<p>
					Democrat Catherine Cortez Masto wins reelection to U.S. Senate from Nevada, multiple outlets report Saturday night.It clinches a critical victory that will allow Democrats to keep control of the U.S. Senate.Cortez Masto had long been viewed as one of the most vulnerable Democratic incumbents as she fended off a challenge from former Nevada Attorney General Adam Laxalt in a state whose economy had been hard hit by the COVID-19 pandemic and inflation.With Cortez Masto — the first Latina senator — securing a second term, Democrats will hold 50 seats and Republicans will hold 49. Democrats are also defending a seat in Georgia, where Democratic Sen. Raphael Warnock and Republican Herschel Walker are headed to a December 6 runoff. But even if Republicans pick up that seat, the chamber would still be evenly divided, allowing Vice President Kamala Harris to still hold the tie-breaking vote. Democrats were able to hold the majority, in part, because they picked up a seat in Pennsylvania, where Lt. Gov. John Fetterman, a Democrat, defeated Trump-backed Mehmet Oz in the contest to replace retiring Republican Sen. Pat Toomey.Control of the U.S. House still hangs in the balance and may not be determined for some time with ballots left to be counted in closely contested races in California, as well as other states.Laxalt was closely allied with former President Donald Trump after aiding his efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election results in the Silver State. But it was the state's difficult economic climate — with one of the nation's highest inflation rates and gas prices that still topped $5 a gallon in October — that became the animating force in this Senate contest.Cortez Masto was elected in 2016 to replace outgoing Democratic Sen. Harry Reid, who had been a powerful force in Nevada politics for decades. She touted her efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic to steer comprehensive relief and recovery aid to the convention, trade show, entertainment and hospitality industries that are central to the state's economy.One of the biggest challenges she faced is that much of Nevada's population is transient — meaning many voters had not gotten to know Cortez Masto or her record. Laxalt and Republican allied groups sought to tie the Democratic senator to President Joe Biden, whose approval ratings are underwater in a state that he narrowly won in 2020.Though there are many economic forces at play in driving inflation, including Russian President Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine, supply chain issues and the effects of the pandemic, the GOP argued that the spending and relief bills pushed by Democrats led to the sticker shock that many Nevadans are feeling at the gas pump and the grocery store. Cortez Masto focused on Democrats' legislative efforts to reduce Americans' costs, including on health care and prescription drugs, while trying to tie her Republican opponent to "big oil."Cortez Masto also tried to remind voters of Laxalt's history as one of Trump's campaign co-chairs and accused him of pushing an "extreme agenda" and conspiracy theories that she said fueled the storming of the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.She and allied Democratic groups also tried to argue that Laxalt would put abortion rights at risk in Nevada, even though they are protected up to 24 weeks by a 1990 voter referendum. In an op-ed for the Reno Gazette Journal, Laxalt pushed back — stating that abortion access was settled law in the state and that he would not support a federal ban on abortion.

					Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds will deliver the Republican response to President Joe Biden's State of the Union address on March 1, GOP congressional leaders announced Tuesday as they look outside Washington to appeal to voters in a midterm election year.Reynolds is the 43rd governor of Iowa and has served since May of 2017. She was the first governor in the country to require schools to open for full-time in-person learning.Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell praised her for fighting COVID-19 “without forgetting common sense.""The President and his team should take notes,” McConnell, R-Ky., said in a statement.Reynolds pushed back against mask and vaccine mandates amid the coronavirus pandemic. She was chided by the Trump administration’s White House Coronavirus Task Force for ending mask mandates while Iowa was seeing a rapid increase in cases and deaths. Defying science, Reynolds sometimes spoke skeptically about the effectiveness of masks in halting the spread of the virus.Republican lawmakers have chafed at requirements designed to prevent the spread of COVID-19, such as government mandates that certain workers get a vaccine, saying the edicts violated individual Americans' civil liberties.Many Americans have grown weary of pandemic restrictions and states around the country are easing restrictions as cases begin to drop and as the large majority of people become vaccinated.House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy said “disastrous decision-making in Washington" has been offset by real leadership in states across the country, citing Iowa as an example.“She handled COVID by choosing freedom over lockdowns and personal responsibility over mandates — leading to real economic recovery from the pandemic," McCarthy, R-Calif., said of Reynolds.Reynolds became the first woman to serve as Iowa governor. She was elected in the narrowest victory in modern Iowa politics in 2018 beating Democrat Fred Hubbell by three percentage points, 50.4% to 47.4%.She has governed as a conservative supporting a ban on same-sex marriage. She was a vocal supporter of President Donald Trump, appearing at Iowa rallies, and said on a recent Iowa Public Television program that she expected he would endorse her when she formally announces plans for reelection.___Associated Press writer David Pitt in Des Moines, Iowa, contributed.

