS TOMORROW NIGHT WILL BE AS FORTUNATE TONIGHT BECAUSE I DO THINK THERE’S A GREATER TOMORROW NIGHT THAT STORMS COULD HAVE AN IMPACT ON EVENTS AROUND THE AREA. LOOK AT THIS. HERE WE ARE SUNDAY AFTERNOON. MORE STORMS AROUND THE AREA. REMEMBER, ANY TIME WE HAVE THESE STORMS ALL SEVERE WEATHER HAZARDS ARE ON THE TABLE, PRIMARILY WIND AND HAIL CONCERNS. BUT MAYBE NOT JUST LIMITED TO THOSE. SO HUMID WITH STORMS MOVING IN HERE OVERNIGHT AT 68, EARLY RAIN AND STORMS TOMORROW. THEN MUGGY SUNSHINE FOLLOWED BY MORE STORMS. 86 FOR AN AFTERNOON HIGH. HERE’S A LOOK AT YOUR DAY PLANNER SHOWING THE BREAK. KIND OF IN THE AFTERNOON INTO THE EARLY EVENING. HERE’S YOUR SEVEN DAY FORECAST. SO BASICALLY IT’S REPEAT CYCLE SATURDAY, SUNDAY, WEATHER IMPACT DAYS. FORTUNATELY, IT DOES LOOK LIKE MONDAY. WE’LL BREAK THE PATTERN HERE. SHOULD START TO TURN A LITTLE LESS HUMID FOR US AND SHOULD DRY IT OUT. HEADING INTO INDEP

Yordan Alvarez and Alex Bregman delivered big hits and the Houston Astros advanced to the World Series again, finishing a four-game sweep of New York in the AL Championship Series with a 6-5 victory Sunday night aided by another defensive gaffe from the Yankees.Taking advantage of a costly error by second baseman Gleyber Torres to produce the go-ahead rally in the seventh inning, the Astros won their second consecutive pennant and fourth in six years.Rookie shortstop Jeremy Peña hit a three-run homer off ailing Yankees starter Nestor Cortes to help the AL West champions overcome an early 3-0 deficit. Peña was picked as the ALCS MVP.Houston will open the World Series at home Friday night against Bryce Harper and the wild-card Philadelphia Phillies, who beat San Diego earlier in the day to close out the best-of-seven NLCS in five games.Harper broke up the Phillies postseason party on the mound and directed his team to where the true revelry was about to begin for the National League champs.“C'mon, let's go inside! Let's go!” he ordered. With that, Harper walked toward the dugout and raised his arms in jubilation to the soundtrack of Phillies fans screaming “MV3! MV3! " The Phillies scrambled inside for the Broad Street Bubbly that awaited in the clubhouse. Harper made the scene possible because he rose to the moment Philly demanded of him from the time he signed the richest free-agent deal in baseball history. Harper has made the monumental feat of hitting a baseball look so easy in the postseason and with the NL pennant at stake, he delivered with the defining moment of his four-year Philadelphia career.Harper slugged his fifth homer of the postseason, a two-run blast in the eighth inning that turned Citizens Bank Park into a madhouse, and the $330 million slugger powered the Phillies past the San Diego Padres 4-3 on Sunday and into the World Series for the first the time since 2009.One swing. One opposite-field shot. One game-winning home run that about seemed destined from the moment he came to the plate in the eighth inning with the Phillies and their fans beckoning Bryce to deliver in the clutch just one more time.“I hit the ball, and I just looked at my dugout and kind of it’s for all of them,” Harper said. “It’s for this whole team. It’s for this whole organization."Rhys Hoskins also hit a two-run homer in Game 5 of the NL Championship Series to spark Philadelphia’s improbable run to the pennant and a shot at its first World Series championship since 2008.Harper, Hoskins &amp; Crew are coming for a most improbable World Series championship.Houston held a 3-0 lead over the New York Yankees in the ALCS. Game 4 is Sunday night in New York. The World Series will begin Friday night at the home of the AL champion.Harper was named NLCS MVP and he as parked the trophy on a dais, he made it clear the personal awards meant nothing to him without a ring.“I don't really care about this but MLB is making me do it,” Harper said.Philadelphia trailed 3-2 when J.T. Realmuto began the eighth with a single off reliever Robert Suarez. Harper then lined a 2-2, 98 mph sinker the opposite way, into the left-field seats as another sellout crowd of 45,485 shook the stadium.Harper hoped the homer set the stage for other highlights on deck in the next couple of weeks.“We’ve got four more,” the two-time NL MVP told the fans during an on-field celebration, and they roared again. The lefty-swinging Harper connected off a righty — the Padres had left-handed closer Josh Hader warming in the bullpen, but didn't bring him in.“It’s a thought at this point, but that wasn’t what we were thinking,” Padres manager Bob Melvin said. “We were trying to get to four-out position for Hader, and we had a lot of confidence in Suarez.”The Phillies felt the same way about Harper.“Pure chaos, right? I don’t think anybody was surprised,” Hoskins said. “This guy has a knack for coming up in the biggest moments. It’s just what he’s done his whole career, and we’ve seen it plenty of times.”Remember, too: When Harper's thumb was broken by a pitch from San Diego's Blake Snell in late June, there were some concerns that he might not return this season.Instead, the star who signed a 13-year contract to play in Philadelphia delivered — in this season, in this game.Even after Harper's homer put them ahead, it wasn't an easy ending for the Phillies.Reliever David Robertson was pulled after a pair of one-out walks in the ninth. Ranger Suárez made his first relief appearance of the season and retired Trent Grisham on a bunt and got Austin Nola — brother of Phils ace Aaron Nola — on a routine fly to finish it for a huge save. The Phillie Phanatic swayed a National League champions flag as the postseason banger “Dancing On My Own” blared throughout the stadium. Alec Bohm and Nick Castellanos stripped off their shirts and danced in the clubhouse. Cigars were let. Cheap beer was sprayed. The alcohol puddles on the carpet went deeper than the ones caused by the rain in a sloppy, gusty Game 5.Philly, get ready. This sixth-seeded Phillies — yes, that is a thing this season — feel they're just getting started.Harper, who turned 30 last week, is batting 439 (18 for 41) with six doubles, five homers, 11 RBIs and 10 runs scored over 11 postseason games. He has hit in 10 straight and has reached base in 11 straight. And the feared designated hitter can keep those streaks alive when he plays in his first World Series.“To a certain degree, it’s getting overlooked because of who he is and the star that he is,” Phillies manager Rob Thomson said. “He’s a guy that’s a big star that’s delivered. Can’t say enough about that.”Philadelphia finished third in the NL East at 87-75, a full 14 games behind the 101-win Braves this season, and were the last club in the majors to make the 12-team playoff field. After a 2-0 sweep of NL Central champion St. Louis in MLB’s newly created wild-card round, the Phillies needed only four games to knock out Atlanta, the defending World Series champs. Now they'll try to become the first team that finished in third place to win a World Series. The Padres took a 3-2 lead in a sloppy seventh inning as rain pounded Citizens Bank Park and turned portions of the infield, notably around third base, into a mud pit.But it was Phillies reliever Seranthony Dominguez’s slippery grip that almost cost the Phillies.Starter Zack Wheeler was fantastic again and struck out eight over six innings. He was lifted with a 2-1 lead after Jake Cronenworth's leadoff single in the seventh.Dominguez couldn’t find his feel with the ball as the rain picked up, puddles formed near third base and the infield dirt turned to mush. He threw one wild pitch and Josh Bell lined a tying RBI double to right that made it 2-1.Dominguz then threw two more wild pitches that allowed pinch-runner Jose Azocar to scamper home for the 3-2 lead. The righty reliever threw only three wild pitches in 51 innings all season -- then uncorked three in the seventh.Things got tense in Philly. But they always had Harper in their back pocket like a lucky charm.“Harper had a huge moment there,” Padres slugger Manny Machado said. “You just have to tip your hat.”Hoskins, Harper, Wheeler have left a trail of indelible moment at Citizens Bank as they improved to 5-0 at home, where they will play World Series Games 3, 4 and 5.Game 5 of the NLCS was no exception. The Phillies caught a break in the third when NL home run champion Kyle Schwarber was called out on a two-out stolen-base attempt. The call was overturned on replay, and the Phillies had new life.Hoskins, who came hitting a quite memorable .171, smashed one into the left field seats off starter Yu Darvish as the crowd went wild. He hopped down the line as he mouthed some words to his teammates in the dugout and twirled his bat -- not unlike the steadily-spinning rally towels -- as he gave them a 2-0 lead.Wheeler gave up Soto’s solo homer in the inning that made it 2-1. Padres pitcher Joe Musgrove snapped a Polaroid picture of Soto in the dugout.Try as they might, the Padres weren’t ready for their close up.The Phillies were picture perfect. Second baseman Jean Segura cleared a path on the infield as the rest of the Phillies sat near the mound, took off on a running start and slid head first into the team photo. Then it was time to party.Harper demanded it.

