More than a year after the bodies of Maggie Murdaugh and her son Paul were discovered on the prominent Lowcountry family's property in Colleton County, South Carolina, charges in the double homicide may be filed as soon as this week.On Tuesday, family members were told disgraced attorney Alex Murdaugh would be charged this week in the murder of his wife and son. Video above: Murdaugh murders investigation: 1 year later Family members were notified by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, as a courtesy, Tuesday morning. John Marvin Murdaugh, Alex Murdaugh's younger brother, told WCIV SLED agents did not tell the family what charges Murdaugh will face but they would be in connection to the double homicide.Alex Murdaugh told authorities from the onset he discovered the bodies of his wife and son after they were shot to death the night of June 7, 2021. Murdaugh was eventually charged with dozens of fraud-related crimes after allegations he stole millions of dollars from his clients and from the family of the former Murdaugh housekeeper, Gloria Satterfield, who died after a fall at the Murdaugh home.Alex Murdaugh's attorney Jim Griffin provided sister station WJCL the following statement:"We have not been advised by anyone associated with law enforcement or the Attorney General's office that Alex will be charged with murder. I am aware that SLED advised the family that they intend to seek murder indictments from a grand jury later this week. We won't have any comment until charges are actually brought against Alex."This is a developing story. Check back for updates.

A state agent testifying Wednesday in Alex Murdaugh's double murder trial meticulously reconstructed activity from his iPhone and the cellphones of his son and wife the night they were killed to try to link the disgraced South Carolina attorney to the shooting deaths. The key evidence for prosecutors is a video from the son's phone of a dog at the kennels near where Murdaugh's son Paul was killed with a shotgun and wife Maggie was shot several times with a rifle at the family's Colleton County hunting lodge on June 7, 2021.The timeline from prosecutors said the video was taken about five minutes before the killings. Two friends of Paul Murdaugh testified later Wednesday that they were certain they heard Alex, Paul and Maggie Murdaugh's voices on it. In interviews with police, Alex Murdaugh said he was never at the kennels that night.Later Wednesday, Murdaugh's defense used that same data to suggest that Murdaugh's phone and his wife's phone were not together when her iPhone recorded a final change in orientation between portrait and landscape mode, indicating it may have been tossed on the side of the road about a half-mile from the family's property.Murdaugh, 54, is standing trial on two counts of murder in the shootings of his 52-year-old wife and 22-year-old son. Murdaugh faces 30 years to life in prison if convicted.Court ended Wednesday with a cliffhanger. Judge Clifton Newman said he would rule Thursday morning on whether evidence of Murdaugh possibly stealing from clients and his family law firm could be admitted.Prosecutors opened the door by asking one of Paul Murdaugh's friends in the last question of the day if he knew anything about Alex Murdaugh “being confronted on the morning of June 7, 2021, about $792,000 of missing fees from his law firm?” The friend answered no.Prosecutors said fear that this theft was about to be exposed led Murdaugh to kill his wife and son to get sympathy and buy time to cover up the crimes. The defense said it's absurd to think a lawyer would believe the brutal deaths of his family would not bring more scrutiny into his life.State Law Enforcement Division Lt. Britt Dove returned to the witness stand Wednesday on the fifth day of testimony. He specializes in retrieving and analyzing cellphone data.Dove went over a trove of information from the cellphones of Alex Murdaugh, his wife and son. There were phone call logs and texts, steps recorded, apps asking for information, GPS locations, changes when the phone went from vertical portrait mode to horizontal landscape mode and back, and — key to the prosecution's case — when the camera was activated. The last time the camera on Paul Murdaugh's cellphone came on was 8:44:49 p.m. when it took a video for under a minute, Dove said.Someone appears in the video to be trying to get an image of a wagging dog's tail. Voices are heard trying to get the dog to stay still and figuring out if it had a chicken or a guinea in its mouth. The video was meant for Rogan Gibson, who testified Wednesday he considered the Murdaughs a second family. “Can you think of any circumstances that you can envision, knowing them as you do, where Alex would brutally murder Paul and Maggie," defense lawyer Jim Griffin asked Gibson.“Not that I can think of," he responded. Paul Murdaugh read the final text on his phone at about 8:48:59 p.m. and 36 seconds later another text came in that he never read. Maggie Murdaugh's phone showed she last read a text 28 seconds later, Dove testified.Alex Murdaugh told police the night of the killings and three days later that he was never at the kennels with his family, instead taking a short nap several hundred yards away before leaving to visit his ailing mother. Computer data from the SUV indicated he started the vehicle at about 9:06 p.m. and drove off.At nearly the same time, Alex Murdaugh's phone called his wife's phone, which indicated its display came on and there was an orientation change. Defense attorney Phillip Barber suggested to Dove that the person who killed Maggie Murdaugh had her phone in their hand and was surprised at the call, throwing it out the window.Dove said he didn't have enough information, such as how the phone could have been thrown, to agree or disagree. There were no more significant changes to Maggie Murdaugh's phone until it was recovered from the side of the road the next day, Dove said. But about five minutes after she read the final text, Maggie Murdaugh's data indicated her cellphone camera turned on for one second. Dove told prosecutors that can happen when an iPhone is trying to detect a face to see if it is the owner wanting to unlock the phone. The defense suggested a different scenario — that in a panic, she tried to use her phone camera to take a photo of someone.“And if the perpetrator or perpetrator responded by shooting at her, would that explain why it went off in one second and there was a bunch of orientation changes very shorty thereafter?" Barber asked.“There’s a lot of possibilities could happen not knowing how a person reacts," Dove said.Prosecutors also had Dove read a message sent to the family on the day she was killed. Maggie Murdaugh texted someone that she was worried about her husband's health, and after a doctor's appointment that day, she was heading back to the lodge in Colleton County instead of the family's house on Edisto Island."Alex wants me to come home," she texted.Alex Murdaugh also faces about 100 charges related to accusations of money laundering, stealing millions from clients and the family law firm, tax evasion and trying to get a man to fatally shoot him so his surviving son could collect a $10 million life insurance policy. He was being held in jail without bail on those counts before he was charged with murder.Since the killings, Murdaugh’s life has seen a stunningly fast downfall. His family dominated the legal system in tiny Hampton County for generations, both as prosecutors and private attorneys known for getting life-changing settlements for accidents and negligence cases.