											Mhm. Keep you abreast. What's yourself? It was a secret yesterday about the outfit daleks officially out. You kind of break it down. What are you thinking a little bit about it, it wasn't too crazy, I mean, it's not a huge story behind it, it's like a jacket, like how it came together Each way, three for the shoes, and that was a good fit, the way I say, it wasn't like, not a long, long story behind and I just was a fan. Yeah, now that was, that was a big topic. I had a lot of, had a lot of, lot of suggestions, a lot of input I told everyone just, I had, I had uh I haven't, so hopefully I'm making more proud. I hope so, because there was a lot of opinions that went into probably, so people are gonna talk about a Heisman moment, but when you look back on this season, whether it's the game, but it's going to get their moment in the season that you told yourself around, I could be one of the best players in the country and following um I want to say it's a specific moment um you know, you kinda have to, you know, in those situations um and whenever adversity hits you, you have to believe that you have to have that faith in yourself, that faith in your team um and really that comes from, you know, that comes from the work that, you know, we all put in the off season, that comes from how we all grow um come together during practices and during games um so I want to say it's a specific moments where I had it developed and if it's kind of something that I always had and you kind of learn for yourself and to the team just how you work it, how you compete and obviously known in there, you're known for being a very quiet person, but at the moment, what do you want that championship secured Alabama spot in the playoff part contains the most? Uh yeah, I mean that that's, you know, that's definitely very emotional moment. You know, it's uh you just have to make sure that, you know, you have to kind of make sure that those emotions are are tempered and you got to really understand the circumstances. Um you know, when you're playing for me um you know, I feel like I, I just operate the best when I can kind of take those emotions and be calm, but you know, after the game, when the time is over, Um you know, when you get that that time, the locker room to where you know, you get to celebrate a little bit of rejoice um during those 24 hours, directly after the game, it's always fun and those are moments that you never forget. So after the game, that's kind of when it's time to let those emotions go. So it was definitely, it's definitely great to have those, you know, kinda have one of those moments after the game and um you know, we want to, we have a lot of hard work and work ahead of us to try to have more of those women's. It was the key to the 20 round between Georgia. Great. I haven't spoken to coach balancing. Yeah, there are two others at and yeah, and Melanie, yeah, there are two others at a modern day, which is, was crazy. But yeah, it was really just, I felt like how we, how we work, how we approached, um, you know, how we approach practice, how we approach uh, you know, each day and kind of the mindset we took and things really took it personally. Um, when we were challenging, that was at hand and um, you know, we stepped up to the plate and that was all of us and how we worked and the coach is doing a great job, putting us in a position to be successful. Um, so I think that was kind of the biggest thing and I, yeah, I talked to uh, talked to coach, although he's wishing me luck and uh, a ton of love for cultural, oh those, those are great years for me. So it's been great to kind of do what I can to try to continue that legacy. It today. You talked a little bit about your dad a turnover. What would you be like without him helping you through your college high school? Tell me a little bit about destroying. Yeah, I couldn't imagine my dad's been someone who's obviously been around since thinking don't always have my back and um you know, it's someone I talked to uh consistently not just about football and not just for advice about really any any and everything. Um we'll talk about it and have a conversation about, so you know, obviously been um my parents been the biggest mentors in my life and the biggest reason why I am, who I am, so um I couldn't even imagine who I'd be without my dad. Mhm They're gonna happen tonight at that moment. Um it's funny all the advice I've done from back, especially um it's all been about not not focusing too much on your words and you know, making sure that the focus stays on, you know, on football and you know, that's definitely something that's on par with, with Alabama part of myself um just to, you know, just to enjoy the moment and have fun, but also, you know, just remember the important stuff to keep it like that, you know, that's kind of something that, you know, you need to hear and something something that my mind set set actually, so that's kind of the biggest thing that stands out to me in a moment. Uh yeah, I think it was, it was probably probably the, cause game, they say we did that earlier today and you know, Kenny just got here today, so that was the first, today was the first day that we were all, all four of us were