Five members of an Amish family are recovering after a driver crashed into their buggy Saturday afternoon in Missouri. Truman Gingerich, 38, and his wife Ada Gingerich, 33, were returning from a church service with three of their six children, three daughters ages three, five and seven.According to the crash report from the Missouri State Highway Patrol, a 71-year-old driver of a 2003 Mercury struck the rear of the Gingerich buggy. All five members of the Gingerich Family were taken to area hospitals. They’ve all been released except the 5-year-old girl. "The Lord was looking out for them because they shouldn’t be here," said Dan Atkinson.Atkinson is a friend and neighbor of the Gingerich family and was one of the first people to arrive at the crash site. The broken pieces of the buggy are lined up against a fence on the Gingerich property."I looked for it. I realized when I saw the broken wheels everywhere that the pieces of the buggy were all over the highway," Atkinson said.Truman Gingerich later told Atkinson the real horror of the crash, wondering if his daughters would survive."He said, Dan, you don’t understand how hard it was when I looked up, and I tried to get up, and I could see my little girls lying in the highway, and they were lifeless," Atkinson said. "And he tried to get to them, and he was trying to get up off the ground, and when he got to them, he said he couldn’t get them to wake up or nothing,"Atkinson spent part of Tuesday with extended Gingerich family members taking a buggy to be repaired for Truman’s family to use.The family horse also had to be put down at the crash site due to injuries.Residents of the Holden community have been rallying around the Gingerich Family, including providing them with meals and raising money to help with medical expenses. The Missouri State Highway Patrol cited the driver for careless and imprudent driving. The case has not yet been referred to the Johnson County Prosecutor for possible criminal charges.

A man and a woman are confirmed dead after a firetruck crashed into a building in Kansas City's Westport neighborhood, and a third unidentified woman has also been found dead. The incident happened around 10:30 p.m. Wednesday.A Kansas City Fire Department firetruck was heading to a fire call, with lights and sirens on, when it hit an SUV.The firetruck then crashed into a building. Firefighters said two people who died, a man and a woman, were in the SUV.Firefighters spent late Wednesday night searching for someone in the rubble of the building. No firefighters were seriously hurt in the crash."They went back to the station, I sent them home for the evening. Just because they were shook up as well," Fire Chief Donna Lake said. Authorities were told by a witness that a third person was walking on the sidewalk in front of the building at the time of the crash and collapse. The building is the former home of a bar and concert venue that closed two months ago. "That could have been really bad because 10:30 is pretty busy at a bar at least," Neighboring store owner Roman Khachaturyan said.

<p>CLEVELAND HEIGHTS, Ohio — An Ohio man is now dealing with significant damage to his home after a police chase ended in a crash with the car lodged inside his kitchen. </p>
<p>It happened early on Friday morning in Cleveland Heights at South Taylor Road and Fairmount Boulevard.</p>
<p>John Gall said he was sleeping inside his home when a car came crashing through his brick bungalow just after midnight on Friday morning. </p>
<p>"There was a car in my kitchen and police with guns swarming around the house," Gall said. "I stuck my head out the broken front window and said, 'Please don't shoot me, I'm the homeowner.'"</p>
<p>Gall said Cleveland Heights Police officers on the scene told him they were chasing the driver on South Taylor Road right before the driver crashed.</p>

<p>"I understand pursuits. I'm not sure I understand 85 miles an hour coming down Taylor road here," he said. </p>
<p>Gall said he never saw the driver but added he witnessed the person being taken away in an ambulance.</p>
<p>Todd Freeman lives next door. He said car accidents at this intersection are so common that he wasn't surprised when he came outside to see what happened.</p>

<p>"I was sound asleep. As soon as I heard the hit, I knew that one of the two houses had been hit by a car. I mean, I knew the sound well by now," Freeman said.</p>
<p>This is not the first time Gall's property has been damaged by accidents. </p>
<p>In 2012, WEWS covered a crash at his home where his truck was hit by a vehicle. </p>
<p>Gall said since then. He has been proactive about getting more protective guarding at the intersection to prevent damage to his home. But, Gall said, his requests to city hall have been denied. </p>

<p>"I talked to City Hall about it in the past, and they claim that the putting up of a guardrail, which would've probably prevented a majority of this, was unaesthetic and not pleasing to the neighborhood, so they rejected that," he said. "I'm going to have to seek more drastic measures in the future, I think. I'm not sure what that will be, but they will find out."</p>
<p>News 5 reached out to the city to see what it would take to get a guard rail in front of a home, and they said they would respond next week. </p>
<p>Daylight photos show more of the damage caused by the crash.</p>

