Unfortunately, it's likely this won't be the last time we'll face events like this. And so it's time to familiarize ourselves with the kind of air conditioner filter that can actually keep smoke from entering our homes. The huff post spoke to an expert who recommended looking for H VAC filters the minimum efficiency reporting value rating of 13 or above which you'll see listed as MF 13 in product descriptions and it's easily available on Amazon. In addition, make sure the filter carries the certified asthma and allergy friendly mark as they meet specific standards for allergen reduction. In case you can't find Merv 13 rating or above opt for *** lower level, but make sure to change the filter every few weeks until air quality improves.

KEVIN’S HERE AND THE BIG DEAL IS THE RAIN IS FINALLY GOING TO BE HERE TRYING TO PIN DOWN EXACTLY WHEN IT COMES INTO THE PICTURE THIS WEEKEND. It’s not the first time in recent years that wildfires forced changes to the MLB schedule. A two-game series in Seattle between the Mariners and Giants was moved to San Francisco in September 2020 because of poor air quality caused by West Coast wildfires.

About an hour after Wednesday night's game at Yankee Stadium was postponed, two fans visiting on vacation from Vancouver, British Columbia, were still lingering.

“It’s just circumstances. What do I say? It makes me disappointed because this is one of the highlights of the trip," said Malcolm, who was in town with his daughter and didn't want to give his last name.

“I have a heart condition. That’s the only reason I’m wearing two masks and whatever. And my personal thought is that, why wasn’t it canceled two days ago? Because we knew about all this two days ago. But having said that, I don’t want the players running around and putting out in this, too. It can’t be good for them.”

Technology is changing the way pollution is tracked across the United States.

That is clear in California, where a tool called CalEnviroScreen allows users to find out the relative impact of pollution on their community.

"The idea was to try to understand and address this issue of cumulative impacts," said Dr. John Faust, who works in California's Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment. "CalEnviroScreen is a geographic screening tool that's intended to identify communities in California that are burdened by multiple sources of pollution."

The team at California's OEHHA first published CalEnviroScreen in 2013. The tool is now in its fourth edition.

Californians or other interested parties can look up the relative pollution in any U.S. Census tract in the state.

"There are about 21 [indicators] that represent different types of pollution," said Dr. Faust, "like air quality, water quality ... the presence of solid waste, landfills, and so forth. Each of those has an indicator that is scored in relation to all the other Census tracts in the state. For example, an 89 percentile in a given Census tract means that the score is higher than 89% of the other Census tracts across the state."

The publicly available tool is just one way the data is used.

A 2012 California state law required the state's Environmental Protection Agency to identify communities that are disproportionately impacted by pollution.

CalEnviroScreen was developed to help meet that goal. Data scientists had to assemble a variety of statistics from different state and federal agencies. Experts have called the finished product groundbreaking.

"Bringing all the data sets to a uniform geography, the Census tract, was pretty new for a lot of the data sets in CalEnviroScreen," said Laura August, a scientist at OEHHA. "The data might have existed, but we had to develop methods to aggregate it at a similar uniform scale for all the data sets."

"At this point," said Dr. Faust, "several billions of dollars have been allocated to disadvantaged communities as a result of this program."

The federal government has a similar mapping tool, EJSCREEN. It contains many of the same features as CalEnviroScreen, but does not include state-specific data, such as pesticide reporting.

Other states are developing their own tools.

"Washington state has had a similar initiative, and I know the state of Michigan has also started on this path," said Dr. Faust. "And as I understand, the state of Colorado's department of public health and environment is also committed to looking at the development of a similar tool."

OEHHA leaders say this tool would not have been possible without the technological innovations of the last decade.

"When I started 12 years ago, online, interactive maps weren't as easily developed and created," said August. "And now, it's just kind of a standard, that we can put our data on a map, that someone can search their address. That technology has definitely been a benefit."

SAN DIEGO, Calif. — Wildfires across the West are sending toxic plumes of smoke into the air, affecting cities thousands of miles away.

And as fires grow more frequent and destructive, doctors are raising awareness about the possible risks for pregnant women and their unborn babies.

"Clinicians now are realizing that climate change is impacting our patients today because the events are happening so frequently," said Dr. Marya Zlatnik, OBGYN and maternal-fetal medicine expert at the University of California San Francisco.

Dr. Zlatnik says historically, medical education for pregnant women has focused more on individual choices impacting health, like smoking.

“There’s sort of this whole, broad category of risks we haven’t studied yet. But they’re things we have lots of reason to suspect shouldn’t be ingested by pregnant women or kids," said Dr. Zlatnik.

One year ago, the Bay Area woke to an apocalyptic, smoke-choked sky as fires burned throughout Northern California. Today, fires are consuming the state at the same pace.

The toxic particles in wildfire smoke are small enough to enter the lungs and bloodstream. And Dr. Zlatnik says researchers are now finding soot from wildfires in placentas.

“Anything that damages the placenta or causes inflammation in the placenta can potentially sort of directly harm the baby or lead to problems with pregnancy, like preterm birth, or the baby not growing as well.”

A study published last month found there may have been as many as 7,000 additional premature births in California attributable to wildfire smoke exposure between 2007 and 2012.

“That can have a lifelong impact for that baby. Prematurity is probably the number one cause of neural developmental problems and is certainly very expensive and very scary for parents," said Dr. Zlatnik. "Anything we can do to avoid unnecessary inflammation is something that could potentially really have long-term beneficial health impacts.”

