Two brothers from Australia found themselves making a bittersweet memory before the University of Cincinnati vs. the University of Arkansas season opener game on Saturday. Mason Fletcher, sophomore punter for the Bearcats has a younger brother, Max Fletcher, who just so happens to be the freshman punter for the Razorbacks. The two brothers from Melbourne were reunited on Saturday's game and Mason got to reunite with his mom. He hadn't seen her in two years. The Cincinnati Bearcats Football Twitter account posted the video of the reunion. UC captioned the video "We're not crying, you’re crying! (Okay… we're crying too.) Mason Fletcher's family flew in from Australia to watch him and his brother play against each other tomorrow at Arkansas." Watch video below to see the reunion.Fletcher had posted a picture of him and his brother in uniform to his Twitter prior to the season opener game and said "Fair to say mum and dad are tailgate ready," with a few laughing emojis. Max, who hadn't seen his parents in eight months, also took to Twitter to post a family picture. "Good to see mum and dad for the first time in 8 months, excited for Saturday #woopig," the freshman punter said. Although the game didn't rule in Cincinnati's favor when Arkansas defeated them 31-24, it was still a win for the Fletcher brothers.

Australia is now the first country to allow psychiatrists to prescribe certain psychedelic substances to patients with depression or post-traumatic stress disorder.Video above: Colorado legalizes the use of psychedelic mushroomsBeginning Saturday, Australian physicians can prescribe doses of MDMA, also known as ecstasy, for PTSD. Psilocybin, the psychoactive ingredient in psychedelic mushrooms, can be given to people who have hard-to-treat depression. The country put the two drugs on the list of approved medicines by the Therapeutic Goods Administration.Scientists in Australia were surprised by the move, which was announced in February but took effect July 1. One scientist said it puts Australia "at the forefront of research in this field."Chris Langmead, deputy director of the Neuromedicines Discovery Centre at the Monash Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences, said there have been very few advancements in the treatment of persistent mental health issues in the last 50 years. The growing cultural acceptance has led two U.S. states to approve measures for their use: Oregon was the first to legalize the adult use of psilocybin, and Colorado's voters decriminalized psilocybin in 2022. Days ago, President Joe Biden's youngest brother said in a radio interview that the president has been "very open-minded" in conversations the two have had about the benefits of psychedelics as a form of medical treatment. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration designated psilocybin as a "breakthrough therapy" in 2018, a label that's designed to speed the development and review of drugs to treat a serious condition. Psychedelics researchers have benefited from federal grants, including Johns Hopkins, and the FDA released draft guidance late last month for researchers designing clinical trials testing psychedelic drugs as potential treatments for a variety of medical conditions.Still, the American Psychiatric Association has not endorsed the use of psychedelics in treatment, noting the FDA has yet to offer a final determination. And medical experts in the U.S. and elsewhere, Australia included, have cautioned that more research is needed on the drug's efficacy and the extent of the risks of psychedelics, which can cause hallucinations."There are concerns that evidence remains inadequate and moving to clinical service is premature; that incompetent or poorly equipped clinicians could flood the space; that treatment will be unaffordable for most; that formal oversight of training, treatment, and patient outcomes will be minimal or ill-informed," said Dr. Paul Liknaitzky, head of Monash University's Clinical Psychedelic Lab.Plus, the drugs will be expensive in Australia — about $10,000 (roughly $6,600 U.S. dollars) per patient for treatment.Litnaitzky said the opportunity for Australians to access drugs for specific conditions is unique."There's excitement about drug policy progress," he said, "... about the prospect of being able to offer patients more suitable and tailored treatment without the constraints imposed by clinical trials and rigid protocols."