More than six weeks after prominent Lowcountry attorney Alex Murdaugh reported being shot in the head off a Hampton County road, South Carolina's Law Enforcement Division has released 911 calls made that day.Murdaugh initially told law enforcement that he was changing a tire on September 4 when someone drove past, stopped and shot him in the head. The incident took place just three months after Murdaugh discovered the bodies of his wife and son on the family's property in Colleton County.TIMELINE: The Murdaugh MurdersExactly 10 days after the roadside incident, Curtis Edward Smith, 61, was arrested in connection with the shooting after Murdaugh confessed to police that it was all a part of an assisted suicide plot.Murdaugh says he wanted his surviving son Buster to collect on a $10 million life insurance policy. On Friday, SLED released three 911 calls placed that day related to the incident: one by a passerby and two made by Murdaugh himself. In the phone call from by a passerby, the caller says she saw a man on the side of the road, covered in blood and waving his hands.Below video: Passerby calls 911, sees Murdaugh bleeding by the side of the roadDispatch: Hampton County 911. Where is your emergency?Caller: We’re on Salkehatchie Road and there is a man on the side of the road with blood all over him waving his hands.Dispatch: He’s just laying there waving his hands?Caller: He looks fine but it kinda looks like a setup so we didn’t stop.Dispatch: Oh I don’t blame you.Murdaugh himself also calls 911 for assistance, during which the dispatcher tries to clarify whether he had been shot at all.Below video: Alex Murdaugh calls 911 after attempted suicide shootingExcerpts from the call:Dispatch: Ok. What’s going on?Murdaugh: I got a flat tire. I stopped and somebody stopped to help me. And when I turned my back they tried to shoot me.Dispatch: Oh OK. Were you shot?Murdaugh: Yes, but I mean, I’m OK.Dispatch: You were shot where? Where were you shot at?Murdaugh: Huh?Dispatch: Did they try to shoot you or did they shoot you?Murdaugh: They shot me.Dispatch: OK. You need EMS?Murdaugh: Uh, well. I mean yes. I can’t drive.Dispatch: OK.Murdaugh: I have trouble seeing and I’m bleeding a lot. When asked to give a suspect description, Murdaugh says the shooter was younger than him, with very short hair.Murdaugh is currently being held without bond in Richland County, South Carolina on charges pertaining to stealing money from the wrongful death settlement involving the longtime family housekeeper Gloria Satterfield. He awaits a psychiatric evaluation. To date, there have been no arrests in the killing of his wife and son.Below video: SLED releases 2nd Alex Murdaugh 911 call after attempted suicide

