An overnight fire quickly engulfed a mobile home in Kings Mobile Home Park in Des Moines, Iowa. The flames started just before 2:30 a.m. Wednesday. One mobile home was destroyed, but everyone was able to make it out alive because of a hero. That hero is 9-year-old Juan Gomez. "I felt like the house was immediately going to go down," Juan said. Juan woke up in the middle of the night and noticed an odd smell in the house. "I just thought it was popcorn, but it was so strong so I checked," Juan said. As he checked on the odd smell, flames started to burn, so he ran to his mom's room to wake her up."I had my door closed. He barged into my room and said mom there's fire," said Ana Dominguez, Juan Gomez's mother.By the time Juan alerted his mom, the flames were growing. The family scrambled to get out safely, but flames were already blocking the front door and parts of the ceiling started to fall.That's when the 9-year-old boy took it on himself to comfort his little sisters."She was scared and she started crying. I told Cecilia it will be OK," Juan said. They were OK. All five of them and their two dogs made it out alive because Juan acted quickly. "Had I stayed there I think five more seconds, I think we would've, yeah, fried basically," Dominguez said.It pains Dominguez to think of what could have happened if it wasn't for her brave son, but this proud mom is thankful for her son and what he did."I thank God for that kid at that moment. I cannot thank him enough because we were dead asleep," Dominguez said. "He is the reason we're probably alive."Juan said he realizes his quick actions saved his family and he's thankful they will have more time together. "I don't know how to say it," Gomez said. "I'm just really happy that I saved them and I can still make memories with my family."

Whether singing to a crowd or jammin' at home, 9-year-old JJ Day was an entertainer."Whenever we had our friends over, he would always play along with us. He would always be making poses for the camera. He would always make us laugh," his sister, Morgan Day said. JJ's older sister, Madison said, "Potty humor, that was his favorite. He made jokes constantly ... He told me a few of his new year's resolutions, and one was to have more friends."The Mason third-grader, who wanted to be Mickey Mouse at Disney World one day, knew how to dominate a room. "His personality, it was explosive. It was so big," said his mother, Kristen Day. "He was our source of huge laughter." JJ's presence was always filled with love."He made sure that each of us knew that he loved us, and we loved him," Kristen Day said. JJ Day unexpectedly last Saturday. While his family still doesn't have answers about how he died, their focus is on how he lived. The term "Love like JJ" has spread through the community and on social media."I mean, he's everywhere," said his father, Jon Day. "He would want to be everywhere. He would want to be in everyone's face." Stories of JJ can fill a room with laughter, but words can't describe the pain in his family's hearts.The Days said they've found strength in their community and every person who has reached out to say they will try and love like JJ."We hear you. We see you and we feel you," Jon Day said."We feel the prayers. We feel the support. We absolutely feel it. It happened in a flash. A 10-year-old boy is in critical condition after he ran out into the path of an oncoming car and was struck in Westwood Tuesday afternoon.It happened around 2:30 p.m. in the 3200 block of Montana Avenue outside of a crosswalk.He ran right into the path of a white Chrysler 200."The car saw him at the last minute and tried to stop real fast," the woman said.She said she called 911 as the boy's brother carried him out of the street. Investigators said the boy was taken to Cincinnati Children's Hospital with life-threatening injuries. He is currently listed in critical but stable condition. Neighbors are hoping for the best.Some were nearby as the boy ran into the path of a car outside of a crosswalk. They said there was nothing they could do."I was crying, screaming Jesus name. His mom was crying," a woman who did not want to be identified said.That woman did not want to share her name or show her face in an interview, but the pain of the situation could be heard in her voice as she recounted a horrific crash steps from her porch."Quick as you can blink your eye, it happened fast. I had close my eyes because I knew he wasn't making it across that street, you know, I saw it and I just did like this and I heard it, 'boom' and then I opened my eyes and he was laying on the ground," she said. The driver was visibly upset and police said he cooperated completely. Cincinnati police said he was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash and wasn't injured.Excessive speed and impairment do not appear to be factors in the crash. Neighbors said the area is packed with cars and kids."It's a rarity that kids run out in the street, but it's always busy. It's constantly with kids," neighbor Holly Kenerly said.They said this scene is a reminder of the danger anytime anyone steps off of one of these curbs."Just be mindful. Be mindful of your surroundings. Kids, adults, drivers," Kenerly said.We were unable to talk with any of the boy's family about how he is doing.
