<p>
					Airbnb is once again trying to stop people from using its platform to host unauthorized parties ahead of key summer holidays.The company said Wednesday it will be instituting "strict anti-party measures" for Memorial Day weekend for the first time and will reapply the same approach for July Fourth weekend — something it did last year and said was effective.The added measures, which will apply to bookings in the U.S. for users without a history of positive reviews, will prohibit users from booking a home for only one night. The company will also restrict some two-night reservations, such as those made locally or last-minute.Airbnb also said it will add something called "anti-party attestations," which will require guests booking local reservations to confirm they understand its party rules and could be otherwise subject to legal action.The news comes as Airbnb's business bounced back after being decimated in the early months of the pandemic. Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky told analysts on its first-quarter earnings call Tuesday it is already seeing "strong demand for summer bookings and beyond." However, Airbnb continues to grapple with preventing people from using its platform to book properties and host unauthorized parties — some of which have gotten severely out of hand and made headlines over the years.Last month, two teens were killed and several other people injured at a large party held at an Airbnb-rented property in Pittsburgh — many of the guests were minors. Airbnb, which said it banned the person who booked the property, told CNN at the time parties aren't allowed, per its rental agreements, and the event was "thrown without the knowledge or consent of the host."In 2019, Chesky announced a ban on "party houses" after five people were shot and killed at a Halloween party at an Airbnb rental house in Orinda, California. At the time, he said the company was "redoubling our efforts to combat unauthorized parties and get rid of abusive host and guest conduct." Airbnb also launched a 24/7 support hotline to help enforce the ban and began restricting users under the age of 25 from booking home listings in their area if they didn't have a history of positive reviews.In August 2020, Airbnb announced a global ban on parties and events on Airbnb listings amid the public health crisis, restricting gatherings to a maximum capacity of 16 people.In its latest announcement, Airbnb touted the effectiveness of its anti-party measures in weeding out questionable bookings around Independence Day weekend last year. It said more than 126,000 guests without histories of positive reviews were unable to book certain reservations during July 4 weekend last year."The 4th of July weekend in 2021 was quiet and we saw a substantial decrease in reports of disruptive and unauthorized parties," the company said.

<p>Rental homes are red hot these days, whether an Airbnb on the beach, a VRBO in the mountains, or full-time rental homes for your family.</p>
<p>But there are red flags and suspicious words that may be hints the listing is not what it is claimed to be.</p>
<p>A new report by the consumer group <a class="Link" href="https://www.elliott.org/travel-problems/vacation-rental-warning-words-dont-book-if-you-see-this/">Elliott Advocacy</a> lists some words that should make you question the rental, and perhaps move on to another.</p>
<p>Among them:</p>
<p><i>Cozy</i>, which the report says really means tiny, as in "you'll be living in a shoebox." For a couple, that might be romantic. For a family, it could be the worst vacation you have ever experienced.</p>
<p><i>Secluded,</i> which may mean you'll be miles away from anything, and down a gravel road deep in the woods. Make sure your family is OK with that.</p>
<p><i>Classic,</i> which often means aging or dated, with older appliances and bathrooms, and can also mean that is is run down.</p>
<p><i>Secure, </i>which can mean it is in the middle of a a dangerous neighborhood. There is no need to call a rental "secure" in a nice beach town.</p>
<p>And <i>eclectic, </i>which <a class="Link" href="https://www.elliott.org/travel-problems/vacation-rental-warning-words-dont-book-if-you-see-this/">Elliott Advocacy says</a> in one case meant it had a teeny tiny kitchen inside a closet. More often, it means bizarre layouts and weird decorating.</p>
<p><b>Warning signs of a scam</b></p>
<p>And from the <i>doesn't that stink </i>file, the warning signs that a rental may be a scam, especially if you are searching for rentals on Facebook or Craigslist (where listings are not policed).</p>
<p>The<a class="Link" href="https://www.bbb.org/article/news-releases/21034-press-release-bbb-investigation-into-rental-scams"> Better Business Bureau says </a>beware any rental home listing where:</p>
<ul>
<li>You can't learn the location of the house until you apply or pay a deposit.</li>
<li>The price is much lower than similar homes.</li>
<li>If it is a nightly rental, there are no reviews yet.</li>
<li>If it is long-term rental, the landlord wont let you inside the home or apartment until you pay.</li>
</ul>
<p>Bottom line: Check any rental ad carefully for suspicious words, and double check its location, so you don't waste your money.</p>