More than six weeks after prominent Lowcountry attorney Alex Murdaugh reported being shot in the head off a Hampton County road, South Carolina's Law Enforcement Division has released 911 calls made that day.

Murdaugh initially told law enforcement that he was changing a tire on September 4 when someone drove past, stopped and shot him in the head.

The incident took place just three months after Murdaugh discovered the bodies of his wife and son on the family's property in Colleton County.

Exactly 10 days after the roadside incident, Curtis Edward Smith, 61, was arrested in connection with the shooting after Murdaugh confessed to police that it was all a part of an assisted suicide plot.

Murdaugh says he wanted his surviving son Buster to collect on a $10 million life insurance policy.

On Friday, SLED released three 911 calls placed that day related to the incident: one by a passerby and two made by Murdaugh himself.

In the phone call from by a passerby, the caller says she saw a man on the side of the road, covered in blood and waving his hands.

Below video: Passerby calls 911, sees Murdaugh bleeding by the side of the road

Dispatch: Hampton County 911. Where is your emergency?

Caller: We’re on Salkehatchie Road and there is a man on the side of the road with blood all over him waving his hands.

Dispatch: He’s just laying there waving his hands?

Caller: He looks fine but it kinda looks like a setup so we didn’t stop.

Dispatch: Oh I don’t blame you.

Murdaugh himself also calls 911 for assistance, during which the dispatcher tries to clarify whether he had been shot at all.

Below video: Alex Murdaugh calls 911 after attempted suicide shooting

Excerpts from the call:

Dispatch: Ok. What’s going on?

Murdaugh: I got a flat tire. I stopped and somebody stopped to help me. And when I turned my back they tried to shoot me.

Dispatch: Oh OK. Were you shot?

Murdaugh: Yes, but I mean, I’m OK.

Dispatch: You were shot where? Where were you shot at?

Murdaugh: Huh?

Dispatch: Did they try to shoot you or did they shoot you?

Murdaugh: They shot me.

Dispatch: OK. You need EMS?

Murdaugh: Uh, well. I mean yes. I can’t drive.

Dispatch: OK.

Murdaugh: I have trouble seeing and I’m bleeding a lot.

When asked to give a suspect description, Murdaugh says the shooter was younger than him, with very short hair.

Murdaugh is currently being held without bond in Richland County, South Carolina on charges pertaining to stealing money from the wrongful death settlement involving the longtime family housekeeper Gloria Satterfield.

He awaits a psychiatric evaluation.

To date, there have been no arrests in the killing of his wife and son.

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — A prominent South Carolina lawyer has been charged with stealing insurance settlements meant for the sons of his late housekeeper.

State police say Alex Murdaugh was arrested Thursday at a drug rehab facility in Orlando, Florida, where his attorneys say he has spent the past six weeks since claiming he was shot in the head.

Warrants detailing the arrest on two felony counts of obtaining property by false pretenses were not immediately released.

But state police say they involve Murdaugh's housekeeper for decades, Gloria Satterfield.

