The opening of the 95th Academy Awards on Sunday is going to be a "moment," the show's producers promise. But they won't say what exactly it is – A montage? A Billy Crystal-inspired skit where Jimmy Kimmel pretends to be in all the best picture nominees? A secret performance? Tom Cruise landing a jet atop the Dolby Theatre? It will not, however, include Lady Gaga — the best original song nominee is currently in the midst of production on the "Joker" sequel. Glenn Weiss and Ricky Kirshner, this year's executive producers and showrunners, are certain that it's going to pull audiences in and keep them engaged for the duration. Both Weiss and Kirshner are live television veterans. They've done the Grammys, Tonys, Emmys, the Super Bowl and even a presidential inauguration. But the Oscars is a first for Kirshner."There's only a few shows on the bucket list," Kirshner said. "I needed to go for the awards show EGOT." Video below: A chef recommends pairing popcorn and wine for your Oscars viewing partyIt's a job not everyone is cut out for. One might even wonder why Weiss, who was the director of the show when both Envelopegate and The Slap happened, would want to put himself through it again."I think part of what scares a lot of people away from what I love about live television is having to think on your feet and keep moving forward and changing despite what's in the script," Weiss said. "A lot of directors are all about what's in the script. I think my energy comes from leaving that script and going forward. Any particular incident aside, I really love the thrill of live television." The producers' goal this year is to celebrate a great year of movies. And it doesn't hurt that they have several billion-dollar blockbusters in the mix, with "Top Gun: Maverick" and "Avatar: The Way of Water" both up for best picture. And though their involvement was decided much earlier than usual, it always ends up being a race to the finish: There's only so much planning that can be done before they know who the nominees are."I really think that the nominations have put so much interesting material in front of us," Weiss said. "We want to keep the audience who have seen these movies really wanting to see more and wanting to learn more about the creators. We're here celebrating the movies. We're celebrating the moviemakers both in front of and behind the camera."Video below: A look at the five longest Oscars speeches in historyThe show's runtime is always an issue, with the goal being to stick to three hours. ("Three hours, yeah right," Kimmel joked in his "Top Gun: Maverick" inspired promo for the show.) This year all the categories are being announced live on the show, which will also include performances of four of the best original song nominees. But they're not sweating the runtime."All we really care about is that people have a great time," Kirshner said. "There are things we can't control. And if a speech is great, we're not going to cut you off."And their plan should, say, an envelope gets mixed up, a streaker runs across the stage or a best actor nominee slaps a presenter? Well, frankly, that's someone else's job."When we do the inauguration, we don't tell the Secret Service how to protect the president," Weiss said. "We just make a show that entertains and keeps going. That's our job here. We're going to make sure it's entertaining and keep it going."Academy President Bill Kramer has said there is a crisis team and security in place ready for any number of scenarios.Video below: After last year's infamous on-stage slap, the Academy has created a "crisis team" As for the host, Molly McNearney, who is the show's executive producer and is married to Kimmel, said he thrives on unexpected moments."When the 'La La Land"https://www.wlwt.com/"Moonlight' thing happened I've never seen him so excited in my entire life," McNearney said. "He loves moments like that. He loves to be in the moment."And the slap is fair game for Kimmel, too. "We're going to acknowledge it and we're going to move on. I think that's what everyone wants. We don't want to make this year about last year," McNearney said. "It's something we can and will address in a comedic fashion."