<p>
Novak Djokovic won his first legal round against Australian authorities who want to deport him. But the world tennis No. 1 now faces a formidable challenge on Sunday in his second round as he takes on what some describe as the God-like powers of the immigration minister on questions of visas and public interest.Djokovic won his court appeal this week against a border official's decision to cancel his visa. He won over procedural errors related to Australia's confusing COVID-19 vaccination regulations.Immigration Minister Alex Hawke's intervention on Friday to cancel the visa a second time for what Djokovic's lawyers describe as "radically different" reasons pits Djokovic against Australian politics and the law. What are the minister's powers? Hawke has a "personal power" to cancel Djokovic's visa under Section 133C of the Migration Act 1958.Hawke needed to be satisfied that Djokovic's presence in Australia "maybe, or would or might be, a risk to the health, safety or good order of the Australian community." The minister also needed to be satisfied that ordering Djokovic's deportation would be in the "public interest," a term which has no legal definition.Unlike the decision of a government underling, the "rules of natural justice do not apply" to a minister's decision. That means the minister did not have to tell Djokovic he was planning to deport him.Hawke could have canceled Djokovic's visa in secret and then notified the Serbian tennis star days later that he had to go. Had the Australian Border Force come to detain Djokovic, they would legally have had to reveal only then that he had no visa. Under Section 133F of the Act, Djokovic could have then requested the minister reverse his decision, but the only realistic option would have been to appeal it in court. How does the minister exercise his power? In Djokovic' s case, Australian government lawyers warned him that the minister was planning to intervene on Monday when a judge reinstated his visa. The star athlete's high profile might have encouraged the government to appear even handed.Djokovic's lawyers provided evidence for why he was entitled to keep his visa and be allowed to defend his Australian Open title in the days before the minister acted. While Hawke has sweeping discretion to define public interest in canceling a visa, he must also be thoughtful and detailed in his reasoning."These decisions aren't straightforward. There is case law which compels a minister when exercising this power personally to have active intellectual engagement with the materials and with the decision," immigration lawyer Kian Bone said."It's not something that he (Hawke) can have a one-liner saying: 'Dear Mr. Djokovic, your visa is canceled.' He can't have a bureaucrat or a staffer write a decision for him, look at it for two minutes and sign off on it," Bone added. How do you overturn a minister's decision? Because the minister's power is so broad and discretionary, grounds for appeal are potentially fewer than they are for a decision of a public servant acting on a minister's authority. But courts have overturned ministers' decisions in the past. The immigration minister's powers are among the broadest provided under Australian law, said Greg Barns, a lawyer experienced in visa cases."One of the criticisms of this particular power is that it is so broad and it's effectively allowing the minister to play God with someone's life," Barns said."It's inevitable that political considerations would form part of the decision because that concept of public interest is so broad that it allows a minister to effectively take into account political considerations, even though theoretically that ought not be done," Barnes added.Political considerations are heightened for Prime Minister Scott Morrison's conservative coalition with an election due by May at the latest.Although Australia has one of the highest rates of COVID-19 vaccination in the world, the government is concerned by Djokovic's popularity among those who are opposed to vaccine mandates or skeptical of the vaccines' efficacy.Djokovic's lawyers don't accept that those sentiments are a legitimate reason to deny the sporting star an attempt at a record 21 Grand Slam titles."The minister only considers the potential for exciting anti-vax sentiment in the event that he's present" at the Australian Open, Djokovic's lawyer Nick Wood told a court on Friday.Hawke's reasons do not take into account the potential impact on those attitudes if Djokovic is forcibly removed, Wood said."The minister gives no consideration whatsoever to what effect that may have on anti-vax sentiment and indeed on public order," Wood said. "That seems patently irrational."