A lawsuit filed by the housekeeper's sons says Murdaugh arranged for more than $4 million in insurance payments over Satterfield's death but never turned the money over to her family.

According to the lawsuit, Murdaugh told Satterfield’s sons at her February 2018 funeral that he would get insurance settlements for her death, but he only informed them of a $500,000 settlement and then never sent them anything, the Assocated Press reported.

Murdaugh's arrest comes as six law enforcement agencies are investigating him, including the deaths of his wife Maggie and son Paul; allegedly taking millions of dollars from the law firm his great-grandfather founded and allegedly hiring someone to kill him so his surviving son could collect on a $10 million life insurance policy.

Alex Murdaugh, the South Carolina lawyer whose wife and son were shot and killed in June, is now in custody on charges related to a subsequent insurance fraud scheme, according to the Hampton County Sheriff's Office.Murdaugh turned himself in just before 11 a.m. and is expected to have a court hearing at 4 p.m.(Video above/below shows Murdaugh arriving at the detention center) According to court documents, Murdaugh arranged for a former client to kill him so that his surviving son could collect a life insurance payout of about $10 million.TIMELINE: The Murdaugh MurdersOne of Murdaugh's lawyers, Jim Griffin, told CNN that they have been informed an arrest warrant has been issued for Murdaugh on charges of conspiracy to commit insurance fraud. Murdaugh plans to voluntarily surrender at the Hampton County jail by 2 p.m., according to Griffin.Murdaugh was shot in the head on a roadway on Sept. 4 but survived. A family spokesperson had previously blamed the shooting on an unidentified man in a blue truck. However, Murdaugh admitted to authorities Monday that he had conspired with a man — identified by police as Curtis Edward Smith — to kill him as part of the scheme, according to an affidavit to support charges against Smith.Smith went before a judge to face the charges Thursday morning. Read more about that court appearance here and watch the entire hearing below: Murdaugh decided to end his own life, but believed his life insurance policy had a suicide exclusion, his other attorney, Dick Harpootlian, said, and that the scheme "was an attempt on his part to do something to protect" his eldest and only living child.Additionally, state investigators have announced the opening of two other investigations regarding the 2015 unsolved death of a teen as well as the 2018 death of the Murdaugh family's housekeeper. The killings of his wife and son have not been solved, and Murdaugh has denied responsibility.Questions remain over housekeeper death, attorney saysThe South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) announced on Wednesday that it was opening a criminal investigation into the February 2018 death of Gloria Satterfield and the handling of her estate.Satterfield was the Murdaugh family housekeeper for more than two decades before dying in 2018 after what was described as a "trip and fall accident" at the Murdaugh home, according to attorney Eric Bland, who is representing her estate.SLED said it is opening an investigation based upon a request from the Hampton County coroner that highlights inconsistencies in the ruling of Satterfield's manner of death, as well as information gathered during SLED's other ongoing investigations involving Murdaugh."The decedent's death was not reported to the Coroner at the time, nor was an autopsy performed. On the death certificate the manner of death was ruled 'Natural,' which is inconsistent with injuries sustained in a trip and fall accident," the coroner's request to SLED said.Bland filed a lawsuit Wednesday on behalf of Satterfield's estate against Alex Murdaugh, the estate's former attorney Cory Fleming, as well as Palmetto State Bank.Bland told CNN on Wednesday that following her death, her family trusted Murdaugh to help them bring a lawsuit against himself on behalf of the estate."Certainly there were questions by my clients because after she unfortunately fell, she was airlifted to a hospital and she had a traumatic brain injury, she never was able to communicate with them for the next three weeks until she died," Bland told Cuomo. "So, it was Alex Murdaugh who told the story of that she had tripped and fell down the stairs over his dogs.""They trusted him," Bland said. "He hand-walked them to his best friend and college roommate to bring a lawsuit against himself on behalf of the estate."According to Bland, a number of claims were made which all contributed to a settlement, but none of those settlements ever ended up in court, except one for around $500,000 from Lloyds of London insurance."There's no court orders approving any of these settlements. And it's required under the law, if you have a wrongful death or survival case, a judge has to approve the settlements. None of that exists in the court record, and our clients never found out that these cases had settled these claims, until it was printed in the paper by investigative reporters," Bland said.According to the attorney, the claims were settled for more than $2 million, of which his clients have received no part. "It's our job to get them answers, and get them their money back," Bland added. In addition, police are investigating the unsolved death of Stephen Smith, 19, on June 22, roughly two weeks after the killings of Murdaugh's wife and son.SLED said the probe was being reopened based on information gathered while investigating the double homicide.Former client charged in suicide schemeThe man who allegedly shot Murdaugh earlier this month was directed to do so by him, according to an affidavit.Smith, 61, was charged Wednesday with assisted suicide, assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature, pointing and presenting a firearm, insurance fraud and conspiracy to commit insurance fraud, according to SLED.Murdaugh was not fatally wounded when he was shot Sept. 4. Afterward, he called 911 to report he had been shot on a road in Hampton County, South Carolina, according to SLED, and he was taken to a hospital in Savannah, Georgia.Authorities initially described Murdaugh's injury as a "superficial gunshot wound to the head," though Murdaugh's attorneys said his skull was fractured in the shooting.Murdaugh allegedly provided Smith with a firearm and directed Smith to shoot him in the head. Smith admitted Tuesday to being present at the shooting and to disposing of the firearm afterward, the affidavit states. It's not clear whether Smith has retained legal counsel. The Colleton County Sheriff's Office said Smith had a bond hearing on Wednesday morning and received a $5,000 cash surety bond for the meth charge and a personal recognizance bond for the marijuana charge. He was transferred to Hampton County custody on Wednesday afternoon, authorities said.Murdaugh had represented Smith as his attorney on at least two occasions dating back to 2010, according to court records from the Colleton County 14th Judicial Circuit. He first represented Smith in a personal injury lawsuit that Smith brought against a land management company, and Murdaugh is also listed as Smith's attorney for a 2013 traffic infraction, the court documents show.CNN contributed to this report

