A 500-pound black bear wreaking havoc in the Tahoe Keys community in California was spotted Friday morning and broke into another home, South Lake Tahoe police said. The bear now has an unofficial name: "Hank the Tank." Named appropriately by the South Lake Tahoe Police Department, Hank added another crime to his rap sheet. The bear broke into a secured home last week in the Tahoe Keys neighborhood, South Lake Tahoe Police said. Officers banged on the exterior of the home until Hank escaped out the back door. Officers remained in the area to ensure the bear ran off at a safe distance from the home without damaging any other properties nearby, police said. South Lake Tahoe police said Hank did not break into a garage where trash was kept, but rather he broke into a secured home through a small window. When needed, officers are trained to use deterrents such as loud sirens, dry-firing their tasers and beanbag rounds, police said. This latest break-in comes as California Department of Wildlife officials, along with South Lake Tahoe police have been dealing with Hank for quite some time. Just in the past two months, Hank has racked up over 150 service calls for break-ins and other issues related to reported sightings, officials said. Officials say euthanasia is a last resort taken by the Department of Fish and Wildlife, however Hank's past behavior and dependence on human food make relocating the bear very difficult. As of Friday, no viable relocation site for this bear has been found. While unlikely, the Department of Fish and Wildlife are exploring other options.

COVINGTON, Ky. — The City of Covington is giving some business owners a helping hand during the holidays. Almost $500,000 in grants are being given out to 13 different businesses in order to offset losses due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Trying to make it through the next 12 weeks is going to be rough, because we were trying to figure out how we’re going to get funding,” The Delish Dish Catering & Events owner and executive chef Mavis Linnemann-Clark said. “Do I have to take out a personal loan?”

She said these are the questions she wrestles with every day – and at least now, she has some answers.

"The city of Covington has been a cheerleader for us and they've helped us out in other aspects of my business, and this is no exception," Linneman-Clark said.

Covington and Kenton County put money together to give the Delish Dish a $50,000 grand. They’re also giving grants of differing amounts to 12 other local businesses – all in an effort to keep them afloat and keep jobs in the city.

“This will help us keep our doors open and our kitchen cooking," Linneman-Clark said. "It's just the best, absolutely the best, Christmas present that I could ask for."

She said the grant is even more important since her catering company doesn’t qualify for certain relief funds that are only available to restaurants and bars.

"There is hope for small businesses; you just have to look for it under every nook and cranny," Linneman-Clark said.

She said 2020 has not been easy for The Delish Dish or many other businesses across the Tri-State – but the catering company said the grant gives it a new reason to look forward to 2021.

"We're already negative for the year, so it will help us not lose as much money in the first part of the year,” Linneman-Clark said. “And, hopefully next year we can make it out and recover what we've lost this year, which is a lot."

Covington and Kenton County businesses that get grant money will have to work with the Kentucky Small Business Development Center to make sure they are prepared and ready for whatever they might need to do to get through the rest of the pandemic.

More than half a million people in the U.S. have now died of COVID-19, a stark reminder of the toll the pandemic has taken on the country as the rate of the virus slows.

The U.S. crossed the threshold Monday, nearly a year after the first wave of COVID-19 led to widespread lockdowns and stay-at-home orders. As of Monday at least 28 million Americans are confirmed to have contracted the virus — a number that is likely much higher.

The U.S. leads the world in deaths caused by the virus. The country represents about 4% of the world’s population but accounts for about 20% of the world’s 2.5 million COVID-19 deaths.

Brazil, with 246,000 deaths is the only other country in the world that has recorded at least 200,000 deaths.

The U.S. also leads the world in total recorded COVID-19 cases with nearly 30 million. India and Brazil are the only other countries with at least 10 million total cases.

President Joe Biden is expected to hold a remembrance ceremony at the White House to honor those killed by the virus on Monday evening.

Despite the pain and suffering linked to half a million deaths, health experts are hopeful that the U.S. is already through the darkest days of the pandemic. There are two COVID-19 vaccines approved for emergency use — both of which have been proven to be safe and highly effective.

&lt;a href="https:&amp;#47;&amp;#47;covidtracking.com&amp;#47;"&gt;&lt;img alt=" " src="https:&amp;#47;&amp;#47;public.tableau.com&amp;#47;static&amp;#47;images&amp;#47;TM&amp;#47;TM2XQ98MH&amp;#47;1_rss.png" style="border: none" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;

There are also several other vaccine candidates that could be approved in the weeks ahead. And while the spread of the virus and rates of severe infections of the disease remain elevated, they’ve plummeted in recent weeks.

Since peaking at nearly a quarter of a million new cases each day in early January, case rates have declined to an average of about 66,000 a day. Average deaths have also decreased from about 3,300 a day to about 1,900 a day.

most people dream of winning the lottery, the new cars, the vacations, the homes. However, all of these shiny objects are things you should avoid. Here are five things you shouldn't do If you win the lottery. Take it from financial experts USA Today, CNN and 24 7 Wall Street spoke with I don't think you can win big and then up and leave your spouse without telling them. A woman tried this in 1996 after winning 1.3 million from the California Lottery, she was forced to hand over her fortune during divorce proceedings to her ex hubby. Don't jump for joy right away if the numbers match in 2013 a Pasadena, California, woman found out she held a winning ticket for a cool $360 million. Problem is, it wasn't a winning ticket because she bought it on our after the Powerball cutoff time. Don't be so generous with your new money. Word will spread fast and people in your life will be looking for a handout. The news will also attract people you don't even know hitting you up for investments, gifts and loans which won't be paid back. Some financial planners even recommend changing your phone number. The dream of winning can turn into a nightmare. If you brag about your new cash, USA Today says winning the lottery could make you a target for theft or murder. So keep things to yourself. Just because you won the lottery doesn't mean you're suddenly smarter about money. For many winning shows, they don't know a thing about having big bucks and taxes that come with those shiny new objects. Be smart and get a financial planner. Because the certified financial planner Board of Standard says nearly 1/3 of lottery winners declare bankruptcy. That doesn't take long to go from living on Easy Street to the poor house.
