American Airlines cuts back its fall schedule

American Airlines told CNN on Thursday that it is cutting back some of its flights this fall after building toward returning to pre-pandemic levels.

According to CNN, American Airlines will cut 2% of its flights in September. Philadelphia will be a heavily impacted hub with 3% fewer American flights in September, growing to 5% in October.

The airline industry has become strained this year in returning to pre-pandemic levels. The Transportation Security Administration reports about a 10% drop in the number of passengers screened this summer compared to 2019.

Meanwhile, the federal government said it has received a number of reports from consumers about delayed or changed flights. In response, the Transportation Department is considering changes that would make it easier for consumers to be refunded for changed flights.

An American Airlines spokesperson told CNN it will "size our airline for the resources we have available and to build additional buffer into the remainder of our summer schedule."

For John Wesley, no day has a greater significance than Sept. 11, 2001. His reasons are deeply personal, powerful and inspiring.Images of his fiancée are indelibly etched in Wesley's mind, heart and soul. Sarah Clark died when terrorists hijacked American Airlines Flight 77 and deliberately crashed into the Pentagon."She saw the same old world each day with new eyes, and her compassion never blinks," Wesley said.Authorities allowed Wesley to watch the boarding gate video. He saw two of the hijackers looking at a child playing with an Elmo toy, seniors being pushed onboard in wheelchairs and students securing their backpacks."For me, how could you look at that and still do what was on your mind?" Wesley said.Wesley decided at the last minute not to go on the trip with Clark because it was his first day on the job as an actor on HBO'S "The Wire.""Growing up in Mississippi, I just believe I would have fought," Wesley said.Every year on the 9/11 anniversary, Wesley visits the Pentagon crash site. Man arrested in Utah after unruly behavior on flight

SALT LAKE CITY — A man was arrested at the Salt Lake City International Airport Monday after witnesses said he berated crew and fellow passengers during a flight.

The incident happened Monday on American Airlines flight 1802 from Los Angeles to Salt Lake City.

Dennis Busch, who witnessed the man's behavior and arrest, said the passenger yelled at a woman of Asian ethnicity, telling her to sit down while she was standing up "to deal with a back issue."

"He then told flight attendants that the woman and the person she was with 'didn't belong here,'" Busch wrote in an Instagram post.

"After asking him to calm down the man went into a complete meltdown of racist, sexist and belligerent comments, culminating in his arrest at the gate," Busch wrote. "We were lucky to have such a well trained crew who kept their cool throughout the flight!"

A Salt Lake City International Airport spokesperson confirmed that police arrested the unruly passenger after the flight landed. They later said that the man was taken to a hospital to be checked out. They then cited him for public intoxication.

American Airlines also confirmed that the passenger was removed by police.

"We thank our crew for their professionalism and our customers for their understanding," a company spokesperson added in the statement.

The Federal Aviation Administration says it has seen a disturbing spike in reports of unruly passenger behavior in 2021. The FAA has initiated 750 such investigations so far in 2021 — a number three times higher than a typical calendar year.

Earlier this year, the agency instituted a "zero-tolerance" policy when it comes to unruly passenger behavior.