File video above: Houston and Philly fans celebrate World SeriesYordan Alvarez hit a towering go-ahead homer and the Houston Astros clinched their second World Series title in six seasons and got Dusty Baker his first crown as a manager with a 4-1 win over the Philadelphia Phillies in Game 6 on Saturday night. As Alvarez's 450-foot blast in the sixth inning disappeared, Astros starter Framber Valdez jumped and wildly screamed in the dugout as fans in the crowd of 42,948 went into a frenzy waving their orange rally towels.Baker finally got his first title in his 25th season as a manager, the past three since being hired by the Astros to help the team regain credibility after the sign-stealing scandal that cost manager A.J. Hinch and general manager Jeff Luhnow their jobs, and made Houston the most reviled team in baseball. The 73-year-old Baker, who had been to the World Series twice before as a skipper, is the oldest championship manager.Houston's coaching and training staffs circled around Baker after Nick Castellanos flied out to end it, jumping up and down, and chanting “Dusty! Dusty! Dusty!” in the dugout before they joined the players on the field.Alvarez’s homer cleared the batter’s eye in straightaway center, the backdrop that extends 40 feet above the field, and made it 3-1. It was the first time the Cuban slugger connected since the first two games this postseason.Christian Vázquez added an RBI single later in the inning to make it 4-1.Valdez earned his second win of this Series. He had been in the dugout only a few minutes after throwing his 93rd and final pitch while striking out nine over six innings. But the lefty had walked off the mound with the wild-card Phillies up 1-0 on Kyle Schwarber’s solo homer leading off the sixth.Schwarber, who hit his third homer in the past four games, rounded the bases waving his raised empty hand in the same motion as the fans with their towels. But by the time Schwarber batted in the eighth, the NL's home run leader was reduced to bunting, trying for a hit to stir a dormant Phillies offense. His bunt went foul with two strikes, resulting in a strikeout. In the sixth, Houston got two runners on base against starter Zack Wheeler for the first time in the game, with Jose Altuve reaching on a forceout after a hit batter and rookie Jeremy Peña singling.Phillies manager Rob Thomson went to left-handed reliver Jose Alvarado to face the lefty slugger for the fourth time in the series — Alvarez had popped out twice and been hit by a pitch the first three times. And Alvarado had allowed only three homers to left hitters in his six big league seasons, until his 2-1 pitch, when Alvarez crushed the 99 mph sinker.Alvarez hadn’t homered since Game 2 of the AL Division Series against Seattle, when his two-run shot in the sixth inning put them up to stay. That came after his game-ending, three-run shot in Game 1 for an 8-7 win.Houston won an American League-best 106 games and reached its fourth World Series during a span in which it made it to the AL Championship Series six seasons in a row. The Astros made their only other World Series appearance in 2005, while still in the National League, and were swept in four games by the Chicago White Sox.This was their third ALCS and second consecutive World Series since former Astros pitcher Mike Fiers revealed after the 2019 season, when he had gone from Houston for two years since being part of their 2017 championship, that the team had used a camera in center field to steal signs and signal hitters on which pitches to expect by banging on a garbage can.Philadelphia was 22-29 when Joe Girardi was fired in early June and replaced by bench coach Thomson, the 59-year-old baseball lifer getting his first chance a big league manager — he was on the Yankees big league staff for 10 seasons with Girardi, and was part of their last World Series and title in 2009.The Phillies finished the regular season 65-46 under Thomson, their 87 wins good for the sixth and final spot in the NL playoffs, on way to their first World Series since 2009.

