A small-town restaurant that survived COVID-19 is fighting to stay open after being hit with something that has been even more devastating – a case of fraud.“I'm angry because I've always wondered how people can let people take advantage of them and then I fell for that,” said Diane Korner.Korner is the owner of Korner Kountry Kitchen in Brookville, Indiana. She said a case of fraud cost them more than $100,000.“I’m hurt that somebody would do this to us and make us struggle,” Korner said. The restaurant was having trouble making payroll for the 25 employees and was a matter of hours from closing when things took an unusual turn. The community came together to raise about $10,000. It’s not enough to bail the restaurant out, but it has kept its doors open.“It's amazing,” said Kountry Kitchen general manager Amanda Merritt. “We've had phone calls, messages, there was a GoFundMe. They've helped with their donating.”The money came from individuals around town who don’t want the restaurant to close.“We come two to three times a week,” said James Wagner, who drives about 10 miles to get to the restaurant.Wagner said it’s not just the food, but the small-town flavor of the business that keeps him coming back. Before his wife died, he would bring her to the restaurant. He said one day he was cutting up a salad to make the pieces smaller for his wife.“So, Diane came over and said, ‘What are you doing?’” Wagner said he explained the situation. “From then on, she told the girls, anytime my wife ordered a salad, you make sure you got to cut it up real fine. She took care of my wife.”Those kinds of details are not overlooked in a small town.Korner said she is unable to talk about the details of the fraud case, but that local, state and federal authorities are looking into the crime.

A mother and veteran who served in Iraq and Afghanistan said she had to do something she never dreamed of.While stuck in traffic on Interstate 10 in New Orleans, she said someone tried to get in her car.So, her training kicked in and she pulled out a gun.Charise Taylor said the incident happened while her 2-year-old son was in the car. "You shouldn't have to navigate your own city like a war zone. It's un-American,” Taylor said. “The crime is out of control and it's terrifying. At this point, having to use the same tactics in an American city that you use in Iraq and Afghanistan simply to navigate through the city it's scary and I'm not the only mom feeling this way."Taylor said she was headed to pick up her husband on Friday. She said she was stuck in gridlock traffic when a group in a truck motioned to her to get over. So, she let them. Next thing she knows a man comes up to her passenger door."So, as he comes up he's close and he's pretty aggressive trying to get the car door open makes eye contact with me he's still trying to get it open a couple times," Taylor said.Taylor said she picked up her gun.“It’s locked and loaded," she recalled saying.Watch the video above for the full story.

<p>ORLANDO — Let's talk about salt. No, not what you put on food. </p>
<p>The S.A.L.T. debate in Washington is about state and local tax deductions and whether Americans should be able to deduct unlimited state and local taxes on their federal tax return. </p>
<p><b>WHY IT MATTERS </b></p>
<p>Former President Donald Trump's signature tax law in 2017 made a change to the amount of state and local taxes that can be deducted from a federal tax return. </p>
<p>Prior to 2017, it was an unlimited amount. </p>
<p>After 2017, it was capped at $10,000. </p>
<p><b>PEOPLE ON THE MOVE</b></p>
<p>During the last year, thousands of Americans decided to leave the state in which they were leaving and move somewhere else. No state has perhaps benefited more than Florida. </p>
<p>"It’s absolutely insane right now," Natalie Arrowsmith, a realtor in Central Florida, said about the housing market. </p>
<p>Arrowsmith says many of her clients are coming from New York and California, and citing the benefits of new work-from-home perks. </p>
<p>For instance, with the $10,000 cap on deductions in place, there is now an incentive to live in a lower-taxed state where your local taxes aren't as high. </p>
<p>Florida has no income tax. </p>
<p>"Compared to where they are in other state, that’s a huge attraction," Arrowsmith said. </p>
<p>One such person is Erin Sykes, a realtor herself in the Palm Beach area. Sykes is still keeping her business in New York, but her primary residence is now Florida. </p>
<p>"In my situation, I am definitely keeping more of my money by being a Florida resident," Sykes said. </p>
<p><b>S.A.L.T. DEBATE IN CONGRESS </b></p>
<p>The debate over whether state and local taxes should be eligible for unlimited deductions is a part of the massive infrastructure debate. </p>
<p>Rep. Tom Suozzi (D-NY) said he will vote against the President's proposal unless the tax code is changed. Suozzi believes people are leaving his state for places like Florida because of it. </p>
<p>Other Democrats who support changing the tax code include Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and Senator Chuck Schumer, who represent California and New York respectively. </p>
<p>Unlike Suozzi, Pelosi and Schumer are unlikely to hold up the infrastructure package if the measure does not make it into the final bill. </p>
<p>Changing it will be difficult, however. Many progressives have actually sided with conservatives on the issue. </p>
<p>Senator Bernie Sander (D-VT) and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) have said they are opposed to changing the tax code because it would benefit the wealthy who have high taxes to pay. </p>
<p>All of this must be factored into negotiations over infrastructure reform that continue in Washington, D.C. </p>