The producers of the 95th Academy Awards have promised a show that will pull audiences in and keep them entertained for the duration. Actor Will Smith's slap of host Chris Rock dominated headlines after last year's show and a crisis team is in place for any unexpected twists, but the showrunners want to move forward with new material at this year's ceremony. Here are the moments everyone is talking about from the 2023 Oscars. (All updates in ET).10:25 p.m. On her way on stage to present the Oscar for Visual Effects, actress and director Elizabeth Banks nearly tripped on her gown, but caught herself before arriving to the microphone. When she finally announced the nominees, someone in a bear suit stood next to her, a reference to "Cocaine Bear," a film she directed that recently hit theaters. The bear made hand signals that Banks translated for the audience.“Avatar: The Way of Water” won the 2023 Oscar for Visual Effects.10:10 p.m.“All Quiet on the Western Front,” scored by Volker Bertelmann, won the 2023 Oscar for Best Original Score. The film also won the Oscar for Best Production Design. How does voting for the Oscars work? This is how winners are decidedOscars producers promise they're 'not trying to be rude' by playing off winners during speechesWhy Tom Cruise is skipping the 2023 Oscars despite all those 'Top Gun: Maverick' nominations10 p.m.Lady Gaga changed out of her elegant black Versace runway gown and opted for black ripped jeans and a black T-shirt for her performance of the Oscar-nominated song "Hold My Hand" from "Top Gun: Maverick."The singer and actress showed up on the red carpet following reports that she would be unable to attend due to her filming schedule for the "Joker" sequel.9:35 p.m. Jenny, who played the donkey in “The Banshees of Inisherin,” graced the Oscars stage wearing a bedazzled emotional support animal vest.“Not only is Jenny an actor, she’s a certified emotional support donkey,” host Jimmy Kimmel said. “At least that’s what we told the airline to get her on the plane from Ireland.”As Kimmel pointed out her co-stars seated in the audience, Colin Farrell blew her a kiss.Farrell thanked Jenny when he won a Golden Globe earlier this year.9:30 p.m. “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” won the 2023 Oscar for Best Costume Design.9:15 p.m.“The Whale” won the 2023 Oscar for Best Makeup and Hairstyling.9:55 p.m.“The Elephant Whisperers” won the 2023 Oscar for Best Documentary Short Film. Shortly after, “The Boy, the Mole, the Fox, and the Horse” won the 2023 Oscar for Best Animated Short Film.9:50 p.m. Bollywood superstar Deepika Padukone — who got her start in South Indian cinema with a Kannada-language film — introduced the performance of best original song nominee “Naatu Naatu,” from the Telegu-language “RRR.”The high-energy performance, featuring playback singers Kaala Bhairava and Rahul Sipligunj and a squadron of dancers, was still relatively tame — there was no dancing in the aisles like there's been at screenings in Hollywood.9:40 p.m. “All Quiet on the Western Front” won the 2023 Oscar for Best International Feature Film. Earlier in the ceremony, James Friend, who shot the movie, won the 2023 Oscar for Best Cinematography. 9:20 p.m.Jenny, who played the donkey in “The Banshees of Inisherin,” graced the Oscars stage wearing a bedazzled emotional support animal vest.“Not only is Jenny an actor, she’s a certified emotional support donkey,” host Jimmy Kimmel said. “At least that’s what we told the airline to get her on the plane from Ireland.”As Kimmel pointed out her co-stars seated in the audience, Colin Farrell blew her a kiss.Farrell thanked Jenny when he won a Golden Globe earlier this year.8:55 p.m. Melissa McCarthy and Halle Bailey took the Oscars stage to introduce a brand new trailer for Disney's newest live-action version of "The Little Mermaid."In the trailer, audiences get a fuller glimpse of McCarthy as Ursula and Bailey as Ariel, along with Jonah Hauer-King as Prince Eric and Javier Bardem as King Triton."The Little Mermaid," which is directed by Rob Marshall, will hit theaters on May 26. 