Five children died and four suffered serious injuries when they fell 32 feet from a bouncy castle lifted into the air by wind at a school event in Australia on Thursday.Children at Hillcrest Primary School in Devonport, on the north coast of Tasmania, were attending an end-of-school activity day when the tragedy occurred."Nine grade 5/6 Hillcrest Primary School students fell from a height of around 10 meters after a significant local wind event caused a jumping castle and several inflatable "zorb" balls to lift into the air about 10 a.m.," Tasmanian Police said in a statement. The five children killed include three boys and two girls. Police released the names and images of the children on Friday, with the permission of their families. They are Addison Stewart, 11, and Jalailah Jayne-Maree Jones, Jye Sheehan, Peter Dodt and Zane Mellor, who were 12.Three of the four injured children are still in hospital, police also said.An investigation is underway into what caused the tragedy, including the strength of the wind at the time and how the castle had been tethered to the ground.Tasmanian Police Commissioner Darren Hine said "close to 40" children were taking part in the activities when a wind gust lifted the castle off the ground. Several adults were supervising the event and provided first aid until emergency services arrived, he added.Authorities are offering counseling services to first responders and others in the small town, home to about 30,000 people.Tasmanian Premier Peter Gutwein said everybody in the community had been affected by the incident."It's devastating. Heartbreaking. It's just simply incomprehensible. What should have been a celebration for the end of the school year turned into an unfortunate tragedy for young children at Hillcrest primary," he said Friday."I know that this is going to be a very challenging time for this entire community."The bouncy castle was one of a number of treats organized for students as part of the "Big Day In," according to the school's Facebook page. Other activities included a Water Play Zone and Zorb balls.Emergency services, including helicopters, were dispatched to the school to treat the injured and transport some to hospital.Hillcrest Primary School urged parents to collect their children from the school as it closed early for the day, and police asked people to avoid the area."This is a very tragic event and our thoughts are with the families and the wider school community, and also our first responders," Police Commander Debbie Williams told reporters at the school on Thursday."There is no doubt that this has been a very confronting and distressing scene. Counseling is being made available to the families affected by this in the school community along with the first responders," she said.

<p>President Joe Biden and French President Emmanuel Macron spoke on the phone Wednesday.</p>
<p>The conversation followed displeasure from the French after the U.S. entered a deal to help Australia build <a class="Link" href="https://www.thedenverchannel.com/news/national/biden-to-announce-new-national-security-initiative">nuclear-powered submarines.</a></p>
<p>Prior to the deal, Australia had an agreement with the French to obtain submarines.</p>
<p>According to a joint statement from Biden and Macron, “the two leaders agreed that the situation would have benefitted from open consultations among allies on matters of strategic interest to France and our European partners.”</p>
<p>The French ambassador, who was pulled from Washington, will return to the U.S. next week, the statement says.</p>
<p>The ambassador will be tasked with working with high-level U.S. officials “toward common objectives.”</p>
<p>Biden, who reaffirmed the strategic importance of the French in the Indo-Pacific region, will meet with Macon in October to “reach shared understandings and maintain momentum in this process.”</p>

Related video above: Sarah Storey: I want to be the best version of me at ParalympicsCyclist Paige Greco of Australia claimed the first gold medal of the Tokyo Paralympic Games, winning the 3,000-meter pursuit on Wednesday on the velodrome track. Wang Xiaomei of China was second and bronze went to Denise Schindler. It was the first of 24 gold medals up for grabs on Wednesday as the Paralympics got underway in the middle of a pandemic that has seen new cases in Tokyo soar since the Olympics opened just over a month ago.Medals were also contested on Wednesday in swimming and wheelchair fencing.Greco was born with cerebral palsy, which mostly affects the right side of her body. It was her first Paralympic Games medal."It feels amazing," Greco said. "I still can't believe it. I keep looking down and seeing (the gold medal). It's not really sunk in yet."Away from the competition, organizers confirmed Wednesday that two more athletes have tested positive for COVID-19 in the Paralympic Village. That brings the total to three positive tests by athletes in the Village over the last two days. Over the last three days, organizers have confirmed nine positive tests in the Village. The additional six, who are not atheletes, are described as "Games-related personnel." Organizing committee spokesman Masa Takaya said the athletes were "from different sports and different countries." But he gave few details and said the athletes have been placed in isolation. He was asked if there was a COVID-19 cluster in the Village. "Whether or not there is a cluster should be based on the advice from specialists," he said.Japan is expanding its coronavirus state of emergency for a second week in a row, adding several more prefectures as a surge in infections fueled by the delta variant that strains the country's health care system. The Japanese capital has been under the emergency since July 12, but new daily cases have increased more than tenfold since then to about 5,000 in Tokyo and 25,000 nationwide. Hospital beds are quickly filling and many people must now recover at home, including some who require supplemental oxygen.Japan has weathered the pandemic better than many other countries, with around 15,600 deaths nationwide since the start, but its vaccination efforts lag behind other wealthy nations. About 40% of the population has been fully vaccinated, mainly elderly people. Dr. Shigeru Omi, top medical advisor for the government, criticized International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach for returning to Tokyo to attend Tuesday's opening of the Paralympics."Right now, the government is requesting people to telework and (Bach) is coming back just for that," Omi said, responding to a question from an opposition lawmaker in parliament."When the government is making those requests to the people, why is the Olympic leader, President Bach, coming all the way to Tokyo. Anyone with normal, common sense should be able to think that he has already come once and even visited Ginza."International Paralympic Committee spokesman Craig Spence confirmed the IPC is in contact with two Paralympic athletes from Afghanistan who have left the country. He declined to speculate whether they might eventually reach Tokyo for the Paralympics."There's a lot of speculation going on where these Afghan athletes are," Spence said. "I'm not going to tell you where they are because this isn't about sport, this is about human rights and keeping people safe."He added they were in a "safe place." Several reports say the two athletes — Hossain Rosouli and Zakia Khudadadi — may have arrived in Australia.