<p>In the sixth, Houston got two runners on base against starter Zack Wheeler for the first time in the game, with Jose Altuve reaching on a forceout after a hit batter and rookie Jeremy Peña singling.</p>
<p>Phillies manager Rob Thomson went to left-handed reliver Jose Alvarado to face the lefty slugger for the fourth time in the series — Alvarez had popped out twice and been hit by a pitch the first three times.</p>
<p>And Alvarado had allowed only three homers to left hitters in his six big league seasons, until his 2-1 pitch, when Alvarez crushed the 99 mph sinker.</p>
<p>Alvarez hadn’t homered since Game 2 of the AL Division Series against Seattle, when his two-run shot in the sixth inning put them up to stay. That came after his game-ending, three-run shot in Game 1 for an 8-7 win.</p>

<p>Houston won an American League-best 106 games and reached its fourth World Series during a span in which it made it to the AL Championship Series six seasons in a row. The Astros made their only other World Series appearance in 2005, while still in the National League, and were swept in four games by the Chicago White Sox.</p>
<p>This was their third ALCS and second consecutive World Series since former Astros pitcher Mike Fiers revealed after the 2019 season, when he had gone from Houston for two years since being part of their 2017 championship, that the team had used a camera in center field to steal signs and signal hitters on which pitches to expect by banging on a garbage can.</p>
<p>Philadelphia was 22-29 when Joe Girardi was fired in early June and replaced by bench coach Thomson, the 59-year-old baseball lifer getting his first chance a big league manager — he was on the Yankees big league staff for 10 seasons with Girardi, and was part of their last World Series and title in 2009.</p>
<p>The Phillies finished the regular season 65-46 under Thomson, their 87 wins good for the sixth and final spot in the NL playoffs, on way to their first World Series since 2009. </p>

INTRODUCES US TO GAVIN FOR WE LEARNED ABOUT AS QUICKLY THAT GAVIN FORD DOES NOT LIVE IN ORDINARY LIFE. AS WE LEARNED THAT GAVIN FORD IS AN EXTRAORDINARY KID. I’M LIKE ANYBODY ELSE. I DON’T WANT YOU TO TREAT ME DIFFERENTLY. HE WAS THE FIRST KID TO PLAY IN THE LITTLE LEAGUE MAJORS IN A WHEELCHAIR IN HIS HOMETOWN OF NORTH REDDING. FUNNY STORY, ACTUALLY. MY FIRST AT BAT. FIRST PITCH, I GOT HIT RIGHT IN THE NECK. JUST THE FASTBALL RIGHT TO THE NECK. AND I WAS KIND OF A WELCOME. YOU’RE HERE. IT’S AMAZING THAT HE’S HERE. BORN WITH SPINA BIFIDA, A NEURAL DEFECT OF THE SPINE. HE USES EVERY OUNCE OF ENERGY TO DO ALL THE THINGS HE LOVES TO DO THROUGH ADAPTIVE BASKETBALL IN LACROSSE, SURFING AND BASEBALL, AND HIS FAVORITE SLED HOCKEY. GAVIN IS A 15 YEAR OLD ATHLETE IN SPITE OF YEARS OF SURGERIES AND MONTHS SPENT AWAY FROM RINKS IN COURTS. AND IN 2020, TWO OUT OF 365 DAYS OF THE YEAR, GAVIN WAS BEDBOUND FOR 192 OF THEM. STILL, HE HOPES ONE DAY TO MAKE IT ALL THE WAY TO THE PARALYMPICS. BUT HIS GOALS DON’T END THERE. I LEARNED ENGINEERING ALL THIS YEAR. I WANT TO BE AN ARCHITECT. THAT’S MY DREAM JOB. NOT EVERY BUILDING IS ACCESSIBLE, SO I DON’T REALLY WANT THAT TO BE A STRUGGLE FOR ANYBODY BECAUSE I KNOW I HAVE TO STRUGGLE WITH THAT. HE’S AMAZING, BUT WHAT I REALLY RESPECT IS HIS WILLINGNESS TO SHARE HIS OPPORTUNITY FOR THE BENEFIT OF OTHERS. SO WHY DO WE DECIDE TO INTRODUCE YOU TO GAVIN FORD TODAY? BECAUSE KIDS LIKE GAVIN ARE NOT JUST HERE TO INSPIRE OTHER KIDS LIKE GAVIN. THEY’RE HERE TO SHOW THE REST OF THE WORLD HOW TO LIVE IN NORTH ANDOVER JOSH BROGADIR WHY WCVB SPORTSCENTER 5? WELL PUT.