8:50 p.m. “Navalny” won the 2023 Oscar for Best Documentary Feature Film."My husband is in prison just for telling the truth. My husband is in prison just for defending democracy," Yulia Navalnaya said. “Alexei, I am dreaming of the day when you will be free and our country will be free. Stay strong, my love.”The documentary “Navalny ” follows the Russian opposition leader and his poisoning. Navalny is now in solitary confinement in prison in Russia.8:45 p.m. Here’s an Oscar song that wasn’t planned: “Happy birthday” was performed, on stage and by many in the audience, for “An Irish Goodbye” star James Martin after its win for Best Live Action Short Film. The actor turned 31 on Sunday.Martin has Down syndrome, and his story — from Starbucks barista to the Oscar stage — has captured the imagination of many in recent weeks.8:35 p.m. Jamie Lee Curtis won the 2023 Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in “Everything Everywhere All at Once.”“My mother and father were both nominated for Oscars in different categories — I just won an Oscar," Jamie Lee Curtis said, crying. Her parents were actors Tony Curtis and Janet Leigh.8:30 p.m. Ke Huy Quan won the 2023 Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in “Everything Everywhere All at Once.”Ke Huy Quan tends to get emotional any time he contemplates his sudden reversal of fate. Ever since “Everything Everywhere All at Once” opened in theaters earlier this year, 51-year-old Quan — who a lifetime ago was the iconic child star of “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom,” as Short Round and Data in “Goonies” — has been, he says, “overwhelmed by emotions every day.”After being one of the most recognizable faces of the 80s, Quan, disheartened by a lack of roles and opportunities, decided to quit in his 20s. At 49, he gave it one last shot and two weeks later booked “Everything Everywhere All at Once.”“For the longest time, all I wanted was just a job,” Quan said. “Just an opportunity to act, to show people what I can do. This movie, ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once,’ has given me so much beyond anything I could have ever asked for.”“There are so many people out there who doubt themselves, who have dreams they’ve given up or didn’t think would ever come true,” Quan added. “To those people, I hope my story inspires them.” 8:20 p.m. “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinnochio” has won the 2023 Oscar for Best Animated Feature.8:15 p.m. Jimmy Kimmel opened the 95th Academy Awards with lighthearted jokes directed at several nominees after pretending to parachute onto the stage. In an opening skit, Kimmel seemingly sits behind Tom Cruise in a "Top Gun" fighter jet, pulls off a helmet with the call sign "Meatball" and then appeared on stage shortly after being advised to eject from the plane.Kimmel told jokes about "Top Gun: Maverick," Steven Spielberg and addressed the 2022 incident where Will Smith slapped Oscars host Chris Rock. 8 p.m. Lady Gaga isn’t kidding around — she’s not only added a last-minute performance at the Oscars, but also walked its carpet. The “Hold My Hand” singer wasn’t expected at the show but was confirmed as a performer Sunday. She was among the late arrivals on the Oscars’ champagne-colored carpet.Producers had initially cited her schedule on the “Joker” sequel as the reason she couldn’t perform. The superstar could win her second Academy Award if the “Top Gun: Maverick” track wins best original song Sunday. The Associated Press contributed to this story.

Ever since “Everything Everywhere All at Once” opened in theaters earlier this year, 51-year-old Quan — who a lifetime ago was the iconic child star of “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom,” as Short Round and Data in “Goonies” — has been, he says, “overwhelmed by emotions every day.”</p>
<p>After being one of the most recognizable faces of the 80s, Quan, disheartened by a lack of roles and opportunities, decided to quit in his 20s. At 49, he gave it one last shot and two weeks later booked “Everything Everywhere All at Once.”</p>
<p>“For the longest time, all I wanted was just a job,” Quan said. “Just an opportunity to act, to show people what I can do. This movie, ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once,’ has given me so much beyond anything I could have ever asked for.”</p>
<p>“There are so many people out there who doubt themselves, who have dreams they’ve given up or didn’t think would ever come true,” Quan added. “To those people, I hope my story inspires them.” </p>
<p><strong><em>8:20 p.m. </em></strong></p>
<p>“Guillermo del Toro’s Pinnochio” has won the 2023 Oscar for Best Animated Feature.</p>
<p><strong><em>8:15 p.m. </em></strong></p>
