New York Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is under investigation by the U.S. House Ethics Committee.

On Wednesday, the committee confirmed in a statement that they were investigating the Congresswoman after an undisclosed matter was referred to them by the Office of Congressional Ethics on June 23. The committee did not disclose why they were investigating Ocasio-Cortez.

"The mere fact of a referral or an extension, and the mandatory disclosure of such an extension and the name of the subject of the matter, does not itself indicate that any violation has occurred or reflect any judgment on behalf of the committee," the committee said in a statement.

The committee said it would announce its “course of action” after the 118th Congress convened.

“The Congresswoman has always taken ethics incredibly seriously, refusing any donations from lobbyists, corporations, or other special interests," the lawmaker's spokesperson said in a statement, USA Today and Forbes reported. "We are confident that this matter will be dismissed.”

According to its website, the Office of Congressional Ethics, established in March 2008 by the U.S. House of Representatives, is a nonpartisan, independent entity that reviews misconduct allegations against House members and its staff.

Rep. Cori Bush is thankful no one was hurt after learning her car was hit by gunfire.

"Any act of gun violence shakes your soul," the congresswoman from Missouri said on Twitter.

According to CNN, Bush's vehicle was hit Saturday morning in the St. Louis area.

A spokesperson for Bush said there was no evidence that the congresswoman was targeted.

This is not the first time Bush's vehicle was hit by gunfire. In 2020, her car's door handle was struck and a tire was hit by bullets. She posted pictures on social media that showed the damage.

Bush, a progressive Democrat, says she is working to "eradicate the root causes of gun violence, and keep everyone safe."

WASHINGTON — The House of Representatives censured Republican Rep. Paul Gosar of Arizona for a violent video he posted online.

Two Republicans, Rep. Liz Cheney and Rep. Adam Kinzinger, joined Democrats in voting to censure Gosar. The resolution passed by a final vote of 223-207— with one Republican voting present.

The animated video Gosar shared shows him attacking Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York with a sword.

Ocasio-Cortez spoke about the video prior to the vote.

"It is a sad day in which a member who leads a political party in the United States of America can not bring themselves to say that issuing a depiction of murdering a member of Congress is wrong," she said.

Gosar rejected that the video condoned violence.

"I do not espouse violence towards anyone. I never have. I voluntarily took the cartoon down, not because it was a threat, but some thought it was. Out of compassion who generally thought offense, I self-censored," he said.

Gosar will now be removed from the House Committee on Oversight and Reform and the Natural Resources Committee.

Gosar served on the Oversight and Reform Committee with Ocasio-Cortez.

Democrat Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez made a bold statement at the New York Met Gala Monday night.

The solid white, strapless customized gown featured "tax the rich" emblazoned in red on the back.

On social media, Ocasio-Cortez said Brother Vellies created the dress.

"The medium is the message, "Ocasio-Cortez captioned the photo. "Proud to work with Aurora James as a sustainably focused, Black woman immigrant designer who went from starting her dream at Brother Vellies at a flea market in Brooklyn to winning the CFDA against all odds - and then work together to kick open the doors at the Met."

The dress caused quite the reaction on social media, with people including Donald Trump, Jr. and Sen. Ted Cruz, letting their followers know they were not fans of the gown.

Though attendees to the Met often choose catchy designs, AOC's message was seen as bold for a room filled with some of the wealthiest Americans, Forbes pointed out.

According to Forbes, tickets to the Met cost at least $30,000.

Ocasio-Cortez wasn't the only lawmaker who used fashion to make a statement at the event.

Fellow Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney wore a gown with the words "equal rights for women" on it.

The decision by security markets to restrict trading on stocks like GameStop sparked a rare moment of unity between conservatives and progressives on Capitol Hill Thursday.

Lawmakers from across the political spectrum — from the left-wing progressive House caucus known as "The Squad" to right-wing Senators who identify as "Constitutional conservatives" — skewered platforms like Robinhood and TD Ameritrade, accusing them of siding with Wall Street elitists instead of Middle-Class America.

Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Michigan, a progressive Democrat and member of "The Squad," called for House Democrats to investigate Robinhood's decision to halt trading on GameStop stock.

"They're blocking the ability to trade to protect Wall St. hedge funds, stealing millions of dollars from their users to protect people who've used the stock market as a casino for decades," Tlaib said.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-New York, a fellow "Squad" member and a member of the House Financial Services Committee, said she would support an investigation.

"We now need to know more about @RobinhoodApp's decision to block retail investors from purchasing stock while hedge funds are freely able to trade the stock as they see fit," she said.

Ocasio-Cortez's tweet prompted a response from Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, who said he "fully" agreed.

It's rare to see Ocasio-Cortez and Cruz reach an agreement on social media. The two often spar on Twitter on topics like the Paris climate agreement and the pro-Trump riot at the U.S. Capitol.

Robinhood — a trading platform that says it aims to "democratize" market trading — announced on Thursday that it was restricting trades on GameStop, BlackBerry and several other stocks that have seen unsual activity in recent days due to "recent volatility."

The meteoric rise of GameStop stock was fueled by amateur or part-time traders who banded together on social media and used apps like Robinhood to spoil Wall Street hedge funds' bets that the retailer's stock would tank. Hedge fund investors who bet against GameStop lost billions of dollars this week alone.

The decision is also causing the New York attorney general to investigate.

ORLANDO — Let's talk about salt. No, not what you put on food.

The S.A.L.T. debate in Washington is about state and local tax deductions and whether Americans should be able to deduct unlimited state and local taxes on their federal tax return.

WHY IT MATTERS

Former President Donald Trump's signature tax law in 2017 made a change to the amount of state and local taxes that can be deducted from a federal tax return.

Prior to 2017, it was an unlimited amount.

After 2017, it was capped at $10,000.

PEOPLE ON THE MOVE

During the last year, thousands of Americans decided to leave the state in which they were leaving and move somewhere else. No state has perhaps benefited more than Florida.

"It’s absolutely insane right now," Natalie Arrowsmith, a realtor in Central Florida, said about the housing market.

Arrowsmith says many of her clients are coming from New York and California, and citing the benefits of new work-from-home perks.

For instance, with the $10,000 cap on deductions in place, there is now an incentive to live in a lower-taxed state where your local taxes aren't as high.

Florida has no income tax.

"Compared to where they are in other state, that’s a huge attraction," Arrowsmith said.

One such person is Erin Sykes, a realtor herself in the Palm Beach area. Sykes is still keeping her business in New York, but her primary residence is now Florida.

"In my situation, I am definitely keeping more of my money by being a Florida resident," Sykes said.

S.A.L.T. DEBATE IN CONGRESS

The debate over whether state and local taxes should be eligible for unlimited deductions is a part of the massive infrastructure debate.

Rep. Tom Suozzi (D-NY) said he will vote against the President's proposal unless the tax code is changed. Suozzi believes people are leaving his state for places like Florida because of it.

Other Democrats who support changing the tax code include Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and Senator Chuck Schumer, who represent California and New York respectively.

Unlike Suozzi, Pelosi and Schumer are unlikely to hold up the infrastructure package if the measure does not make it into the final bill.

Changing it will be difficult, however. Many progressives have actually sided with conservatives on the issue.

Senator Bernie Sander (D-VT) and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) have said they are opposed to changing the tax code because it would benefit the wealthy who have high taxes to pay.

All of this must be factored into negotiations over infrastructure reform that continue in Washington, D.C.