April Ross now has the complete set of Olympic beach volleyball medals: silver in London, bronze in Rio de Janeiro and a gold she won with Alix Klineman at the Tokyo Games on Friday with a victory over Australia. The Americans beat Mariafe Artacho del Solar and Taliqua Clancy of Australia 21-15, 21-16 under a blazing sun in a match that was mercifully quick for the biggest crowd yet at Shiokaze Park — about 60 people in the temporary stadium that seats 9,600.Playing in 92-degree Fahrenheit (33 Celsius) temperatures under the hot Tokyo sun, the Americans finished off the Aussies in 43 minutes. In the bronze medal match earlier Friday, Joana Heidrich and Anouk Verge-Depre of Switzerland cruised to a straight-set victory over Latvia. The silver for Australia was its first beach volleyball medal since Natalie Cook and Kerri Pottharst took gold on Bondi Beach in 2000. But they were never really close against the Americans, who tied for the top spot in the Olympic qualification points race and lost just one set in seven matches in Tokyo. With side changes every seven points and technical timeouts every 14, the players retreated to benches, where an awning was rolled up over their heads for shade. A towel covered the seat so they wouldn't stick to the hot cushion; support staff put icepacks on their heads, or wrapped them in wet towels. And then there was hydration. So much hydration.Klineman, a first-time Olympian, and Ross, who has three medals in as many trips to the Summer Games, needed just 20 minutes to claim the first set. They fell behind 2-0 in the second before scoring 10 straight points to pull away. That silenced the chants of "Aussie! Aussie! Aussie! Oi! Oi! Oi!" from the Australians in their bright yellow shirts and brought out the cheers of "U-S-A!" from those in the red, white and blue. Australia survived three championship points before Artacho del Solar served into the net to seal the U.S. victory. After a long hug, Klineman went to the bench to douse herself in water, then the pair went over to the stands and posed with an American flag. The Swiss cruised to a straight-set victory over Latvia to claim the first Olympic medal ever for their country's women on the beach. They edged Tina Graudina and Anastasija Kravcenoka 21-19 in the first set before opening a 5-1 lead in the second and pulling away to win 21-15.Graudina was the first person to make the Olympics after coming up through an NCAA beach volleyball program that started in 2012. She played at Southern California, where she was the 2019 national player of the year and led the Trojans to the 2021 national championship.