<p>Jimmy Kimmel opened the 95th Academy Awards with lighthearted jokes directed at several nominees after pretending to parachute onto the stage.</p>
<p>In an opening skit, Kimmel seemingly sits behind Tom Cruise in a "Top Gun" fighter jet, pulls off a helmet with the call sign "Meatball" and then appeared on stage shortly after being advised to eject from the plane.</p>
<p>Kimmel told jokes about "Top Gun: Maverick," Steven Spielberg and addressed the 2022 incident where Will Smith slapped Oscars host Chris Rock. <strong><em><br /></em></strong></p>
<p><strong><em>8 p.m. </em></strong></p>
<p>Lady Gaga isn’t kidding around — she’s not only added a last-minute performance at the Oscars, but also walked its carpet.</p>
<p>The “Hold My Hand” singer wasn’t expected at the show but was confirmed as a performer Sunday. She was among the late arrivals on the Oscars’ champagne-colored carpet.</p>
<p>Producers had initially cited her schedule on the “Joker” sequel as the reason she couldn’t perform.</p>
<p>The superstar could win her second Academy Award if the “Top Gun: Maverick” track wins best original song Sunday. </p>

<p>The 2022 Academy Awards will reportedly have a host.</p>
<p>According to <a class="Link" href="https://variety.com/2022/awards/news/oscars-host-2022-1235151298/">Variety</a> and <a class="Link" href="https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-news/oscars-2022-host-1235073116/">The Hollywood Reporter</a>, Craig Erwich, president of Hulu Originals &amp; ABC Entertainment, announced Tuesday during the winter Television Critics Association virtual press tour.</p>
<p>The 94th Oscars, which haven't had a host in three years, is slated to air on ABC on March 27.</p>
<p>The entertainment news outlets reported that Erwich did not reveal who would host this year's event.</p>
<p>The last person to host the Academy Awards was late-night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel in 2018.</p>
<p>The Oscars first went without a host in 2019, when it was first announced that comedian Kevin Hart would host, but he later dropped out after years-old homophobic tweets resurfaced, the media outlets reported.</p>
<p>In 2020, the Academy and ABC decided to forego a host after they saw viewership of the 2019 show increase. </p>
<p>In 2021, the media outlets reported that ratings dipped severely, with the COVID-delayed award show losing half of its audience.</p>

Chloe Zhao’s “Nomadland,” a wistful portrait of itinerant lives on open roads across the American West, won best picture Sunday at the 93rd Academy Awards, where the China-born Zhao also became just the second woman to win best director, and the first woman of color. The “Nomadland” victory, while widely expected, nevertheless capped the extraordinary rise of Zhao, a lyrical filmmaker whose winning film is just her third, and which — with a budget less than $5 million and featuring a cast populated by non-professional actors — ranks as one of the most modest-sized movies to win Hollywood’s top honor. Zhao’s next film, Marvel’s “Eternals,” has a budget approximately 40 times that of “Nomadland.” The only other woman to win best director has been Kathryn Bigelow, 11 years ago for “The Hurt Locker.”But “Nomadland,” as a plain-spoken meditation on solitude, grief and grit, stuck a chord in a pandemic-ravaged year. It made for an unlikely Oscar champ: A film about people who gravitate to the margins took center stage. “I have always found goodness in the people I’ve met everywhere I went in the world,” said Zhao when accepting best director. “This is for anyone who has the faith and the courage to hold on to the goodness in themselves and to hold on the goodness in other no matter how difficult it is to do that.” With a howl, “Nomadland” star Frances McDormand implored people to seek out her film and others on the big screen. Released by the Disney-owned Searchlight Pictures, “Nomadland” premiered at a drive in and debuted in theaters, but found its largest audience on Hulu. “Please watch our movie on the largest screen possible and one day very, very soon, take everyone you know into a theater, shoulder to shoulder in that dark space, and watch every film that’s represented here tonight,” McDormand said. Soon after, McDormand won best actress, too. The win puts McDormand (previously a winner for “Fargo” and “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”) in rare company as a