<p>Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, Rafael Palmeiro, and Curt Schilling won't see their names in Cooperstown as they were all denied admission into the Baseball Hall of Fame Sunday.</p>
<p>The 16-panel Hall of Fame's Contemporary Era Committee announced the four superstars did not make the cut, with Schilling getting seven votes. Bonds, Palmeiro, and Clemens got less than four votes each, CBS Sports and the Associated Press reported.</p>
<p>According to CBS Sports, Sunday marked the first time Bonds and Clemens, who have been accused of using performance-enhancing drugs, face the committee, which is separate from the Baseball Writers' Association of America Hall of Fame ballot.</p>
<p>The committee consists of Hall members, executives and writers, the Associated Press reported.</p>
<p>One player who did make it into the Hall was Fred McGriff, the only player of eight to make it into the Hall on Sunday, the news outlets reported.</p>
<p>“It’s all good. It’s been well worth the wait,” McGriff told the AP.</p>
<p>McGriff played 19 seasons in MLB before retiring in 2004.</p>

<p>NEW YORK (AP) — Slick-fielding third baseman Scott Rolen was elected to baseball’s Hall of Fame on Tuesday with five votes to spare above the 75% needed.</p>
<p>The seven-time All-Star and eight-time Gold Glove winner appeared on 297 of 389 ballots cast by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America for 76.3%. A player needed 292 votes for election.</p>
<p>He became the 18th third baseman elected to the Hall, the fewest of any position.</p>
<p>Rolen’s 76.3% of the vote was the smallest margin for an electee since Al Simmons got 199 votes in 1953 for 75.38%, one more vote than needed. Ferguson Jenkins (75.4% in 1991), Ralph Kiner (75.41% in 1975) and Willie Keeler (75.55% in 1939) made it with one ballot to spare.</p>
<p>First baseman Todd Helton was second with 281 (72.2%) and reliever Billy Wagner third with 265 (68.1%)</p>
<p>Rolen will join Fred McGriff, elected last month by the contemporary baseball era committee, as the inductees at Cooperstown on July 23.</p>
<p>Among 14 players appearing on the ballot for the first time, Carlos Beltrán received 181 votes. Beltrán’s vote total likely was impacted by his role in the Houston Astros cheating scandal en route to the 2017 World Series title.</p>
<p>Rolen increased his votes from 63.2% last year and 10.2% in his first ballot appearance in 2018.</p>
<p>Helton moved up from 52% and can have five more appearances, while Wagner rose from 51% and has two additional chances.</p>
<p>Next year’s first-time eligibles include Adrián Beltré, Joe Mauer, David Wright, José Bautista and Matt Holliday.</p>

<p>Minor League Baseball player Anderson Comas is the latest professional athlete to come out as gay.</p>
<p>Comas joined the White Sox organization about five years ago. In his post, Anderson wrote about wanting to normalize gay athletes in sports. </p>
<p>"I enjoy my work a lot, being a professional baseball player is the best thing that happened to me so I just wanna say something to those people that says that gay people can not be someone in this life," Comas wrote. "Well look at me I’m Gay and I’m a professional athlete."</p>
<p>Thousands of people commented on Comas' post, noting his courage in revealing something so personal. </p>
<p>Chris Getz, White Sox assistant general manager, said Comas revealed his sexuality to the organization last year. </p>
<p>"I was very pleased that he was comfortable sharing with us in player development," Getz said. "I also was happy at the reaction across the organization, which as you would expect was to support, help and congratulate a teammate."</p>
<p>Comas, who was born in the Dominican Republic, is currently a relief pitcher. The 23-year-old had a 6.35 ERA as a pitcher in 2022. </p>
<p>Being publicly gay in professional sports is a rarity. There are no openly gay players in Major League Baseball. Carl Nassib was the first active player in the NFL to come out in 2021. Michael Sam came out and was drafted St. Louis Rams, but he never played in a regular season game.</p>

The city of Nashua, New Hampshire, is teaming up with the Black Heritage Trail to make Holman Stadium a new stop.Historians said the stadium and the Nashua Dodgers played a key role in the integration of U.S. sports, but that distinction almost belonged to a different team.Holman Stadium has been home to several teams in its 86-year history, but its first team has forever lodged itself into baseball lore. In 1946, the Nashua Dodgers welcomed Black players Roy Campanella and Don Newcombe to the team.Their additions made the Nashua Dodgers the first integrated professional sports team of 20th century America. To honor the accomplishment, the city of Nashua and the Black Heritage Trail are teaming up to make Holman Stadium a stop on the Black Heritage Trail of New Hampshire."Being part of the Black Heritage Trail as a result of the history of Holman Stadium is a great honor and something we're very pleased with," said Mayor Jim Donchess.According to Minor League Baseball, then-general manager Branch Rickey chose to send Campanella and Newcombe to Nashua after a Dodgers affiliate in Illinois told him they would not be welcomed on the team."I think Nashua has always been and still is a community that's very welcoming to new people and it does not exclude anyone, and that was true back even in the 1940s," Donchess said.In an interview in the mid-2000s, Newcombe reflected on his time in Nashua."It turned out for the better that we went to Nashua," he said. "I always thanked God for Nashua. We had a lot of fun. We were considered people, not Black people.""This is something the city is very proud of, that Don Newcomb had a good experience here, unlike he might have in other places, but somehow, they knew that this was likely to be the result," Donchess said.Newcombe and Campanella won a couple of championships with the Nashua Dodgers before being called up to the major leagues. Newcombe went on to win a Cy Young Award, rookie of the year and a most valuable player award.Campanella won three MVPs and is enshrined in the Baseball Hall of Fame."We were lucky to have them," Donchess said. "And then they went on to the major leagues and, again, had very successful careers there."Despite their success in the major leagues, Newcombe and Campanella fell victim to the same prejudice that led the Dodgers to bring them to Nashua in the first place."Not being able to stay in a hotel because the man did not want us to use the swimming pool," Newcombe. "Those kinds of degrading things certainly had an impact on our thinking. We knew we had to make change. We knew we had to succeed."To coincide with the Black Heritage Trail plaque, Nashua City Hall is working to collect memorabilia for a permanent display. Donchess said the city is looking for Nashua baseball artifacts, specifically ones related to Campanella, Newcombe — the Dodgers and Holman Stadium."There is a gentleman here, Craig Michaud, who has an entire collection of Nashua memorabilia, and I'm going to be going visiting him pretty soon," Donchess said. The Black Heritage Trail plaque will be unveiled on May 30 before a Nashua Silver Knights game at Holman Stadium.