Video above: Car data recorder will aid in Woods crash probeTiger Woods was moved Thursday to another Los Angeles hospital after undergoing surgery to his right leg after being badly injured in a car crash.Harbor-UCLA Medical Center said Woods was transferred to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center for “continuing orthopedic care and recovery." The hospital didn't provide any other details, saying it was respecting patient confidentiality. “On behalf of our staff, it was an honor to provide orthopedic trauma care to one of our generation’s greatest athletes," Dr. Anish Mahajan, Harbor-UCLA's chief medical officer, said in a statement.Woods was hurt Tuesday when a 2021 Genesis SUV he was driving on a downhill stretch of road struck a raised median in a coastal Los Angeles suburb, crossed into oncoming lanes and flipped several times.Mahajan earlier said Woods shattered the tibia and fibula bones of his lower right leg in multiple locations. Those injuries were stabilized with a rod in the tibia. Additional injuries to the bones in the foot and ankle required screws and pins, Mahajan said in the statement released on Woods’ Twitter account late Tuesday night.Woods was wearing a seatbelt and there wasn't any evidence that he was impaired by drugs or alcohol, Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva said after the crash. However, the crash investigation continues.Harbor-UCLA Medical Center is a Level 1 trauma center, meaning it is qualified to provide the most comprehensive surgical and other care for such injuries. The county supervisor who represents the area has requested a safety review of the roadway, where cars are known to gain speed because of the steep grade and authorities have said wrecks are common. In 2017, Woods was arrested on a DUI charge when Florida police found him asleep behind the wheel of his car parked awkwardly on the side of the road, with its engine still running, two flat tires and a blinker flashing.Woods said he had an unexpected reaction to pain medication. Three weeks after the arrest, he entered a clinic for help dealing with prescription medication and a sleep disorder. The crash this week was the latest setback for Woods, who has won 15 major championships and a record-tying 82 victories on the PGA Tour. He is among the world’s most recognizable sports figures, and at 45, even with a reduced schedule from nine previous surgeries, remains golf’s biggest draw.He was in Los Angeles over the weekend as the tournament host of the Genesis Invitational at Riviera Country Club. for the dog owners out there, throw them a bone this fourth and protect their ears. Same goes with cats otherwise the noise from the fireworks could be fatal. Take it from veterinarians, the new york post spoke with a Brooklyn based veterinarian told the post. Male cats can get so stressed out by loud noises. It can lead to life threatening obstructions down there. The infection in their bladder makes it difficult for them to urinate and this can be fatal. Call your vet if you notice blood in their urine or see them running in and out of the litter box. But Fido's not off the hook or the leash, you're not alone. If you notice your dog doesn't want to go on walks late at night or trembles when you go outside, a different veterinarian tells the post. Constant stressful events like fireworks can have psychological or behavioral long term effects they can get so spooked that they run away more dogs run away in july than any other month. According to studies by the American Society for the prevention of cruelty to animals or a. S. P. C. A. To keep your pets safe. NBC News says make sure all the windows and doors are closed. Make sure their I. D. Collars on and current or play youtube videos of fireworks until your four legged friend gets used to the sound loud tv or radio noise can help drown out the fireworks. Taking them for a walk or having playtime before the festivities should tire them out. Another route is to talk to your veterinarian about anti anxiety medication and give them a practice dose before the big night to see how they'll react.