South Carolina authorities say they took Curtis Edward Smith into custody Tuesday in connection with the shooting earlier this month of prominent South Carolina attorney Alex Murdaugh.Smith, 61, is charged with assisted suicide, assault and battery of a high aggravated nature, pointing and presenting a firearm, distribution of methamphetamine, possession of marijuana, insurance fraud and conspiracy to commit insurance fraud. The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division says Murdaugh told Smith to shoot and kill him.Law enforcement officials also said additional charges in the case are expected and will be announced "at the appropriate time."Murdaugh admitted to the scheme Monday, authorities say. He said he hoped it would lead to Murdaugh's surviving son collecting a $10 million life insurance policy. On Sept. 4, Murdaugh called 911 shortly after 1:30 p.m. to report that he'd been shot on the side of a road in Hampton County, South Carolina.A family spokesperson said Murdaugh pulled off due to a low tire light and that a male driver in a blue pickup truck drove past him. He then came back asking if he was having car trouble and that's when Murdaugh was shot.Murdaugh was airlifted to a hospital in Savannah, Georgia, with what authorities say was a superficial gunshot wound to the head. But the incident report released by the Hampton County Sheriff's Office initially checking the box saying, "No visible injuries."Murdaugh's team pushed back. They released new details about his injuries saying he had entry and exit wounds and his skull was fractured, leading authorities to correct that report now saying there were visible injuries. Murdaugh's family has been the focus of national attention since the brutal, unsolved murders of his wife, Maggie, and 22-year-old son, Paul, this past June. Murdaugh called 911 after finding their bodies, both shot multiple times near the family's hunting lodge. Just one day before Alex Murdaugh said he was shot, the law firm that his family spent decades building announced it had reported to law enforcement and the state bar that Alex had stolen money from the firm. The South Carolina Supreme Court suspended his license.