three-time acting winner. Only Katherine Hepburn (a four-time winner) has won best actress more times. In the night’s biggest surprise, best actor went to Anthony Hopkins for the dementia drama “The Father.” The award had been widely expected to go to Chadwick Boseman for his final performance in “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.” Hopkins was not in attendance. The most ambitious award show held during the pandemic, the Oscars rolled out a red carpet and restored some glamour to the nearly century-old movie institution, but with a much transformed — and in some ways downsized — telecast. It was a year when, to paraphrase Norma Desmond, the pictures got smaller were overwhelmingly seen in the home, not in the big screen, during a pandemic year that forced theaters close and prompted radical change in Hollywood. It was also perhaps the diverse Academy Awards ever, with more women and more actors of color nominated than ever before — and Sunday brought a litany of records and firsts across many categories, spanning everything from hairstyling to composing to acting. It was, some observers said, a sea change for an awards harshly criticized as “OscarsSoWhite” in recent years, leading the film academy to greatly expand membership. The ceremony — fashioned as a movie of its own and styled as a laidback party — kicked off with opening credits and a slinky Regina King entrance, as the camera followed the actress and “One Night in Miami” director in one take as she strode with an Oscar in hand into Los Angeles’ Union Station and onto the stage. Inside the transit hub (trains kept running), nominees sat at cozy, lamp-lit tables around an intimate amphitheater. Some moments were more relaxed, but the ceremony couldn't just shake off the past 14 months. “It has been quite a year and we are still smack dab in the middle of it,” King said. Actor and comedian Lil Rel Howery led attendees of the 93rd Academy Awards in a game of "name that song" Sunday night, seemingly to liven the mood on a cermony that could escape acknowledgment he pain of the last year. One of the people roped into playing along was actress Glenn Close who correctly named the song "Da Butt" by Experience Unlimited."Spike Lee had it written for his brilliant movie 'School Daze' and my friends at the Oscars missed it and it wasn't nominated," Close told Howery as she got up and did "Da Butt" dance to a round of applause. "She did 'Da Butt' at the Oscars. This is the blackest Oscars of all time," Howery said.Daniel Kaluuya won best supporting actor for “Judas and the Black Messiah.” The win for the 32-year-old British actor who was previously nominated for “Get Out,” was widely expected. Kaluuya won for his fiery performance as the Black Panther leader Fred Hampton, whom Kaluuya thanked for showing him “how to love myself.”“You’ve got to celebrate life, man. We’re breathing. We’re walking. It’s incredible. My mum met my dad, they had sex. It’s amazing. I’m here. I’m so happy to be alive," said Kaluuya while cameras caught his mother's confused reaction. With the awards capping a year of national reckoning on race and coming days after Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin was convicted for killing George Floyd, police brutality was on the minds of many attendees. King said that if the verdict had been different, she might have traded her heels for marching boots. Travon Free, co-director of the live-action short winner “Two Perfect Strangers,” wore a suit jacket lined with the names of those killed by police. His film dramatizes police brutality as an inescapable time loop like a tragic “Groundhog’s Day" for Black Americans.“Today, the police will kill three people. And tomorrow, the police will kill three people. And the day after that, the police will kill three people because on average, the police in America everyday kill three people, which amounts to about a thousand people a year," said Free. "Those people happen to disproportionately be Black people.”Best supporting actress went to Yuh-Jung Youn for the matriarch of Lee Isaac Chung’s tender Korean-American family drama “Minari.” The 72-year-old Youn, a well-known actress in her native South Korea, is the first Asian actress to win an Oscar since 1957 and the second in history. She accepted the award from Brad Pitt, an executive producer on “Minari.” “Mr. Brad Pitt, finally," said Youn. “Nice to meet you.”Hairstylists