It felt like his missing thumbnail was being ripped off, he said. On his absent index finger and ring finger, it seemed, "somebody was driving a needle or pin straight down the middle of the bone," he said.At times, he sensed, "my hand was clenched like a fist, and my knuckles were being dragged across rough gravel," said Shortreed, a Marine Corps veteran. "It was absolutely torturous and excruciating, and this was 24-7."His doctors at Madison's Veterans Hospital increased the dosage of his medications. In addition to over-the-counter pain relievers, he was taking muscle relaxants, nerve medications and the opioid painkillers morphine and oxycodone. One of the nerve medications, gabapentin, gave him "brain fog," he said. As the weeks wore on, he felt he was becoming addicted to the opioids. He started having hallucinations, imagining he was locked in a box and bones were buried in his basement. He wasn't sure how he could keep running his business. He and his wife, Kara Flentje, who were trying to adopt a daughter from Colombia, wondered if they would have to stop the process."Sleep was by pure exhaustion. I was lucky to get 90 minutes from time to time," Shortreed said. "This was definitely taking me to the breaking point."Pain reliefIn mid-August, at UW Health's pain clinic, he tried a procedure called peripheral nerve stimulation. Two thin wires were implanted near a bundle of nerves between his neck and shoulder. For 60 days, he wore a small transmitter on his chest that stimulated the wires with electricity."I had immediate relief," he said. "I haven't had a single phantom pain or feeling since."The effect can be long term because the process resets pain receptors, said Dr. Alaa Abd-Elsayed, medical director of UW Health's pain clinic, who performed the outpatient procedure."You lock the gate so other stimuli cannot travel to the brain," Abd-Elsayed said. "When pain comes through the same pathway, it will find the gate closed by another stimulation and will not travel."The device, by Cleveland-based SPR Therapeutics, was approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 2018. It is also being used at UW Health on patients with back, foot and chest pain, Abd-Elsayed said. When Shortreed tried to stop taking the opioids all at once, he got sick from withdrawal. But he managed to wean himself off the drugs in two weeks. By January, he was off all pain and nerve medication."It wasn't until I had clarity being drug-free did I realize how impaired I actually was on that cocktail of drugs," he said.Toward normalcyShortreed has two prostheses, a basic one he uses for work around the house and a flexible, waterproof one with sensors that read muscle movement on his forearm to allow the hand to open, close and grip. He's back to running Avid Risk Solutions with co-founder Brock Ryan, and the two have joined others in starting or acquiring companies involved in clothing, antimicrobial products, golf equipment and track-and-field competitions. In April, Shortreed and Flentje adopted Ashly Elaine, a 13-year-old girl from Colombia they hosted in December 2019 through an orphan housing agency. Prosecutors in Taiwan said Saturday they questioned the owner of an unmanned truck that rolled onto a rail track and caused the country's worst train disaster in decades that killed 51 people and injured 146, though no charges have been filed. The train was carrying 494 people at the start of a long holiday weekend on Friday when it smashed into the construction truck that slid down a hillside above the tracks, the Taiwan Railways Administration said. Many passengers were crushed just before the train entered a tunnel, while some survivors were forced to climb out of windows and walk along the train's roof to safety. The truck's emergency brake was not properly engaged, according to the government's disaster relief center. The district prosecutor's office in eastern Hualien County, where the train derailed, confirmed it had interviewed the truck owner, among others, but was not ready to file charges. Prosecutorial staff were visiting a mortuary Saturday to examine the bodies, office spokeswoman Chou Fang-yi said.President Tsai Ing-wen was due to visit the site later Saturday."We have asked the Transportation Safety Committee to conduct a strict investigation of the accident, and after fully clarifying the cause of the accident, we will explain it to everyone," Tsai told reporters Friday."We're asking passengers to forgive us for any delays," she said.Transportation Minister Lin Chia-lung said repairs will be accelerated."When such a thing happens, I feel very sorry and I will take full responsibility," Lin said after touring the site.Taiwan Railways Administration chief Chi Wen-chung said his team had successfully removed the first derailed carriage out of the site. Two large construction cranes could be seen drawn up next to the train, as workers examined and removed some parts in a remote wooded cliff area on the island's east coast.Repair work also was underway on the tracks including the tunnel where part of the eight-car train crashed. The operation should be done within a week, said Weng Hui-ping, head of the railway administration's news group. During the repairs, all east coast trains will run on a track parallel to the one damaged in the accident, causing delays of 15 to 20 minutes, he said. The National Fire Service confirmed the death toll — which included the train's young, newly married driver and the assistant driver — and said more than 100 people were injured. The government's disaster response center said it was the worst rail disaster in 73 years.Train travel is popular during Taiwan's four-day Tomb Sweeping holiday, when families often return to hometowns to pay respects at the gravesites of their elders.Taiwan is a mountainous island, and most of its 24 million people live in the flatlands along the northern and western coasts that are home to most of the island's farmland, biggest cities and high-tech industries. The lightly populated east where the crash happened is popular with tourists, many of whom travel there by train to avoid mountain roads.___Jennings reported from Taipei, Taiwan.