<p>People around the world are doing their part to help people in Ukraine by booking Airbnb reservations in the country.</p>
<p>Airbnb CEO, Brian Chesky confirmed the news on <a class="Link" href="https://twitter.com/bchesky/status/1499484223614304268">Twitter</a>.</p>
<p>Airbnb users don’t plan on staying in Ukraine, but rather are just booking stays to finally help hosts in the country.</p>
<p>One couple tweeted that they booked a rental unit in Kyiv for one week.</p>
<p>User <a class="Link" href="https://twitter.com/DimaggioEth/status/1499333337780998147">@DimmagioEth</a> wrote, “It's really cheap and can make a small difference right now” and accompanied the Tweet with a screenshot of the conversation between him and an Airbnb host.</p>
<p>As people book Airbnbs in Ukraine, the company is also waiving all guest and host fees for reservations in the Eastern European country.</p>
<p>Outside of Ukraine, the company has offered up to 100,000 homes to Ukrainian refugees.</p>
<p>According to the United Nations, this has the potential to help up to 4 million people.</p>
<p>Airbnb reports more than 357,000 people visited the site to donate or become hosts for refugees.</p>

					Airbnb changed its policy just ahead of New Year's Eve. Many people are not heading out this New Year to celebrate because of the rising cases in COVID-19. The short-term vacation rental booking company announced it will extend its party ban to 2022 with a few new restrictions – all in the name of public health and safety. For one-night reservation guests without a history of positive reviews on Airbnb, they are prohibited from making those reservations. Watch the video above to find the full story.

<p>For teachers and other educators, it has been a bumpy summer full of unknowns.</p>
<p>Used to delivering answers to students, they are now asking questions about what they can expect during the fall semester.</p>
<p>“It’s a lot of uncertainty,” said Jo Pustizzi, a high school teacher in Colorado Springs, Colorado.</p>
<p>The one thing Jo and her husband, Jim, who is also a public school teacher in Colorado Springs, can rely on is the source of income they have been generating from their Airbnb.</p>
<p>Seven years ago, the couple converted their cabin in the Rocky Mountains into a place to stay for out-of-towners looking to escape.</p>
<p>“Jo had to really convince me to do an Airbnb, because we had put so much work into the cabin that I didn’t want someone to abuse it,” Jim said.</p>
<p>Jo and Jim are far from the only ones as well. Airbnb says it has seen more teachers turn to the service as a way to supplement their income.</p>
<p>In 2019, Airbnb says teachers raked in $230 million through rentals. About $81 million of that came during the months of June, July and August, when they were not teaching.</p>
<p>It is a big jump from 2017, when teachers brought in $160 million, $54 million coming during the summer months.</p>
<p>“It’s kind of like our own little business, too, so it is fun,” said Jo. "It’s fun just reading reviews or talking to people on the phone.”</p>
<p>It gives the Pustizzis a way to live their lives a little more loosely as they near retirement age and worry about their pensions amid the pandemic.</p>
<p>It also gives them a chance to look back on reviews knowing they did what they do best: share information and experiences.</p>
<p>"People enjoy the same things that we enjoy and it’s cool,” said Jim.</p>
<p>“It feels good knowing other people are feeling good,” added Jo.</p>
<p>For a couple whose profession and passion is in flux, what more could you ask for?</p>

