<p>Numerous schools in Colorado and Idaho were put on lockdown Wednesday after someone reported threats, which police believe were part of a hoax. </p>
<p>Boulder Police Chief Maris Harold told reporters Wednesday that dispatchers received a call in the morning from a male who said he was going to Boulder High School when the sound of gunshots could be heard in the background.</p>
<p>Boulder Police cleared the school, but there were no confirmed injuries. </p>
<p>Threat calls were also made to schools in Colorado, including in Aspen, Alamosa, Brighton and Canon City. In all the cases, the schools were cleared of any threat. </p>
<p>In Idaho, the Caldwell Police Department said there were a number of "non-legitimate" threats made at several schools Wednesday morning. Officers continue to respond, but they believe the threats are part of a wide-reaching hoax. </p>
<p>"In the past week, similar instances involving hoax calls into schools have occurred in Oregon, California, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, and Nevada," the Caldwell Police Department said in a statement. </p>
<p>A spokesperson for the Boulder Police Department said the FBI is now helping investigate the source of the calls. </p>

<p>DENVER — Oftentimes, hoax perpetrators are seeking attention and reaction from the community, and we don’t want to help them in that pursuit. We also don’t want to encourage copycat hoaxes.</p>
<p>However, as <a class="Link" href="https://www.denver7.com/news/local-news/several-colorado-school-districts-receive-threats-wednesday-morning-placing-many-students-under-lockdowns">at least 14 Colorado schools</a> received “swatting” calls Wednesday, specialists point to a growing trend we believe you should be aware of.</p>
<p>Swatting is the act of calling first responders with a fake emergency to coax them into sending a significant police presence to a specific address</p>
<p>Ken Trump, president of National School Safety and Security Services, says he’s been tracking a “spate of school swatting threats that has gone on for months” across the United States. He says many previous mass swatting events have been traced to actors from foreign countries.</p>
<p>“Swatting threats typically cross multiple school districts, multiple communities, oftentimes multiple states and originate internationally,” Trump said. “They create anxiety, fear, uncertainty about school safety, drain local first responders from other needs out in the broader community, and can extend over a period of time while the investigation goes on — oftentimes for weeks or sometimes months.”</p>
<p>While it is, at this point, unclear if the multiple threats to Colorado schools were coordinated, Trump says these bad actors often have the specific goal of creating chaos, confusion and fear.</p>
<p>“These threats typically turn out to be unfounded, not credible, but every threat needs to be treated seriously [and] investigated thoroughly,” Trump said. “There’s not only a massive drain of law enforcement resources, but also swatting fatigue and fatigue by school districts: the risk of school communities not taking threats seriously, becoming complacent, and not treating each one seriously when there could be one possible threat that turns out to be credible.”</p>
<p>Sergeant Ryan Scheevel with the Boulder Police Department says he was impressed by the response of students and staff at Boulder High School Wednesday morning. The entire school’s lockdown procedure made law enforcement’s job of evacuating and sweeping the school for the potential threat much easier.</p>
<p>“It was very obvious that they had trained for that,” Scheevel said. “I would implore all schools, employers, anything like that to have a plan in place.”</p>
<p>Scheevel was just a couple hours into his shift Wednesday morning when he heard a weapons tone over his radio, and dispatchers relaying reports of a possible active shooter at Boulder High School. He and his fellow officers quickly realized the threat was likely a hoax, both through conversations with school administrators and messages from dispatch of other fake threats being called in across the state. Still, they had to push forward, per protocol, to ensure it was, in fact, a false alarm.</p>
<p>“We went and had them go into lockdown, and then started going [on] a systematic search of the school, hoping that we weren’t going to find anything, but planning that if we [did] find something — whether it’s a suspect or a victim or somebody’s injured — that we have the resources and a plan in place to deal with that,” Scheevel said.</p>
<p>Even after the all-clear, Scheevel and his fellow officers had to rely on their training and support from one another to process the other great cost of swatting threats: the emotional drain it puts on our law enforcement, teachers, and students.</p>
<p>“Two of my kids are school age, so anytime we get a call at a school, it definitely heightens your sense of what’s going on there,” he said. “When you’ve removed yourself from you that situation, you really think about like, 'That could have been my kids in there.’”</p>
<p>This article was written by <a class="Link" href="https://www.denver7.com/news/local-news/the-cost-of-swatting-threats-to-our-schools-law-enforcement-and-communities">Rob Harris for Scripps News Denver.</a></p>