An Australia team that beat Team USA in a pre-Olympics exhibition was no match for the Americans in a tournament elimination game.Breanna Stewart scored 23 points and filled up the box score with crooked numbers as the Americans won their Olympic quarterfinal with Australia by a 79-55 score in Japan.Their 53rd-straight Olympic win sets the Americans up for a semifinal fight with Serbia.Team USA went down 5-2 very early but Stewart took over, scoring 10 points in a 14-1 run leading into a timeout. She'd finish the first half with 20 points. The Americans led 26-12 after one quarter, Stewart well on her way to upping the ante following 9, 15, and 17 points in her first three games of the Olympics.Australia, of course, didn't quit and opened the second quarter with a 13-2 run spurred by a 3-point play from Stephanie Talbot and a straight-up 3-pointer from Leilani Mitchell, who had nine points in the first half.It was a red herring, though, as Team USA dominated at both ends of the floor. The Americans held Australia to 30 percent shooting, blocking five shots while dishing out 24 assists (led by Chelsea Gray's eight). Coach Dawn Staley got everyone in the game, but it was all about Stewart. She shot 8-of-10 from the floor including 2-of-3 from beyond the arc, grabbing five rebounds to go with two blocked shots, a steal, and three assists. Stewart also drew six fouls.Brittany Griner had the highlight of the game, one of her two blocks and emphatic standing denial. She ended with 15 points, two steals, two blocks, and eight boards.Related video — Olympic Drill: 3x3 Basketball

<p>Team USA went down 5-2 very early but Stewart took over, scoring 10 points in a 14-1 run leading into a timeout. She'd finish the first half with 20 points.</p>
<p>The Americans led 26-12 after one quarter, Stewart well on her way to upping the ante following 9, 15, and 17 points in her first three games of the Olympics.</p>
<p>Australia, of course, didn't quit and opened the second quarter with a 13-2 run spurred by a 3-point play from Stephanie Talbot and a straight-up 3-pointer from Leilani Mitchell, who had nine points in the first half.</p>
<p>It was a red herring, though, as Team USA dominated at both ends of the floor. The Americans held Australia to 30 percent shooting, blocking five shots while dishing out 24 assists (led by Chelsea Gray's eight).</p>
<p>Coach Dawn Staley got everyone in the game, but it was all about Stewart. She shot 8-of-10 from the floor including 2-of-3 from beyond the arc, grabbing five rebounds to go with two blocked shots, a steal, and three assists. Stewart also drew six fouls.</p>
<p>Brittany Griner had the highlight of the game, one of her two blocks and emphatic standing denial. She ended with 15 points, two steals, two blocks, and eight boards.</p>

<p>A sheep found wandering in Australia had more than 75 pounds of extra wool weighing it down. The sheep, named Baarack, received a much needed shearing by Edgar’s Mission Farm Sanctuary after they rescued him earlier this month.</p>
<p>Underneath the heavy fleece, Baarack was actually underweight and is now bouncing back, thanks to his new friends.</p>
<p>“Baarack is getting more confident every day!” a TikTok from the sanctuary reads.</p>
<p>"That Baarack, despite being a prey animal, and having had so little contact with our kind, will now turn and face towards us, curiously walking forward to touch our outstretched hand, leaves us in little doubt that he associates the kindnesses we have afforded him with something worth associating with," a post on the sanctuary's <a class="Link" href="https://www.facebook.com/edgarsmission/posts/10160618350850130">Facebook page</a> reads. </p>
<p>They detailed the love and care employees provided Baarack. </p>
<p>"From relieving him of all that wool, removing the long and pointy grass seed that had become wedged between his cornea and eyelid that had caused a nasty ulcer, through to the many hours we spent painstakingly plucking dozens and dozens of doggedly determined grass seeds that had ploughed their way into his flesh, Baarack, a being of reason, sees us as the good guys."</p>
<p>Baarack was spotted in a forest by a property maintenance man doing work on a nearby property, a sanctuary employee told <u><a class="Link" href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/world/2021/02/24/baarack-sheep-australia-over-75-pounds-wool-rescued/4572513001/">USA Today</a></u>.</p>
<p>It appears the sheep was once owned, having an ear tag that was torn out, possibly by the thick fleece near his face.</p>
<p>Sheep need to be sheared at least once a year, according to experts, to keep the wool light enough for the animals and to prevent possible infection.</p>