					Airbnb opened the doors of its properties to 20,000 Afghan refugees globally Tuesday and sought assistance from hosts who rent property through the home-sharing company for more free housing for those fleeing the crisis."The displacement and resettlement of Afghan refugees in the U.S. and elsewhere is one of the biggest humanitarian crises of our time. We feel a responsibility to step up," said CEO Brian Chesky on Twitter. "I hope this inspires other business leaders to do the same. There's no time to waste."The UN Refugee Agency said last month that an estimated 270,000 Afghans had been newly displaced inside the country since January – primarily due to insecurity and violence – bringing the total uprooted population to over 3.5 million.White House officials said 28 U.S. military flights ferried about 10,400 people to safety out of Taliban-held Afghanistan over 24 hours that ended early Monday morning, and 15 C-17 flights over the next 12 hours brought out another 6,660.Airbnb has a history of making free shelter to those in need through its Airbnb.org.Since 2012, Airbnb.org has housed 75,000 people fleeing or responding to a crisis, from COVID-19 health workers and earthquake or fire evacuees or responders, to refugees.Hosts are allowed to sign up for the program through Airbnb.org."If you’re willing to host a refugee family, reach out and I’ll connect you with the right people here to make it happen!," Chesky wrote Tuesday.Airbnb operates in approximately 100,000 cities in almost every country and region across the world.

					Airbnb says efforts to cut down on unauthorized parties in Cincinnati are working. The company banned all parties and events at Airbnb listings in August of last year. Ahead of the Fourth of July holiday weekend, the company is doubling down on those efforts. Changes include blocking guests who do not have a history of positive reviews from booking one-night reservations of entire homes.Efforts to curb large gatherings during the pandemic led the company to restrict guests under age 25 from certain bookings last summer. "In the past year, this technology has blocked or redirected potentially risky reservation attempts from more than 2,000 people in Cincinnati," Airbnb said in a news release.In August, a handyman was shot in Cincinnati's Pendleton neighborhood as he tried to break up a large party at an Airbnb."Steven was someone who was really helpful for a lot of us and to see that happen to him was heartbreaking," said Eric Haberthier, president of the Greater Cincinnati AirBnB Owners Association. "The interesting thing about AirBnBs and illegal parties is that it's been a problem for the past 15 months or so, since COVID showed up, but it was really more of an issue at the beginning, the first four months or so."Haberthier said the association made a list of best practices for Airbnb hosts, which included tips to prevent parties. Those tips include fostering good relationships with neighbors."You know when something's not quite right. If it's someone that's local that's planning on staying at your place and they want to have a lot of people, and they're making the reservation on short notice, chances are you should have a conversation first," he said. "We don't want to be seen as party pads in the city. It'd be a terrible reputation. It's not a sustainable way to build a small business. It's not the way we want our property to be treated."

<p>Summer 2021 will undoubtedly look much different than the summer of lockdown in 2020. With mask mandates slowly lifting and vaccination rates on the rise, AAA expects roads in Ohio to be much busier this weekend.</p>
<p>A survey released by AAA Monday morning says over 1.4 million Ohioans plan to travel for Memorial Day weekend, which is about 86% of the people who traveled pre-pandemic.</p>
<p>The poll shows Ohioans have pent-up restlessness after the pandemic forced everyone to sit out for a year. AAA calls it "revenge travel.”</p>
<p>The poll shows 61% of Ohioans who responded plan on taking a trip, and 33% are thinking of taking just a quick get-away. But 18% of respondents are planning on a longer, more extravagant trip.</p>
<p>While people have all this energy for travel, gas prices could be the one roadblock.</p>
<p>According to Gas Buddy, gas prices this Memorial Day weekend will be the highest they've been since 2014, about $2.98 per gallon. That’s up about a dollar from last year's rate.</p>
<p>Most of that increase is due to the Colonial Pipeline Shutdown. The good news is that it should ease up soon, but Gas Buddy predicts demand may drive prices back up this summer.</p>