<p>NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — A man who shot and killed four people at a Nashville Waffle House in a 2018 early morning attack has been found guilty on four counts of 1st-degree murder. </p>
<p>A jury returned the verdict Friday after about four hours of deliberations. </p>
<p>Travis Reinking did not dispute the details of the shooting, which was caught on surveillance video and witnessed by numerous people. </p>
<p>But he had pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity. </p>
<p>Evidence showed the 33-year-old Reinking had schizophrenia and had suffered delusions for years, believing that unknown people were tormenting him. </p>
<p>Prosecutors presented evidence that Reinking was calm and cooperative after his arrest, able to understand and respond to commands.</p>
<p>The same jury that convicted Reinking will decide his fate.</p>
<p>He faces life in prison without the possibility of parole. However, the jury may decide Reinking could be eligible for parole after 51 full calendar years.</p>

<p>One person was killed and at least 12 others were injured in a shooting at a Kroger in Collierville, Tennessee, which is just outside of Memphis.</p>
<p>Collierville Police Chief Dale Lane said in a press briefing Thursday that the suspected shooter, a male, is dead of what is believed to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Dale added that there are no known additional threats. </p>
<p>The shooting began at 1:30 CDT, according to Lane. He said the response was almost immediate.</p>
<p>While responding to the shooting, Lane said officers found one person hiding on the roof and others inside the store.</p>
<p>"They found people hiding in freezers, in offices," Lane said.</p>
<p>Lane said the suspect's vehicle is still in the grocery store parking lot and is being examined. Bomb technicians were called to secure the vehicle out of an abundance caution, but Dale wouldn't say whether anything of significance was found.</p>
<p>A worker at the Collierville Kroger told <a class="Link" href="https://www.commercialappeal.com/story/news/crime/2021/09/23/active-shooter-collierville-kroger-reported-memphis-area/5831626001/">commercialappeal.com</a> that she heard what sounded like a gunshot, and ran out of the store. </p>
<p>"I left my purse, my keys, everything," Glenda McDonald told the news outlet. </p>
<p>A spokesperson for Kroger said counseling is being made available for all workers. </p>
<p>She added that the store would be closed until further notice. </p>

<p>
Wright-Patterson Air Force Base was placed on lockdown for over four hours Thursday evening into early Friday morning. The base’s command center operator confirmed that the base was placed on lockdown at around 9:35 p.m. The lockdown was announced over loudspeakers.According to the 88th Air Base Wing, authorities responded to a report of an active shooter in the National Air and Space Intelligence Center in Area A at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. Two people believed they heard gunshots and reported it, which led to a response.Officials said security forces are currently sweeping the building while the base is on lockdown. It's unclear at this time if shots have been fired which is why security is sweeping the building. The three-story building is about 850,000 square feet. Officials said there's a lot of secure spaces, some of which are owned by other agencies. People are having to come in to provide access to secure spaces so that security forces can complete their sweep. Therefore, the size of the building and the search of secure spaces is why the search took several hours to conduct and continued into the overnight hours. The lockdown means no one was allowed to come in the building, leave the building or move about on base. Employees and residents were to stay in their building or house and only key emergency officials were allowed to move. Local law enforcement were staged for mutual aid if needed. At around 1:45 a.m., officials announced an "all clear" at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and lifted the lockdown. They did not report their findings but said they would release more information when available. No injuries have been reported at this time."We understand there are concerns and questions," 88th Air Base Wing tweeted just before 11 p.m. "Our first priority is to protect our people. All of our military and civilian employees are trained to quickly assess the situation and take appropriate action."Nearby, Wright State University sent out a message to students and employees saying they should stay clear of the areas toward the north end of campus, such as Kauffman Avenue and Ohio State Route 844. Students are advised to "take appropriate safety precautions to protect themselves if necessary."Wright-Patterson Air Force Base is located just east of Dayton, Ohio.WLWT has a reporter at the scene and will provide updates when more information is available.

A shooting at a Maryland business park Tuesday left two people critically injured and the suspect dead, police said, while the U.S. Navy reported an "active shooter incident" at Fort Detrick involving sailors. The shooter went into a business, causing people inside to flee, Frederick Police Chief Jason Lando said. He could not say whether the shooting was inside or outside. He said after that shooting the suspect drove about 10 minutes to Fort Detrick and was killed there. The first shooting happened at the Riverside Tech park, about 4 miles from Fort Detrick. The Navy did not release further details. The two male victims were flown to Shock Trauma in Baltimore."We have two different scenes. All I can tell you is that we have confirmed there is only one shooter. The public is no longer at risk. Everyone is safe,” Lando said.Police said the 38-year-old male suspect traveled to the military base and was fatally shot by personnel on the base. Police said there is only one shooter and there is no more risk, no further cause for alarm in the Frederick community. Jeremy Mutschler, director of marketing for Nicolock Paving Stones, said that his understanding is that the shooting was near the company's Frederick location but not at the business itself."One of the victims who was wounded entered our facility looking for help and we were able to assist and call the authorities," said Mutschler, who is based in New York.Gov. Larry Hogan has been briefed, and the Maryland State Police is assisting in the investigation. Special Agents and a K-9 team from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are responding to Frederick. This is a developing story. The Associated Press contributed to this report.