IN THE MORNING. SO IF YOU’RE GOING HAVE FUN, IF YOU’RE NOT GOING, STEER CLEAR OF THAT. 741 KINGS ISLAND DRIVE AREA BECAUSE THE TRAFFIC IS GOING TO BE BIG TIME. DAY ONE, ESPECIALLY IF WE HAVE WEATHER LIKE TODAY. BUT YOU DON’T THINK THAT’S GOING TO BE THE CASE? YOU KNOW WHAT I THINK? I DON’T THINK SATURDAY’S A WATCH OUT FOR SOME FOLKS THAT ARE GOING. I THINK YOU’LL GET PLENTY OF HOURS IN AT THE THEME PARK. THE PROBLEM IS AT SOME POINT WEATHER WILL BE AND WILL HAVE AN IMPACT OUT THERE. THE TIMING ON THAT IS STILL A LITTLE UP IN THE AIR. SO WE’VE GOT A FEW MORE DAYS TO REALLY NAIL DOWN THAT TIMING. BUT I TELL YOU WHAT, IN A SURE SIGN THIS SUMMER MUST BE CLOSE. KINGS ISLAND IS OPENING BACK UP. AND HOW ABOUT THIS BY THE RIVER? I’LL TELL YOU WHAT YOU’VE NEEDED THESE A LOT. THE PAST SEVERAL DAYS. THANKS A LOT TO OUR PHOTO JOURNALISTS. AND I’M ASKING FOR THIS SHOT HERE. BEAUTIFUL SHOT ALONG THE OHIO RIVER. NICE PAIR OF SUNGLASSES IN THAT SETTING SUN OUT THERE. YOU KNOW WHAT? WE’LL HIT THE REPEAT BUTTON ON THIS WEATHER FOR TOMORROW. TONIGHT, WHILE IT’S NOT A HUGE JUMP. IT IS JUST A SIGN OF WHERE WE’RE GOING WITH THE TEMPERATURES EVEN HERE TONIGHT. TEMPERATURES ARE RUNNING, YOU KNOW, AROUND FIVE DEGREES WARMER THAN THEY WERE LAST NIGHT FOR A LOT OF US FOR EXAMPLE, HERE IN CINCINNATI, WE’RE ABOUT THREE DEGREES WARMER. WHY IS THAT IMPORTANT? BECAUSE OUR NIGHTS, WHILE THEY HAVE BEEN RELATIVELY CHILLY, THEY’RE GOING TO BE A LITTLE BIT MILDER AS WE CLOSE OUT THE WEEK HERE. SO REAL SPRING IT IS, IN FACT, THAT WILL ALSO LEND ITSELF TO EVEN WARMER TEMPERATURES DURING THE DAY OVER THE NEXT SEVERAL DAYS. SO TOMORROW LOOKS LIKE AN IDEAL DAY, 74. TOMORROW, BEAUTIFUL. 77 ON THURSDAY. FRIDAY, WE’RE IN THE MID SEVENTIES, EVEN HEADING INTO THE WEEKEND. WE’RE IN THE MIDDLE TO UPPER SEVENTIES. I CAN’T RULE OUT GETTING TO 80, ESPECIALLY IF WE GET A LITTLE MORE SUN ON ONE OF THESE DAYS. ESPECIALLY ON SATURDAY, MAYBE. BUT THEN EVIDENCE OF THE CHANGES THAT ARE COMING. NOTICE ON SUNDAY, TEMPERATURES BEGIN TO TAKE A STEP BACK. AND IN FACT, IT WILL BE EVEN COOLER THAN THAT DURING THE DAY ON SUNDAY. BUT THAT’S WHERE WE’LL START. ALL RIGHT. SO HERE’S WHAT TO EXPECT. NICE WEATHER THROUGH THURSDAY. WE’LL GET OUR FIRST CHANCE AT SOME SHOWERS ON FRIDAY. DON’T THINK THAT’S A BIG DEAL. THE REAL IMPACTFUL RAIN MOVES IN OVER THE WEEKEND WITH THE THREAT FOR SHOWERS AND STORMS. AND I’LL KEEP AN EYE ON SATURDAY. AGAIN, I DON’T THINK SATURDAY’S A WASHOUT, BUT I DO THINK WE MIGHT HAVE TO CONTINUE WITH THE THREAT FOR SOME STRONGER STORMS ON SATURDAY. SO STAY TUNED TO EVOLVING FORECAST. BECAUSE NEXT WEEK IT WILL BE COOLER. SO NO RAIN CHANCES TOMORROW. THURSDAY, I STILL THINK YOU’RE GREAT FOR BASEBALL. FIREWORKS FRIDAY NIGHT. ANY IMPACT FROM SPOTTY SHOWERS SHOULD BE JUST THAT. RELATIVELY LOW. AGAIN, I THINK MORE OF US STAY DRY THAN WET. SATURDAY IS THE DAY WHEN THE WEATHER HAS THE GREATEST IMPACT ON OUR AREA. SO FOR NOW, HIGH PRESSURE THE WEATHER. GOOD GUY, BASICALLY HANGING IN CHARGE AND WITH A LIGHT SOUTHWEST BREEZE AND PLENTY OF APRIL SUNSHINE OVER THE NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS. ONLY ONE WAY FOR THOSE TEMPERATURES TO GO AND THAT IS UP. SO THERE WE ARE TONIGHT. JUST SHY OF 60, WE’RE AT 59 RIGHT NOW. SO HERE’S YOUR 12 HOUR FORECAST AS WELL. SLIP DOWN INTO THE LOW TO MID FIFTIES, WILL GET DOWN INTO THE MID FORTIES RIGHT BEFORE THE SUN COMES UP. FUTURE CASTS, AS YOU’LL SEE HERE, IT’S VERY QUIET. FEW PASSING HIGH CLOUDS. BUT ALL IN ALL, YOU’LL NEED THE SUNGLASSES AGAIN TOMORROW. YOU NEED THEM IN HERE ON THURSDAY AS WELL. FRIDAY IS THE FIRST DAY WE START TO SEE SOME EVIDENCE OF CHANGE AND NOTICE A LITTLE MORE IN THE WAY OF CLOUD COVER STREAMING IN. AND I CAN’T RULE OUT AGAIN THE CHANCE FOR MAYBE A STRAY SHOWER FRIDAY AFTERNOON. UNTIL THEN, IT IS JUST THAT QUIET OUTSIDE. COOL. LATE TONIGHT, DOWN TO ABOUT 45 BY MORNING TOMORROW. VERY MILD AGAIN INTO THE MID 70. SHOULD BE ANOTHER AWESOME DAY FROM START TO FINISH. HERE’S YOUR SEVEN DAY FORECAST. SO SATURDAY IS THE NEXT WEATHER IMPACT DAY AS THAT’S WHEN WE’LL HAVE THE THREAT FOR THOSE SHOWERS AND STORMS. AND AGAIN, WE’LL KEEP AN EYE ON THAT. SOME OF THOSE STORMS COULD BE FAIRLY ROBUST ON SATURDAY. SO THAT’S SOMETHING TO WATCH. AND THEN OBVIOUSLY, COOLER WEATHER SCOOTS IN HERE I THINK, FOR MUCH OF NE