Mia Neal and Jamika Wilson of “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” became the first Black women to win in makeup and hairstyling. Ann Roth, at 89 one of the oldest Oscar winners ever, also won for the film’s costume design. The night’s first award went to Emerald Fennell, the writer-director of the provocative revenge thriller “Promising Young Woman,” for best screenplay. Fennell, winning for her feature debut, is the first woman win solo in the category since Diablo Cody (“Juno”) in 2007. The broadcast instantly looked different. It’s being shot in 24 frames-per-second and in more widescreen format. In a more intimate show without an audience beyond nominees, winners were given wider latitude in their speeches. The telecast, produced by a team led by filmmaker Steven Soderbergh, moved out of the awards' usual home, the Dolby Theatre, for Union Station. With Zoom ruled out for nominees, the telecast included satellite feeds from around the world. Performances of the song nominees were pre-taped and aired during the preshow. “Husavik (My Hometown)” from “Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga.,” was preformed from the Iceland town’s harbor. Others were sung from atop of the academy’s new $500 million film museum. Pixar notched its 11th best animated feature Oscar with “Soul,” the studio’s first feature with a Black protagonist. Peter Docter’s film, about a about middle-school music teacher (Jamie Foxx), was one of the few big-budget movies in the running at the Academy Awards. (It also won best score, making Jon Batiste the second Black composer win the award, which he shared with Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross.) Another was Christopher Nolan's “Tenet,” which last September attempted to resuscitate moviegoing during the pandemic, took best visual effects.David Fincher's “Mank," a lavishly crafted drama of 1940s Hollywood made for Netflix, came in the lead nominee with 10 nods and went home with award for cinematography and for production design. Best adapted screenplay went to the dementia drama “The Father.” “My Octopus Teacher,” a film that found a passionate following on Netflix, won best documentary. Danish director Thomas Vinterberg’s “Another Round” won best international film, an award he dedicated to his daughter, Ida, who in 2019 was killed in a car crash at age 19. The red carpet was back Sunday, minus the throngs of onlookers and with socially distanced interviews. Only a handful of media outlets were allowed on site, behind a velvet rope and some distance from the nominees. Casual wear, the academy warned nominees early on, was a no-no. Stars, limited to a plus-one, went without their usual battalions of publicists. But even good show may not be enough to save the Oscars from an expected ratings slide. Award show ratings have cratered during the pandemic, and this year's nominees — many of them smaller, lower-budget dramas — won't come close to the drawing power of past Oscar heavyweights like “Titanic” or “Black Panther.” Last year's Oscars, when Bong Joon Ho's “Parasite” became the first non-English language film to win best picture, was watched by 23.6 million, an all-time low.Sunday's pandemic-delayed Oscars bring to a close the longest awards season ever — one that turned the season's industrial complex of cocktail parties and screenings virtual. Eligibility was extended into February of this year, and for the first time, a theatrical run wasn't a requirement of nominees. Some films — like “Sound of Metal” — premiered all the way back in September 2019. The biggest ticket-seller of the best picture nominees is “Promising Young Woman,” with $6.4 million in box office

<p>One of the people roped into playing along was actress Glenn Close who correctly named the song "Da Butt" by Experience Unlimited.</p>
<p>"Spike Lee had it written for his brilliant movie 'School Daze' and my friends at the Oscars missed it and it wasn't nominated," Close told Howery as she got up and did "Da Butt" dance to a round of applause.</p>
<p> "She did 'Da Butt' at the Oscars. This is the blackest Oscars of all time," Howery said.</p>
<p>Daniel Kaluuya won best supporting actor for <a href="https://apnews.com/article/judas-and-the-black-messiah-movie-review-73cf9b26b8ed4cef330c049dd474c2da" rel="nofollow"> “Judas and the Black Messiah.” </a> The win for the 32-year-old British actor who was previously nominated for “Get Out,” was widely expected. Kaluuya won for his fiery performance as the Black Panther leader Fred Hampton, whom Kaluuya thanked for showing him “how to love myself.”</p>