together. So it was all of us in the same, you know, all of us were able to, you know, do together and it was, it was a really cool atmosphere. It was cause game day and then, you know, they're the army and navy fans in the background and being on there with the set and the cast is a really fun experience. So that was really fun moment for that rice. We talked yesterday, Jamison Wilson's kind of impact he's had, but specifically on your offense and given the guys that you lost last year, how does that change things for you guys and see where you're, yeah, gaming has been huge for us. Um, he's been huge. Um, as far as, you know, obviously production on the field and uh, the things that he breaches to our offense and the dimensions and the stuff that he unlocks or, you know, it's been huge for us and it's productivity, but also it's a lot that he brings. Um, you know, not just on Saturdays, but you know, throughout the week, he brings so much juice to practice and so much energy. Almost 200 nations accepted a contentious climate compromise Saturday aimed at keeping a key global warming target alive, but it contained a last-minute change that watered down crucial language about coal.Several countries, including small island states, said they were deeply disappointed by the change promoted by India to “phase down,” rather than “phase out” coal power, the single biggest source of greenhouse gas emissions.Nation after nation had complained earlier on the final day of two weeks of U.N. climate talks in Glasgow, Scotland about how the deal did not go far or fast enough, but they said it was better than nothing and provided incremental progress, if not success.Negotiators from Switzerland and Mexico called the coal language change against the rules because it came so late. However, they said they had no choice but to hold their noses and go along with it.Swiss environment minister Simonetta Sommaruga said the change will make it harder to achieve the international goal to limit warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit) since pre-industrial times.“Our fragile planet is hanging by a thread,” United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said in a statement. “We are still knocking on the door of climate catastrophe.”Many other nations and climate campaigners pointed at India for making demands that weakened the final agreement."India’s last-minute change to the language to phase down but not phase out coal is quite shocking,” said Australian climate scientist Bill Hare, who tracks world emission pledges for the science-based Climate Action Tracker. “India has long been a blocker on climate action, but I have never seen it done so publicly.”Others approached the deal from a more positive perspective. In addition to the revised coal language, the Glasgow Climate Pact included enough financial incentives to almost satisfy poorer nations and solved a long-standing problem to pave the way for carbon trading.The agreement also says big carbon polluting nations have to come back and submit stronger emission-cutting pledges by the end of 2022.“It’s a good deal for the world,” U.S. climate envoy John Kerry told The Associated Press. “It’s got a few problems, but it’s all in all a very good deal.”Before the India change, negotiators said the deal preserved, albeit barely, the overarching goal of limiting Earth's warming by the end of the century to 1.5 degrees. The world has already warmed 1.1 degrees Celsius (2 degrees Fahrenheit) compared to preindustrial times.Ahead of the Glasgow talks, the United Nations had set three criteria for success, and none of them were achieved. The U.N.‘s criteria included pledges to cut carbon dioxide emissions in half by 2030, $100 billion in financial aid from rich nations to poor, and ensuring that half of that money went to helping the developing world adapt to the worst effects of climate change.“We did not achieve these goals at this conference,” Guterres said Saturday night. “But we have some building blocks for progress."Negotiators Saturday used the word “progress” more than 20 times, but rarely used the word “success” and then mostly in that they’ve reached a conclusion, not about the details in the agreement. Conference President Alok Sharma said the deal drives “progress on coal, cars, cash and trees’’ and is “something meaningful for our people and our planet.’’Environmental activists were measured in their not-quite-glowing assessments, issued before India’s last-minute change.“It’s meek, it’s weak and the 1.5 C goal is only just alive, but a signal has been sent that the era of coal is ending. And that matters,” said Greenpeace International Executive Director Jennifer Morgan, a veteran of the U.N. climate talks known as the Conferences of Parties.Former Irish President Mary Robinson, speaking for a group of retired leaders called The Elders, said the pact represents “some progress, but nowhere near enough to avoid climate disaster... People will see this as a historically shameful dereliction of duty.”Next year’s talks are scheduled to take place in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh. Dubai will host the meeting in 2023.___Aniruddha Ghosal, Karl Ritter and Ellen Knickmeyer contributed to this report.