The Cincinnati Reds showed support for a 10-year-old girl with terminal cancer by inviting her to throw out the ceremonial first pitch before Sunday's game.Ten-year-old Aralyn Slack was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor last month and was given just 10 months to live.Aralyn, who plays softball, has created a bucket list of things she wants to do over the next year, and many community members and businesses have stepped up to help her cross things off her list."People have been amazing. She had a bucket list. One checked off," Aralyn's dad said.Slack has DIPG, the same kind of brain tumor basketball player Lauren Hill was diagnosed with eight years ago.Doctors say Slack has less than a year to live.Earlier this month, WLWT, a Hearst sister station, spoke with some of Slack's softball coaches and teammates, who have been doing whatever they could to support their friend.“She is the kindest person I know and the greatest friend,” said her teammate Livy Waits. “She's a goofball.”The team was determined to make their home opener, and Slack’s last game before treatment, one to remember.“We’re going to treat it as a varsity game,” Waits said. The game was originally supposed to be played on the road, an hour away in New Richmond, Ohio. But Waits asked if the opposing team would mind if they played at home.“I can't explain how important it is for us adults to put on the show for her and allow her to experience everything that she can get out of it,” Waits said.“To me, it's not about the game,” said Michael Trummer, head coach of 9U Felicity Diamond Does. “It's about this little girl having the time of her life.”

