An alligator was caught in New Plymouth, Idaho, and taken in by Idaho Fish and Game on Friday morning, according to a press release from Idaho Fish and Game.

Thursday night, a resident was walking their dog when they saw something moving in the brush. After identifying the animal as a 3.5-foot alligator, the resident caught the animal, loaded it into a nearby horse trailer and called Fish and Game. The alligator is currently being housed at a Fish and Game facility.

"Again it goes back to that kind of common sense. If there is a potentially dangerous animal that would be fun as a pet, make sure you can legally possess it. And please don't bring it into the state," said Idaho Fish and Game public information supervisor Rodger Philips.

In Idaho, it is illegal to possess alligators, or any crocodilian, without proper permits.

Alligators generally are native to the southeastern United States and are not native to areas north and west of Arkansas.

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. —

A man visiting Hilton Head Island in South Carolina with his family captured cellphone video of an alligator charging at a fisherman.

"My wife and three kids decided to go for a bike ride," said Micah Kimberlin, who recorded the video. "We came across a couple people standing [near a pond] and then we see an alligator...this gentleman is fishing kind of far away and it's headed directly towards him. That's when I started filming this alligator heading toward him."

No one was injured.

The alligator re-entered the pond shortly after charging on land.

The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources said it is likely that the alligator associated humans with food.

"My opinion is it was probably an alligator that has been fed," said Morgan Hart, alligator project coordinator for SCDNR. "It has learned that people fishing there have given it food in the past. It is very hard to unteach an alligator that people mean food."

Hart said if you're ever fishing in a pond with a gator, you should keep your distance.

"If you're seeing alligators, they're approaching you, they're interested in your bait, your line, your bobber, you should pull all that gear out, step away, give them time to move on," she said.

Kimberlin's brother-in-law captured a photo of crews removing alligators from the pond where the incident happened.

SCDNR wants to remind everyone that a fed gator is a dead gator.

"Once an alligator learns to approach people for food, that is a dangerous animal that has to be removed," Hart said.

There are plenty of alligators in Alabama. But how many enjoy a day at the beach?

One such unlikely critter was spotted riding the waves recently on Dauphin Island, bobbing calmly near the human beachgoers sunbathing and wading.

Matt Harvill, a 27-year-old Mobile resident, came across the lengthy gator on May 7 while at the beach taking pregnancy announcement photos with his girlfriend.

He said the reptile seemed to be enjoying the sun and gently breaking waves, attracting several beachgoers to get a closer look — but not too close.

"It didn't hiss, charge or open its mouth at all," Harvill said. "It seemed like it was kind of spectating and seeing what was going on."

Harvill snapped photos and videos of the gator to show family and friends. His post on Facebook garnered 3,000 shares.

"The things you never think you'll see," he wrote in the caption. "First time seeing a gator on Dauphin Island. Heading towards the west end be careful y'all."

Alligators are found throughout Alabama in saltwater bayous and estuaries, said Marianne Gauldin, outreach coordinator for the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.

"It is not unusual to see them in the Gulf of Mexico as they can tolerate a variety of salinity levels," she said in an email. "They are aquatic and cover long distances as they forage for prey items."

Harvill said he's seen things like jellyfish or a dark fin slicing through the Gulf waters, but never an alligator.

"I didn't want to step foot in the water after that!" he said.

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. —

A woman who was attacked by an alligator Thursday morning in Hilton Head, South Carolina, is alive thanks to some quick-thinking neighbors.

According to the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office, the attack happened at around 8:15 a.m. on Rookery Way in Hilton Head Plantation.

Deputies say the woman had been walking her dog next to a lagoon behind her home when an eight-foot-long alligator grabbed her legs.

At that point, a neighbor heard the commotion and saw the woman being dragged into the water, according to the sheriff's office. The neighbor called for her husband who grabbed a shovel and beat the alligator until it released the victim.

"The victim’s legs were damaged; however, the full extent of her injuries is unknown, nor do we know if there were any other injuries to the victim," a Hilton Head Plantation (HHP) representative said in an email to residents.

The victim was taken to Memorial Health in Savannah and was able to talk to her daughter while en route to the hospital.

The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources captured and euthanized the alligator and will examine it to see if it was being fed.

"We are very grateful for the quick thinking and brave neighbors who fought off the alligator and held onto the victim who was being pulled into the water by the alligator. We are also most grateful for the work of our Security Officers and HHI Fire and Rescue, who treated the victim at the scene and transported the victim to the hospital, SCDNR, for their quick response to remove the alligator and the Beaufort County Sherriff’s Deputies for their quick response and assistance," the HHP representative said. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victim and her family."

HHP added that they believe the victim lived alone.

As of Thursday afternoon, there was no information available on the victim's injuries or condition. Her dog was uninjured.

“This is an unfortunate incident. We advise residents to be aware of their surroundings, especially if they are taking walks with small pets near lagoons that are habitats for alligators,” said Joheida Fister, Hilton Head Island Fire Rescue Deputy Chief.

A longtime resident of Hilton Head Plantation, Neal Warner, told sister station WJCL he's seen alligators in the area before, but they never bothered anyone.

"I would see them pop into the water, they would never ever linger for us," Warner said.

Warner told WJCL he is now afraid to walk his own dog in the area where the attack happened, despite the alligator being removed.

"It's just not worth it, there are other places to safely walk," Warner said.

You may remember, there have been alligator attacks in Sun City and Sea Pines as well. Both of those incidents also involved someone walking their dog.