<p>MASSILLON, Ohio — Afton Taylor died as a result of <a class="Link" href="https://www.news5cleveland.com/news/local-news/oh-stark/northeast-ohio-couple-spreading-awareness-of-boating-dangers-after-losing-son-to-carbon-monoxide-poisoning">carbon monoxide poisoning</a> on a routine boat trip in 2019. Now, his parents want to warn others.</p>
<p>Water is the backdrop of some of Krissy and Doug Taylor’s best memories.</p>
<p>Doug grew up on his father’s boat and, as tradition, began taking his kids on that same boat when they were young, too.</p>
<p>“It’s a boat I’d been on for 20 years. We are very seasoned boaters,” he said.</p>
<p>Doug is a North Canton firefighter. He said he always took proper safety precautions on the boat, especially with his children.</p>
<p>June 30, 2019, started out like any other trip to Salt Fork State Park. The couple brought their 7-year-old son Afton and his younger brother out on the boat.</p>
<p>“We were just boating as we normally do,” said Krissy. </p>
<p>“It was one of the best days we’ve ever had. He didn’t even fight with his brother that day,” said Doug.</p>
<p>That day turned into a tragedy as they were getting ready to leave.</p>
<p>“We’ve been going through no-wake zones with dangling feet in the water for as long as I can remember,” said Doug Taylor.</p>
<p>Afton was sitting in the back of the boat as it was moving at a slow speed in the no-wake zone.</p>
<p>“I looked over [to see] if he was OK, he gave me a thumbs-up, I went back to rolling up a rope to make sure everything was secure for the trip, and then he was gone,” said Doug. “That was the last time we saw him before we had to identify his body.”</p>
<p>The couple came to the realization that Afton fell off the boat. Officials searched for the little boy for hours and the next day, using sonar equipment, they found his body. It was concluded that he drowned.</p>
<p>“We knew our son could swim. We thought that was very odd,” said Krissy. </p>
<p>“My son was a swimmer. He’s been in the water since he was 6 months old,” added Doug.</p>
<p>It was a month later when the official report came out: Afton died of carbon monoxide poisoning.</p>
<p>“He was gone before he even touched that water,” said Krissy.</p>
<p>Officials warn the colorless and odorless gas can emit from the engine and can create a toxic vacuum of fumes at the back of the boat. It’s especially dangerous at slow speeds or when the boat is docked and the engine is on.</p>
<p>“It is an open boat, mid-engine boat and going at a slow speed, the exhaust is underneath the boat, underneath the back deck,” said Doug.</p>
<p>Doug, being a firefighter and an avid boater, never knew about the dangers of carbon monoxide in the open water. Krissy said they had never been warned about carbon monoxide poisoning on a boat.</p>
<p>“We’ve all sat back there. We all sat on those back seats, too. It’s what they’re for,” she said.</p>
<p>Now, through their pain, they want to share their story.</p>
<p>“When we lost Afton, there was just this hole right here and it never ever gets filled again, and it’s just this emptiness. That’s a good and bad thing because when I feel that emptiness, it’s like I have to do something. We have to do something. We have to tell other people about this and that’s what we are doing,” she said.</p>
<p>They want other parents to know that smaller children should never be in the back of the boat at low speeds, as carbon monoxide can poison their bodies at a faster rate.</p>
<p>“The proper way is for everybody to sit in the front of the boat,” said Doug. “Even the open air boats can be and is very dangerous to small children if you don’t know.”</p>
<p>T.J. Martin with the Parma Fire Department said it is important to buy a carbon monoxide detector for your boat, no matter what type it is and, especially, if you have a small indoor cabin.</p>
<p>“When you take the cabin of a boat, which is substantially smaller than a house, and emit carbon monoxide to the area, the area fills up exponentially quicker,” said Martin.</p>
<p>Martin said if you feel like you may have carbon monoxide poisoning, get into fresh air as fast as possible, away from the engine, and call 911.</p>
<p>The Taylors are working to create a law in Ohio dedicated to Afton and creating more awareness about carbon monoxide poisoning on boats.</p>
<p>They have started “<a class="Link" href="https://www.lovelikeafton.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Love Like Afton</a>,” which is an organization dedicated to spreading information about carbon monoxide poisoning and dedicated to acts of kindness, like buddy benches at schools. They said their boy had a big heart and loved everyone.</p>
<p>“We just want to spread his love the best we can,” said Krissy.</p>
<p>Symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning include a headache, weakness, fatigue, nausea or vomiting, shortness of breath, confusion, blurred vision, and loss of consciousness.</p>

"I didn't expect this at all."A motorcade of Owen's friends and family escorted the teen's vehicle to the Emanuel Lutheran Church in Council Bluffs, Iowa, for a "welcome back" celebratory party Thursday evening.Owen hadn't been home to Council Bluffs since February when a snowboarding accident paralyzed him from the shoulders down.Dozens of his classmates, teammates, friends and family filled the room to show their support.Owen spent the past three months in the hospital and at Madonna Rehabilitation."It's been tough. It could only be me and my husband there the whole time and what 17-year-old boy wants to hang out with his mom and dad for 98 days?" said Owen's mom, Jolene Hansen.Doctors said he is well enough to be back, but he still faces a lot of therapy."So we'll have PT and an OT come to the house for the first four weeks," said Hansen.