EVERY DAY, DOESN’T COMPLAIN. SO EVERY MORNING, 40 TIMES HE HAS TO DO THAT. THEN HE COMES IN, HE DOES HIS NORMAL. JUST SO GLAD THAT HE IS BACK WITH US. YOU’RE NOT GOING TO WANT TO MISS THAT STORY. ALL RIGHT. SO WHAT ABOUT THE WEEKEND FORECAST HERE AT RAINY, ALREADY OUT THERE TONIGHT IN SOME PARTS? IS THAT GOING TO LINGER INTO SATURDAY? MAYBE THE FIRST FEW HOURS OF SATURDAY MORNING? BUT I THINK THE REST OF YOUR SATURDAY, FOR EXAMPLE, IT’S GRADUATION SEASON. FOLKS ARE HAVING GRADUATION PARTIES. THE WHOLE FAMILY’S OVER. NEIGHBORHOODS OVER. THOSE ARE FINE. TOMORROW EVENING, YOU WON’T HAVE ANY PROBLEMS WITH THOSE TYPES OF OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES IN A BIG SOCCER MATCH. OF COURSE, TOMORROW NIGHT TO, NO PROBLEMS WHATSOEVER. WEATHER WISE. WHAT A BONUS FRIDAY NIGHT. WE WERE ABLE TO SQUEEZE OUT AROUND HERE, RIGHT? IT WAS FANTASTIC. AND YOU KNOW WHAT? IT EVEN FELT LIKE AN SUMMER LIKE TYPE OF EVENING FOR US HERE IN THE TRI-STATE. THE RAIN HELD OFF LONG ENOUGH TO GET THE FIREWORKS, TO GET THE REDS AND YANKEES IN. NOW WE’RE STARTING TO SEE IT FINALLY SCOOT INTO PARTS OF SOUTHEAST INDIANA. I DO WANT TO DRAW YOUR ATTENTION TO SOMETHING, THOUGH. AND IF YOU LOOK AT THIS GREEN LINE, THAT STRETCHING FROM MIAMI’S BERG, THE MIDDLE, MIDDLETOWN TO HAMILTON NOW ENTERING THE WESTERN PART OF HAMILTON COUNTY, IF YOU GO OUT AS THIS PASSES, PROBABLY IN THE NEXT COUPLE OF MINUTES, FOR SOME OF US, YOU’RE GOING TO FEEL A NICE LITTLE COOL BREEZE. THAT’S FROM THE RAIN AND THOSE DOWNPOURS THAT ARE BACK IN INDIANA STILL AT THIS POINT. BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY, WHAT IT SIGNALS TO ME HERE IN THE WEATHER CENTER IS THE FACT THAT. NOTICE HOW THE RED AND YELLOW IS REALLY FALLING OUT OF THESE THOSE THUNDERSTORMS HAVE COLLAPSED, MEANING THAT, YOU KNOW WHAT, THEY’RE NOT GOING TO GET ANY STRONGER THAN WHAT THEY ARE RIGHT NOW. SO I DON’T EXPECT A LOT OF THUNDER AND LIGHTNING THROUGH THE NIGHT TONIGHT. THERE COULD BE SOME A COUPLE OF RUMBLES, BUT NOTHING YOU NEED TO BE WORRIED ABOUT. SO HERE COMES THE RAIN BEGINNING TO MOVE IN TOWARDS OXFORD. THERE ARE A FEW POCKETS OF HEAVY RAIN AS YOU HEAD UP 27 INTO THE NORTHWESTERN PARTS OF BUTLER COUNTY. THEN SOME POCKETS OF HEAVY TO MODERATE RAIN DOWN AROUND THE BROOKVILLE AREA. BROOKVILLE LAKE. BUT AGAIN, NOTICE AS THIS ALL KEEPS MOVING EAST, IT KEEPS REALLY FADING AWAY. SO WHILE IT LOOKS LIKE AROUND MIDNIGHT, THE RAIN BEGINS FOR SOME OF US, AS THIS IS FALLING APART, THAT COULD DELAY THE ARRIVAL FOR SOME OF YOU. AGAIN, SAME STORY OUT TOWARDS GREENSBURG, MOVING IN TOWARDS THE BATESVILLE AREA. IT’S A LITTLE WET OUT HERE NOW AND RIPLEY COUNTY, BUT THIS WILL TREND THE TREND WILL BE FOR THE RAIN TO GET LESS AND LESS INTENSE OVERALL AS SEE THIS AREA OF SHOWERS SCOOT ITS WAY ACROSS THE HEART OF THE TRI-STATE HERE THROUGH THE REMAINDER OF THE NIGHT. SO OUTSIDE RIGHT NOW, HERE’S A LIVE LOOK DOWNTOWN WOULD KNOW IT WAS A BOUT TO RAIN ON YOU OUTSIDE 67 DEGREES OFFICIALLY HERE AND CINCINNATI AT THE MOMENT. HERE’S A 12 HOUR FORECAST. TEMPERATURES WILL STAY IN THE SIXTIES TONIGHT. THEN WE’LL DROP INTO THE FIFTIES RIGHT BEFORE THE SUN COMES UP IN THE MORNING. AND AGAIN, IT’S ONLY THE FIRST HOUR OR TWO OF THE DAY WHERE RAIN WILL IMPACT YOUR SATURDAY. YOU CAN SEE THOSE SHOWERS IF THEY AS THEY FALLING APART, AS THEY MOVE OUR WAY, THE COLD FRONT IS STILL LAGGING A LITTLE BIT BEHIND. WATCH FUTURE CASTS HERE. YOU CAN SEE IT BASICALLY IS DISPLAYING EXACTLY WHAT WE’RE SEEING HAPPENING HERE ON RADAR. SO FOR SOME OF US, IT VERY WELL COULD BE EVEN LATER THAN MIDNIGHT, MAYBE TWO, 3 A.M. BEFORE THE RAIN GETS HERE. AGAIN, I’M NOT EXPECTING A LOT OUT THERE WET FIRST THING SATURDAY MORNING, ESPECIALLY EAST OF CINCINNATI, WEST OF CINCINNATI. YOU’RE DRYING OUT PRETTY QUICKLY BY SUNRISE BY 9 A.M., THE RAIN IS BACK. BASICALLY JUST THE BACK EDGE IN OUR EASTERNMOST COMMUNITIES. SO THAT LEAVES THE REST OF YOUR SATURDAY TO BE BEAUTIFUL. GREAT FOR. THE SOCCER GAME TOMORROW NIGHT, THEN BEAUTIFUL WEATHER IN HERE ON SUNDAY AS WELL. SO JUST A LITTLE RAIN, A NICE WEEKEND AND THEN IT LOOKS LIKE WE DIAL UP THE HEAT AS WE WORK OUR WAY TOWARDS MEMORIAL DAY. SO COOLER LATE TONIGHT AS THE RAIN ARRIVES THERE. COULD BE A RUMBLE OF THUNDER OUT THERE TOMORROW. ANY WET WEATHER OUT EARLY SUNSHINE GETS IN HERE FAST, I SHOULD SAY, AS BASICALLY SALVAGE A VERY NICE LOOKING SATURDAY. AND THAT TAKES US THROUGH THE REST OF YOUR WEEKEND, YOUR SEVEN DAY FORECAST HERE IT IS, MIKE AND SHERRY. WHAT A LOVELY SEVEN DAY, ESPECIALLY THIS TIME OF THE YEAR. LOOKING GOOD RIGHT NOW. AND I KNOW THIS IS WHAT FESTIVAL ORGANIZERS WOULD WANT FOR THE TASTE OF CINCINNATI GOING INTO MEMORI

Video above: Sausage vendor near Boston's Fenway Park feeling the bite of MLB lockoutMajor League Baseball on Friday canceled spring training games through at least March 17 as negotiations on a new collective bargaining agreement between the league and the players' union drag on.On Tuesday, MLB postponed the March 31 Opening Day and canceled the first two series of regular-season games after a deal wasn't finalized.A collective bargain agreement determines players' terms and conditions of employment. Players will not be paid for canceled games, MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred noted. The league indicated that it's prepared to continue negotiations while the union said that team owners are trying to crack the players' united front."We worked hard to avoid an outcome that's bad for our fans, bad for our players and bad for our clubs," Manfred told reporters earlier this week. "I want to assure our fans that our failure to reach an agreement was not due to a lack of effort by either party."The league had initially canceled all spring training games through March 7, and MLB's Opening Day was slated for March 31. The commissioner said games were canceled and not postponed because it is not feasible to reschedule interleague games. The earliest spring training games could start is currently March 18.The players' union on Tuesday criticized the league's decision to postpone Opening Day and the cancellation of regular reason games, saying in a statement that players — and fans — are "disgusted, but sadly not surprised.""From the beginning of these negotiations, Players' objectives have been consistent — to promote competition, provide fair compensation for young Players, and to uphold the integrity of our market system," the union said. "Against the backdrop of growing revenues and record profits, we are seeking nothing more than a fair agreement."The league locked out the players on Dec. 2, preventing them from using team facilities and keeping free agents from signing new contracts. The halt stems from disagreements over how to distribute an estimated $11 billion in annual revenue.Owners say they have been battered by the decline of in-person attendance due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and they have pushed to sign a new CBA similar to the most recent one.Players, meanwhile, have seen their salaries decline in recent years, particularly for non-star players. The union has pushed to change the league's restrictive rules around free agency and cut down on financial penalties for teams that spend heavily.