<p>“You’ve got to celebrate life, man. We’re breathing. We’re walking. It’s incredible. My mum met my dad, they had sex. It’s amazing. I’m here. I’m so happy to be alive," said Kaluuya while cameras caught his mother's confused reaction. </p>
<p>With the awards capping a year of national reckoning on race and coming days after Minneapolis police officer <a href="https://apnews.com/article/derek-chauvin-trial-live-updates-04-20-2021-955a78df9a7a51835ad63afb8ce9b5c1" rel="nofollow">Derek Chauvin was convicted for killing George Floyd</a>, police brutality was on the minds of many attendees. King said that if the verdict had been different, she might have traded her heels for marching boots. </p>
<p>Travon Free, co-director of the live-action short winner “Two Perfect Strangers,” wore a suit jacket lined with the names of those killed by police. His film dramatizes police brutality as an inescapable time loop like a tragic “Groundhog’s Day" for Black Americans.</p>
<p>“Today, the police will kill three people. And tomorrow, the police will kill three people. And the day after that, the police will kill three people because on average, the police in America everyday kill three people, which amounts to about a thousand people a year," said Free. "Those people happen to disproportionately be Black people.”</p>
<p><a href="https://apnews.com/article/youn-yuh-jung-minari-oscars-2021-dd4b2ce5d43ecdba86e1331f39c1780d" rel="nofollow">Best supporting actress went to Yuh-Jung Youn </a> for the matriarch of Lee Isaac Chung’s tender Korean-American family drama “Minari.” The 72-year-old Youn, a well-known actress in her native South Korea, is the first Asian actress to win an Oscar since 1957 and the second in history. She accepted the award from Brad Pitt, an executive producer on “Minari.” “Mr. Brad Pitt, finally," said Youn. “Nice to meet you.”</p>

<p>Hairstylists Mia Neal and Jamika Wilson of “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” became the first Black women to win in makeup and hairstyling. Ann Roth, at 89 one of the oldest Oscar winners ever, also won for the film’s costume design. </p>
<p>The night’s first award went to Emerald Fennell, the writer-director <a href="https://apnews.com/article/carey-mulligan-emerald-fennell-promising-young-woman-oscars-d5548a43d5c880c0cc38cdb9544d4aff" rel="nofollow">of the provocative revenge thriller “Promising Young Woman,”</a> for best screenplay. Fennell, winning for her feature debut, is the first woman win solo in the category since Diablo Cody (“Juno”) in 2007. </p>
<p>The broadcast instantly looked different. It’s being shot in 24 frames-per-second and in more widescreen format. In a more intimate show without an audience beyond nominees, winners were given wider latitude in their speeches. </p>
<p>The telecast, produced by a team led by filmmaker Steven Soderbergh, moved out of the awards' usual home, the Dolby Theatre, for Union Station. </p>
<p>Pixar notched its 11th best animated feature Oscar with “Soul,” the studio’s first feature with a Black protagonist. Peter Docter’s film, about a about middle-school music teacher (Jamie Foxx), was one of the few big-budget movies in the running at the Academy Awards. (It also won best score, making Jon Batiste the second Black composer win the award, which he shared with Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross.) Another was Christopher Nolan's “Tenet,” which last September attempted to resuscitate moviegoing during the pandemic, took best visual effects.</p>

<p>David Fincher's “Mank," a lavishly crafted drama of 1940s Hollywood made for Netflix, came in the lead nominee with 10 nods and went home with award for cinematography and for production design. </p>

Danish director Thomas Vinterberg’s “Another Round” won best international film, an award he dedicated to his daughter, Ida, who in 2019 was killed in a car crash at age 19. </p>
<p>The red carpet was back Sunday, minus the throngs of onlookers and with socially distanced interviews. Only a handful of media outlets were allowed on site, behind a velvet rope and some distance from the nominees. Casual wear, the academy warned nominees early on, was a no-no. Stars, limited to a plus-one, went without their usual battalions of publicists. </p>