Authors of the new study note that premature births cost the U.S. healthcare system an estimated $25 billion per year, and that even modest reductions in preterm birth risk could greatly benefit society.

Expecting her first child in October, Laura Canton says she's hyper-aware of the changing climate as she thinks about her daughter's future.

“When we walk on the beach, we see bottle caps, plastic bottles, Legos, just everywhere on the beach. It’s sad to know Ocean is going to grow up and may not get to go to Yosemite or the forest because it's going to be gone," said Canton.

Living in San Diego, she's experienced the hazy fog of wildfires.

“The clouds come in, and you can see it’s a different haze. The sunsets are really orange," said Canton. "It’s very dry here. So, if one house lights up, our houses are so close together, it could take down the whole city, it is scary.”

Dr. Zlatnik says there are steps pregnant women can take to protect themselves and their unborn children.

She recommends patients monitor air quality, checking the news, or using phone apps like AirVisual and Plume Air Report.

"The best way to improve air is to use either a home fan, air conditioning system that has a high-quality MERVE 13 filter that's going to filter out the PM2.5 material or a portable air cleaner, air purifier, that’s filtering out that particulate matter.”

A more affordable option, making one at home with a box fan and a furnace filter.

“I didn’t use to advise this for the women I care for in pregnancy, that they needed to invest in one of these things," said Dr. Zlatnik. "But that’s one of the ways that people who are pregnant can protect themselves.”

MEMPHIS — Dealing with COVID-19 has been a sticky situation for schools.

But at the Bornblum Jewish Community School in Memphis, they’re turning to new technology to keep air quality clean.

“We have a new filter system being installed in the school right now,” said Daniel Weiss, the head of school at Bornblum.

Proper ventilation and air quality are part of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommendations for keeping schools open and children safe.

“More or less it works like a human nose,” said Clemens Sparowitz, chief operating officer of Dexwet, which makes the air filters that are being installed at the school.

They are coated with a sticky substance that is designed to catch particles in the air.

“The filters get moistured with liquid and so any particle that collides with the filter is permanently bonded in there,” said Sparowitz.

Air quality is a concern for small schools like Bornblum as well as large schools like the ones in the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD), where more than 600,000 students learn every day.

“We upgraded to MERV 13. That’s 110 thousand filters. MERV 13s are made out of the same raw material that N-95 and hospital gowns are made out of,” said Robert Laughton, the director of maintenance and operations for LAUSD.

“We spent last summer, close to $3 million, re-wiring every air conditioner in the district, just to run 24 hours a day, seven days a week,” he added.

The CDC recommends that air systems start running at least two hours before someone needs to be in the room. All of the improvements, big and small, can be expensive.

The COVID-19 relief bill, passed in March, included over $120 billion in funds for schools, some of which is specifically earmarked for ventilation improvements.

“The biggest concern always was, how's the air inside the building?” said Weiss.

For Weiss, focusing on air quality and experimenting with new technologies is helping him keep his students exactly where they need to be.

“There’s nothing better than having a full classroom on campus, learning with their teacher, being able to experience all of the things the teacher wants them to do. You can’t do that in the same way when you’re learning virtually. We needed to be on campus," said Weiss.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – In a world seemingly on lockdown, the earth may be breathing easier for the moment.

“These lockdown measures are having an impact,” said Susan Anenberg, a professor of environmental and global health at George Washington University, in Washington, D.C.

She said, with vehicle traffic down by at least 50% because of the coronavirus restrictions, it’s making a difference in the world’s air quality.

“The fewer cars we have on the road commuting, the less air pollution and the less greenhouse gas emissions we’ll have,” Anenberg said.

That can make a big difference for everyone, but especially those with underlying conditions like asthma, which makes them more susceptible to the coronavirus. It brought a small sigh of relief for some in Phoenix, where poor air quality is common.

“Sometimes, I’ve had to rush to the hospital three times a day, scared because my daughter couldn’t breathe,” said Beatriz Beltran, a resident of South Phoenix. “We have a lot of air pollution in this area.”

During the lockdown, scientists are observing other environmental changes as well, including the fact that with more people staying put, the earth is simply more still. Seismologists said that is leading to fewer ground vibrations detected around the world.

For the world’s marine life, fewer people on the beach and on the water means creatures there are getting a break – like endangered sea turtles, who are now able to nest in Florida, without as much human interference, for now.

“This is going to provide a short period of time for sea turtles, manatees and the like to experience the beach as it once was decades ago,” said Jackie Kingston, director of Sea Turtle Adventures in Florida.

However, Anenberg said these changes are temporary and a pandemic is not the way to achieve long-term environmental changes. Once the lockdowns are lifted, she said things will probably go back to the way they were and, in some instances, could potentially get worse.

“If people somehow become afraid to ride public transportation - transition to more passenger vehicle trips - I think we actually could come out of this potentially with more air pollution,” Anenberg said. “And so, I think this is the time to be thinking about how to strengthen our air quality regulations and ensure that that type of rebound effect does not occur.”

It’s also worth reflecting, she said, on all that’s changed since that first Earth Day 50 years ago.

Because of political pressure brought on by the first Earth Day, eight months later, in December 1970, the U.S. government established the Environmental Protection Agency. To this day, the EPA is responsible for enforcing the nation’s laws and regulations, when it comes to the environment.