Major League Baseball canceled more Spring Training games on Friday due to the ongoing labor dispute between owners and players, the league said."While negotiations have yet to result in an agreement, we are committed to working around the clock through Monday's deadline," MLB said in a statement.Last week, MLB announced the cancelation of some scheduled preseason games. The games, which were set to begin on Feb. 26 with some exhibition games beginning a day earlier, would no longer start earlier than March 5. Now the league has canceled games through March 7."We hope to preserve the full regular season that our fans deserve and the four weeks of Spring Training that players will need to get ready," the league said.Members of the players' union, the Major League Baseball Players Association, and the league are currently holding face-to-face meetings in Jupiter, Florida, to negotiate a new collective bargaining agreement contract."All 30 Clubs remain unified in their strong desire to bring players back to the field and fans back to the stands. Because we are seeking an agreement that is fair to each side, we have been responsive to the stated goals of players," the MLB said. The league has set a Monday deadline to reach a deal on an agreement with the players' union so there could be typical 162-game season, a source familiar with the situation told CNN.CNN has reached out to the the MLBPA for comment but has not yet received a response.MLB's Opening Day is scheduled for March 31.

Major League Baseball said only five days remain to salvage March 31 openers and a full season, telling locked out players that games would be canceled if a labor contract is not agreed to by the end of Monday. After the third straight day of negotiations with little movement, MLB went public with what it had told the union on Feb. 12."A deadline is a deadline. Missed games are missed games. Salary will not be paid for those games," an MLB spokesman said after Wednesday's bargaining ended. The spokesman spoke on behalf of MLB on the condition the spokesman not be identified by name.Players have not accepted Monday as a deadline and have suggested any missed games could be made up as part of doubleheaders, a method MLB said it will not agree to.The union told MLB if games are missed and salaries are lost, clubs should not expect players to agree to management's proposals to expand the postseason and to allow advertisements on uniforms and helmets.Bargaining is scheduled to continue Thursday, and both sides said they are prepared to meet through Monday.A shortened season would be baseball's second in three years following a 2020 schedule cut from 162 games to 60 because of the coronavirus pandemic. The last seasons truncated by labor strife were during the strike that ended the 1994 schedule on Aug. 12 and caused the start of the following season to be delayed from April 2 to April 25. The 1995 schedule was reduced from 162 games to 144.Players are paid only during the regular season, accruing 1/162nd of their salary daily. Players would be subject to losing as much as $232,975 daily in the case of Mets pitcher Max Scherzer, or as little as $3,441 for a player at a $640,000 minimum.Baseball's work stoppage was in its 84th day, and the three sessions this week increased the total on core economic issues to just nine since the lockout began Dec. 2.Spring training workouts had been scheduled to start on Feb. 16, and MLB already has canceled the first week of exhibitions, which were to begin Friday.Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred said on Feb. 10 a minimum of four weeks of training are needed before starting the season. A deal by Monday would allow that plus a few days for players to report to camps in Arizona and Florida.Manfred has spoken publicly just once since the day the lockout began and union head Tony Clark not at all.MLB's public statement was interpreted as a pressure tactic by the union, which was angered payrolls decreased during the expired five-year deal and an increased number of teams jettisoned higher-salaries veterans and transitioned to rebuilding mode."To get bears in the forest, you can't offer them bear traps," said Scott Boras, agent for five of eight players on the union's executive subcommittee.A day after the union made only small moves in response to management's incremental proposal of a day earlier, MLB advanced only one change: Teams offered to increase the minimum salary from $570,500 to $640,000, up from their previous proposal of $630,000. The minimum would increase by an additional $10,000 each season during a five-year agreement. Clubs withdrew their proposal for a tiered minimum, which players opposed.Players have asked for $775,000 in 2022 and additional $30,000 jumps in each succeeding season. The union evaluated MLB's proposal as adding $5 million annually. There was no discussion Wednesday on the key issue of luxury tax thresholds and rates, but players voiced their concern over a lack of competition and the need for younger players to get higher salaries earlier in their careers. The union proposed a $115 million pool of money that would go to 115 pre-arbitration players annually, while the clubs offered $20 million that would be distributed to 30.Yankees pitchers Gerrit Cole and Zack Britton joined the talks, two of six members on hand from the executive subcommittee that supervises the negotiations. They were joined by Scherzer, free agent pitcher Andrew Miller, Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor, and Houston catcher Jason Castro. After meeting at the start of the day at Roger Dean Stadium, the vacant spring training home of the Miami Marlins and St. Louis Cardinals, the sides caucused and then had a smaller group meeting that included Deputy Commissioner Dan Halem, Colorado CEO Dick Monfort, Scherzer and Miller. Teams have told the union they will not decrease revenue sharing and will not add new methods for players to accrue service time, which the union said is needed to prevent teams from holding players back to delay free agency.Clubs also are refusing to increase arbitration eligibility among players with at least two years of service and less than three, of which the top 22% by service time are eligible. The union wants it expanded to 75%.