<p>But even good show may not be enough to save the Oscars from an expected ratings slide. Award show ratings <a href="https://apnews.com/article/entertainment-music-television-coronavirus-pandemic-grammy-awards-e2dcb1700145bafcbb33407b65a3ecea" rel="nofollow">have cratered during the pandemic</a>, and this year's nominees — many of them smaller, lower-budget dramas — won't come close to the drawing power of past Oscar heavyweights like “Titanic” or “Black Panther.” Last year's Oscars, when <a href="https://apnews.com/article/75ca3451d6974bfa1228025fa4790be2" rel="nofollow">Bong Joon Ho's “Parasite” became the first non-English language film to win best picture,</a> was watched by 23.6 million, an all-time low.</p>
<p>Sunday's pandemic-delayed Oscars bring to a close the longest awards season ever — one that turned the <a href="https://apnews.com/article/academy-awards-coronavirus-pandemic-movies-32ce4982dd0aad514291e70d9b6ed4a0" rel="nofollow">season's industrial complex of cocktail parties and screenings virtual</a>. Eligibility was extended into February of this year, and for the first time, a theatrical run wasn't a requirement of nominees. Some films — like “Sound of Metal” — premiered all the way back in September 2019. The biggest ticket-seller of the best picture nominees is “Promising Young Woman,” with $6.4 million in box office</p>

<p>An Oscars unlike any before will get underway Sunday night, with history on the line in major categories and a telecast retooled for the pandemic. </p>
<p>The 93rd Academy Awards will begin at 8 p.m. ET on ABC. </p>
<p>There will be no host, no audience, nor face masks for nominees attending the ceremony at Los Angeles’ Union Station. </p>
<p>In contrast with the Golden Globes, Zoom boxes have been closed out — though numerous international hubs and satellite feeds will connect nominees unable to travel to the awards. </p>
<p>Show producers are hoping to return some of the traditional glamour to the Oscars, even in a pandemic year.</p>
<p>In March, producers Jesse Collins, Stacy Sher, and Steven Soderbergh said in a statement that their plan is for the Oscars to "look like a movie, not a television show."</p>
<p>"Glenn has embraced this approach and come up with ideas of his own on how to achieve this," the statement read. "We’re thrilled to have him as part of the brain trust."</p>
<p>They've enlisted Emmy and Tony Award-winning director Glenn Weiss to direct the live broadcast on April 25.</p>
<p><b>THE NOMINEES</b></p>
<p>Netflix's "Mank" — the story of screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz's quest to finish writing "Citizen Kane" — leads the way with 10 nominations. Among its accolades are nominations for Best Motion Picture, Best Leading Actor (Gary Oldman), Best Supporting Actress (Amanda Seyfried) and Best Director (David Fincher).</p>
<p>This year, the award categories are also making history. </p>
<p>Two women were nominated in the Best Director category for the first time in the show's history. Chloé Zhao was nominated for her work on "Nomadland," and Emerald Fennell was nominated for directing "Promising Young Woman." Only five women have ever been nominated for the award in its entire history, reported the AP. Zhao would be just the second woman to win best director in the academy's 93 years (following Kathryn Bigelow for "The Hurt Locker"), and the first woman of color.</p>
<p>History can also be made if winners in the acting categories go to actors and actresses of colors, as they did in the Screen Actors Guild Awards. Those who won included Chadwick Boseman for best actor and Viola Davis for best actress in "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom's." Yuh-Jung Youn took the award for best supporting actress for her role in the film "Minari," and Daniel Kaluuya won for best supporting actor in "Judas and the Black Messiah". If all four winners also win an Oscar, it would the first time nonwhite actors swept the acting categories.</p>
<p>Boseman would be the third actor to win a posthumous award if he took the Oscar, following Peter Finch and Heath Ledger.</p>
<p>For the first time, Hollywood's most prestigious awards will overwhelmingly go to movies that never made it to theaters, largely due to shutdowns amid the pandemic. The biggest ticket-seller of the best picture nominees is "Promising Young Woman," with $6.3 million in the box office.</p>