					A criminal complaint filed by a police investigator with a court in Albany has accused former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo of committing a misdemeanor sex crime, though there were reports Friday that the document might have been submitted in error.The brief complaint, filed by an investigator with the Albany County Sheriff's Office, accused Cuomo of putting his hand under a woman's shirt on Dec. 7, 2020. The document didn't name the woman but Cuomo had been publicly accused of groping an aide, Brittany Commisso, at the executive mansion in Albany last year.The Albany County district attorney’s office and Albany County Sheriff did not immediately return messages but the Times Union, of Albany, quoted unnamed officials as saying the complaint had been issued "prematurely" by the court and that a final decision hadn't been made about whether Cuomo would face charges.Related video above: Full video of Andrew Cuomo announcing resignation.Cuomo's lawyer and spokesperson didn't immediately return messages seeking comment.Commisso, who was an executive assistant for Cuomo, says he reached under her shirt and fondled her when they were alone in a room at the governor's mansion in Albany late last year.She said Cuomo pulled her in for a hug as she prepared to leave the governor’s office at the mansion. When she told him, "you’re going to get us in trouble," Cuomo replied, "I don’t care," and slammed the door shut, according to her account. Commisso said Cuomo slid his hand up her blouse and grabbed her breast.Cuomo has adamantly denied groping her, saying once, "I would have to lose my mind to do such a thing."The Associated Press doesn’t usually identify alleged sexual assault victims unless they decide to tell their stories publicly, as Commisso has done in newspaper and television interviews.Commisso filed a complaint with the county sheriff in August in the same week a report from state Attorney General Letitia James concluded the Democratic governor sexually harassed 11 women and worked to retaliate against one of his accusers. Other accusations outlined in the report range from planting unwanted kisses to asking unwelcome personal questions about sex and dating.Cuomo announced his resignation a week after the release of the blistering report, marking a dramatic downfall for the third-term governor who had been seen as a beacon of sturdy competence during his daily COVID-19 briefings in 2020.Commisso was referred to as "Executive Assistant #1" in the report but publicly revealed her identity after its release. She is the only woman mentioned in the attorney general's report known to have filed a criminal complaint.Albany County Sheriff Craig Apple at the time promised a "very comprehensive" investigation in partnership Albany County District Attorney David Soares.Cuomo attorney Rita Glavin has said that Commisso's "story changed over time."The complaint filed by the sheriff's department investigator said evidence in the case included police blackberry messages, cell phone records, building security records and a text message from Cuomo's mobile phone.District attorneys in Oswego, Manhattan, suburban Westchester and Nassau counties also had said they asked for investigative materials from the attorney general’s inquiry to see if any of the allegations could result in criminal charges.Also, the Assembly Judiciary Committee is completing a wide-ranging impeachment investigation of Cuomo that began before he resigned. The also were looking at the administration’s handling of COVID-19 data and efforts to rush COVID-19 testing for Cuomo’s inner circle in spring 2020.

					Related video above: The future of Jeffrey Epstein's Zorro Ranch in New MexicoThe two Bureau of Prisons workers tasked with guarding Jeffrey Epstein the night he killed himself in a New York jail have admitted they falsified records, but they will skirt any time behind bars under a deal with federal prosecutors, authorities said Friday.The prison workers, Tova Noel and Michael Thomas, were accused of sleeping and browsing the internet instead of monitoring Epstein the night he took his own life in August 2019.They were charged with lying on prison records to make it seem as though they had made required checks on the financier before he was found in his cell. New York City’s medical examiner ruled Epstein’s death a suicide.As part of the deal with prosecutors, they will enter into a deferred prosecution agreement with the Justice Department and will serve no time behind bars, according to a letter from federal prosecutors that was filed in court papers Friday. Noel and Thomas would instead be subjected to supervised release, would be required to complete 100 hours of community service and would be required to fully cooperate with an ongoing probe by the Justice Department’s inspector general, it says.The two have "admitted that they 'willfully and knowingly completed materially false count and round slips regarding required counts and rounds'" in the housing unit where Epstein was being held, the letter says.The deal would need to be approved by a judge, which could happen as soon as next week. Attorneys for the guards did not immediately respond to messages seeking comment.Sen. Ben Sasse, a Republican member of the Senate Judiciary Committee who has been a vocal critic of the Justice Department’s handling of Epstein’s case, called the deal "unacceptable" and said the public deserves to see a report detailing the prison agency’s failures."One hundred hours of community service is a joke — this isn’t traffic court," Sasse said in a statement. "The leader of an international child sex trafficking ring escaped justice, his co-conspirators had their secrets go to the grave with him, and these guards are going to be picking up trash on the side of the road."Prosecutors alleged that Noel and Thomas sat at their desks just 15 feet from Epstein’s cell, shopped online for furniture and motorcycles, and walked around the unit’s common area instead of making required rounds every 30 minutes.During one two-hour period, both appeared to have been asleep, according to the indictment filed against them.Both officers who were guarding Epstein were working overtime because of staffing shortages. One of the guards, who did not primarily work as a correctional officer, was working a fifth straight day of overtime. The other guard was working mandatory overtime, meaning a second eight-hour shift of the day.Before they were arrested, both officers had declined a plea deal with federal prosecutors.Epstein's death and the revelation that he was able to kill himself while behind bars at one of the most secure jails in America was a major embarrassment for the Bureau of Prisons and cast a spotlight on the agency, which has also been besieged by serious misconduct in recent years.Staffing shortages at the agency are so severe that guards often work overtime day after day or are forced to work mandatory double shifts. Violence leads to regular lockdowns at federal prison compounds across the U.S. And a congressional report released in 2019 found that "bad behavior is ignored or covered up on a regular basis."The falsification of records has been a problem throughout the federal prison system. Union officials have long argued that the reduction of staff is putting both guards and inmates in danger, but they’ve faced an uphill battle getting attention.
